Georgia's Ken Malcome has embraced his role on the team as a power runner who 'can carry the load.' (UGA photo by Rob Saye)
ATHENS – This past summer, Ken Malcome said he hoped Georgia fans would call him by his hometown nickname of “Boo.” Less than a year later, Malcome has put the kibosh on that.
“I actually kind of stopped that,” Malcome said this past week. “Next year if I have a good year, I’ll let people call me that. I figured I haven’t done anything so I don’t deserve to be called Boo yet. I’ve told everybody just to call me Ken for now.”
Silly as it may seem, such a proclamation is just another sign of the tremendous growth in maturity the Bulldogs are observing in Malcome. The soon-to-be redshirt sophomore from Decatur started at tailback for the No. 1 offense in the G-Day Game this past Saturday. Not even six months before that, Malcome sat in coach Mark Richt’s office informing him of his intention to transfer due to a lack of playing time and general unhappiness.
“I don’t know for sure how he’s going to finish, but he’s on a great track right now,” Richt said of Malcome after the G-Day Game. “It does my heart good to see guys that are struggling, that don’t think they can make it, that maybe make a mistake that’s foolish and they just think it’s over. And then they stick it out; they decide to do it ‘the Georgia way;’ and then all of the sudden you see how good a guy can be; and then you all of the sudden you see him get confidence and you’re happy for them.
“Ken has really blossomed for us, as a football player and as a student and as a person. I’m just real happy for him.”
It’s hard to ignore Malcome’s progress. Here’s what has happened with him since deciding to quit the team the week before the Mississippi State game in late September:
Accordingly, Malcome didn’t turn in a jaw-dropping performance in the G-Day Game, totaling 32 yards on 8 carries. But he scored two touchdowns and Malcome’s work came against a stout No. 1 Georgia defense. He did a lot of small things well, which continued to draw the praise of coaches and teammates.
“Ken Malcome ran hard and ran through some tackles on both touchdown runs,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “It’s hard to get any running room when you’re using 21 personnel groupings and doing different things with your tight ends and fullbacks. But I saw some creases, I saw him run the ball hard and make some guys miss.”
Said Richt: “Malcome had a run on third-and-one-or-two and he hit the right side and there was nothing there and he either spun off or cut back and just kind of knocked it out and got the first down. Those are the kind of tough yards you’ve got to get to move the chains.”
Understanding what the Bulldogs are expecting out of him has been half the battle for Malcome. After a redshirt year, Malcome found himself bowed up and determined to prove he could be everything to everybody when Isaiah Crowell came in this past summer with the tag as the nation’s No. 1 running back prospect.
Georgia has since added to that number, bringing in the nation’s top back for the second straight year in Keith Marshall, recruiting another highly-touted back in Todd Gurley and keeping Richard Samuel at tailback. But instead of being disillusioned by the situation, Malcome has decided to get better at what the coaches are asking him to do. Now it sounds as if Malcome has adopted the team concept and can see where he fits in, now and in the future.
“I think what I bring to the backfield is I can carry the load,” said the 6-foot, 226-pound bruiser. “I’m a power back and that’s what I plan to be. I know my strengths and weaknesses and that’s what I do. We’ve got a lot of people that have speed and other things. I know what I can do and I’m going to stick to it. I’m trying not to do too much; just go out there and do what Coach tells me to do.”
That is not to say that Malcome is suddenly a mild-mannered, shrinking violet. He still carries himself with the bravado and swagger that characterized his personality as a star running back at Southwest DeKalb. It just has been re-channeled after 18 months of trial and tribulation as just one of many elite athletes at a powerhouse program.
“The motto this year is to be the best backfield in America,” said Malcome, his braggadocio fully intact. “I think we’ve got some time to go before we can say that, but I definitely see the potential for us being the backfield that ESPN and everybody’s talking about. But we’ve got to keep working. We’ve got to cut out the mistakes and other things like that. But that’s why we practice and if we keep it up I really believe we’ll be the best backfield in the nation.”
And maybe if all goes well, Malcome will feel worthy again of being called “Boo.”

