Backups come up with play of game as Red edges Black 32-21 in G-Day Game

G-DAY GAME REPORT

Reuben Faloughi slapped the ball loose from quarterback Parker Welch and outside linebacker Ricky Lowe snatched it out of the air in mid-stride and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown.
“Ricky Lowe making a play,” Georgia coach Mark Richt marveled afterward. “That was awesome!”
Executed with just 1:40 left in the fourth quarter, that proved to be the game-winning play as Lowe’s Red team held on to defeat the Black 32-31 before 44,117. Made by one former and one current walkon, it was AJC Play of the Day for G-Day.
“That was more contact on the quarterback than we’ve had all spring,” Richt said with a laugh. “ . . . But the ball got hit, pops up and Ricky made a play and takes it to the house.”
That play represented one half of a surprisingly exciting ending to an otherwise dull intrasquad scrimmage. On the ensuing possession, tight end Jay Rome hauled in a pass in the flat from Christian LeMay, split two diving defenders and rambled 66 yards for a touchdown. But Black team coach Todd Grantham elected to go for the win and LeMay’s two-point conversion pass failed.
Jarvis Jones confident in D
At halftime of Saturday’s G-Day game, Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones was presented a huge crystal trophy from College Sports Performance Awards, which named him their linebacker of the year for 2011.
“Fifty-five pounds,” Jones said the trophy weighed. “When they handed it me, I went ‘ugh.’”
That could serve as a metaphor for Jones as he’ll be carrying a heavy load during the Bulldogs’ first few games of the coming season. Georgia is expected to be without several defensive players due to suspensions and dismissals.
That’s particularly disappointing for Jones, who immediately bagged the idea of entering the NFL draft and convinced several of his draft-eligible teammates to stay with him. But the All-American from Columbus said the attrition may end up being a blessing in disguise for Georgia.
“Situations happen, like they’re always going to happen,” said Jones, who led the SEC in quarterback sacks. “So we just have to deal with it and build off it. We’re going to continue to get better and I’ve seen a lot of the young guys stepping up and improving their games.”
Several of those “young guys” stood out Saturday, including sophomore linebacker Ramik Wilson (7 tackles, 1 INT), safety Quintavius Harrow (5 tackles, sack) and cornerback Devin Bowman (4 tackles).
New targets for Murray
Georgia has a largely veteran receiving corps. But there were two new players who stood out during Saturday’s G-Day Game.
Justin Scott-Wesley, a redshirt freshman split end from Camilla, led the Red team receivers with three catches for 46 yards. Rome, a redshirt freshman from Valdosta, led the Black team in receiving yards with 73 yards on two catches, including a spectacular 66-yard touchdown.
Interestingly, both players joined the team late this year as they were competing in other sports. Rome is a forward on the basketball team and Scott-Wesley is a sprinter in track.
“Those guys have definitely gotten better all spring,” quarterback Aaron Murray remarked. Hopefully they’ll both be fully back for us now and continue to get more reps. That’s the biggest thing: They were behind the 8-ball just timing wise since they were unable to work with us in January and February and March. But they’ve picked it up fast and, now that we’ve got them to ourselves, they should get even better.”
New pecking order for running backs
It has been nothing but rave reviews for tailback Ken Malcome all spring and those assessments were validated Saturday as the sophomore from Decatur started with the No. 1 offense.
Malcome responded with 32 yards on 8 carries and scored two of the three rushing touchdowns on the day. One came on a 10-yard touchdown run in which he broke three tackles to get into the end zone.
Malcome alternated first-half series with sophomore Isaiah Crowell, who finished with 39 yards on 10 carries.
“Ken Malcome ran hard and ran through some tackles on both touchdown runs,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “The growth and maturity of those young backs — and Isaiah and Ken are both young — has come a long way.”
Crowell was most pleased to get through the spring healthy after an injury-plagued freshman season. “I stayed out there every day [this spring],” he said. “I think it was a good thing for my coaches to see.”
The quarterback picture
Hutson Mason, a quarterback who might not play at all in the fall, played for both sides in Georgia’s spring game.
Georgia’s plan, if all goes well, is to redshirt Mason in order to put a year of separation between the end of his eligibility and that of Murray. But for purposes of spring practice, coaches emphasized that Mason had to prepare as if he’d play this season, as he undoubtedly would in the event of an early injury to Murray.
Mason completed 9 of 12 passes for 133 yards in the G-Day game — 5-of-8 including a touchdown throw for the victorious Red team and 4-of-4 for the Black team. Afterward, he expressed satisfaction about his spring and the coaches’ plan for him in the fall.
“It really just depends on how comfortable they are with other guys [as backup quarterbacks] and if Murray gets hurt,” Mason said. “As long as Murray stays healthy, I’ll probably get my redshirt.”
The coaches showed what they thought of Mason’s progress by naming him and Murray co-MVPs on offense for spring practice.
“To think these coaches think highly enough of me [to share the honor] with a quarterback who is known as one of the best in the SEC, I think that speaks volumes to my development and potential,” Mason said. “All I can do is wait and try to be as prepared as possible when I get my opportunities on Saturdays.”
Richt said after the G-Day game that Mason showed why the coaches regard him so highly: “Fans by the end of the game got to see what we like so much about Hutson. . . . He just has an uncanny ability to stand in there and cut that ball loose under pressure and find the right guy.”
In the stands
An announced crowd of 44,117 showed up on a beautiful, sunny, 75-degree afternoon at Sanford Stadium.
It should be noted that, since tickets were not sold (admission was free) and fans were not counted as they entered the gates, the announced attendance was basically a ballpark figure.
The crowd was sizable enough to blanket most portions of the lower deck in red during the first half.
The announced attendance for the previous four G-Day games: 43, 117 last year; 38,742 in 2010; 42,458 in 2009; and 19,874 in 2008, when rain held down the crowd.

