Practice update: Keith Marshall, Richard Samuel, Shawn Williams likely out for G-Day

ATHENS – Georgia fans have lost one of their best reasons to come to the G-Day Game next Saturday.

Keith Marshall, the highly-touted tailback out of Raleigh, has been effectively scratched from the lineup due to a hamstring injury suffered a week ago. The 5-foot-11, 202-pound midyear enrollee was unable to practice again Saturday as the Bulldogs conducted their second scrimmage of spring practice. Coach Mark Richt said the window is almost shut on him being able to play in the annual spring game.

“I would say the chance of Keith going is probably not very good,” Richt said. “Right at this minute I’d say he’s doubtful.”

That’s a shame because all spring reports on Marshall had been very positive.

“You can tell why he was the No. 1 running back in the country,” senior receiver Tavarres King said. “That kid is impressive.”

Said running backs coach Bryan McClendon: “Just a super guy, just very conscientious. He’s smart. He’s a sharp kid who wants to to do well at everything. Obviously he has all the ability to match it. When you say the sky’s the limit for a person, I really think that phrase it made for him.”

It looks doubtful for senior tailback Richard Samuel (concussion) as well. That leaves Isaiah Crowell, Ken Malcome, Brandon Harton and Kyle Karempelis to tote the rock for G-Day.

Williams suffers knee injury

As if Georgia’s secondary situation was not precarious enough, senior strong safety Shawn Williams went down with a knee injury on Saturday.

Williams is the only one of Georgia’s four starting defensive backs that is not suspended for games at the beginning of the season. Free safety Bacarri Rambo (four games), cornerback Sanders Commings (two games) and cornerback Branden Smith (one game) all are expected to miss playing time as a result of internal discipline for team rules violations.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, Richt does not believe Williams’ injury is serious.

“We think it’s a non-op situation,” Richt said Saturday morning. “He’s in there doing fine right now. I don’t know [about the spring game].”

Passing game tuning up

There was some rare good news for Georgia on the offensive side of the ball from Saturday’s scrimmage. For the first time all spring, the offense was able to effectively move the football against the Bulldogs’ stingy defense.

Quarterbacks Aaron Murray (8-for-13 for 125 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs) and Hutson Mason (12-19-151-2-2) each was able to pass for more than 100 yards and four different receivers were able to haul in touchdown catches. Senior split end Marlon Brown led the way with 5 catches for 90 yards and a TD redshirt freshman Justin Scott-Wesley also had 5 receptions and a score.

“We threw it and caught it a lot better,” Richt said. “It started out not very good at all but as the scrimmage went on more plays were made at quarterback. You’re trying to make a judgment on whether a play might have been a sack or not and we err on the side of letting the ball get thrown. So there was probably a few of those big plays that might’ve been sacks in a real game.”

Corey Moore shines

On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore safety Corey Moore had a big day for the Bulldogs. The Griffin High graduate had a team-best  9 tackles and also had an interception.

He did good,” Richt said. “He’s coming. He’s a very aggressive football player when it comes to coming up to make a tackle. He’s a good athlete. He’s learning a lot and he’s going to get better. And he’s going to have to play for us; he’s going to have to function for us.”

Other defensive standouts included linebacker Ramik Wilson (7 tackles, sack, pass break-up), defensive end Ray Drew (5 tackles, sack), linebacker Chase Vasser (6 tackles) and noseguard Kwame Geathers (2 sacks).

The Bulldogs continue to struggle running the football against stout defensive front. Ken Malcome led all rushers with 29 yards on 5 carries, Isaiah Crowell had six for 23 and Brandon Harton had 6 for 11.

That’s the bad news. The good news is Richt said Georgia’s defensive line, led by John Jenkins, Abry Jones and Geathers, could be one of the best around.

Etc. . . .

Offensive guard Dallas Lee was back practicing after being sidelined for the last week with a concussion. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Zach DeBell (ankle) was practicing in a regular jersey for  the first time in a long while and redshirt freshman Xzavier Ward (knee) was working on the side in full pads and a green (non-contact) jersey. . . . Linebacker Amarlo Herrera (shoulder) remains in a green jersey.

Following are the “very unofficial official stats,” as Richt called them, from Saturday’s long scrimmage:

Sorry, I concern myself with what I know. I know for a fact that murray is one of the best QBs that the university of georgia has ever had, he’s broken records for touchdowns and yardage last year, the wins will come just you wait my friend. What do we know about lemay? What do we know about Mason for that matter? They’ve never gone up against sec competition. They’re both unproven QBs. I’d target go with the guy that’s one of the best QBs in the conference

My, who in the world would want a QB with an 0-9 record vs. teams that finish top 25 to continue to start, a South Carolina fan, maybe Florida fan, perhaps? UGA fans want to win, 0-9 is not the kind of QB any UGA fans want.

