ATHENS – Georgia is in the midst of a major rebuilding effort on the offensive line with only two returning starters. But there is at least one relative newbie who is showing a lot of promise.
Kolton Houston, a sophomore from Buford, had to sit out this past season because of an “NCAA eligibility issue.” That issue is expected to be resolved before next fall and there are strong indications the 6-foot-5, 291-pounder will be among Georgia’s starting five for the season opener.
“We’re expecting Kolton to be a good player for us this year,” offensive line coach Will Friend said. “He’s a good athlete, he’s got good strength, he can run well. He’s probably the best athlete of the guards that we’ve got, to be honest with you. If he can continue to get tougher and continue to improve, he’s going to be a good player for us.”
Interview requests for Houston continue to be denied. But his teammates on the line don’t mind talking him up.
“Kolton Houston, I’ve always been high on him,” said junior guard Chris Burnette, the returning starter at right guard. “I feel like he really could have helped us out a lot last year if it wasn’t for that ineligibility stuff with him. I’ve been very impressed how he’s played.”
By all accounts, Kenarious Gates has been dominant and unchallenged in his move to left tackle from left guard. But Burnette had high praise for the other new names on the No. 1 line – center David Andrews and right tackle Austin Long. Andrews (6-2, 280) is a sophomore from Norcross and Long ((6-5, 304) is a redshirt sophomore from Memphis.
“I’ve been really impressed with the first line in general,” said Burnette, who has been designated spokesman among the linemen. “David Andrews has learned the offense probably faster than anybody I’ve seen as far as knowing what defenses are going to do, their tendencies and stuff like that. Austin, since high school I knew he was going to be a great player. He’s starting to get better after having to deal with injuries and sicknesses and stuff like that is real encouraging.”
Bailey to player D-end
The conversion of outside linebackers to defensive ends apparently was not limited to Cornelius Washington and Ray Drew. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on Thursday said that redshirt freshman Sterling Bailey is also going play at that down-lineman position this coming fall.
Bailey (6-foot-3, 270 pounds), from East Hall, remains sidelined while recovering from off-season football surgery. But when he takes the practice field in August it will be with defensive line coach Rodney Garner’s group.
“Sterling is a guy who has really grown since he’s been here,” defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. “He has very good flexibility and initial quickness. He’s got some size to him and he’s going to continue to get bigger as he lifts and eats. He’s going to be a pretty big man one day and he’s got pretty good athletic ability. Those kinds of guys create mismatches inside. That’s what you’re trying to do is create mismatches so guys can win one-on-one battles.”
Grantham said Washington will work at both outside linebacker and end in the fall.
Garrison Smith, Swann draw praise
Asked to identify some players that have helped themselves this spring, Grantham tabbed a pair of Atlantans — defensive end Garrison Smith and cornerback Damian Swann.
Said Grantham of Smith, a 6-foot-3, 294-pound junior out of Douglass: “Garrison knows what everybody does. He’s a very smart guy, he can get guys lined up and he plays with energy and brings energy to the defense. He did that last year. He’s plays in all of our packages and he can play on all three downs. I’ve been pleased and proud with what he’s done.”
Of Swann, the 5-11, 177-pound sophomore out of Grady: “Damian Swann is a really good player that continues to improve every day. He’s basically a second-year guy, but you see a lot of productivity out of him and I think he can be an outstanding player.
Etc. . . .
Signees John Atkins and John Theus watched the Bulldogs practice on Thursday. . . . Safety Bacarri Rambo and cornerback Sanders Commings didn’t practice because “they’re banged up,” according to Grantham. . . . Wide receiver Rantavious Wooten (leg muscle) had to leave practice again. . . . The Bulldogs will hold their second scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Woodruff Practice Fields.

I like what I hear in terms of the guys supporting each other. Often the best “gems” are the unexpected ones you find by surprise. If this OL could gel and surprise us, even this skeptical Dawg would say it could be a good season. I would like to see some other QB’s get some “significant” game experience, however Richt apparently doesn’t think that’s important.