Murray, solidly entrenched as Georgia’s No. 1 QB, completed seven of 17 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown on the Red team. Murray praised the progress of the rebuilding offensive line through spring practice.
“The first week, it might have looked like, ‘Man, they’ve got a lot of work to do,’ but those guys have done unbelievably from from Week 2 to Week 3 to now,” Murray said. “The progress they have made is tremendous. . . . They’re doing a great job against probably one of the best defensive lines in the country and one of the best defenses in the country.” . . .
Quarterback Christian LeMay completed seven of 10 passes for 154 yards for the Black team. “He showed some really nice touch at times,” Richt said. . . . Tailback Brandon Harton caught six passes for the Black team. . . There were only six penalties for 25 yards in the game, three infractions by each side. . . . Richt, summing up the day: “It was just good for our fans to see guys make plays, [fans] who normally don’t get to see it everyday at practice.”

Dawgs looked great! The position players on O looked very strong and deep. Defense looks great. Kickers looked like a HS punt and kick competition at times. The O line is the key to 12 imo. If they can be a solid SEC front, I think we are going to be mighty tough to beat. Go Dawgs, and let’s stay in church and out of trouble this summer!

In the name of all that is holy, move Burnette to Center, and start Mark Beard at guard. Try like hell to get Xzavier Ward ready. Put him at left tackle, and move Gates to Right tackle. That is by far the worst looking, least athletic offensive line ever. IC and Boo are going to get killed. I swear Richt and Bobo should be made to run behind them. Then you would see them recruit legitimate SEC caliber athletes, rather than their private school favorites. This is incredible. Along with your true freshmen punter and kicker.Richt should be canned.

Fun game today. Yes, the punting looked bad, but I remember a couple of years ago when Drew Butler looked awful in the G-Day game, too. I think he got things going rather nicely. No one got hurt today, and that is a big deal. Can’t wait until August.

LOL…I swear I am as big a dawg fan as any of you on here and I know and understand football as well as any of us, but some of us really overreact to a glorified spring practice. This means nothing. John Theus will make a huge difference on the O-line when he gets here. I don’t care if Murray went 0-30 today, he is a top 5 QB in the nation and some of us act as if he’s not the best QB on campus. Stats today mean nothing. Just a practice in front of 40K people. This team is going to be really really deep on both sides. I just pray we have at least an average kicker and punter.

It was 32-31. There were multiple defensive touchdowns and 2 point conversions. Also, the D had some decent turnovers that set up good field position for the offense. The defense did some pretty decent scoring themselves to create that score – it wasn’t just the offense dominating (there were some nice plays on both sides, along with some bad ones).

Do you have something against David Andrews at Center? He played (almost?) every offensive snap for BOTH teams. The guy rarely (if ever) actually went to the sideline. Played well overall, but still could improve. Burnette took a lot of plays off when on the field. Lee looked good. Didn’t focus on Gates or Beard much. Austin Long was horrible. He was getting beat in pass pro all day by everyone and only held his man when the TE helped. His brother, Hunter, was ok. Dantzler wasn’t much better. Ok in run support, but way too top heavy in pass pro. Leans forward hunching his whole back too much and needs to lower his center of gravity towards the quads more. Also, slow feet. All you need is a speed end to easily get around him. Kolton Houston was the best RT of the day. He gave up one or two plays to washington and had a false start, but generally, he held his own. Good job pulling and getting to the second level. Pretty quick for his size. Did ok against the 5 and 9 technique combo (even sans TE). When Bowman beat Dantzler all D could do was throw his body and roll on the ground (literally) to try and stop B. I’d love to see the defense use a 5 and 9 technique combo more often. Heck, even the wide 9 the Philly Eagles use would be awesome. Unfortunately, our O-line would get beat all day with that. Still, good game. I think there’s potential if people get healthy and they find the right combination in the fall.

