It’s Red vs. Black as UGA’s annual G-Day gets underway

ATHENS – Greetings from Sanford Stadium on an absolutely gorgeous Saturday afternoon. It’s 75 degrees and there isn’t a cloud in the sky that I can see from the South side press box.

The teams just came on the field to start their warmups for the 3 p.m. start. The Red Team, featuring the No. 1 offense, is dressed in red jerseys. The Black Team, featuring the No. 1 defense, is in white jerseys. If you’re unable to be here for the game, you’ll be able to watch a television replay at 5 p.m. this evening. In the meantime, the Georgia Bulldog Radio Network is broadcasting the game so check your local networks to listen in.

There’s been a lot going on in Athens all day. The baseball team is playing Ole Miss up at Foley Field. There was a fundraiser for Kasyn Olivadotti — the 4-year-old daughter of UGA linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti — who is battling Leukemia (check the Kasyn Cares Fund at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to see what you can do). And there was a flag football game between Georgia football lettermen just a little while ago. Among the 60 players to participate were former stars such as Doak Walker Award winner Garrison Hearst and linebacker John Brantley and more obscure lettermen such as Andre “Pulpwood” Smith and Matt Storm.

Here’s a link to the story I wrote previewing today’s “game.”

I’ll be hanging out here in the press box throughout the game and provide updates in the comments thread when there is something to report. So have at it everybody!

My questions to Coach Will Friend: 1) Why only one non-commit OL @ G-Day game? 2) Where is JP Vonashek; an OL potential commit who on Monday was ready to commit on Tuesday morning? 3) Why haven’t you closed the deal on D Seymour, son of former UGA player Richard Seymour? 4) Why haven’t you closed the deal more than (1) commit?
WITH ONLY (3) COMMITS LAST YEAR AND ONLY (1) THIS YEAR, I HAVE LOST CONFIDENCE IN YOUR RECRUITING ABILITIES!! Get Max Garcia and (4) other lineman then I believe you should be in hi-level college football!!

THE PROBLEM WITH UGA IS EXEMPLIFIED TODAY BY MURRAY BEING OUTSHINED. AND IT WOULDN’T MATTER IF MURRAY WAS OUTSHINED EVERY DAY. ONCE RICHT MAKES UP HIS MIND HE DOESN’T “UNMAKE” IT VERY READILY.

THAT’S WHY, FOR EXAMPLE, MORENO DIDN’T REALLY GET ACTION UNTIL BROWN WAS HURT. HAD THOMAS BROWN STAYED WELL, IT WAS UNLIKELY THAT MORENO WOULD SEE PLAYING TIME. THUS BE IT.

I don’t know why you guys put a lot of stock in these spring games. It’s a glorified practice that has no baring on how the season will play out. Carlton Thomas dominated one year and he is and has always been a 2nd-3rd string back…..

Come on guys, engage the brains. Murray was always against a very tough number one D. LSU didn’t even get a first down until the second half. Murray did a good job, taking what was there and converting it into big plays. I was very pleased with Mason and Lemay, but both are clearly behind Murray imo.

No running game. And where’s that great defense? Look for another fifth place finish in the conference.

I might buy 5th in the nation, but that is only if our line doesn’t mature enough, we can’t find a kicker, or our players can’t grow past the 13 year old level in self discipline off of the field! If we can fix those three issues, I look for a run on the crown, but the Line will be the tallest order. They are going to have be very good at the SEC level, and that is hard even for veteran lines. Our offensive position players are going to tear it up if they can block imho.

CHDawg: you also forgot to mention how Murray’s WR’s kept dropping the ball like a bunch of losers( the drop by Malcolm Mitchell was the absolute worst. We convert on some of those throws and that score is a lot closer.

That being said, that INT that Murray threw to Morris Claiborne was just terrible. I know his team was down 35-10 because the defense and special teams quit trying, but did he really think he could just lob it up to Malcolm Mitchell and think he’d beat a top 5 NFL draft pick CB ?? Youngster, you got another thing coming. There are certain guys you can pick on and he’s not one of them. That being said, how many Claiborne’s is he going to face? Probably not too many.

dan

@elephantdawg: who cares about completion percentage? LSU’s defense was shutting teams down left and right. Even if the QB is completing 80% of their throws, if its not translating into TD’s and LSU is still winning by 30 points, who cares?

CHDawg

Dan, Good points. Murray has lost his composure a couple of times, and that was one of them, but you are right about the drops–and Mitchell almost never drops it. I really liked the swing passes today. I wish they had run a bunch of screens for practice. Our screen execution was abysmal last year. I sure hope we call plays that will help our offense deal with our young line. If they come out and bulldoze everybody then that is easy to cope with. If they run into problems, especially against some of the better SEC Ds, we really need a game plan that helps them out–screens, flares, rollouts, trick plays. The other thing I loved was hearing that fine Georgia Bulldog, Richard Samuel, is willing to work at FB. The thing is, he could play either place, but having him at FB with one of our dangerous TBs will prove to be a real problem for DCs. You can’t key on the TB with Samuel in there, and he can knock a LB’s head off, too.

I thought O-Line played pretty well today. I was impressed by the coverage they afforded the QB’s. I would like to see less dropped passes and overthrown passes. The defense seemed to play better with Murray on the field. That fuels the whole Mason is better than Murray hoop-lah. I like how Murray broke tons of UGA QB records last year, but I guess that makes him a bad QB!!! LOL. You guys gotta get a life and let the coaches coach. Unless you wanna try it out…. but I would rather you didn’t. Highest scoring GDay game I have seen… don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing, but anyways…. GO DAWGS!

MattDawg, beg to disagree about Murray’s protection. Some times he would take 5 or 7 steps and throw up a prayer without even looking. I know it was a timing pattern, etc., and it was against a great defense, but I’m just saying…….
