ATHENS — Georgia’s roster took another hit on Saturday.
Marc Deas, a redshirt sophomore safety from Kississimee, Fla., has decided to quit the team due to lack of playing time and is seeking a transfer, coach Mark Richt said after Saturday’s scrimmage.
“I talked to him yesterday and he said he just wasn’t getting the opportunity for playing time he’d hoped for,” Richt said.
Deas joins defensive lineman Derrick Lott, who made a similar decision on Friday.
That makes 11 players who have quit, been dismissed or are facing suspension since Georgia’s Jan. 1 bowl game.
More to come later. . . .

Let them go. We want guys that will work hard and fight for playing time. Every year good players are going to come in, but not all of them are going to earn playing time. If they want to leave that great. It give us room to bring better players that might earn playing time.

Is Coach Scott Lakatos running them off? CMR, get to the root of the problem!! Do not bury your head in the sand like you did with Def CO Willie Martinez and S&C Coach Dave Van Halenger!! Two coaches that were over their head in their positions or become outdated!! CMR take a look @ C Mike Bobo and C Rodney Garner!!

Inflated idea of playing time once they get to the SEC and what it takes to get on the field. I wish him well. Probably a good idea. Nobody wants to wait their turn any longer in this “me first, me always” attitude that is in our society nowadays!

Sander Comming, Sean William, Corey More, Connor Normon, JHC vs.FAU and Vandy
Full strength the rest of the way. The only game of concern may be Missouri because they are usually a pass happy team. Although I know they are tweaking their offense to suit their quarterback who rushed for over 900 yards, who btw is out this spring with a shoulder injury.

None of these guys saw the field last year. They are making personal life decisions. If you are unsatisfied in your career are you not entitled to move on to somewhere else. The only theme here is that none of the players had a true impact on UGA. If they fill like they can make an impact somewhere else then best wishes to them! This only going to help the program.

A lot of players come in with dreams of being a starter and getting drafted. All of a sudden they are juniors and third on the depth chart with more talented freshman coming in . A smaller school would offer the chance to get on the field and challenge for a starting position.

Georgia tide Fan, it is not the same at all. Your god Saban deliberately oversigns and has to run players off to get from 95+ after signing day down to the mandated maximum 85 players on scholarship at the beginning of fall practice. Georgia, on the other hand, chronically undersigns and doesn’t have a need to run players off to make the numbers work.

Well, if you leave because you can’t get on the field tells me that, you are not as good as you thought or there more better players ahead of you. So if you go to the next place and you don’t get playing time , then what? You quit playing? There is competition anywhere you go in life. Good luck guys.

Some players make it and some don’t! There’s no room for those who have the “quit” attitude anyway! Good luck to them! Chances are, they will be quitters in the future. They must not be as good as the starters or they would still be there! Go forward! GO DAWGS!! Actually, this is good news! UFA is not handing on to players who aren’t good enough to play or simply don’t want to play!

Something is fishy here.
The 1st four games there’ll be plenty of PT for guys in the 2ndary (due to suspensions), makes no sense to leave for PT, all you have to do is make your mark during that 4-game tryout at the start of next season and then make yourself irreplaceable to the coaching staff.
That makes much more sense that starting over somewhere else at a lower level since you have already used a RS year.

Before Grantham became defensive coordinator if was a policy that if you worked hard and was a DGD that you would be the starter your junior year and for sure your senior year even if their were better players on the bench but were only Freshmen or Sophomores as long as you were at least decent. When Grantham became Coordinator he made it real clear that the best will play and I am one who says it’s about time somebody used some common sense. I don’t care if the entire starting lineup are Freshmen the best players should always be out on the field. To he@@ with this entitlement mindset.
I think CMR is also being forced to play his best by McGarity after the 2010 disaster. McGarity isn’t saying play this guy because he is better , he is just putting pressure on Richt to win and THAT is forcing Richt to play the best all the time.
DEAS and Lott both apparently could care less about graduating or getting a degree , all they want is that easy money in Pro ball. Both are frequently beat by our opponents when they do play and are not entitled to a free ride into the NFL. They are slow and get out maneuvered a lot when they play. This is on them not our coaches. Some players have a hard time accepting the fact that they fit into the 90% of all college football players that end up with a job other than being a football player.