You gotta love spring success stories. I love fall ones a lot better.
P.S. ESPN came out with its first Top 150 today. Florida and Georgia are off and running.
Florida has 7 commits in the Top 150 and Georgia has 6. Georgia will sign a lot more than Florida this year, as Florida has only 16 players on the roster scheduled not to return next year off a roster of around 80 or 81 players. Looks like maybe 20 or 21 recruits for Florida and I hear Georgia could sign the full amount – 28…or even up to 30 with early enrollees, etc.

Defenses are going to need about 13 players to handle us with our backfield…. That little swing pass to Branden Harton during the spring game, nobody was around him for 30-40 yards…Load up the Box and we will swing it wide… Cover us 4 and 5 wide and we will bust Malcome or IC up the middle….

Funny to me how everyone seemed to have forgotten about Malcome last year. He was a 4 star blue chipper and considered to be one of the 10 best backs in the country coming out in 2010. It was clear that at the end of last year he was our best runner, and he showed it again this past Saturday. Look forward to a season with plenty of depth at the position, but I would not be surprised if Malcome continues to improve and perhaps even be the starter next season. Not sure any of the other backs sans Gurley are built to carry the load the Malcome is.

I could see this guy being our #1 with IC #2 RS #3 then redshirt the freshman an if you need that fourth back I like Harton. And I know the whole Knowshon issue will be brought up, but I say its worth it.

GREAT STORY CHIP!! I have noticed that all the stories you do is DEAD ON IT! Even if its about a guy that is not living up to his potential! Like you said, Ken is getting the tough yards in between the tackles. Lately he gets hit at the line, but he keeps his legs moving with great balance and moves the pile 3-4 yards. You take a little back like Harton though, he cant run between the tackles and Bobo needs to quit having him try. Harton needs to get the ball on screens to where he can use his ability to make guys miss in space! I sure hope Bobo finally realizes each guys strength , and use them the right way! GO DAWGS!

I haven’t even seen Marshall or Gurley and I am really excited about TB for the Dawgs in ‘12. Malcome is an NFL type back and he certainly has NFL potential. He is competitive now, but getting stronger, bigger and faster this summer really plays to his strengths. Ken reminds me of LSU’s TBs–very tough to tackle and they just wear you out. IC is still a tremendous talent, and he is just going to get better and better. When I was watching IC on GDay, I had the feeling he could break one at any minute, even though he didn’t. With Malcome, it is fun watching how many tacklers he can carry. Against Auburn, KY, and Tech, there were times when he was pushing a pile with 6-8 defenders in it by himself! He is strong, but he has great balance and lean, and he leverages himself well off of other players after being hit. Malcome and Crowell complement each other beautifully, and it will be nice having both of them in tough SEC games, much like LSU profited with their depth at TB. I hope they move Samuel to FB. Not that he couldn’t play TB, but having his talent on the field with any of our TBs is going to present a problem for defensive coordinators. Samuel can block like a FB, run and catch like a TB, and he can split out. So, DCs don’t know whether we will line up in a power I, or do a quick split to a wide open shotgun. Marshall and Gurley add depth and could contribute more as the year goes on. If we can stay out of trouble and stay healthy we have the deepest TB roster in a very long time. We’ll see how good they can become. I’m encouraged that they looked as good as they did Saturday against one of the top run Ds in the country last year.

Andone, counterpoint: I think the committee approach has been vindicated. In fact, I’m not sure a one many show will even work in the current SEC. Defenses are so big, strong, and fast, they can pound any one man severely. The last four years’ champs were all run by committee. Tebow and Co., Ingram and Richardson, Newton and Co., and Richardson/Lacy and Co., along with the four horsemen from LSU last year–they only seem to vindicate it. Lattimore is a glaring example of a successful one man show in the modern SEC, but his injuries have cost SC both years very dearly. He is very tough and gifted, but you wonder if keeping in the game all the time contributed.

Running back is certainly not a problem for the Dawgs this upcoming season. O-line and WR are the only question marks on the offensive side of the ball. WR should be solid if Mitchell returns to play offense after the suspensions are over.

It would be great to see malcome in the i formation running the toss sweep “downhill” behind a big fb and at least one pulling guard. That was our bread and butter for years but now the brains trust would rather “trick ” the defense by running the draw out of the shotgun even though everyone knows what is about to be called. Let our backs use their athleticism and power every now and then and take advantage of a more athletic o-line

Richt is not going to start this guy over 4 other running backs who are much more talented then he is. He isn’t going to use a redshirt on Marshall and only play him for 2 years. There is a reason that Malcome wasn’t getting much playing time before. He should have transferred if he wants to play and he is killing his NFL chances by staying.

