Team leaders preach accountability as Georgia loses another player to transfer

ATHENS – The hits just keep coming for the Georgia Bulldogs.

For the second time in as many days, a player informed coach Mark Richt he was unhappy with his role on the team and is seeking a transfer.

Deas

Deas

Marc Deas, a redshirt sophomore safety from Kissimmee, Fla., has decided to quit the team due to lack of playing time and is seeking a transfer, Richt said Saturday. Deas joins junior defensive lineman Derrick Lott, who made a similar decision less than 24 hours earlier.

“It was really an almost identical situation,” Richt said. “[Deas] felt like he wasn’t going to get the opportunity to get the kind of playing time he was hoping for at Georgia. I think both kids love Georgia, and we love them. They just didn’t feel it was going to happen for them during the time frame that they were here. So they decided to move on and go where they feel like they’re going to have a better chance of playing. That’s their choice to make.”

Their choices came on the heels of news earlier this week that at two of Georgia’s star defensive players – linebacker Alec Ogletree and safety Bacarri Rambo – are facing multiple-game suspension after failing a UGA-administered drug tests. Alan Ingram, Rambo’s coach at Seminole County High School, confirmed that Rambo is expected to miss four games due to marijuana use and said as many as five UGA players, includingOgletree, flunked surprise post-spring-break drug screenings arranged by the athletic association.

Richt and Georgia officials have refused to confirm or deny those and other reports, but have acknowledged they’re in the midst of “a process that has to run its course.”

Richt insisted Saturday the decisions of Lott and Deas have nothing to do with any ongoing disciplinary matters.

“There was no discipline issue, there were no problems, no academic issues,” Richt said. “They were just looking for an opportunity to play. . . . I’m telling you that straight up.”

Georgia has incurred an alarming rate of attrition in 2012. Since the Bulldogs returned from their Outback Bowl loss to Michigan State on Jan. 3, 11 players have either left the Bulldogs, been dismissed from the team or are expected to miss games due to disciplinary suspensions. In addition toOgletree and Rambo, fellow defensive starters Sanders Commings and Branden Smith are also facing suspensions. Tailback Carlton Thomas and cornerback Jordan Love each quit due to a lack of playing time and three other players were dismissed in the wake of a dorm-room theft.

All this negativity is occurring at a time when Georgia is being mentioned as a national championship contender for next season. That’s starting to grate on the Bulldogs’ players that have managed to stay in line.

“We’re going through some stuff and, as a team, we have to work together to solve those issues,” said linebacker Christian Robinson, a senior from Norcross . “We have two weeks left of spring ball and then we’ll have a break. We’ll definitely sit down as a group and lay down what our expectations are as far as holding each other accountable. We have such a great opportunity. We don’t want to throw it away. At this point it’s about grabbing whatwe’ve got left and dealing with it.”

Said senior defensive end Cornelius Washington: “There’s a whole lot of distractions. But, you know, you’ve just got to bring the guys in and tell them, ‘look, you’ve got to eliminate the outside distractions and focus in on what’s most important, which is try to get to Miami next year.’ So you’ve got to keep instilling the idea of what we’re trying to get done around here and just make sure they keep pushing.”

In the cases of Deas and Lott, it doesn’t appear that their losses will profoundly impact Georgia’s ability to compete. Deas (6-foot-1, 197 pounds) had three tackles last season playing mainly special teams. Lott (6-4, 303) appeared in five games in his career and recorded a total of 10 tackles.

But the sum total of the Bulldogs’ attrition is starting to stack up. Including past signees that  failed to gain academic admission and players that have had to leave the program for any reason, Georgia is up to 30 players that could have had eligibility for the 2012 season.

“You definitely need as full of a boat as you can have,” Richt said. “You want to make sure you have enough guys out there to do all of your special teams work and everything. But that’s part of the reason we’re making sure that every guy, from the starters on offense and defense down through the scout team, are getting work [on special teams].”