Regarding the comments about our OL being “undersized”? Wrong. Last year we had the biggest OL in the country and a bigger one than 2/3 of NFL teams (look it up). It made us slow and we couldn’t open holes. Look at the lines that really run the ball in the SEC. Yeah they’re big – about as big as our line will be this year – but also quick footed and atheletic. We need a spring at the snap – and with our pro style offense, slightly less weight will do us some good. Go look at Richts top 3 rushing teams since he’s been at UGA. Look at the weight of the OL. Right on par with what we have now.

I know this is off topic but the AJC didn’t provide anywhere so you could vent about what is going on with Petrino at Arkansas.
Jessica Dorrell got an assistant coordinator job and she was just on the volleyball team. If Arkansas doesn’t fire this little gold digger along with Petrino I hope that the SEC will get involved and demand something be done. It is a disgrace as long as Petrino remain a coach in the SEC. We already knew he did not have any integrity because of the way he left Atlanta but for a grown man that is suppose to be a roll model to his players to get caught and lie about his involvement with Dorrell in an attempt to cover it up is a reflection on the SEC and I will be very disappointed if he remains coach at Arkansas.

Yes Joey, it IS our business. We, here in Georgia, have some history, and still alot of anger towards this royal POS. Granted he is a skilled coach–doesn’t change his character–and his character is why we cannot stand the SOB. Everyone on the Falcons hated his arse for the disrespectful and denegrating way he treated them. Every Falcons fan hates him for the way he slithered out of town before the end of the season.
Having seen the pictures, I understand why he would want her, but I am at a loss as to why she would want to be with his old skanky-looking self. Must have some serious daddy issues.
He stated that he lied about her being with him to protect his family. BS BS BS, if he wanted to protect his wife and four children he would not be cheating in the first place. This is just another example of Bobby caring about Bobby ONLY and to heck with everyone else. Self-centeredness in the extreme. I don’t know the ages of his children but he could realistically have a daughter the age of this young woman.
I’m sure he won’t be fired, but any other instructor at the university probably would be for fraternizing with a subordinate employee. A winning record covers a multitude of sins, for many fans, but it shouldn’t. Damon Evans was highly successful and efficient at his job…

However, I do know that they really do not have to answer to us, but there is One that they will, along with the rest of us, have to answer to.

ole dawg, Damon got a DUI. Being a highly public official at the university meant that wasn’t going to cut it. That’s why he got fired. Having an affair is bad, but it pales in comparision to a DUI which can potentialy kill. Marital problems are not cause for being fired from your job. Plus think about the demands we put on our head coaches. They’re never around their families. It’s a wonder that they all aren’t having marrige problems and affaris.

SEC football fans have a right to comment on what goes on in the conference and college football in general. Sandusky destroyed the program at Penn State. Player arrests and behavior issues are everywhere, such as TCU players dealing dope to team members. All of these issues affect the game. Petrino is an unpleasant person with no character. He is supposed to be a teacher, yet he lied repeatedly about this incident and his relationship with the woman. There must be provisions in Arkansas regarding relationships with subordinates. Didn’t Alabama fire the head football coach for similar activitiy? Petrino is the last coach that I would want my grandsons to play for. He should be fired, but that won’t happen as long as he wins football games.

I have to dissagree with you on this one. A head coach knows what the job calls for. An extra maritial affair shows lack of integrity which of what part of the HC’s job is to uphold and maintain. This shows lack of respect for the university and the players. By far, Petrino is not alone on this account. He just happened to get caught.

“Question for my fellow Dawg people. If the O-Line does a good job against our defense in the Spring game should we be happy or concerned?
Great question. I would probably be estatic. I think our defense has proven it can hold its own against the best (whether it can do it for 4 quarters is another question). However, the O-line has not proven anything and if they can go out there and hold their own against Jenkins, Geathers and our mammoth d-ends then they have come a long way. I don’t think it will happen though. Bobo will have a few cutsie pass plays on the opening drive to move the ball down field and everyone will get real excited. Then, as usual, we’ll get bogged down in the red zone because there is no room for the cutsie stuff down there. You’ve just got to beat people.