I think college football should go back to the way it originally was—no athletic scholarships. Just post a sign saying “Football practice starts on Monday. If you would like to try out, be there.” Then you wouldn’t have these prima-donnas that feel they should be guaranteed playing time. It’ll never happen…but I can dream, can’t I?

I agree with Lilburn dude,
If anybody thinks these kids are leaving for playing time are kidding themselves. Something obviously happened and Richt is kind enough not to publicize what they did. Signs point to a drug test failure but it could be something else. Either way they messed up and the coaches probably made it clear they should find somewhere else to continue there career. We’ll be ok. And why is nobody mentioning Jordan Jenkins stepping in for Alec Ogletree during his suspension? That kid is a beast, won’t surprise me if he’s starting game 1. Go Dawgs. All the Bama and Tech fans on here bashing need to get a life.

UGA fans should be very thankful. With all the suspensions and jumping ship, any other normal year the UGA program would be looking a some early season losses. However with the EASIEST schedule for the second year in a row( Mulligan II) one loss early is now seeable.
That UGA program is a mess, no matter how you spin it or turn it in UGA soft serve ice cream.

If a starter fails a drug test or gets arrested they get the minimum required suspension.
If someone down the depth chart does the same, they are kicked off the team or “decide to transfer,” i.e. run off. Similar to what Saban does, just freeing up the scholarships of those who aren’t contributing.

are saying they “know” they failed a drug test and are therefore transferring. Forgive me for not taking your word as gospel. Exactly how do you know this? The most logical answer is that these guys are upperclassmen and see little chance of getting significant playing time, so are going to a place where they can get that time. As a Georgia fan, I wish them well and will not be calling them names. Evidently, even with the depleted secondary for first few games, Deas had been surpassed by Connor Norman.
Richt now has the coaching staff that will get the job done, and the recruiting train is rolling. This year is shaping up as a monster class. Keep updated on LHB for the recruiting news, and enjoy Dog conversation there without trolls, namecallling and those jealous of UGA.

Seems like Richt is going to have the roster depth issues Muschamp had last year.
Is Richt and Grantham promising these players too much when they are recruiting them? The players that are suddenly transfering right and left seem like they are expecting to play at Georgia instead of earning playing time on the practice field. Just wondering.
P.S. Some of you (not all of you) Dawg fans who were ripping Muschamp earlier for some Florida players transferring (players who obviously did not fit the system or who had attitude issues), what do you say now? Again, just wondering.

These kids may get their false sense of entitlement from the top of the program. CMR and the football program at best was in a declining mode during the ‘09 and ‘10 seasons. CMR take advantage of a weak SEC west schedule and injuries to the Carolina team to back into the SEC east title.Richt takes advantage and gets a new 5year contract, the program is still in decline. If you don’t believe it wait until the western rotation changes and the Dawgs have to play Bama ,LSU or A&M. This years dream may turn into a nightmare as quick as a trip to Columbia Missouri ,much lees a trip to Columbia ,SC.The expectations of the fans and the easiest schedule in SEC history may turn on Richt quickly, but he still has his money an new contract,we are all suckers on that one.

Or choose which position they will play or when they will play? No, on all 3 counts. Neither will Meyer, or Muschamp, or Chizik, or Spurrier, or Petrino, or Miles. CMR has a discipline problem. 3 years ago, he let the program slip away from him. In order for him to get things back under control, he has to be something other than himself. The result: Players are either quitting or engaging in behavior which sets up the same scenario. The same coddled punks can’t take the new, stricter, policies. The new guys, like, IC, Mitchell, Conley, Marshall, etc., will accept these punishments because they came in with them. Not so with the “old” guys. So what I’m really saying is, it’s gonna take Richt another 3 years to get back control of his roster. Does Georgia have another 3 years to wait for some sign of stability? I’ll let the Richt lovers answer that question. Players know they can’t bullsh** Saban or Meyer when it comes to the football field. For some reason, players think they can bullsh** CMR. WHY?