That was one of the best analyses I have seen of our o-line ever on these ajc comments. Thank you for sharing. It really helps to read comments from someone who clearly knows a lot about o-line play and technique. I actually am going to copy and paste your post into a document I save and I am going to look up the techniques you refer to and look for the things you mention about each player in games this fall.

No major injuries this spring or in the G- game. About as as good as it gets. I still say we are doing something wrong because Georgia has entirely too many hamstring injuries. I am not knowledgeable enough to know why but someone has to have some kind of idea of how we can cut that type injury way down.

Is this two or 3 straight years that other quarterbacks will have had a better spring then Murray. LeMay who is a unknown quarterback who broke state records in passing will never play. Even if Murray makes bad decisions like last year. Look Mason had a better spring last year and look at what happened. Richt I love you as a UGA coach but let the better quarterback play. We as UGA fans deserve that. Defense is solid. Gonna be real good defensively. Just think your best running back didn’t play. Good job overall . Just hope that the offense takes off. Fan, that was a great comment on the O-line. Looks like you have the technicalities down a lot better than most, including myself. However, you’re not quite as knowledgeable as tidy bowl, so let me spell it our for you…as mentioned here on many previous occassions, by tidy bowl himself.
1. Justin Anderson is the greatest O-lineman in history.
2. Ben Jones might be an ALL-SEC and AA Center, but he couldn’t make the team at Alabama.
3. Big, heavy boys are sexy when they sweat.
4. Justin Anderson is the greatest O-lineman in history.
5. I played 3rd string guard in high school, well junior high, and I know more than every college coach in the land. Except for Lord Saban, we’re even.
6. Justin Anderson (ahhhh, swoon) is the greatest O-lineman in history.

Lemay, LeMay, What more else can we say. Run, pass, and kicking a$$! Don’t let this be another D.J. Shockley situation. Whether Dawg Fans like it or not, it’s gonna start looking racially bias. I know goe ahead and slam me with comments, but here’s the facts, Shockley, like LeMay came in with a higher national ranking than Greene, was more versatile in run/pass situations and never fully given a chance to lead this team until after GREENE left. LeMay comes in with a Higher national ranking, looks more accurate, mobile, and prepared to compete, but like Shockley won’t be given a chance to take over. CMR, your critics will float to the top like dead bodies from a sank ship with any bad QB play this year.

Not as good as Lacy, Fowler, Yeldon, Hart, and last on the list is a kid from Gainesville by the name of Sims,………………………..Oh by the way, Yeldon is a true freshman.
Yeldon ran 16 times for a game-high 88 yards and caught five passes for a game-high 91 yards and one touchdown, a tackle-breaking 50-yarder. He won the Dixie Howell Most Valuable Player of the Game Award and led the White team – the first-team defense and second-team offense – to a 24-15 victory over the Crimson team.
The 6-foot-2, 216-pound early enrollee from Daphne High School was the runaway star of Alabama’s A-Day game in front of a crowd of 78,526 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
UGA had 44K at the game.

King Daddy thing is though, it is all the negative things that we saw that are gonna up and bite us in the arse next season. People are making excuses, just like last season, for Murray’s inability to play a good game against a decent defense. No regardless of what Hard Truth Soldier has to say LeMay shouldn’t be given the starting QB job. Not just yet anyway and if the kid was white he would not be championing him so hard, but I don’t see why Mason isn’t give a fair shake. He’s right about one thing though. Right is gonna stay with Murray whether he’s the best QB or not.
Mr Hard Truth this is nothing like the Green/Shockley scenario. David Greene was the starting QB and did nothing wrong to relinquish that spot. Shockley just had the misfortune of playing behind one of the best QBs to ever come out of Georgia. I just wish that Shockey had more than one year to prove himself though. I think that Mason may be the best QB on the team right now, but because Murray and LeMay had more stars in front of their name coming out of high school he may never get the chance to prove it.