Robinson hit the nail on the head. The players need to hold each other accountable to keep the off-the-field shenanigans under control. In terms of the guys transferring, there’s not a whole lot than can be done other than wish them well. If their hearts weren’t in it at Georgia, it’s best for both parties to sever ties.

Ok thats it. Between the end of recruiting and fall practice, there is never any good news concerning UGA football. The only headlines are about players goofing up and leaving the team.

Therefore I resolve not to read the sports page until August.

Adios everyone, see you this fall. GO DAWGS!!

Just a sign of the times, no matter what school. Many players don’t want to try to stay, work hard and beat out anybody so they hit the road. Now if they flat can’t beat out the next guy, they don’t stay and be a good team guy so they hit the road. Just like high school, they just quit or go play another sport.

Well — hopefully, we’ll have at least 24 scholarship players on the roster (including a punter & kicker) by the time the season arrives……… It seems logical that there might be something more behind the scenes, especially with Deas, since our depth there has already disappeared due to suspensions and other guys leaving….. Maybe I should abandon my usual “GO DAWGS” and say “STAY, DAWGS!”…

The attitude at UGA has to change NOW! It might already be too late for next season. The overarching theme at UGA the past 5-6 years is the players aren’t ALL IN! There’s plenty of blame to pass around. Senior leadership, current culture, parents, etc. Bottom line, however, when it becomes the culture of the team for a long period of time it is the fault of the coaching staff.

Players leaving because not enough playing time, even when others don’t deserve to be in front? Lott, getting bumped by Drew, who did nothing last season. Ealey getting benched when Caleb couldn’t score. Mettenberger not getting reps even when he crushed Murray over Spring scrimmages. Deas not getting reps, even though the guy in front of him gets suspended? Don’t blame thse guys for quitting/transferring. Richt runs a favoritism program, instead of a merit based program like Spurrier.

Just so I get this straight; we lose another player for the 2012 season down to 76 on Scholarship now – including 3 Walk-Ons who never play Offense or Defense, and that is good news ?

Were that in fact, true, then :

(1) Why is it the players are saying : “There’s a whole lot of distractions” ?

and

(2) Why is the Coach is saying : “You definitely need as full of a boat as you can have,” Mark Richt is saying. “You want to make sure you have enough guys out there ”

Well, yeah coach and team : The SEC is a long season. And, after our 12 cupcakes, only 1 of whom made any top 25, there is Arkansas, or LSU or Alabama to play in The SEC Championship Game and you don’t want to go 10-42 against them. Then, there is the bowl game and you don’t want to go to 7-5 in bowl games.

This is getting so old.

And, it has been so long since we beat a team who made it to either the top 10 or even made it to the top 25 of any poll anywhere.

76 on Scholarship – really only 73. Self-Imposed Double PROBATION for us 2012, and to think as Chip Towers says we are Starting Out # 6 in all the polls 2012.

73 of 109 left standing.

Signed 109 Scholarships Mark Richt has toward his 85-man limit.

73 of 109 remaining.

Nah, attrition is not an issue around here.

Looks alot like what we endured last year at UF with all the players leaving for various reasons. If your team can stay relatively healthy, then it won’t be that big of a deal. If not, then it could be a tough season. Truth be told, if they don’t want to be there, then you’re better off without them. Jay Rome, Ray Drew, and Corey Moore all looking good in spring drills. Moore’s performance may have been the deciding factor in Deas transferring in hopes of playing time (also think Connor Norman has passed him on the depth chart).

I think we have enough talent to survive Missouri, and then get to full strength for the stretch run and head to Atlanta (much to the consternation of many posters on this board).

In spite of a couple of rough years, Mark Richt still has the highest winning percentage of any SEC coach against D-1 teams with winning records. Note to critics- this does not count cupcakes.

Looks like the Dogs will get Brendan Langley and JJ Green for our secondary, and the main problem with our offensive line haul will be which player who wants to be a Dog does not get an offer. This is shaping up as a monster year and we have the scholarship numbers to really load up and rebuild our depth.

