DL Derrick Lott becomes latest roster casualty for Bulldogs

ATHENS — Defensive lineman Derrick Lott has become the latest roster casualty for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Lott, a 6-foot4, 303-pound junior from Kennesaw, decided to transfer “in order to obtain more playing time,” according to an announcement Friday night by head coach Mark Richt. No word on where Lott is headed but, if it is on the FBS level (formerly Division 1) he will have to sit out a year.

Lott

Lott

“Derrick and I met and he believes he will have opportunities for more playing time elsewhere,” Richt said in a statement. “We support him and will assist in any way possible during this process.”

Lott could not be reached for comment. He was probably attending a show.

Lott played in just five career games. He concludes his UGA career with 10 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner spoke glowingly of Lott’s progress and abilities earlier this week. Though a career backup, Lott had tripped over some bad fortune — he ripped open his leg in a scooter accident before this past season — and appeared to be coming into his own this spring. According to several accounts of recent interviews with Lott, he spoke excitedly and optimistically about the upcoming season and the prospects it held for him.

Lott’s decision comes on the heels of the news that two more defensive players — All-America safety Bacarri Rambo and star linebacker Alec Ogletree — had flunked drug tests and are going to be suspended for multiple games at the beginning of the season. Alan Ingram, Rambo’s coach at Seminole County High School, said yesterday that as many as five Georgia players had failed surprise post-spring-break drug screenings.

Two other defensive starters are also expected miss games due to arrests in the last two months. So that’s 10 players that have either left the Bulldogs, been dismissed from the team or are expected to miss games due to suspensions since the calendar flipped to 2012. The others are:

  • TB Carlton Thomas, Sr.: Three separate one-game suspensions in 2011. Quit team before spring practice
  • CB Branden Smith, Sr.: Faces suspension of at least one game for marijuana arrest.
  • CB Sanders Commings, Sr.: Gets 2-game suspension for simple battery, disorderly conduct conviction.
  • WR Sanford Seay, RFr.: Dismissed from team in January for rules violation.
  • DB Chris Sanders, So.: Dismissed from team in January for rules violation.
  • DB Nick Marshall, So.: Dismissed from team in January for rules violation.
  • CB Jordan Love, Jr.: Quit team shortly after season due to a lack of playing time.

I TRULY do not get it. Georgia is arguably the most rich state in terms of high school talent and fan support in the country.

Yet here we are, the 4th or 5th day in a row (it seems) reading news about players who do not feel the need to help UGA get where they should be on a regular basis.

Go home Derrick. I hope you get more “playing time” at Georgia State, since you were not good enough to earn it in Athens.

We have recruited defensive ends more than any other position, so this doesn’t worry me at all. Good riddance to the kid, if he failed a drug test, we don’t need him, if he didn’t want to compete and isn’t in it for Georgia, then we don’t need him. If it was other circumstances then I wish him the best of luck.

That is terrible news, but I fully trust Grantham to put together a stout defense just like he did all last season!

Is there really any doubt in anyone’s mind why UGA is a middle-tier program in the SEC as well as the national scene? Anyone that thinks they are a serious contender for a mythical NC, even with a cupcake schedule, is simply delusional. Dream Team indeed! Just asking, an a recent example, how disingenious, or stupid, is Rambo’s fabrication (lie)?

We may the only fan base in The South who have any fans at all who rush to make up flimsy excuses for all the bad press. We need to change our name to DISNEYdawgs.com because we read a guy tell you that he is a graduate of the Terry School of Business 1990, no doubt with Honors, that he hasn’t missed a game from 1990 to 2005 that he couldn’t count on his 2 hands both home and away, and still in reply to even that, you still have the unmitigated gall to call him a fan of some other team because he isn’t happy with all these arrests suspensions players kicked-off the team transfers out and BAD PRESS along with having lost 9 games in a row to teams who made the top 25 and having lost 7 games in a row to teams who made the top 10 all the way back to 2006, when the 2006 season was now this up-coming 2012 season seven (7) seasons ago -

yet, you admit you don’t even go to the games.

We have had a run of bad luck for sure. But if you look at Florida, they have had the same attrition rates. Probably Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn are about the same. These guys can play at lesser schools ie., Jax State, Troy, N. Alabama and Georgia Tech. You will have guys who can’t qualify academically, transfer for more playing time, have medical problems, etc.. It is the guys who make bonehead mistakes that really make me go bonkers.

Wait folks. Don’t get all bent out of shape. Derrick, i think has a good bit of talent, but he has yet to contribute in any meaningful way on the field and never will now. So the loss, yes hurts our roster numbers but not really playing time. If there are no more surprises or injuries UGA should be fine. Listen, my dad used to always tell me you can’t make a silk purse out of a sals ear. So lets move on. If it costs us it costs us. Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!!!!

I feel sorry for UGA fans, actually I feel sorry for GT fans also, this state deserves better than what our FB programs are giving us in recent years.

If you play a position like DL that rotates a lot of players in-and-out, then there’s no reason to transfer for more PT, something doesn’t add up here.

You’re already playing in the SEC, so you ‘re not going to transfer to a better conference, you can’t say that the coaching staff hosed you because at this point Garrison Smith is the better player, and it isn’t really close, rather than transfer there is always the possibility of playing the other DE opposite of G. Smith, with injuries you never know you could be the starter in a split-second.

The way this looks I doubt that a 2nd teamer in the Spring is transferring for more PT.

At the BCS level here in Ga. it seems as if both teams are frustrating as heck to their fans and make it really hard to pull for them.

I refuse to get upset by every update. There are still more than enough players to go 12-0 and play in the SECCG. Anything less than 11-1 is a failure. It is up to CMR to get them there. It is not my concern. Do I think he will…NO.

This is not surprising at all. Lott has not been better than any two deep at his position and he only has two years to try to impress the scouts enough to get a try out which he won’t get sitting on the bench.
Todd Grantham has made it real clear that the best players will be on the field and that means the entire game if they can hold out. The first and second string will get 90% of the reps. That doesn’t leave much playing for 3rd or 4TH team players.

I agree we should end up no worst than 13-1 and may go 14-0. We have no excuse. Our team is much better than last year. There are three key positions that will make that happen. Quarterback- Murray should have learned how not to give a game away. 2- Tailback- We must have an effective running game and 3- Field goal kicker Marshall Morgan has to be able to nail the 38 to 45 yard field goal under pressure every time so Richt will have confidence to use him.

UGA fans should not worry about players who decide to leave the team. It is the player`s life that is involved….not the fan`s life. Based on the comments in their post, it appears that many UGA fans believe that the players should live and play by their (the fans) standards. Fans are just and only “fans”. Leave the players alone and let them make their own decisions.

Buz 2012,

You are one piece of work. Your comments are all over the place and unfortunately, most are as random as your thought processes appear to be. Perhaps Lott could come and play for tech. At least you might have one defensive player that was coached properly that way. He was not making the grade after two years. He didn’t step up to the plate. UGA has better folks at that position. What don’t you understand about that. It is really pretty simple math. If you have 5 guys that are playing at a higher level, the coaches tend to put in the best players to play the game. That is how you win games. He did not develop as expected, but did you see the coaches at UGA, kick him to the curb. They kept working with the kid and HE came to the realization that there were too many in front of him to allow him to get a lot of playing time. When big and good athletic programs have a lot of quality players that tends to happen on occasion. Obviously, that will not happen very often at Tech. at least for the reason being they have too many quality players at one or more positions.

Mark Richt will just up and Quit
