Missouri coach Gary Pinkel expects a raucous atmosphere for the school's first SEC game against Georgia on Sept. 8.
Georgia fans have often asked me what awaits the Bulldogs when they visit Missouri on September 8th. Well, I’ve never been to Columbia, Mo., either. But I know the Tigers and their fans will be especially fired up for their first SEC game in history.
Here’s what Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel thinks:
“It will be mammoth here. Our fans are so excited about being a part of the SEC. That being the first game is going to make it a big, big, game here. People are talking about it already; rarely do they ever do that. They understand we’re playing a great Georgia team. We understand that. When we switched leagues, that enthusiasm really for that game and from our fanbase in general has been remarkably positive for us.”
Pinkel was taking part in his first SEC teleconference call on Tuesday. Thirteen of the 14 coaches — Arkansas’ new guy, John L. Smith, wasn’t due to be introduced until about 3 p.m. — answered reporters’ questions for about 10 minutes or so as part of this post-spring-practice tradition.
Pinkel, Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin and Ole Miss’s Hugh Freeze were the new kids on the block. Pinkel was asked about making the transition and trying to get ready for the Bulldogs.
“Anytime you make a transition like we’re making to the SEC there are a lot of things that are involved,” Pinkel said. “One is, not knowing any of the personnel or schemes we’re playing as far as our opponents. Obviously we know all the Big 12 teams very well. So we’re doing a lot of analysis right now, not just of Georgia, but of all the teams we’re going to play next year. That’s been going on since the end of February and it will go on into August. That’s kind of part of our transition. We have to do a lot of homework and a lot of study and evaluation of the schemes of all these teams and certainly personnel. . . . It’s very important for us to do a thorough analysis so that when we play these teams we have a pretty good understanding of what their makeup is.”
Georgia and Florida both have the unenviable task of christening the new teams into SEC play. The Gators also play Texas A&M on Sept. 8 in College Station.
“You knew [when SEC 2012 schedules were released] that was going to be an historic game for Missouri and for Texas A&M, for that matter,” Richt said. “It was pretty obvious the excitement for those programs is going to be at an all-time high. So it’s going to be a great challenge for us from a psychological point of view. But, in the meantime, we’ve been able to look at some film of Missouri’s offense and defense and they’re very impressive. You look at their overall record, knowing Coach Pinkel and his history of success, just seeing the players that they have and the big games they’ve won in teh past, we know it’s going to be a tremendous challenge for us. But we’ll be excited about it, too.”
A lot of the coaches were talking about how different it will be playing Missouri because they play such a radically different style of spread offense, often utilizing four and five wide receivers. Florida’s Will Muschamp and Auburn’s Gene Chizik both faced Pinkel’s offenses while defensive coordinators at Texas.
Richt doesn’t believe the scheme itself is a problem.
“Our league is pretty diverse,” he said. “There’s not any one way of doing things in the Southeastern Conference. They’ll be doing some things a lot of teams in our league do. They may spread out a little more than most people in our league do, but not anything that no one has ever seen before.”
Schemes and matchups aside, it’s the sheer electricity expected on Sept. 8th that has everybody so excited. Pinkel expects his team to be pumped up by the atmosphere — but not overwhelmed by it.
“We’ve had some remarkably big games here,” Pinkle said. “A couple of years ago we were both 7-0 when we played Oklahoma in a big night game here. We’ve had a bunch of games like that over the years, like Georgia has had and all the other teams in the country have had. What really is different here is this a new era. This is the beginning of a new era for Missouri football forever. We just happen to be playing Georgia this year in our opener for that and there is just a real enthusiasm for it. It will go down in history as the first game. So to say it’s just a normal game, just a normal conference game, it’s really not. Once you break the ice there, then there it goes and we’ll just move on.”

I’ll make a deal with you right now Mr. King. IF A Murray goes into Columbia and wets his pants(along with fumbling twice and throwing 2 INT’s-one for a Pick-6), then you MUST write an article stating that it’s time for CMR to re-assess the QB situation. IF Murray goes there and plays ‘lights out’ and we win the game going away, us doubter’s will zip our lips about him for the rest of the year…Deal???

This is very similar to Boise State last year, except we’re playing at their place, and they will be juiced! Anyone that thinks this will be a cakewalk will be in for a rude awaking. Our defense gives us a chance, assuming we have the eligible players necessary to play the game.

This game reminds me of the game we played a few years ago when we went up to Stillwater and got our butts kicked by a Okie State team looking to prove they belonged. Well, that didn’t work out real well. Only difference I see, and it’s a BIG difference, is that this Georgia team should be WAAAAYYY better than that one at almost EVERY position. But, as we all know, emotion plays a big role in the outcome of games in College Football (which is why we love it so much!). I think we will win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost.

