I’ve had a lot of folks asking me about how the offensive line has looked so far. I had a chance to interview line coach Will Friend this past week on just that subject. Following are some of his observations so far:
Q: Who has had the best spring?
A: [Kenarious] Gates has had a good spring so far. We’re not far in it yet, but he’s had the best spring. The rest of the guys need to elevate like he’s done so far.”
Q: What’s the main improvement you’re looking for?
A: “Number one, with this group being younger, your offensive line has to be physical. That’s where your team gets its physicality from. I think they’ve got to be able to improve that part of it. Last year’s group, when they came to the park they were physical. That was the big thing they brought and that goes a long way as games go on. This group needs to be tougher, to play more physical, to be better on assignments. . . . And, of course, we’ve got to find some people we can count on.”
Q: Looks like junior guard Dallas Lee has been getting some work at center. What’s the thought there? .
A: “He’s done it before. He’s still got a long way to go on because he really didn’t do it at all last year. He snapped for us, but he didn’t do it in live action in a practice or game. But I think he’s got to get used to exchanging the ball to the quarterback and after that it’s blocking. [David] Andrews has done some good things. We’re just moving people around.”
Q: Do you have a starting five yet?
A: “No, not a first five. Nobody’s separated themselves with the exception of Ken Gates. Right now if you were going to play a game I know he would be there. [Chris] Burnette has done some good things, too. We’re just trying to get all the pieces together.”
Q: How is JUCO transfer Mark Beard holding up and fitting in?
A: “It’s a lot going on right now. We didn’t pull back on anything we’re installing. It’s a good thing for a midyear guy to come in early. But at the same time, when you’re the only one, the show keeps on going for everybody else. So it’s kind of hit him a bit. But he’ll get better as the spring goes on. It’s kind of spinning fast. He’s just got to keep it from beating him and he’ll be all right. . . . We’re working him at left guard. And he’s worked some at tackle, but mainly left guard.”
Q: Would you say Watts Dantzler or Austin Long is ahead at right tackle?
A: “Both of them have worked with the 1s, both of them have had good practices, both of them have done some good things. We’ll just continue to hash that out.”
Q: How has Austin Long looked? . . .
A: “He’s gotten better. He’s not where we want him yet but he’s gotten better.”
Q: Do you anticipate freshmen John Theus and Greg Pyke competing for playing time later this summer?
A: “Can we wait until after spring ball? [laughs] Right now we’re just trying to see what we’ve got with these guys. We’ve got to get them going in the right direction. We’ll go from there.
“I think both freshmen we got are real talented guys. I think they’re good athletes. They’re tough guys and they’re big. They’re going to get a shot. That’s one thing these guys have to understand, that right now is their shot with those guys not being there. They’ve got to make the most of it, because those two are going to get a shot when they get in here. That’s why we signed them.”
Q: What’s your expectations for Kolton Houston?
A: “We’re expecting Kolton to be a good player for us this year. He’s a good athlete, he’s got good strength, he can run well. He’s probably the best athlete of the guards that we’ve got, to be honest with you. If he can continue to get tougher and continue to improve, he’s going to be a good player for us. He’s got a ways to go now but he’s got a chance.”

So, the points AltamahaDawg makes either are or are not going to be focused upon by all of us, including AltamahaDawg, and be fixed; or, they are not going to be our focus as our football program’s fans, and we are instead to run in here and ATTEMPT to act like we are SUPPORTING MARK RICHT when in fact AltamahaDawg is and has been saying all the same ISSUES for Mark Richt to actually fix.
I’m not picking on AltamahaDawg.
He’s a good guy. He knows football. He roots for our football program. We should be so lucky to have such fans. Mark Richt should be so lucky.
He is one of many who feel that they must have Mark Richt’s back.
Yet, every single solitary one of them
every one of them
Runs in here and says EXACTLY PRECISELY
the exact same points as the 150 posters
FED UP
- with LOSING every game vs SEC winning record teams
- with LOSING every game vs teams made top 10
- with LOSING every game vs teams made top 25
- with opening up every paper find 34 scholarships gone
- with over-signing 109 to his 85-man limit
- with having only 73 of 109 on roster if 16 show up Fall
- with 57 on Scholarship today and 16 coming in
- with finding all this lack of RESPECT among the 109
- 34 not playing Mizzou Mark Richt gave scholarship
- to do just that 34 missing Mizzou, should be
Mark Richt is not in charge.
High time, we as a fan base said that to him.
Want him to fix it ?
Think it is being fixed telling him he is GREAT ?
Who has he beat ?
I’ll wait that answer.
73 of 109 scholarships remaining if 16 qualify and get here Fall
34 BAD PRESS
9 LOSSES in a row
Be consistent. If you said the same issues as 150 of us say to you in reply, then be a man. Own up to it like AltamahaDawg and say you said the exact same as the other 150 names on my list of this blog – that we ain’t beating the top teams and that we lack DISCIPLINE on and off the field.
I have Mark Richt’s back. I say everything that is good about him, repeatedly and then I tell the son of a gun what he needs to do to fix my football program he’s in charge of.
Guess what I tell him ?
Every word that AltamahaDawg has said in here.
Every word.
so why do they run in here and call us the bad guys ?
April 3rd, 2012
4:13 am
Each of them, has said the exact same issues we have as a team
Mainly :
(1) Lose to top teams
(2) Failed Offense
(3) Failed Special Teams
(4) Failed Discipline
This is not what the 150 identifiable different IP Addresses here have said.
It is, instead my friends, what each of them who claim to have Mark Richt’s back,
run in here and say repeatedly.
Why then, are WE the techies, they call us ?
I’m missing that…
Because they – the lot of them – are 2-faced
Attempting to act like they have Mark Richt’s back
When they themselves every one of them
say exactly the same issues we have.
We don’t call for Mark Richt to be fired.
They read our words, and say we said that.
We never did none of us.
What we say is that we are fed up :
-FED UP with LOSING
-FED UP with BAD PRESS
-FED UP with FAILED SPECIAL TEAMS
-FED UP with FAILED OFFENSE
-FED UP with NO DISCIPLINE
-FED UP with LOSING to every top team
Try to come up with a flimsy doesn’t hold water

