Defensive-minded Black Team favored over Red as G-Day rosters revealed

ATHENS – Georgia finally released its rosters for the G-Day Game late Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Basically the Black Team is the defensive team and the Red Team is the offensive team. The No. 1 units for those respective sides of the ball are represented and they’re stacked even deeper at certain positions. Accordingly, expect the Black, with two All-Americans and 10 returning starters, to be favored to win.
  • Quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Hutson Mason are both on the Red team, as well as tailbacks Isaiah Crowell and Ken Malcome and every standout wide receiver. The starting offensive line, as cited by position coach Will Friend earlier this week, is wearing red — LT Kenarious Gates, LG Dallas Lee, C David Andrews, RG Chris Burnette, RT Kolton Houston.
  • The Black team features the entire starting defense and includes newly minted cornerback Malcolm Mitchell. However, Mitchell is expected to have to sit out due to a recent hamstring pull.
  • Noseguard Kwame Geathers ended up on the Red team along with defensive end Garrison Smith, an indication they finished the spring behind John Jenkins and Cornelius Washington, respectively.
  • Mike Gilliard is at middle linebacker with the Black squad while Christian Robinson is with the Red. Jarvis Jones and Chase Vasser are the Black team OLBs.
  • True freshman tailback Keith Marshall is listed with the Black but is doubtful due to a hamstring injury. If he doesn’t go, every other back on that offense originally walked on at UGA. The Red team’s Richard Samuel (concussion) also is not expected to play.
  • There are only six defensive backs on the Black squad and one of those is strong safety Shawn Williams, who is expected to miss with a minor knee injury. With no other safety listed on the roster, don’t be surprised if Sanders Commings plays safety and Damian Swann starts at corner. Williams’ backup Corey Moore is with the Red team.
  • There are 50 players on the Red roster and 53 on the Black. But cornerback Devin Bowman is listed on both rosters and there is expected to be much switching back and forth, especially at positions at which the hierarchy hasn’t been firmly set.
  • There are no celebrity coaches or any other gimmicks surrounding this year’s game. Remember to bring at least one canned good for admission and the 3 p.m. game is scheduled to be televised on tape delay by CSS at 5 p.m. on Saturday. . . .

I think the 2 biggest questions this Saturday will be:
How many picks will our ALL SEC QB toss and
How many times will IC tap the helmet to come out.

The OL is still a unit in the making, so the defense will and should be greatly favored. It has got to be tough, scrimmaging against a DL like UGA has, when you are just starting for the first year, so it will be a showcase for the defense. If the OL can open a few holes, we might see Crowell put on a few good runs, most of the offense will come from passing mostly.

REALLY???? Murray had a Good year????? his turnovers and poor decision making were a direct result of 2 losses, and factored in a large part to another one. We were one Murray pick away from losing to a couple of other teams……unfortunately, I use to be just as optimistic as you are, but I have grown sick of winning the pre-season national championship and seeing what happens in the fall. Until this team proves otherwise, I have no expectations….

If Murray has his good year next year- 9-3

If Murray has a bad year- 7-5

We have so many pasties on this years schedule, even with Murray playing bad (and we know CMR will leave him in) we should be able to win 6 or 7 in spite of Murray and Bobo

The loss to Mich State still burns….what a disgrace!!! That loss, along with all the off the field issues will cost us (1) game period! Murray will cost us minimum (2) games guarenteed! Plus, its our year to lose to FLA again (a splash of Murray on this one too). Looks a whole lot like 8-4 boys. Face it, the Murray – Bobo combo can’t win big games! Just being realistic guys….sorry.

Murray will cost us at least two very important games next season. I predict it will be at SC and the sec championship game. Murray had showed for the last wo season that he is very shaky, nervous passer when the game is on the line. Last year we won the FL game inspite of Murray. Note Play Lemay and let get ready for the future. Go Dawgs!

I don’t like Geathers and Jenkins on different teams. They ought to rotate in Geathers and Jenkins non-stop until our O-line proves it has grown a pair. That is what they will be facing against the best teams in the SEC. It won’t happen though. If the D-line is blowing up our O-line too much Bobo won’t get to run any of his cutsie plays. Plus, we don’t want anyone to get any boo boos.