I am going to make the trip. Should be alot of fun (if we win). I dont think this is anything like the Boise State game. Missouri is a really good team but Boise was at least a top 10 team last year. I never expected to beat Boise last year. I do expect to beat Missouri. I said before last year that our toughest 2 games on the schedule were the first 2 games. I was right until we played the extra game against LSU. I just dont see the Boise comparison.

We can be a great team, but we have to beat great teams , to be a great team. When did we become great? Georgia is a great school, but has to prove it is a great team. Look the stadium seats 71k and is real open aired. This team has been to Knoxville, Jacksonville, Tuscaloosa and Auburn. Handling a “mammoth” Mizzou crowd should be a nonfactor. If anything it will be a issue with the Mizzou players at the beginning of the game in controling there emotions.

The Ga Mizzou game won’t anything like last years BSU game. Ga won’t have a true freshman RB with almost no RB depth and there wont Be a true freshman and a RS freshman receiver in the top three rotation.
The Defense won’t be still trying to understand the scheme and there won’t be Defensive players all over the field playing in their first Ga game or at a new position for the first game.
Also, Mizzou won’t be returning 95% of their two deep starters like BSU was last year.
Looking forward to a great atmosphere and a hard fought GA victory!

Mo Tiger–Welcome to the SEC! And you will see what we’ve known for years–just ain’t nothing like it. The luckiest team in the nation is the one that plays Mizzou the week after its SEC opener. From sky high, to major letdown. I liked Coach Pinkel’s remembrance about playing OU in a night game, as being one of Mizzou’s “big” games. I’m sure it was, as it would be for us, too. Trouble is, every week in the SEC is like that. There are no breathers. No weeks off. Coach better have his boys running gassers up the stadium steps this July, ’cause a muggy night game down here in September is a cramp festival. Strap it up tight, boys, football in the SEC ain’t your father’s rodeo.

I agree that “on paper”, Georgia should win this game, even with most of our secondary watching from a distance. BUT, do not forget that we have Coach Bobo calling the plays, and his tendency is to try to sit on a lead instead of keeping our paw on the gas pedal until the game is over. So, there is a solid chance that we may build a 10-14 point lead, then hold on for dear life as their spread offense tries to catch up and beat us late. IF Coach Bobo will give us the rare 4 quarters of aggressive offense, and will expand the playbook past the first 2 pages, (the screen passes, fullback runs and the beloved toss sweeps begin on Page 3, according to rumors), we should beat Missouri without it being a nail-biter.
Their defense isn’t that good, so 4 aggressive quarters should give us at least 40 points. But, there’s no guarantee that we’ll play more than 3 quarters of offense……….. GO DAWGS!

I think the UGA defensive front seven will introduce them quite nicely to the SEC. It is going to take them a few games to catch up to the speed of the SEC defenses, as they are fast and they are good. They will have three new offensive linemen, and so will UGA, but the difference is they will also have three new defensive linemen, so that kind of negates any advantage for either team. I am not sure how fully recovered their QB will be from his shoulder surgery, so it could be a long day for them. If they can keep their emotions in check a little, they might make a game of it, but if not, they will make mistakes on offense that UGA’s defense will capitalize on.

It is pointless to predict the outcome of a college football game months before it is played but we won’t get a shortage of effort or emotion from Missouri.
It will be a great game in a great amosphere.

Tide……you are talking a lot of smack so early in the year aren’t you? The gloating about recruiting seven of our state players to ala.. Heard the primary motivator was that they would be “protected” from disciplinary action if they smoked dope at Alabama, both by the coaches and the police. Just a rumor but since there is not a history of punishing players for use, according to the NCAA, itt was amusing though. Only (8) teams nationally have disciplined their players with suspensions. ONLY EIGHT!!!!!! Course we know no Alabama player has every smoked MJ. right tide…..

Red Jello,
I wanted to touch on that embarrassment thing one time. If you pull for the “Tide”, isn’t that one big embarrassment right there? Louisiana Monroe, Utah, Mike Shula, Harvey Updike, The Tea-bagger. Congrats on your recent NC’s as the SEC is very proud of what you have accomplished. But, keep in mind you carry your own shame with you. Winning does not cover that up. Especially when you talk trash to other fan bases who you know will remind you of your “past” discretions. Kind of makes me mad now that the SEC took Bama off our schedule. Would have been nice for Richt to continue building his winning record against the “Tide”. What is CMR on ya’ll; 3-1? Now, go ahead and throw a “Saban owns you”, or a “I’m smarter than you” comment back at me. You know you want to.