this is the key for uga this year as well.
the o-line will be fine this year, but murray is the big question .

It’s not just his 23 fumbles and 22 interceptions in 27 games.
It’s his off-field childish immature actions.
It’s his 56 sacks in 27 games.
It’s his 59 percent completion rate.
It’s his # 72 in the nation completion percentage.
It’s his footwork.
It’s his happy feet.
It’s his 6 and one-half carries a game.
6 and 1/2 carries every game 27 games.
It’s his 1-yard per carry average.
It’s 6′ 0″.
It’s his 4.81 speed in the 40-yard dash.
It’s his locking onto a receiver.
It’s his inability to go through his progressions.
It’s his staring down a receiver.
It’s his been blessed with great receivers,
or he would be much worse.
It’s that you cannot do worse than he
It’s his ball-hog mentality.
It’s every play check-off at line to his #
It’s his inability to get other players into the game
It’s his inability to see over the line
It’s his inability to throw over the DL
It’s his slower than SEC DL
It’s his inability to therefore get into passing lanes
It’s his very poor touch on short passes
It’s his pass-happy approach to games
It’s his 0-9 record vs teams made top 25
It’s his 0-9 record vs SEC teams with winning SEC record
It’s certainly him.
It’s his, not his OL or RB, heebie-jeebies
It’s his YIPS in big games
It’s Aaron Murray not in the weight room
It’s Aaron Murray watching film instead
It’s all his Spring Break antics
It’s how his girlfriend’s family must feel this morning
It’s how many times every poster to this blog has just shaken our collective heads at him, on and OFF the field.
Or, as the NFL Advisory Committee told Aaron Murray, late in the game, game on the line, you have the ball – who do you think of as the QB ?
Aaron Murray ?

The humiliating truth about those "special admits"
April 3rd, 2012
7:26 am
Georgia Tech has the nation’s highest average SAT score for football players, and also the highest average high school GPA.
UGA, on the other hand, had one of the very lowest SAT averages, as well as a very low GPA average. As a result, three-fourths of UGA players are “special admits,” when means that they can not meet the minimum educational and intelligence requirements for admission to UGA, even as low as that is.
Yes, it would be great if Tech was more competitive with UGA, but Tech fans are proud of our heritage of having intelligent, responsible athletes who go on to rewarding careers and contribute to society.
Contrast this with the very unintelligent t-h-u-g-s that UGA recruits. The 50 arrests over the last four years is proof enough, not to mention winning the Fulmer Cup. Most of these goons are tossed out after their eligibility is over, and many end up on welfare.
UGA is clearly just a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y dedicated to winning at all costs, and most UGA fans are okay with this, with no concern about the embarrassment this brings to the State of Georgia.
Mark Richt is the architect of this situation. As long as he is paid a huge salary, he will continue to recruit the illiterate brain-dead t-h-u-g-s who he thinks will win. Unfortunately for UGA fans, he’s not remotely in the same league with the top coaches in the SEC.
So the bottom line is that Georgia Tech – win or lose – does so with honor and integrity, while the lowlife punks, woman beaters, drug users, and drunks in Athens continue to embarrass us all.

-ball hog
-me me me
-Heisman Trophy I’m going to win
-steals 6 and half carries from RB all 27 games
-not beat single SEC team winning SEC record
-not beat single team making top 25
-not beat single team making top 10
-absolutely gets away with everything off the field
-entitled
-thinks he has already arrived
-brags to AJ-C “well there has NOT been Signature Win”
-blames everyone else for his own failures
-fault of OL
-fault of RB
-fault of FB
-fault of WR
-dropped passes
-ran wrong route
-not same page as QB
-poor play call
-too much time watching film
-not enough time working on weights, running
-thinks he is great
-sure he will be in NFL
I have news for him. I am certain he will not be.