The starting QB goes 7 for 17??? The non-starting QBs go 16 for 22??? The starting QB averages 16 yards per completion. The non-starting QBs average 15 yards per completion. The starting Qb does this playing with the starting offense. The non-starting QBs do it mostly with the non-starting offense.
Make sense?? Now go ahead and tell me how the coaches see what they all do in practice and we don’t. Well, I have seen what the starting QB does in games and a lot of what we see in games is not good, especially big games and especially in the fourth quarter of big games when the outcome is on the line.
There’s got to be something going on here that we just don’t know.

Tuskaloser is at least 3 times as big as Athens, so Alabama should have at least 3 times as many fans at their spring game as the dawgs do. I am just as concerned about Georgia’s Quarterback situation as a lot of you. The question about Murray is, what will he do under pressure this year. Last year no Quarterback in the nation was worst under pressure. CMR , Bobo and Grantham has made it real clear that they intend to play the best players at every position EXCEPT QUARTERBACK. CMR and Bobo hopes that a much improved running game will take enough pressure off Murray that he won’t get into PANIC MODE, which could very well be the case. It may be asking a lot but I hope they are right. The big question is when and if Murray go’s into PANIC MODE this year will Mason or LeMay be used. Once Murray go’s into PANIC MODE it will only get worst. CMR, Bobo and myself hope Murray proves he can handle pressure in his third year as Quarterback but all I am asking, IF HE PROVE TO BE THE SAME QUARTERBACK WE HAVE SEEN THE LAST 2 YEARS, WHAT CHANGES WILL BE MADE?

Playing Murray yesterday did not help any. What I wanted to see was Mason and especially LeMay play against the number one defense. Some of those completions that all three Quarterback’s had would not have come about if the defense could have tackle the Quarterback. Murray was 7-17 and at least two or three of the 7 completions would have never happened in a real game. Meaning Murray was really as low as 4 for 17 and that is NOT GOOD.

Everybody knows that Murray will be the starting Quarterback as it should be but nobody know just how good or bad Mason and LeMay really are because CMR and Bobo will not let them play when the outcome is not rigged in some way. Yesterday I didn’t want to see Murray shine against the 2nd, 3rd or 4th team because that information is worthless, we know he will do okay as long as their is no pressure. We have watched him for 2 years.
What we don’t know is actually how good is Mason and LeMay. If they had played against the first team defense yesterday and did better than Murray did like completed 60 or 70% of their passes if nothing else it would at least say they deserve to get on the field. It’s like Bobo and Mark Richt doesn’t want to know the answer as to how good or bad are the other two Quarterback’s when under a lot of pressure. All we know is how bad Murray is under pressure and that’s when it counts. I still say that if the defense could tackle yesterday Murray would have completed only 4 no more than 5 passes.

When LeMay took the team down and scored to make it 17-17 , the touch he showed throwing to the running back was something you will never see Murray do. That ability takes a ton of patience which I have not seen Murray demonstrate, ever.

Most of the first highlights were about the defense, running back and Murray zipping it down field for no least than 15 yards. I am talking about touch . Go back to the G- Game and watch the two throws that LeMay made to Karempelis. Those were perfect touch throws. In two years if the stat was available I bet that Murray has no more than a 25 % completion rate on screens or little dump passes and most of the ones that are amazingly completed the intended receiver has to lunge for it or catch is one handed with an acrobatic maneuver.

That’s not the point at all . Right now we know Murray is the starter but he has not been able to play under pressure against a good team for 60 minutes, yet. If he starts that again I would like to know if LeMay or Mason has the ability to come in and do better but we will never know if they are not ever given the chance against the first team defense and we didn’t need to see what Murray could do in the G-Game against the first team defense we needed to know what LeMay and Mason could do. Unless I saw a different game than you did Murray would have been saked or the pass would have been disrupted a few time where Murray got a completion. That’s not very good when you know that Murray only had 4 or 5 completions out of 17 and because the play was allowed to continue he got half his yardage that would have never been if it was a real game.
I don’t care what LeMay and Mason did against the 2nd and 3rd team . That is about as useful as Murray’s stat yesterday. The stats that would have mattered is how good Mason and LeMay would have done against the first team defense.

That’s just not true bucket. We just want the QB position to be open and fair. Personally I don’t think that it is and neither do a lot of other dawg fans. Sure Murray can move the ball up and down the field fairly effective, but if you have been watching the same games that I’ve been watching, then you can also see him fall completely apart for no apparent reason and if any pressure what so ever is put on him, then forget it. Except for the Missouri game the first 5 games are relatively easy. Why not give Hudson and LeMay a shot sometime during the game with the first unit, Won’t happen. If the dawgs have a big lead going into the forth quarter, Richt will simply send in the second unit and have them run the ball up the middle on every play.