Hutson Mason gives UGA the best chance to beat a ranked team. Again, it’s impossible to be worse than 0-9.

what we know, is Murray has never beat a team that finished top 25. 0-9.

woulda, coulda, shoulda, never did a guten-damen thing. Murray is All-SEC this year and the trolls know it, and don’t want to see him play. He is and will be UGAs starter unless he implodes, so get over your A.M. hate…

Doc and tide pole say the same unoriginal drivel everytime they open their mouths. Has nothing to do with logic, just half-truths and disinformation. Heres a question to both of you that I doubt you will answer. Since you seem to dislike everything Dawgs, why are you so concerned about what the Dogs do? The answer is excatly why both of you were, are and always will be useless trolls on these blogs. If you don’t like it leave it. We know you both have a miserible life because it shows in your constant whining. It’s really pitiful but nobody cares what you think anyway…

connor norman was the kid who if i remember right was very impressive last gday but was ignored during the year. Same story. The kid probably doesnt run a 4.4 sec 40 and you dont want to take valuable playing time from criminals that are trying to get to the NFL asap. Cmr, just keep yapping about the “georgia way” and then continue to ignore those that embody it

Actually there is a good article by kinberly nash “the lady sportswriter” about connor and i stand corrected. According to the article, he runs a 4.39 40 dash. The article details about how connor has superior physical ability to many of the corners who were coming out of hs but was virtually ignored and had to go to presbyterian. This happens all the time to white running backs. Apparently, the criteria for selecting football players is having DISPARATE IMPACT on whites. I wonder where the justice dept investigation is

Strong support for Murray. I’m a bit surprised. He’s short, plays well against weak opponents but makes critical mistakes in big games when the pressure comes. It’s a trend, not an aberration. If you didn’t notice that’s ok. Those that have? I guess we’re all trolls. It’s too funny a word to be a serious put down. Even the word “twit’ would have more impact.

dnt let the fact that mason threw 3 td’s on a 2nd string defense fool you. Murray, 1 TD or not, had 35 tds last year to 14 ints which about 6 of them were just good plays by opposing defenses. Mason, talented, but i am sure a coach like CMR would’ve had him starting over murray if it were just about spring stats. these are some situational passes, not like a real game. so keep trolling and writing your mess becuz murray is a pre-season heisman hopeful.

losing a game takes more than 1 QB. murray isn’t 0-9 vs ranked opponets, uga is. but they beat a 23rd ranked Auburn last year, and no one knew Florida was going to succ the last 5 -6 games of the season. Special teams and and other things go into losing a game. so like my boy before me said, get out of the basement, off the computer, stop watching cinemax, and get a life, instead of worrying about college kids, myself being a college student

Is Chris Conley hurt?

Any update on Mitchell at CB/DB from this last scrimmage?

I haven’t see any stats from him in the last 2 scrimmages.

I like to keep up with what the Metro Atl. Area players are doing, especially the ones that also had offers from GT and had the Academics for GT.

Good to Scott-Wesley play well again, that RS yr seemed to help him out a lot.

CPJ tried to Recruit him to GT with a spiel that went something like this:

“If you sign with GT to play A-Back I promise to throw the ball more after you sign”

Scott-Wesley’s reply:

“It looks to me that position is more like RB than it is WR, I think I’ll look elsewhere”

Well, here’s to hoping that BOTH TEAMS are 11-0 when the last Saturday in November rolls around this year.

Murray is the stater, has always been the stater and has the regular season games to prove he’s deserving of being the starter. With that said he’s only a hit from being out for the season. Two quarterbacks will be needed so Hutson Mason’s progress should be a point of jubilation and not controversy. Not many players don’t want to start and if Mason believes starting at Georgia isn’t possible then he has too make the decision to stay or leave. Players do it all the time when they evaluate their playing status in their program. DJ Shockely had to make a similar decision.

As long as there are 21 other players plus kickers and special teams involved in Football….Murray did not lose all those games to top teams by himself….There is this thing called team that you Murray bashers are forgetting….Get over it you may as well blame it on the center…. Jones had the same record since Murray has been the starter…

DrFutBol failed his ID 10T test. Mason is being redshirted this year so that if Murray leaves earily we will have two years for Mason to quarterback at UGA. If some of these ID 10T failures on here are such good coaches why aren’t they the ones making two to three million dollars a year, Arkansas will be looking for one soon?

Just FYI everyone crying about how much playing time Hutson’s getting……he’s redshirting this season to allow Murray to get out of his way so you need to get behing Murray and accept him! The guy didn’t get 50+ scholarship offers for nothing. Murray will have his best year this season! And HM will start when AM leaves for the NFL.

The lack of any ability to run the ball against a good defense is troubling (again). This can be attributed to poor OL play (again). This offense does not work without a running threat.

I never “bash” Murray, in fact I like his toughness, and apparently Mason can’t beat him out of the top spot.

But it’s just denying the truth not to admit he hasn’t played well in big games in his first two seasons and is 0-2 in his two bowl games, both in which UGA was the favorite.

While Murray certainly is not the only reason for this, he has made a bunch of turnovers in those games, many for TDs for the opponent.

I think Bobo/Richt don’t trust Murray completely and that’s why they go conservative when we get a lead – even a small one. Maybe he cleans up that stuff this season, and Bobo opens up the offense more.

UGADawg91

April 8th, 2012
9:01 am

Why does everyone assume Mason will start once Murray leaves. By redshirting, that puts a year between him and Murray. But now he’s in the same class as LeMay. It’s possible that Mason may not ever be a starter at UGA even after taking a redshirt year.

Black Mountain NC Bulldog

April 8th, 2012

Murray will start and if Bobo and Richt allow him to roll outside the pocket. He will do great. Murray does need to cut down, on his turnovers next season. Mason is a great option if Murray goes down!!
The D front 7 will carry us until we get players back from suspension and the O line grows, gets tougher, and jells.
I am optimistic, for the 2012 season!