April 3rd, 2012

Highest SAT. Hogwash. If your football players, which is what we are talking about are so bloody smart, how come they cannot graduate ?
If your Integrity is SO HIGH, how come you are on NCAA PROBATION back-to-back repeat Offenders in FOOTBALL, again ?
Why’d you LOSE to UGA in football, lose to UGA in baseball, lose to UGA in women’s basketball and only in men’s basketball beat us ?
Why do we have higher Graduation Rate and higher APR in football than Georgia tek ?
Tell us again how you are # 36 and you think that makes you Harvard ?

Does not sound like Friend annoints starters like Richt does and not let others into the competition. If they are going to use Samuel at FB they better let him run the ball some to keep the defenses off balance. Not running the FB with the ball last year just gave the defenses a clue as to what we were NOT going to do…So when the FB was in the backfield they new he was not going to run the ball.

Why, when EVERY poster to this blog has given our own football program a solid working over, would you interrupt that going on amongst ourselves to have us stop and talk about Georgia tek who cannot graduate your athletes, cannot get ladies to come to school downtown in the slums where no one is safe, talk about Sports in a Sports Blog on Football when you are 1-10 vs our coach none of us are satisfied with ourselves, talk about how great you are NOT at # 36 not # 1 “Hey, we’re # 36″ when no one brags about being # 36 at nothing, discuss SAT to get in college when none of your student-athletes are engineering majors and none graduate, act like you have Integrity when you are once again on

If you are so smart, why would you interrupt us bickering amongst ourselves about supporting the coach, players and their lousy record on and off the field, to discuss Georgia tek ?

South Carolina is talking about Football because :
(1) They made it higher in every poll than us
(2) They beat us, again – 2 wins in row vs us
(3) They had a better year than us by a long shot
(4) They are not having the kinda off-season we are
(5) They did not end up # 5 SEC team in every poll like us
(6) They did not have to back-in to SEC Championship Game like we did waiting for Arkansas to beat them last year
(7) They will not have to back-in to SEC Championship Game this year either playing LSU and Arkansas
(8) We don’t play Arkansas 2012 as we did not 2011
(9) We don’t play LSU 2012 (or Alabama again) like we didn’t 2011
(10) We lose our entire Defense after 2012
(11) As bad as their QB had been 2010 and 2011, he was a LOT better than our QB that day head-to-head.
(12) They actually have and have had an OL
(13) They actually have and have had a running game
(14) They actually have and will have a running game which we certain have not had since Knowshon Moreno played 2 years and left
(15) They actually beat SEC teams who had a winning record, unlike us who have NOT starting with Kentucky in 2007.
(16) They need no excuses about the game
(17) They find your inability to say they made it higher in the polls than us and beat us, laughable that our 10-42 is all we have to talk about.

I think Richt and Bobo went soft with the offensive line after all the injuries we had there in 2008. That was a mistake. Healthy O-linemen are no better than injured O-linemen if they are not tough. All the depth in the world will do us no good if these guys cannot put a hat on somebody and drive them back. We become more and more of a pass happy finesse team every year while other SEC teams are winning championships with run-first physical offenses. Richt and Bobo just don’t get it.

Will is becoming a real Richt disciple – “blame the players.”
So, remember, when defenses (Boise, UT, UK, LSU, MSU, etc) shut down our offense for quarters ands halves at the time, just remember it has nothing to do with offensive schemes, game planning, or predictable play calling by Richt/Bobo.
No way.
It’s “player execution.”

Seriously though, Murray still has a lot to prove. Can he hold on to the ball? Can he throw deep over the middle with accuracy? Can he avoid fumbling and interceptions when pressured? Can he make good decisions? But still, he’s probably the best QB in the East. And one of the best in the SEC. Whether you like it or don’t like it. Learn to live with it, cause that’s the way it is cause Stone Cold said so.

1953 dog has it about right. If last year’s line sets the standard for toughness then one can see where Friend could find little positive to say about this year’s group. At least he is realistic. I think this means that we’ll beat the easy teams and lose to the better SEC teams — re-run of the past 5-6 years. I’m hoping what he said is less a reflection of the current talent than prior coaching insufficiencies.

Tidey Boll – go home to mommy now – she’s calling you. Says you are a sad, pathetic little brat that needs more discipline.

UGA was to HEAVY and slow to react on the OL last year. The OL talent there now is more athletic and quick. Kolton Houston, Chris Burnette, Gates and Dallas Lee (if he is healthy) will start. Clowney did not dominate the UGA OL. He had one great play that changed the outcome of the game. Actually, UGA had 100+ more yards than the Game Clucks. The OL needs experience and they need to stay healthy. The talent and depth is there.