I thought I would be excited at first then started wondering if the O-Line, which is inexperienced, holds its own then I would question the defense. Is it as good as advertised. After reading your post it made me see that ur defesne is really good and that it would be a good sign if the O-Line looks good against them.

DIT, we will have as good of a D-front as anyone this year. If they offense can get its crap together and hold on to the damn ball for any extended period of time whatsoever we just might be alright. I am very cautiously optimistic. The running game is an afterthought to Bobo. “Hey, let’s run one off tackle just so we can say that we did.” I swear that’s his mentality. Sometimes it looks like we’re just going through the motions on some runs. In Bobo’s mind, the running game isn’t for picking up yards or anything wacky like that, its just a tool for him to get cute and “set up the pass.” Its no big deal if we get stuffed for a one yard run. We’ve got ‘em right where we want them!!! They’ll never see the play action pass coming that we’re about to do because we NEVER do anything like that!! That’s the Bobo mentality.
Sorry for the tangent and thanks to anyone who reads my garbage.
Thanks.

Crowell and Malcome are dominating for sure… DinLex has it right. It wouldn’t surprise me if both the freshman RB’s took a redshirt. Crowell is gonna have about 1300 and Malcome about 900.
However, I will add a little insider nugget. Remember when the AJC came out with the crap that Hines Ward was following Bobo around to see if liked coaching???
That was the biggest lie since Chris Peterson had a secret meeting with McGarity. That one was leaked to me by a UGA money man who was serious but in reality was only trying to fire up Richt with nasty rumors.
The truth is Ward was there to help install the Pittsburgh Steeler offense. Which is run-based but also must have an awesome defense. You very seldom see Roethlisberger make a bad mistake because his RB’s tote the rock so much. You will see the same thing in Athens this year.
Since DawginLex will take a shot at me for this inside information, I will offer proof…..The picture that went along with that AJC story tells me everything. Ward had a play-sheet that he had half poked down in his pants. That was no UGA play-sheet….. That was a Pittsburgh Steeler play-sheet. Bobo was following Hines like a lost puppy that day.

I don’t think that Petrino gets fired because of his personal life, I think he gets fired because that person that he was with was a subordinate and recently given a position, 3/28/12 and he lied about it to his AD. I don’t that the Suzanne and Don affair is even comparing apples to apples, yes is was a public affair, but they weren’t Boss and employee. As to the article, I think Kolton is a DGD and I am cautiously optimistic regarding the OL. I think that is better to have an Atheltic Line than it is to have a HUGE line, I think we Dawg fans are going to see the difference this year. Go Dawgs and GATA!

I regret to inform my fellow dawg fans that after careful research and intensive study and evaluation, I have determined that UGA offensive linemen Houston, Long, and Andrews are “white” people. I launched this investigation shortly after learning from Tide Roll that “they don’t belong at this level.” I do not take such allegations lightly and I wish it weren’t true, but folks it is time to admit that these three individuals are indeed “white” people. I had to overcome many obstacles and a well organized disinformation network to finally glean the truth, but I am satisfied that this information is legitimate. I don’t think I even need to explain to any of you the potential ramifications of this breaking news.
Once Rodney Garner hears about this, he is going to be very upset… of that I can assure you. I recommend doubling his salary and promoting him to any position he feels is justified given this very unsusual situation that we find ourselves in. Of course, Coach Friend should be immediately dismissed. I contend that he HAD to have known the racial origin of these men. I mean he works with them EVERY DAY. Either he SHOULD have known or he DID know and neither of those is an acceptable answer.
Further, we should begin asking recruits. “Are you or have you EVER been a member of the “caucasion party”. If they are able to deny this, they should sign off on legal documents to absolve the univeristy from any future liability.
Kolton Houston should be given a chance to transfer immediately. Even though he was the 6th rated guard in the United State coming out of high school by Scout.com, his alarming lack of pigementation will be just too much to overcome and he will never be able to help this team. Allow him to transfer to a lesser division with no loss of eligibility since he cooperated fully with my investigation. Andrews and Long continue to deny that they are indeed “white”. They attempted to stonewall me at every turn refusing to turn over the music from their I-phones for review. While truly sad, I think we all understand that once you tell yourself a lie every day for years, it starts to become true in your own mind… you actually stop thinking of yourself as a “white” offensive lineman. Still, banishment from college football is the only reasonable penalty for these two.
Thank you to Tide Roll for his continued efforts to make us aware of just how easy it is for one of these “white” offensive lineman to sneak in and try to blend with the rest of society. I am still trying to figure out how this went on so long in the social media/24 hour news bubble that we live in today? I make the solemn vow to each of you that I will not rest until I get to the bottom of just how this happened.
Well, there it is. I’m sorry to ruin everyone’s Easter weekend with this appalling breaking news