Missouri fans, I apologize for the SEC. You’ll find that the UGA fanbase is easily the most ignorant of all fanbases in the conference. They are big on talk, small on results. You can’t beat them on paper; no one can. The NY Giants can’t beat them before the season starts. But anyone with a winning record can after the season starts. They are 24-15 their last three seasons. They aren’t Bama, or LSU, or Arkansas. They are Kansas in femine red uniforms. Play solid football and you’ll have no problems. And welcome.

Alabama got past their embarrassing years by making the appropriate changes. They didn’t have an idiot fan base worshiping a coordinator (who averages 40 pts to ranked teams) because the defense looked good against Kentucky.
This is one of the many reasons you had to get up and turn the channel on the TV after UGA’s last championship showing.

I grew up in Missouri and lived there or on the Kansas side of Kansas City for over forty years. I don’t think the “environment” or extra pump MU might get from joining the SEC will mean much, after all, Mizzou is accustomed to playing Oklahoma et. al. over the years. I do think this is a trap game for UGA, although they SHOULD win pulling away. You can’t just count MU as an automatic win, they have a program and could well challenge in the East.
It’s very disappointing to see Mizzou leave the Big 8/Big 12. A lot of tradition thrown on the trash heap for a quick buck, but they didn’t start the split-up and need to protect their interests. I’ll miss those MU-KU basketball games. Just imagine if there were no more UGA-Tech matchups. Big loss.
This game for me will be like watching the Braves play the Cardinals. My fondest memories are of the Cardinals (hey, I actually saw Stan Musial play), but my team is the Braves.

Yes……………………..This is what normally happens when an opponent plays BAMA.
“We were outcoached, we were outplayed and we were outphysicaled and that’s just the way it is,” said Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio, who worked under Alabama coach Nick Saban when he was at the helm for the Spartans. “Sometimes, you get an avalanche come on you and that’s just what happened.”
Asked what hit gave him a headache and sent him to the sidelines for good in the fourth, Cousins replied: “It was an accumulation of hits I took during the game.”
A cornerstone of coach Mark Dantonio’s rebuilding project, Cousins led a late rally in the fourth quarter and Dan Conroy kicked a 28-yard field goal in the third overtime to lift the 12th-ranked Spartans over the No. 18 Bulldogs 33-30 Monday in the Outback Bowl.

This will be another “big stage” game with this being Missouri’s first game in the SEC. You have to look at how we have faired on the big stage recently. Boise, LSU, any of the last two SEC openers for us against SC, heck even Colorado a couple years back for their NC reunion game. Colorado was more fired up for that game than we were. Then look at Missouri’s WR corp and our suspensions in the defensive backfield and you can guess what Missouri will be doing. Our inability to kill time off the clock will make this game a close one or a blow out by Missouri. They will be stoked.

Don’t fret the game Missouri fans, just know that the undisciplined, ill-conditioned team which actually shows up in September will bare no relationship to the overhype of the delusional UGA beaners. You will hear all sort of silliness from these beaners which will lead you to wanting to believe that the NE Patriots are coming to scrimmage but then wil LYAO at the actual team which shows up.
Just know that regardless of your winning margin, 3 pts or 23 pts, you stand NO CHANCE of beating the “Dawgs” because it will always be because they gave it to you.
Boise fans learned last season what SEC fans have known for years and many of them actually were worried before the game. UGA fans are famous for before-game delusions of superiority and after-game excuse making.

Good luck to the Gators, I’m hoping you have a good season. The East needs to step up and meet the challenge from the West.

San Diego Jacket,
You must be unemployed and very lonely in California if you are that obsessed!!! Enjoy your trip to Columbia and I hope you get them as fired- up as you have gotten the fans in Atlanta. Just curious, what does it make GT if they lose 90+% of their games in the last decade to what you call the “worst team in the nation”? Just asking

I don’t see it as a big stage marquee game. Maybe I am wrong. I saw a Mizzou game there several years ago. Mizzou fans are as rabid as any in the SEC. Thankfully they are more intelligent than Bama and Tech fans (of course, who isn’t). I have a few close friends that are Mizzou alum. They’re excited about the SEC but the general feeling is that it will take them a while to compete. They have no expectations on the UGA game and seem to be looking for a loss (my opinion of them, not thiers)

Mobile Dawg, you may well be correct on Muschamps experience level, but I hope not. I and most all Gators really like Muschamp, and we have faith in him. I know he is a DAWG, but he is a welcome addition in G’ville. One thing we may have in our favor in going to College Station is that Muschamp has coached there against the Aggies in the past. As for your DAWGS, I believe that Richt and your players will be out to prove they can win a big game early in the season this year. Thanks and also good luck to your DAWGS. The SEC East will be back.

