ATHENS – Georgia held its first formal scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Sanford Stadium. And while the defense dominated as it has been throughout, there were some positive signs for the offense.
Namely, Jay Rome.
The redshirt freshman tight end from Valdosta got loose for two touchdowns, including a leaping grab in the corner of the end zone that had coaches and players buzzing long after the two-hour scrimmage concluded.
“It was pretty acrobatic,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “He had to kind of turn his body and reach back and snag it. He landed off his feet and the ball didn’t come out.”
Rome’s other touchdown came on a 30-yard pass from Hutson Mason down the middle of the field, a la Orson Charles.
“I ran a little seam route up the middle,” Rome recounted. “I don’t know if it was a broken coverage or what but I looked up and there was nobody in the middle and I just reached up and caught the ball and jogged in. There was nobody around.”
But it was the short touchdown catch during goal-line work at the end of the practice everybody was raving about.
“I ran a corner route to the back pylon and Parker [Welch] put it high for me and I went up to catch it,” Rome said. “It was a really high ball but I was able to get up there for it. I attribute that to basketball. I don’t know if I could’ve gotten up there last year when I had all that extra weight on me. Coach [Mark] Fox made a point to run that off of me and I think that helped.”
Afterward, Rome was beaming. Topping off the whole day was the fact that his father, Valdosta legend and Clemson two-way star Stan Rome, was there along with little brother Justin, 9.
“I just told myself I was going to come out and play hard and just have fun at today’s scrimmage,” said Rome, who ESPN rated as the top tight end prospect in the country last year. “That’s the biggest thing me and my dad were talking about, just having fun. I talk to him probably two or three times a day.”
With Charles, Aron White and Athur Lynch ahead of him last season, Rome redshirted and decided to go out for the Georgia basketball team. He played sparingly in a backup role as a forward and missed much of the Bulldogs’ off-season football work the first three months of this year.
“The transition from basketball wasn’t nearly as hard as the transition to basketball,” Rome said. “I came back and I was in really good shape. I just had to get back to being really physical and stuff like that. I’ve been staying after practice trying to catch a lot of extra balls just trying to catch myself back up and getting used to it.”
Rome wasn’t the only young offensive player to turn heads. Several Bulldogs mentioned that true freshman tailback Keith Marshall looked good, especially on one particular run.
“Keith Marshall showed why he was the number one running back,” senior wideout Tavarres King said. “He broke a long one up the middle that was pretty nice.”
Georgia’s No. 1 offense drove the length of the field against the No. 1 defense on the opening drive but failed to get in the end zone after reaching the 1 and had to settle for a field goal.
“The offense came out with a bang today,” nose guard John Jenkins said. “You could tell they were fighting. Overall it was a good scrimmage.”
Quarterback Aaron Murray agreed.
“Bobo was very happy with us at the end,” Murray said. “It wasn’t perfect but, for being a first scrimmage, I thought it we looked very impressive offensively. We had some great drives, made some great plays in both the passing and running game. So I’m happy with how far we’ve come in two weeks.”
Following are what coach Mark Richt referred to as the Unofficial/Official stats. You have to keep in mind the scrimmages are not conducted like a real games. Most of the work is situational. So for what it’s worth . . .

Jay Rome did not catch either TD from Aaron Murray.
Keith Marshall did not get as many carries as two (2) different walk-ons, who both got 8 carries. What gives around here anymore ?
Aaron Murray threw another interception. What else is new ?
How many fumbles did Aaron Murray have ?
He averages almost a fumble a game.
Aaron Murray also averages over two (2) sacks a game.
Defense dominated Aaron Murray : Who doesn’t ?
9 sacks on the scrimmage : That would be Aaron Murray.
Aaron Murray has not beat a team who finished with a SEC winning record team, yet.

No.

cliffclimber your next post about Mark Richt playing Favorites, that that’s the label on him is 100 percent correct.
I think the examples are not Suspension Kings like Washaun Ealey and Carlton Thomas, but guys like Aaron Murray beer cans Georgia tek buddies tweeting going to Dome to kick some Boise State fannies and his most recent posing for a photo with his glasses on this Spring Break having sex, and Caleb King suspended so many times no one could count yet always the Starter too like puny Aaron Murray who has not beat a winning record SEC team, and in fact Carlton Thomas dives up the middle from a 169 lbs puny midget who clearly has a drug addiction and Washaun Ealey who is a guy who could not stay out of trouble either; and while we are at it playing guys like Isaiah Crowell who demonstrates nothing to me to-date including all his quotes this off-season about Heisman Trophy and how he wouldn’t change a thing about 2011 when he has suspended twice for all the same issues as Washaun Ealey and Caleb King and Carlton Thomas.
I don’t disagree with you cliffclimber. I actually agree with you – I am just suggesting you pick better heroes, sir.
PICK : KEITH MARSHALL, which is why I wanted Mark Richt to sign his EXTENSION, which he has not done since offered to him November, December, January, February, March, and now April.

One of his touchdown grabs was said to be very impressive. Rome has all the athleticism to pick up right where Orson Charles left off. He could be a big-play target for Aaron Murray and the offense this season. [AJC] [...]

Why are there so many non Georgia fans on this blog? Don’t you have anything better to do? Nobody said they were satisfied with the last few years, nobody is satisified with the playing, coaching, behavior. Who are we going to get to coach the team that is any better than Coach Richt? Nobody. We need to support what we have and hope that the current staff can get things turned around. Let’s hope for a good 2012.