What scares me about Richt is he’s setting up Hutson to start after Murray is gone, even if there is a better QB on campus. Richt has this thing about “serve your time and you’ll get your time” rather than put the best player on the field. Just like any player in the backfield, RB or QB, if they have time to do their thing, they will look good. The OL this year will be more athletic and faster and that will help a lot, and give Murray and the RB’s a chance to do their thing. Murray has the skills, and the only thing he is guilty of, is trying to do too much some times and make up for the short comings of other personnel. He will shine again this year, but folks that only want to point out the negative, which is the great majority of folks on these blogs, will still harp about anything negative they can find about Murray, and ignore the 95% of the time, this kid plays the game. He plays with heart, and has good physical tools and can get UGA to the next level. He can’t run for the RB’s, he can’t block for his own passes, and he can’t insure that the receivers do not drop wide open passes. It is a team sport folks, and if you understand the concept, you will realize that he is a team player and a leader on the field. Everybody has got to do their job, or as usual, they guy at the top get’s blamed for it.

Aaron Murray is obviously a terrible QB, despite the fact that every analyst and SEC coach disagrees. Richt clearly only plays him because of some satanic bargain. Murray will not be drafted into the NFL, he has no talent, there are at least 15 better QB options on the roster. People are only short-listing him for Heisman because of the Illuminati. Those who are looking at the stats need to keep in mind that Murray and Mason were throwing to some players who will not earn much playing time this fall… you also have to take into account the dropped passes. That helps explain the bad accuracy.

Murray was just a sophomore last season, so cut him some slack! When he actually had good pass protection and when the running game was working, he was lights out (Auburn, Georgia Tech, etc.) He’s no Cam Newton or Tebow, but he is a really good qb when the running game and line actually give him some help.

Malcome started coming along toward the end of the season and if nothing else, could be a solid short-yardage option when our other guys need a breather. Crowell and Marshall could be a solid duo, but Malcome and maybe Samuel could be valuable for us to take pressure off Murray.

Murray is not the problem; his protection (or lack of it) is. We have difficulty run-blocking at all, and our pass blocking tends to break down badly in the second half (against the good teams, not the patsies.) I do believe that Friend will bring them along, but in the SEC you have to have a good o-line; average won’t get you there. Yes, we won the East in a down year and we have improved in some areas. I will stick w/my dawgs through thick and thin, but I hope our line sees the light this year, as well as our recruiters. There are certain areas you can afford not to be as strong as otheres. An average or decent running back behind a great line will do well. A great back behind a sub-par line will not. A QB who has to rush plays due to breakdowns in blocking (or getting overpowered, for that matter) will certainly come under scrutiny. Yeah, I’ve harped on it and hopefully it will improve. However I seriously hope we will put a concerted effort into our o-line recruiting ad bring in the real hosses. Until we do, we’ll be about where we are now. good, above average, but not on top with the big boys.

With regards to OL remeber that we had 4 year starter in Ben Jones and Sturdivent expected to start but kept gettings himself hurt. Nobody wants to signing up to play and then knows they stuck on bench behinds that talent. That why we now getting new OL recruits now that Jones and Sturds moved on to big leagues. But we just reloading it this year and just needs some experience. Once we get that were goning to be rolling to Dome with power runs game and Top Dawg passing stats.

It is obvious you know less about football than my basset hound does. Look up the phrase team sport, and you will realize you are the moron amongst us, not the other way around. Why do you think a lot of these great college QB’s go to teams missing a lot pf parts or at least a few vital parts and end up getting beat up, or have poor statistics in the NFL? It is a team sport.
Murray is at the point where he shows the leadership on the field, to get something done when something is able to be done. If the OL, can open up some holes for the runners and protect, the passing lane for more than 3 seconds, Murray will do a great job. He has the experience and a key part of what makes a successful QB, is the ability to lead. Mason, may be able to throw the ball a few yards longer and maybe with a little more velocity, as might LeMay, but you have to be a general out there, not just an athlete and those two are still learning that process. UGA will put the best man for the job out there at the key position of QB. If everybody else does the job they are supposed to do, Murray will get his job done well, and UGA will win.
It is really a simple process, even for one so sophisticated as you to understand. Before you start calling people morons and stupid, I suggest you take a good look in the mirror and examine, exactly it is that makes you think you are so smart, when you can’t even understand team concept or the game of football.

The play of the day for the G day game was Lemay throwing the ball into the end zone and the ref. telling him after the play, SON, do you know you would have given the ball to the other team if you did that in a real game. What was he thinking? How many times did he go the wrong way? I know of twice he came out from center the wrong way. I heard he was having a very hard time picking up the offense and it looks like.