The offense is soft. Bobo will pull out some smoke and mirror plays on the opening drive that make them look real good, but then they’ll get stuffed in the red zone. Watch and see.

Thanks.

Kyle ol pal, you know everything. In fact, you can guarantee that if Hutson Mason were in the game in the situations where AM coughed it up that the turnover would not have happened. May I borrow your crystal ball when you aren’t using it?

Hutson Mason was extremely lucky to have been given a scholly. Call me a moron all you want, but I think I am going to go with the opinion of the guy who has coached two Heisman winning QBs when it comes to evaluating talent. But clearly, you are the expert, Kyle. What is it you do for a living? Still a school boy perhaps?

Which team is QB Eric Murray on? They usually lose against good defenses. I’d be willing to guess the Black team will win, just a lot more poise and big game playmakers on that side of the ball.

Who should have a big day on Black team offense?
Karempelis, Harton, Rome, McGowan, Bradberry, Lemay, Bingham, and Smith.

Black team defense?
Jenkins (should dominate the inexperienced line), Rambo/Commings (should intercept 3 from interception machine QB Eric Murray), Jarvis Jones (at least 3 sacks of lead footed QB Eric Murray)

Who should have a big day on Red Team offense?
Hutson Mason (if he gets enough reps), King, Lynch (Mason loves to use his tight ends), Bennett (might get player of game if Black team doubles King), Crowell, Malcome

Red Team defense?
Ogletree, Ray Drew, Herrara, Geathers

Its real easy to point the finger at Murray but those who know anything whatsoever about football know that the problems on offense start with the offensive line. Murray has absolutely ZERO support in the running game in big games. I don’t care if we’ve got freaking Joe Montana in his prime behind center. It won’t make a bit of damn difference if we can not move the ball on the ground in big games. That is what wins big games in the SEC, not the quarterback.

Its absolutely laughable to blame Murray for turnovers where he was running for his life because our underperforminig O-line was getting its tail whipped. Simply laughable. Murray is the toughest player we have on our entire offense. He gives it 110% every game. He can’t do it all himself. The other 10 guys need to pick up the slack.

Thanks.

You think Lemay could go up there and win that game?

I don’t. I think we would be screwed.

Lemay can’t even get ahead of one of the walkons on the depth chart.

Don’t waste a defender on the outlet receiver when QB Eric Murray is in, Murray doesn’t throw to outlets, has a hard time finding tight ends in traffic, so double King his primary, and Murray will fold. Murray has only thrown 1 td all Spring, so no worries about him.

Tavarres King is money in big games, so Grantham better blanket him.

@ dawgfan — Your 9:16 a.m. post is spot on.

I was just as frustrated as any true Dawg fan was when AM turned it over last year, some at the most inopportune times. However, to suggest that Mason would have been able to hang onto the ball when Ingram or Clowney had the Red Sea parted in front of them on their way behind the line of scrimmage is absolutely laughable. Murray needs to do a better job protecting the football, I get it. But I don’t think the coaches are playing “favorites” as everyone likes to claim when it comes down to who the starter is. CMR’s job was on the line last year. $3 mil a year. You don’t think he wants the best, most capable guy for the job out there??

“If Murray has a good year next year……”

Murray has yet to have a good GAME in 2 years against teams that finish top 25, much less a good season. Murray is 0-9 lifetime against those teams. He’s not going to suddenly develop poise and leadership. Old habits are hard to break.

Richt’s judgment at QB hasn’t been good for years. He started Tereshinski over future #1 NFL draft pick Stafford, remember? And went with Joe Cox over Logan Gray, and now Murray over Mason and Lemay. It’s been years since we’ve won a big game against a great defense.

Hey dawgfan, I seem to remember Murray standing flat-footed with plenty of running room out of the pocket when he threw not 1 but 2 ints against the ultimate puss Mich State! Thats the point bro, the QB is expected to make plays! At some point, Murray has to make a play against a top tier team. The stats don’t lie…never beat a top 25 team…never won a big game…had PLENTY of opportunity! No one is blaming Murray for Bobos poor play calling, but here again dude make a play when things are tough. I bet Jarvis, Jon, Rambo, and the rest of the DAWG D really appreciate a perspective like yours…the QB only makes plays because the D sucks and there is no pressure? Yeah right!!