“The Georgia Bulldogs held a scrimmage yesterday, signifying the official midpoint of the Dawgs’ spring practice. There has been a lot of news coming out of Athens since spring practice started on March 20, and very little of it has been encouraging. Top Dog 34: It’s Mettenberger vs. Murray once again for SEC’s best QB in 2012

Richt has proven to be a real unpopular politician in the past concerning his perferences for starting QB at Georgia during his twelve years tenure with no national title and no SEC title since the last of Donnan’s boys left in 2005. Lemay and his parents should be fully aware of Richt’s posturing of QBs at UGA since the Shockley debacle. There’s no way a smart, talented guy at QB is ever going to wait 3 years just to play 1 year again. While Shockley was kept on the bench by Richt there was no way the “man that knows what hell he’s doing”, was going to allow Shock to transfer and start immediately for a rival SEC school. So Richt figured it would be better to hold Shock down than play against him. This is known as reverse recruiting.
In no way should LeMay allow Richt to waste his talent and eligibility in the manner as Shockley’s talent and eligibility was wasted. I’m a Georgia fan but I’d rather see LeMay excel at QB at another major college than to see his talent go down the screwed up drain of Richt’s political QB manipulations & QB musical chairs at Georgia. There’s a reason that a coach like Richt, despite all the top recruiting classes, has failed to win a National title and it begins and end with Richt. I can see LeMay transferring from Georgia to Wisconsin or even Michigan, before Richt gives him a raw deal (as Shockley got). It’s good for college football to see the best players perform at any of the various D-1 schools, not just ones’ favorite school. Go Dogs !!
*********************
Boy, are you an idiot.
Shockley has said time and time again that his waiting for his turn at UGA and leading UGA to an SEC title defined his character.

Also, did you notice that the spring is “1 vs 1’s” and “2 vs 2’s” which means that Mason did his work against the backups?

87Dawg, yes he threw against the second team but the passes still have to be accurate. I was at the G-Day game with Mettenberger and he threw against the second team as well but everyone there knew he looked MUCH better than Murray. Mett’s passes were lazers and Murray was 20 yards away from his receiver at one point. Murray is much improved however, why is Mason not getting more of a chance? This coming year if we get up in a game Mason needs and deserves to get more reps!

Bottom line- Mason at the very least can do no worse that tossing a few pick 6’s and costing us game with that and fumbles.

You have NO OFFENSIVE LINE! TALENT WISE OR DEPTH WISE. And all you want to talk about is how great Aaron Murray is. What is wrong with you people? LSU outscores you 35-0 in the 2nd half of the SEC championship game, AND you blow a 16-0 halftime lead in your bowl game vs. Mich ST.! ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PRETEND, LIKE Y’ALL DO, THAT THESE THINGS DIDN”T OCCUR? UNTIL YOU FACE UP TO WHAT AN EMBARRASMENT YOUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM HAS BECOME UNDER RICHT AND BOBO, IT WILL NEVER GET BETTER. THE FIRST STEP IS ACKNOWLEDGING THE OBVIOUS: YOUR’S IS A 2ND RATE PROGRAM UNDER THOSE TWO. Richt hires Bobo’s buddy Will Friend as your Offensive line coach for that very reason. Because he’s Bobo’s friend! And y’all act like none of this matters. And the most troubling fact of all of this is: YOUR AD MCGARITY IS JUST LIKE ALL OF Y’ALL! WHAT A FRIGGIN NIGHTMARE.

Have not beat any team winning SEC record - starting with Kentucky in 2007.

Aaron Murray set lots of records in the Scrimmage yesterday. He got sacked 9 times.
Just imagine if 9 defensive backs were not arrested, suspended, kicked off the team, beat up little girls, flunked-out and just plain quit ?
1 interception would have been many more.
He has beat 2 teams who got to 8-wins; then again Auburn didn’t even have a winning record in The SEC, so what does that mean ? You aren’t going to end up better than the other 48 teams who won 8-Games 2011, without even having a winning record in your conference.
All the way back to the Kentucky game in 2007, Mark Richt has not beat any SEC team with a winning SEC record.

(2) beer cans in photos on week off before he was 21
(3) Tweets to Boise St headin’ to Dome to kick some fannies
(4) pics with his Georgia tek buddy all over the Internet
(5) putting his name in the NFL Draft Advisory to be told, son when your team is down, has the ball and it is the end of game, is Aaron Murray the name you think of ?
(6) pic with his girlfriend, 3 guys in his motel room with glasses on.
______________________________________________

Why does he wear his glasses in bed, but not to throw ?
How does # 72 in nation pass completion rate get into NFL ?
Answer, he was told by NFL draft analysts this week that if that is all he can do in college playing 10 cupcakes – not 1 single win either year – against an SEC team with a winning SEC record – that he cannot expect to compete in the NFL as the # 72 Pass Completion Percentage QB in college, losing to every top team while watching his Opponent QB counterpart, FAR OUTPERFORM him head-to-head 11 times to-date.
Hutson Mason also out-performed him and did Zach Mettenberger ?
What else is new ?
Why no totals on fumbles by Aaron Murray ?
9 sacks and an interception ?
Sounds like Spring stats are the SAME as Fall Stats to me.