Our RB positions will be the strength of our OFFENSE If Bobo will use them properly. I. C. and Ken both ran with authority and purpose. It would be a mistake to overlook Richard Samuel. He actually scared the hell out of the DBs when he went wide. You could see their faces, and they were like” OH SH* T!” I thought I was gonna die laughing. What a BRUTUS. Our whole season depends on teamwork, but what it really comes down to is one man. Our whole season is in Coach Bobos hands. If he doesn’t protect the young O-line with plays that don’t put too much pressure on them, too soon, we will win out. Short to medium passes, screens, hitting the RBs out of the backfield. Use our Running game. Two tight-end sets, get Lynch involved. We have so many weapons, but our Achilles Heel will be Bobo and his play-calling protecting our O-line till they gell. One man who did a good job calling the G-day game. BOBO…

BfromE, exactly right on TB being a strength and O line being the big unknown. However, I think we are very strong and deep at receiver. We add some nice talent in Scott Wesley and return talent in Wooten(from injury), as well as return Conley, Mitchell, King, Brown, Bennett, and several others. Mitchell, Scott Wesley, and King can fly; Conley and Bennett have great hands, and Brown is very tall…A whole lot of talent and speed in that list, but back to A: if we can’t protect Murray *a lot* better than we did last year, then they will be somewhat neutralized–and we graduated three starters off the line. They have their work cut out.

If my memory serves me, he started multiple games, including our bowl game, and he started GDay. The coaches are very pleased with his play, and they are talking him up. There is plenty of room for multiple TBs at UGA. Another 10 pounds of muscle, and he is going to be a headache to bring down. And don’t forget, sometimes our third and fourth string TBs go on to have NFL careers. This is tailback U you know. I wouldn’t get too excited about freshmen making an immediate impact. Yes sirs! I knew the Dawgs is loaded this year. With Malcome, Crowell and Marshal we got that talents to display power running game. Add that with the passes and our offenses can’t be stoppee. I knew its coming togethers right in time for Dawgs to own East and then knock off Bammers or LSUers on way to guaranted BCS win by SEC champs the Dawgs. And another thing is how Coach Grantham built defense into Junkyard! from replacing the Wet Willie. Then Coach Richt is doing such a good job recruiting that class likely be full by end of May. That allows us to pick and choose while stockpiling the talents. The only one can mess this up is Adams if in he tries to limit recruiting and stockpile of developmental practicing squad. But other than that things is set for Dawgs.

Last year’s offensive line fit Malcolme’s strengths. This year’s line is more suited for the slash and burn style of Crowell and Marshall because of their lack of girth and experience. I am very curious to see how Richt and BoBo employ a little bit of a “power” running game into the scheme without disrupting the rhythm. This needs to be a run-oriented team in order to cut down on “pressure” game mistakes by Murray. More sprint draws and bootlegs for Murray would help. Georgia SHOULD finish no worse than 2nd in rushing in the SEC. Let’s just wait and see. Something tells me with the lack of secondary depth, Georgia will just try to run the ball down people’s throats for the first 4 games.

He rushed for 39 yards on 12 carries against Tech. A 3.25 average and no TD’s. You have a weird definition of nicely. His career record right now is 51 yds. He still has yet to score a rushing TD. GT Bob. Georgia Tech is such a beautiful school and campus in Atlanta. You are downtown in the hub of the south. Aren’t you sick of losing? Shouldn’t you demand better out of your coaches and your athletic department for your football team? Paul Johnson’s plays are high school offense and they haven’t worked effectively. I think you could have it so much better…and the only successful season you have had with PJ was one where the wins were vacated because of cheating. I think you should stop wasting your time on Georgia blogs and write to your AD or the school president demanding that you should get the kind of program that gives UGA a run for its money. That you are sick of the kind of program that makes the pundits say Georgia has an ‘easy schedule’. The kind of program that would make you proud instead of angry; jealous and always venting on the blogs of your arch enemy. One that views you sadly as just a school that beats them once every decade. Or…better yet….do nothing at all. I guess I’d rather have Paul Johnson for a few more years! GO DAWGS 10-1!!!! 31-17!!!!