Of his 16 wins, 12 (75%) were against losing teams, 4 (25%) against winning teams.
Of Murray’s 11 games against ranked teams, he lost 9 (82%), won 2 (18%)
Of Murray’s 9 games against teams that finished in top 25, he lost 9 (100%), won 0 (0%).

Good thing Richt entitles Murray to keep starting, because he sure hasn’t earned it with his 0%-18% win % against good teams.

With the injuries at tailback, let Richt and Bobo split time back there. Run them out of a single back set, then, after both are removed on stretchers, they’ll begin the process of recruiting legitimate SEC caliber offensive lineman. After Bobo gets out of the hospital, his first call will be to Shamire Devine at Tri-Cities, don’t cha think?

Disagree about Thomas. Thomas made a wise move, Ealey rushed for 1100 yards and averaged over 6 ypc after he left Georgia. Maybe Thomas will do the same once he becomes the premeire featured back, which as the #1 yards per carry rb, Thomas earned, but did not get reps over favorite Crowell.

thomas probably called Mettenberger before he decided to transfer. Mettenberger probably told him how things worked out, since Mett went 11-1 as a starter the year after he left Georgia, and led his team all the way to the National Championship, and Mett ended up having the 2 best coaches in the nation, Saban & Miles, both offer him scholarships. Worked out ok, Thomas, as UGA’s leading yards per carry rusher, will be fine where he goes and win a lot of games or have a much better statistical year like Mett and Ealey did.

Guess it’s pretty obvious who Rickdawg is! For the record, it is pretty pathetic to change your screen name multiple times in an effort to disguise your “UGA Obsession Syndrome”! Also, for the last time, Zach did not wake up and decide to transfer because of preferential treatment from Richt toward Murray. As the following article from espn.com begins, “Georgia has one fewer contender for its starting quarterback job after coach Mark Richt announced Sunday that touted redshirt freshman Zach Mettenberger was kicked off the team for violating team rules.” Those are the facts and suggesting otherwise is disingenuous at best and downright dishonest at the worst. I wish Zach success unless he competes against the Dawgs, but Zach has no one to blame for what happened to him but himself.

I know 80% of UGA fans are ok with having a winning season, and getting to a Bowl game. I am one fo the 20% who arn’t happy with that. I would say to those 80% UGA fans who are bringing UGA down by accepting such low standards, expect more. Richt has had top 10 talent for 10 years, and is the only coach in the nation to finish top 10 in recruiting and not win a National Championship. It’s not been a talent problem, it’s been the culture of entitlement, and fans accepting less than excellent out of Mark Richt.

To who much is given, much is expected. As a Christian man, Mark Richt SHOULD live that principle.

Just take into consideration that most are single digit IQ’s and couldn’t spell CAT if you spotted them the CA.

What makes it even sweeter is that fortunately they have zero influence in who coaches, plays or is recruited. CMR will be around for a long time and even some of the idiots realize that CMR will always try to put a team on the field that gives UGA the best chance of winning because it aids in job security. Also no Bobby Petrino-like activities from CMR.

Why hasn’t Mark Richt won a National Championship, when 100% of the other programs that averaged top 5 in recruiting for the decade (USC, LSU, Alabama, Texas), won a National Championship?

Why is Mark Richt the ONLY Coach to come short, given SO much TALENT and RESOURCES?

Aaron Murray broke our school TD record for a season by NINE TDs last year. I agree that he needs to do a better job taking care of the ball, but you guys who expect us to have a Tom Brady like year under center every year need to look around, watch the QB play most other teams deal with every season, and be thankful. Watch the bowl games at the end of the season so that you can get a feel for the entire nation’s QB play. It is terrible.
The only team who you could make a case is better off than us at QB is Arkansas (and that is debatable), but Wilson won’t have Petrino drawing up his plays for him any more so we’ll see how he does.

bsg3003

why is our fanbase so divided about who starts at QB? It should be a simple choice of who starts. It should be the guy that’s already played two years of SEC football. It should be the guy that took devastating hits from animals like Jadeveon Clowney and Nick Fairley. It should be the guy that completely obliterated Stafford’s TD numbers. It should be the guy that shattered the Single-Season Touchdown record in only HIS SECOND YEAR.