This story just won’t go away. Our auditors did indeed get posession of the I-phone music for Long and Andrews. It should be noted that both refused to cooperate with releasing these important records which should pretty much tell you all you need to know about their guilt.
The ratio of country to hip hop was well outside of normal paramaters and I’m not talking about Charlie Pride and Darrius Rucker type of country either. Copius amounts of Hank Jr., Faith Hill, and Garth Brooks were evident.
The hip hop music we found was even more damning. M&M, Justin Timberlake, and Vanilla Ice? C’mon who are we kidding here. Sure, there was the one track from Atlanta’s own Kriss Kross but our analysts believe this was done not as an homage to early 90’s Atlanta hip hop, but to throw us off the trail should we get too close.

I don’t know much about coaching football, but I do know that scoring 10 points in an SECCG is not good. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that its a bad thing when the damn rocket blows up on take off. You don’t have to have any piloting experience whatsoever to know that its a bad thing when a plane is nosediving to the ground. We can all see the results of Bobo’s coaching on Saturdays and they speak for themselves. He needs to figure out a way to fix it or we’re never going to win championships. Have fun with your head in the sand. Be sure to come up for air every now and then.

If you can afford to red-shirt both freshmen, I don’t see how it wouldn’t be a good move. If I.C. and K.M.stay healthy, they will provide a lot of pop at RB. Then again, those two freshmen want to play now. They both knew they were coming into a packed backfield…

UGA was #1, or #2 in pretty much every offensive category there was last year, not related to rushing. We had issue at RBs, and very little depth at OL. Thats where we lost games. We need to fix those. It’s really just that simple. The rocket didn’t blow up on the pad.
Coach Bobo’s biggest problem has been that he lacks the experience to compensate for weaknesses. Frankly, (although it would have been easier, maybe we score a few more points, win an extra game in 2 yrs) I really think getting a guy who can overcome NOT having this or that is a good solution. Much better to just fix the known issues IMO. Any new OC would have to do that as well. When we do have the pieces working, he has proven to be a very sufficient game day coach.
NOW, it’s certainly a question IF he can put the pieces together. I would imagine this is a very important year for him to prove that.

Besides Bobos unimaginative offense, his largest draw-back is not being able to adjust in the 2nd-half of games. This is why we lose games. Every other team adjust at 2nd-half but us. “The rocket didn’t blow up on the pad.”
I disagree. Bobo’s job is not to beat Kentucky, Vandy, or Ole Miss. He’s great at that, but that’s not his job. We are UGA. We have endless resources at our disposal. His job is to beat LSU, Bama, etc., and win us championships. He fails MISERABLY at this task. We have not notched a single solitary victory over a top opponent since Bobo took over as OC. Not a single one. The rocket has indeed blown up.
“Coach Bobo’s biggest problem has been that he lacks the experience…”

You are spot on, sir. Bobo has had plenty of time. Will Richt continue to let him drag the program down, ala Willie Martinez? Richt held onto Willie for 2 years too long and look what that did to the program…we are just now recovering on that side of the ball.
Now don’t get me wrong, Bobo is not the worst guy for the job. Sometimes he looks like he gets it and our offense clicks. But other times we all know what is coming from him…and so do opposing defenses. It just seems that the latter outweighs the former on gamedays.