[...] Don’t look now, but there is a new player in the game for Georgia at RB. And his name is not Isaiah Crowell or Keith Marshall – it’s Ken Malcome. Malcome had informed Mark Richt of his intention to transfer this past year, but he thought twice about it. I’m trying not to do too much; just go out there and do what Coach tells me to do.” [AJC] [...]

CHDawg…..I also like Samuel at FB. We did not have a true FB last year and we were predictable. If you add him to wr’s sets not many linebackers could cover him for long.
You mentioned our line lost 3 starters and you have concerns about this new group. We could not protect Murray with the old group, we had a hard time moving the pile, so what is the problem. We needed a new group because the old group was not up to SEC standards. This new group of O-Linemen will be a source of pride for this team.

If our line ends up being above average for the SEC, I think we will be tough to beat by anybody. Play calling can help them out, too. Being predictable and allowing opposing DCs to load the box every play makes the line’s job a lot harder imho.

I can’t wait to see all the Missouri idiots on this blog come summer time…lol. And why is somebody from Tech bringing up SAT scores and academics? As a black male, I think college athletics is pathetic when it comes to educating athletes. They only have them on campus for one thing: football, football, and more football. They are only required, I think, to take a minimum 6 semester hours per term. Then their is practice, gym, film session, and running sessions everyday, if not twice a day. And here folks say “it’s not the coaches fault he doesn’t go to class” is a bit ignorant of the fact that it’s the coaches who occupy at least 12 hours of their day, except on Sunday. GTBob, yes, Malcome got 39 yds on 12 carries, but let’s recall the game. Malcome got all 39 yards on 9 carries in the 4th qtr. What made this special was that Bobo wanted to run out the clock form 6.5 minutes, so he handed it to Malcome to attack the overloaded Tech front–four times in a row. Everybody knew we weren’t likely to throw, and Malcome still averaged 6 yards per carry. CMB ended up giving it to him *9* times in a row, and if you look at the tape, you will see that Tech finally brought everybody–pretty much all eleven defenders up to try and stop Malcome, which they couldn’t do. They finally did 39 yards and nine plays later in Tech territory, after the Dawgs ran the clock down to ~1.5 minutes and Tech had used their timeouts up. BTW, he showed similar strength in several other games. It is much more about seeing his ability and using your brain than looking at statistics. That is the knock on GT grads you know.

Mike Bobo: “It’s hard to get any running room when you’re using 21 personnel groupings and doing different things with your tight ends and fullbacks.”
Well coach, maybe you should lay off the intricate “personnel groupings” and start working on getting that running room. Why on God’s green earth are we doing ANYTHING that makes it difficult to get running room?!?!?!?! I know its spring practice and you’re working on a lot of different things but after our struggles in the running game last year I cannot believe I just read that quote.
Mike Bobo simply does not get it and never will. This isn’t rocket science. He’s trying to make this offense run before it can even walk. Our offensive line cannot block a lick against a good defense and he’s working on 21 different personnel groupings?!?!?!?!?! LSU and Michigan State were 2 yards deep in our backfield on every single running play and he’s worried about doing “different things” with the tight ends and fullbacks?!?!?!?!?!?! We don’t need a complicated play book right now Bobo. This offense needs to get back to the basics. The offensive line needs to learn how to block and push people back. Murray needs to learn how to protect the ball better. The running backs need to learn how to not go down on first contact (something that happened a lot last year). All the fanch schmancy plays in the world will not do us any good until these things happen. One definition of stupidity is making something more complicated than it really is. Bobo is out to lunch.
Thanks.

142 yrds in three games is now translated to a guaranteed NFL back and something for SEC teans to worry about? Good lord.
Hades, that Lattimore kid is averaging that against UGA in just the 4th Q along the last two years and Trent Richardson would do the same, yet any first down run by UGA RB gets a full blown article on the AJC.
No wonder UGA is now widely known at the perennial preseason MNC winners and their fans believe the nonsense.