Fellow Dawg fans you should be ashamed of yourselves, Mason is untested, and has only faced a defense that he has been practicing against for the last 3 years. Do you really want to throw Mason into the fire when we have maybe the best chance of going to the NC in decades? (easy schedule + more seniority = better than 2008) You want to risk a guy going up against Jadeveon Clowney for the first time? Just think of what you are asking for.

How much better can Mason be anyways? throw 10 pics instead of 14? 40 TD’s instead of 35? In Mason’s first year? yeah right, keep dreaming.

His TD’s would be significantly lower, perhaps in the 24-27 range and (that’s pushing it.) I’m guessing his INT’s would be something in the 7-10 range, but i’m not sure, because I haven’t seen him face anyone! and neither have anyone else except his own coaches, who obviously think he’s not as talented or seasoned as Murray, because he’s not starting!!! Jeez people get with the program, and even if Mason shows out and passes for 300 yards and 3 TDs during G-Day it won’t matter because he would be doing it against the second team, on a SCRIMMAGE.

Why did Alabama win the national championship last year? LSU’s quarterback was not that good at times and Alabama’s Quarterback didn’t make very many mistakes. Alabama didn’t beat themselves.
Aaron Murray has got to get it in his head that he doesn’t have to MAKE something happen all the time. Two great teams should be low scoring as the Alabama and LSU game was last year. The key is who will make the most mistakes at critical times and lose the game for their team . Most of the time it’s not that we won the game as much as that we lost the game because of too many mistakes.
The reason Georgia got blown out in the LSU game was because of Murray turning the ball over just before half time making the game a very close 10 to 7 when if not for of a few dropped passes and that turnover just before half Georgia could have gone in at half winning 17-0 at worst. It could have been as much as 24-0.
All Murray need to have learned from last year is sometimes it is better to just make sure you: DO NOT HURT THE TEAM . LET OUR DEFENSE WIN THE GAME SOMETIMES AS ALABAMA DID AGAINST LSU.This is not Murray’s strong point, to be patient but if he has matured and really learned something from last year he will need to be patient and let the progression of the game dictate what is the best way to go in winning the game.

7576 Dawg, You forgot that Murray threw two perfect passes to two receivers in the SECCG that easily puts Georgia up by 24-0 at half. It wasn’t his fault, LSU JUST HAD TO MANY BACKS to contend with. The Defense wore down and that’s why Mark Richt recruited heavily at running back this year.

If UGA’s new strategy is to try to mimic LSU’s offense from last year then they will be worse on offense in the future. LSU wasn’t very good in any offensive category.

I agree with you on LeMay. Richt needs to play him and see what he can do. In the G-game last year the favorite Black team, that Murray couldn’t move late in the game , scored with a minute or two left because LeMay took over and lead them all the way down the field to score and win 18-11. We will never know what LeMay can do under pressure until Richt gives him a chance and as much as everybody wants Mason, I would rather give LeMay the back up job and let Mason red shirt like they are talking about doing. The G-game will answer some of those questions.

I’ll take Murray at this point. He’s on the brink of breaking through and he has improved drastically each season. If the Oline gets on the same page during the summer/fall, UGA is poised in every position except placekicker and punter. Starting two freshmen at those positions will hurt us at least once this year. The defense is going to be nasty. Tons of playmakers, lots of depth on the line and in the backers. The 1’s and 2’s look solid at DB. I’d say 13-1 this season with a BCS Bowl victory is imminent.

Lemay is 4th in the rotation right now, not close to starting or back up. How much better would Mason be than Murray? Well, considering Mason has never been sacked or picked off in a game yet, that’s 2 areas for starters. He’d probably reduce the number of bad plays at QB from 30+ sacks with Murray to under 10, just can’t sack him, he has a fast release like Peyton Manning. Interceptions would drop from 14 per season with Murray, to a normal (AJ McCarron/Shaw) 6 or 7 with Mason per year. Td’s would likely go up, Mason threw 7 td;s in high school in 1 game. Wins would probably increase from 10 per year with Murray maximum due to making less sacks and interceptions, but throwing as many td’s, to 12-14 wins per season with Mason.