I hope you listen to all of these anti-Ga. fans trying to talk smack. I hope you are expecting an easy blow-out against an over-matched, undiciplined, out of shape team. I hope you underestimate the importance of this game to the Dawgs. I hope you keep listening to the idiots…

Muschamp was a DGD. Was being the keyword. We are thankful for his contribution but, he is no longer a Dawg. Most civil Dawg fans wish him well as do I, except for one Saturday a year. He’s going to be a good coach if you guys don’t run him off too soon.

Mizzou, welcome to the SEC and good luck. As to A&M playing Florida–Muschamp was a defensive coordinator at Texas and knows them very well. Fla will be prepared–A&M should be strong in the first half, but will fizzle in second half due to lack of depth.
UGA 34 Mo 17–Fla 27 A&M 20. BTW, Mo if you ever play LSU in Baton Rouge at night–well good luck. UGA went out there and beat them several years ago at night. It was the loudest place I have ever been in the SEC or anywhere for that matter–pandamonium.

Gator Mike, I wasn’t saying Muschamp won’t make the grade, just that he’s not proven “yet”. I hope he is successful, and I would like the WLOCP become competetive, and relevant again. I miss the old days when the Dawgs actually “performed” in big games, win or lose. Boise was a killer last year, they didn’t have the atheletes we did, but they were much smarter, better coached, and prepared.

I fully agree with “bill arp” from 3:25 p.m. yesterday. If Murray doesn’t fumble and throw pick-6’s and throws to a receiver instead of behind, over, under, and ahead of them as usual, then UGA might win a big game, and this IS a big game. Another thing is that when we are matched evenly with a pretty good team……coaching and play calling comes into play. We all know how that has worked out before…………..LOOSE.

Over the last two, or three years in a row, UGA has LOST their opening game
(meaningful game) to SC and to Boise and to Okey State.
The PRIDE FACTOR for the staff and this team SHOULD carry the day but lately, with UGA folding like we tend to do in half way big games, I am just unsure, anymore about CMR led UGA teams. A Murray to me is a jittery, game day nervous, up tight twit of a QB and he a lacks the requisite on field tranquility to be really, really good and a WINNER.
We shall see. We shall see.
Goooooooooooooooo Dogs.

[...] Missouri’s Gary Pinkel expects ‘mammoth’ atmosphere in Columbia for Georgia game. The Bulldogs travel to Missouri to take on the Tigers on September 8th for what will be their first-ever matchup as a member of the SEC. “They understand we’re playing a great Georgia team. We understand that. When we switched leagues, that enthusiasm really for that game and from our fanbase in general has been remarkably positive for us,” Pinkel said in his first SEC teleconference call on Tuesday. Wow, UGA fans are hilarious! I was present in Boulder for the Colorado game a couple of years ago and how pathetic all the visiting Dawg fans were claiming the team was underachieving when the fact was that crappy Colorado team was just better than Georgia. For a program that is very rarely nationally relevant y’all sure do have big mouths. UGA is in for a fight in Columbia. Missouri has won 40 plus games over the last four years and have had more first and second round NFL draft picks during that time than the Dawgs program so I really don’t get all the big talk. A couple of them are playing up the road for the Falcons. And remember, talking smack is just embarrassing if you can’t back it up. Better let Florida, LSU and Bama do the talking from now on.

We as GA fans need to stop mentally losing games before it happens. It time for our fans to start treating less talent SEC teams like they should be treated. For instance if Mo was playing Alabama and Al had as many returning starters as we do, everybody would be calling this game to be a blowout. Over in the first half. Not a chance. Our scout team could beat this team. That is how Al fans treat less talent teams. So the word is out GA will dominate this whole game. It will start out with Mo having sucess on the first two drives and then reality would seek in. We are to big up front. And when Murray cranks up it will be a blowout Mo welcome to the SEC! This is not a team to make a name for yall. 45- 13 at least.

Mizzou has actually played in some big games/stadiums before guys, perhaps not week in – week out like they will now but it’s not going to be some kind of shock to them to have 100,000 fans screaming at them. I think UGA has the talent edge and the psych edge of competing at a very physical level – however, Mizzou is going to have a massive edge in hype and excitement, I just don’t see UGA getting excited to play in MO and they’ll have to have a workman-like attitude and ride out the initial wave of excitement from the Tigers. I think UGA wins but it’s closer than it should be.