Are we seeing a pattern? If they can’t stay out of jail or stay away from drugs, they quit! How much longer does UGA recruit losers? I have been a supporter of the dawgs since before my college days (Class of ‘72) but I am sick and tired of this! I hear my friends say it’s “win at any cost” so we gotta recruit these players who have no loyalty, no class and no intelligence. If we are keeping up with that philosophy then where are the championships? It has been a long time since 1980.
Sure UGA put together 10 wins in a row last year but did we beat anybody? The best team we beat was UF with a one-legged QB and he damn near beat us! We opened with 2 losses and ended with 2 losses. And that got CMR a new contract! OMG!
We are looking like the only title we’ll have anytime soon is “Losersville” , just like the Braves, the Falcons and the Hawks. Yes, we will win 8, 9 or maybe 10 games in 2012 but again, any wins over anyone rated or maybe even with a winning record?
The more things change the more they remain the same.

I guess these guys know more than their coaches. I guess they would rather play for a lesser team but want to be the big fish so bad they don’t care that they will be in a small pond. The same small pond that the NFL scouts sometimes overlook. Any kid who walks off the UGA team is getting very bad advice from someone that isn’t very sophisticated. Bottom line, good riddance. UGA is better off with less independent, “me, me” type players.

Hey-couldn’t help but notice but for some reason no comments are allowed on the Rambo piece from a day or so ago. Some Dawg fan at the AJC a little sensitive?
Most embarrassing quote in that story is from Rambos HS coach: “It’s stupid timing on the part of the University of Georgia if you ask me,” Ingram said. “I don’t know who’s policy it was to set that up after spring break but that’s crazy.”
Wow.
Maybe what explains a little about the problems at UGA, when you have “leaders” and “molders of men” like that enabling young men. “It’s UGA’s fault?!?” Great responsibility example there, Coach.

This is the AJ-C, where you post this, and this blog has the more different IP Addresses typing their opinions on college football from The SEC perspective than all the other UGA blogs combined. Doug, this post is like the ones from RICHT-0-PHILES saying that if we had not have lost to every team who made the top 10 and not lost to every team who made the top 25 all these years, then Mark Richt would have the best record in The SEC vs winning teams. Of course, he hasn’t which is why they don’t provide a URL Link to it. And, of course the city of Atlanta does exist, all 6 million of us. If Atlanta did not exist ? It does, doesn’t it ? Try to wish it away – like RICHT-O-PHILES try to wish away all the losses to the top teams.

“They lack of talent on the O.L. is a total joke. Yet, Richt and his terrible coaching staff all get raises. The problem at UGA is McGarity and the athletic board for giving Richt an extention and these average coaches raises. My GOD, how do you get a raise when you have proven over and over again that when you do get kids on campus, you can’t coach them up. That is the problem at UGA, and it will never change as long as Richt is the coach. He never, ever, holds players or coaches accountable for their performance, and that is a total lack of leadership. That sums up Richt’s whole career. Sorry UGA fans, but the truth hurts, and this guy has shown his total lack of ability to manage a program”

Please stop saying, “drug test the student body.” Students on academic scholarships would certainly lose them for drug related arrests, much less, sexual battery and felony theft. Most students are paying their own way, which these entitled football players are not. In that sense, they are state employees. Adams instituted the drug testing program to increase his stature in the academic world, not realizing it would jump up and bite his biggest source of revenue. That being said, Richt has always followed a double standard with player discipline. He will love and coddle someone like Crowell, but send a third stringer packing for a lesser offense. If Richt tried to develop some of these back up players, he might be surprised.