Malcome could be the guy to get you those few tough yards when you need them. He appears to be a load to bring down, and if he can pop through a hole, it would seem to be stupid to try and arm tackle him. He needs to not fall back into fumbling at times like he did last year, but so far, the 2012 version of Malcome seems to have left that behind him. He will most likely be #2 behind Crowell, which should give him at least 15 carries on average per game. Marshall will get some carries and possibly even Gurley, once he is on campus. Harton will also see a few carries a game, so there should never be a time, we have a winded or wounded back on the field.
Now, if our OL starts gelling as a unit in the fall, the running game should be able to account for at least 50% of the offensive plays, and keep UGA from becoming too one dimensional. This will help the QB, ball control and keep the defense fresh, as they have the ability to be lights out.

UGA Insider,
I would be interested where you came up with that mostly running the ball analogy. UGA will never run the ball at a 70/30% clip, no matter who the RB’s are. That is the definition of one dimensional, and will not work in the SEC. 50/50% maybe, but against SEC defenses, you had better have more than just a running game. Ask LSU how that worked against Alabama in the NC game. They didn’t have a QB they trusted enough, so they tried running the whole game for the most part and see where it got them.

Barring injury I see Crowell, Samuel and Malcome providing us with a three-pronged attack most of the time with Marshall and Gurley being worked in carefully. A lot of folks criticized Crowell last year(unfairly in my opinion some of the time) but I believe he is a perfect example of what asking too much of a true freshman will get you in the SEC.

Glad to see Ken is doing well. You can only start to think bad things when transferring talk comes up and that a player will never regain their form or hit their potential, leading towards a downward spiral in life. But it is awesome to hear that Ken is getting it together, maximizing the potential given to him and making the best decisions to find his way to the top of the list in the backfield. The picture used in this article is pretty inspiring and he looks good in that Georgia uniform, like you would picture a good football player looking suited up and all. Keep up the hard work, because the competition will not stop, and they’ll want it even more when they realize you’re on top and they aren’t.

Samuels will be at fullback with Ogletree and Crowell, Malcome,Marshall and Gurley will play Tailback. All will get plenty of carries. How many times has a running back at Georgia gone an entire season and didn’t miss 2 to 5 games because of a foot , a knee , concussion, or hand injury. We need all the great backs we can get because to have a successful balance attack if one of our running backs go down the production from the next guy can’t fall off , any.
Richt is really liking our defense which could be dominate like Alabama’s was last year in the championship game and with this many great running backs we are set up to have a great year. The biggest thing that Bobo needs to make sure of is that Murray doesn’t turn the ball over. With a great defense not making mistakes will be enough to win the close ones.

7576DAWG,
I agree with your post, but I think Bobo’s biggest problem he needs to face is not sitting on a three point lead in the first half and continuing to beat down opposing defenses and putting points on the board. I feel as if he takes his foot off the pedal, making the defense work extra hard, and in the end we were relying on a kicker that couldn’t be relied on. Murray is turnover prone, but he is also in situations where he is forced to make things happen, which is usually when Bobo is playing catchup since he turned the heat off due to a small lead.

Malcom has come on strong. But lets not kid our selves IC will be the starter and Ken will back up. IC has G.Hearst like quality and Ken is R. Hampton as best.

We hope that Malcome is as good as Hampton. Rodney Hampton was a first round draft pick. I think one year he averaged around 7 ypc at UGA.

My favorite Malcome story is when he came into the SEC championship game and the fans called his name Boo, everyone thought it was the fans booing Crowell.

I hate Tech; I hate whining Techies; If Satan fielded a team against Tech, I would be on the demons’ sideline pulling for them to GATA.

Hopefull CMR will redshirt one of the RBs. I hate it when CMR wastes players careers by not redshirting the right players… Mason is a prime example.. There is nothing wrong with taking a redshirt.

Such short memories……..We really needed Boo last year, but seemed like when he wasn’t hurt, he was suspended. Looks like both Boo and I.C. grew up a lil’ bit.
What I do take from last year about Boo, is watching him lay hat against LSU, when it appeared that the other dawgs had ’bout had it.
I like his fire. If he stays healthy, he will give us a physicality we have been missin’.

RS will be the workhorse on short yardage situations this year. I’ve never seen any running back play like he did in the UF game last year. The will and determination was obvious and amazing. He was running so hard and downhill it was like I could hear him screaming through the tv as he was taking every step. I hope Boo gets his shot because he obviously has talent. Without seeing proof of any change I would rather see him in there than the IC of last year. I hope everyone stays healthy but It’s nice to know we’ve got talent backing up whoever the starters are this year. Go Dawgs!