Richt and his boy Garner were so desperate to sign players that they offered marginal talent. Same can be said about Lott. The only thing this guy could do was fall off of a scooter. He was demoted to 3rd team after Drew and Washington moved to D.E. behind Smith and Abry Jones. Then Thornton has been moved to D.E. and he had 3 sacks in scrimmage. Add Sterling Bailey when he returns, and Lott would be lucky to play a single down this year. That makes 6 quality D.E’s ahead of Lott, so the kid made a good decision. However, if he can’t compete at UGA for playing time, and he quits, where does he think he will earn playing time? Probably a division 2 school like Ga.Southern. Bottomline is Deas will never play at a division 1 program and Lott will be a backup his whole career. If anything this shows how GOD awful UGA’s coaches are at evaluating high school talent. They have missed on some many prospects, and it is showing now on the field. They lack of talent on the O.L. is a total joke. Yet, Richt and his terrible coaching staff all get raises. The problem at UGA is McGarity and the athletic board for giving Richt an extention and these average coaches raises. My GOD, how do you get a raise when you have proven over and over again that you can’t evaluate high school talent, you can’t recruit, and when you do get kids on campus, you can’t coach them up. That is the problem at UGA, and it will never change as long as Richt is the coach. He never, ever, holds players or coaches accountable for their performance, and that is a total lack of leadership. That sums up Richt’s whole career. No ability to evaluate players or coaches. Sorry UGA fans, but the truth hurts, and this guy has shown his total lack of ability to manage a program

Its only the Trolls making a big deal about Deas just so they can bash Richt some more. You can only play 11 at a time, so what’s the problem. If we lose game because of the lack of a couple part timers, then we should worry, but I don’t see this impacting us much. There may be a few more that needs to hit the road too as in also…

Richt’s still cleaning house after taking all the criticism in 2010. The preacher finally understands how the real world works. Instead of sending up another prayer petition for things to go well, he’s now actually taking action on his own to make it happen. Took him a long time to figure out that’s how you get things done , but better late than never.

Wow, all signs point to a very deep and talented team. When former 4 and 5 star recruits are leaving the team because they can’t crack the lineup, you know things in Athens are headed in the right direction. This is all very positive news and when our starting D gets back on the field…look out. I can’t remember an offseason when all the stars are starting to align so early. Go Dawgs!!!! I’m failing to see what the big deal is regarding the players who are leaving for “more playing time”. Love, Thomas, Daes, and Lott weren’t going to see the field in any significant way anyway. So take off guys. Who cares? And the 3 willing to steal from fellow teammates were rightfully told to take a hike as well. And with the defense we have, none of those guys were going to see lots of action either. It’s much ado about nothing. Chip has to fill a certain amount of column inches, so he drags these non-stories out ad nausem. It still won’t change the fact that the team will be 4-0 when it gets back to full strength to face the meat of the schedule.

What amazes me the most is how many 3rd , 4TH and 5TH string players are a legend in their own mind. They have a real problem accepting the fact that they are not good enough to be a regular player and instead of accepting their role of getting the best ready to contend for the SEC title and possibly a national title they would rather play for some 1-AA team that want even get them a scout to their games.
If it was me the possibility of getting another SEC ring and a National Title RING would be well worth staying on the team and admitting my lesser role but very important role.

The people complaining is just the bad fans that looking to lynching Coach Richt after the hot siting failed and he gots a new contract. Instead this here is just example of roster manegement where Coach Richt is casting outs the stinkys that turns out not to have or expose SEC talents. That way we frees schollies for new recruits and can signs new Dream Team.

That how Sabans builds team at Bammer by cutting the non-performers. You either earn your schollie by playing good football or you hit the road and don’t let door knob hit you where God Lord split you.

That way we get more open schollies for good recruits and remaining players know they have to win to keep schollies cause this aint no kiddies league.  You either play well and expose talents for NFL by displaying SEC speed.  Or we cut you loose as stinkys and bring in new player to replacing your sorry rear.  Its is as simple as that.