It’s LSU’s OC job to beat us too, is it not? He’s got about 22 yrs of experience. I’m thinking he wasnt quite as good 17 yrs ago.
(I think its a interesting question as to how that game turns out if we had thier 4 RB, and they had what we showed up with, if you think our guy had the same tools to work with in that game).
Alabama, just lost a OC that had 26 yrs of experience, and replaced him with a guy that has 11, including OC before.
So, in your mind experience is not a factor in how OC learn to deal with a variety of issues?

How much experience is enough? Your two examples are guys with experience measured in decades. I bet a whole bunch of those years were not spent at major D1 programs getting their feet wet. Are we supposed to sit back with Bobo as OC and say, “Oh well, he’s be a hell of an OC in 10 more years…be patient.”
Fact of the matter is that he has reached the s#!t or get off the pot time in his career.

Ya’ll are making me feel bad. I criticize Coach Bobo All the time. I w don’t care if my name is on my grave-stone as long as there’s a Bulldawg on it. With our resources, Ga. could find an OC that could put up 60pts. a gm. We have the talent, just don’t have innovative game-plan. He also has no answer to when a good team adjust to our offense in the second-half. CMR has to change this, or this year will be a repeat of last year which is unacceptable. If I’m at another football party this year and we keep making the same mistakes all over again, I’m afraid I will be vocal about CMB AND CMRs removal as the OC and HC. Georgia deserves better. I think CMR will address these problems this year but nothings written in stone with these two…

I think you are missing my point. Bobo’s FIRST 5 years as an OC have come at a major D1 program…that is not normal. He has been learning under fire, and I have to take my hat off to him for giving it a go. But most coaches get their feet wet at smaller programs first before they step up to the big leagues.
And yes, I agree that this is a very important year for him and the entire program in general. But how much longer are we going to fail to get over the hump and say, “Next year will be a big year for us.” Dawg fans have become almost as bad as Cubs fans in this regard. There has to come a time when we draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. Richt made a step in that direction when he finally axed Willie M. and hired Grantham (which was a lucky hire, by the way…he wanted 4 others before CTG). Bobo is holding us back, just like Willie did for 5 years. Richt, it would appear, is loyal to a fault.

You can fault Richt for promoting such an inexperienced guy to that position. Thats fair. (although you then agree with exactly what I said originally). My opinion is that i’st not what he would do at this point, (maybe not in hindsigh)t. But at the time it was his way of stepping away from the OC job. A very new HC trying to figure out how HE could adapt.
Which goes along with what I have always said…we have paid a lot of dues with Richt. These other guys figured all that out on somebody elses dime.
But we are where we are. I personally think the offense took a pretty big step step last year, in the first go around with that new pace. Clearly the issue was running the ball. If we fix that, the offense is going to be plenty good, if not……….I am positive Richt will address it.

I don’t know how many years you have said “next year” we’ll be great..The past 3 years have been pretty much what I expected offensively, for reasons obvious to me. so I can’t really say what that feels like. I will say this. I DO expect this year to be a big year offensively.
aldogg2121

The offense is not bad by any stretch of the imagination…it is just not as good as it could be. In fact, if you look at Richt’s UGA offenses compared to those of Bobo, we have actually averaged more points with Bobo at the helm. But then there are extraneous factors that come into play which inflate those numbers, such as poor defense and time of possession.
I just think UGA could do so much better than Mike Bobo as OC. I’m pretty sure we are all in agreement on this point.
That being said, we are where we are. And I am always 100% behind our program.

All I’m positive about is Richt ain’t gonna do anything about Bobo/Richt offensive shortcomings. His “system” got validated by a new 5 year contract.
That was a great, big ego boost for a coach with a big ego. So big he thought he could plug any old buddy in his program’s most important coaching positions (DC and OC) and keep on keeping on.
One buddy was a disaster. The other gets out-coached regularly, even as his HC listens on the headset.