The only complexing is Adams and his pointy heads but McG gots to set Adams straight.

I’m ecstatic that these 2 players elected to leave UGa. In 5 years they accounted for 13 tackles so give me a break…..they would have left Bama, UT, UF, etc with so little playing time. It is good for them and good for UGa. We have 2 additional scholarships that we can offer to players who can handle competition and who don’t quit when the going gets tough. Go Dawgs!!!

Carlton Thomas led the team in yards per carry, like Ealey did, and still couldn’t get his fair share of reps.

No wonder they transferred.

Mettenberger has looked great, ever since he transferred from playing for Mark Richt, a coach, everyone knows, who plays his class favorties, instead of top performers. Mettenberger went out and led his team to the National Championship once he found a coach who rewarded performance.

Ealey ran for over 1100 yards, and over 6 yards per carry this year.

Cam Newton won the Heisman at Auburn once he transferred.

Some coaches just play favorites, that’s the label on Mark Richt.

And players continue to drop like flies.

This is no big deal. Coaches like Nick Saban forceable weed out players that don’t make the grade, which opens up more scholarships. No offense to Deas, but he’s not a SEC caliber defensive back. With Drew and Washington moving to DE, Lott saw his PT falling off the table.

Like I said, this is no big deal!

It’s funny how when the exact same thing happens at Bama, all of you UGA fans are quick to point the finger and accuse “Satan” of being an oversigner. You losers are the biggest hypocrites in the history of mankind. Mark Richt is running players off at an alarming rate, and all you guys do is blame the poor players??? What a joke.

Charlie Daniels was right. It looks to me like the devil has went down to Georgia, and he’s lookin for some souls to to steal.

This makes me sickening how so many bad fans is a trying to hot sit Coach Richt. We knows Coach Richt is casting out the players that no good and stinkys. If we don’t cut loose the stinkys boys as part of roster manegements then we stuck with the sorry freeloaders for 4 years and that keeps schollie taken up by stinkys instead of talented recruits.

The only way to fixes it is to cast out the stnkys players that not exposing talents. If they not exposing talent on field then they don’t deserve access to the parties and ladies in Athens. But you have to do like The Book says and cast out those that not exposing talents to play with SEC speed.

Who besides the homers at the AJC was mentioning UGA as national championship contenters?

I haven’t heard any such nonsense besides the beaners at the AJC who make their livings boosting UGA from February to August as the preseason MNC. Then of course the “greatest team ever” actually has to play a game and the collapse occurs.

You Bammer trolls get off our blog and keep your filthy Sabans away from GA recruits. We own state and recruits and that means this site to. Go back to bed with your sisters tonight.

And Zach Mettenburger was a second rate hack that beat out by All-SEC Murray. That why we gave Zach the Hack his releases.

What baffles me the most is that the athletic department had a meeting with all student athletes before spring break. Did these players not understand that they would be tested when they returned from spring break? How stupid can some people be?

Hairy Dawg,

The “we own this state” spiel doesn’t stand up to the events of Feb. 2, so save it for the Techies. To the kids in Georgia now gazing westward: I-20 is ready when you are.

What an extra special time to be a walk-on at UGA. Plenty of scholarships available.

This is not a problem, although Lott seemed to be destined for rotational work. There are plenty of players waiting in the wings. Our main problem with competing for any title is Aaron Murray. He has got to cut down on interceptions. He can’t even make it through a scrimmage game without throwing a pick. Ball security is the most important issue with our offense. We will score plenty, no doubt. We just can’t give anything away.

That is why Saban is scum. Not cause he over signing and roster manegement. But cause he comes into GA to try to steal GA players that is supposed to wear red and black for Dawgs. Saban tries to get them to be traitors to home state by playing for Bama instead of a helping Dawgs win BCS. Sabans is trying to get the GA young mens to be Beneditcs Arnolds against Dawgs. Thats what not fair.

The oversigning problem is an Adams problem not a Saban problem. Adams and his pointy heads has been applying all the restrictoins that keep Dawgs from effective roster manegement like Sabans. Adams is the problem there’s.

Surely the kid would play in light of all the suspensions IF HE WAS ANY GOOD. If he would not have been palying in light of all this attrition one wonders why he was ever given a scholarship in the first place.

Why are folks arguing about Mettenberger being a starter one way or the other? He was good enough to get a SEC scholarship out of HS. He’s a big kid, with a rifle arm, a RS Junior, who had a year of starts at a JC in between. You would think it’s about time for him to be a productive player. Looks to me as if Miles saw the exact same thing as Richt. Good to have him as a back up, but not ready for a starting role, until Maybe now. But if LSU had a 3rd yr returning starter, Zack would still not be the automatic starter. He is by default now. Not to say he won’t do a great job, but clearly he didnt “take” that job away from anybody. I think he is finally a true passer they haven’t had, but yet to be seen if LSU is really a true passing team around him. We will see, and best of Luck to him, unless we play em.

What exactly is the issue here? I’ve never understoood how just mentioning “Mettenberger” was some dig at Georgia.

We must stay positive people. We have been doing ok for many years with bad coaching and all that. I think we have always had the problem of people being unhappy playing for UGA… This isn’t Bama or Auburn or Tech or LSU or Florida. We have always had a poor attitude with our players but we have always made it happen. GOOOO DAWGS!!!

“good call UGA football…seems our “dawg fans” are major major bandwagon fans, which makes me sick to my stomach! all things aside we do seem to have an underlying issue, but i have complete faith in the dawgs and the coaching staff…we WILL be fine! whatever the problem is “this” season will be resolved and we will improve on our record from last season. “DAWG FANS”…stop criticizing “YOUR TEAM” and start feeding on the positives at UGA. theres going to be negativity at any school, ours just seems to be building up around the same time…the team leaders will step up, the selfish teammates will hunker down and join the group, and we will do some amazing things this year. I dont expect to hear anymore negativity coming from our beloved dawgs this season, and Lord willing a lot less next season. I totally agree with “UGA Football”. UGA has never been a school with good players or coaches but they still make it through and have done fairly well in the last 15 years. UGA fans need to quit complaining about their team. UGA is not bad and has a long history in College football with many successes. UGA will never be a great team but they can keep being a good one. UGA has always lacked coaching and talent but they can still make a difference in an effort to win close games against other SEC schools and close games against Tech for the fans. Go Dawgs!!!!

I think Georgia and Coach Richt finally has it right. If a player breaks the rules, he accepts the consequences. It might mean running steps or missing four games. If he don’t have the sense to do the right things, he will be caught and punished. EVEN starters.

If a player is not good enought to start and wants to transfer. Coach Richt doesn’t hold it against him and even helps the player to get to another school where he can get playing time.

Like I said, Georgia finally has gotten it right, and the Georgia Bulldogs will be just fine this fall.

I’m so disappointed in these young men. Unfortunately for UGA these guys sign with them in hopes of only going to the next level. It’s rare to catch a Thomas Brown, David Pollack, David Greene and a Brandon Boykins type player to fill your roster. Most of these kids fail to get their College Education and leave empty handed. If they are lucky enough to make it to the next level they end up broke and mismanaging their money. UGA does not recruit character or players who are academically sound so I will suggest that they hire some more physically abled assistant coaches to keep these guys in line. Hell… most of these guys had behavior issues in high school.

The problem is that Athens more heavily policed than any comparable town in the country. I am UGA fan, but if I was a recruit, I wouldn’t go to Athens for the simple fact that you get arrested for jay-walking – and that is not a joke. You can’t jay-walk in Athens. Lets be real, a young kid, age 18, away from home for the first time, and praised by the students is going do something stupid his freshman year. That does not make it right, but neither should it suprise any one that these kids are getting caught. These is nothing really wrong with MOST of these kids, the program, or CMR. It’s Athens.
