DL Derrick Lott becomes latest roster casualty for Bulldogs

ATHENS — Defensive lineman Derrick Lott has become the latest roster casualty for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Lott, a 6-foot4, 303-pound junior from Kennesaw, decided to transfer “in order to obtain more playing time,” according to an announcement Friday night by head coach Mark Richt. No word on where Lott is headed but, if it is on the FBS level (formerly Division 1) he will have to sit out a year.

Lott

Lott

“Derrick and I met and he believes he will have opportunities for more playing time elsewhere,” Richt said in a statement. “We support him and will assist in any way possible during this process.”

Lott could not be reached for comment. He was probably attending a show.

Lott played in just five career games. He concludes his UGA career with 10 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner spoke glowingly of Lott’s progress and abilities earlier this week. Though a career backup, Lott had tripped over some bad fortune — he ripped open his leg in a scooter accident before this past season — and appeared to be coming into his own this spring. According to several accounts of recent interviews with Lott, he spoke excitedly and optimistically about the upcoming season and the prospects it held for him.

Lott’s decision comes on the heels of the news that two more defensive players — All-America safety Bacarri Rambo and star linebacker Alec Ogletree — had flunked drug tests and are going to be suspended for multiple games at the beginning of the season. Alan Ingram, Rambo’s coach at Seminole County High School, said yesterday that as many as five Georgia players had failed surprise post-spring-break drug screenings.

Two other defensive starters are also expected miss games due to arrests in the last two months. So that’s 10 players that have either left the Bulldogs, been dismissed from the team or are expected to miss games due to suspensions since the calendar flipped to 2012. The others are:

  • TB Carlton Thomas, Sr.: Three separate one-game suspensions in 2011. Quit team before spring practice
  • CB Branden Smith, Sr.: Faces suspension of at least one game for marijuana arrest.
  • CB Sanders Commings, Sr.: Gets 2-game suspension for simple battery, disorderly conduct conviction.
  • WR Sanford Seay, RFr.: Dismissed from team in January for rules violation.
  • DB Chris Sanders, So.: Dismissed from team in January for rules violation.
  • DB Nick Marshall, So.: Dismissed from team in January for rules violation.
  • CB Jordan Love, Jr.: Quit team shortly after season due to a lack of playing time.

This why BAMA can pay SABAN whatever they want to.

The University of Alabama’s athletic department was the most profitable in the nation during the 2010-2011 academic year, according to Department of Education data compiled by BusinessofCollegeSports.com.

The website broke down the net income (expenses subtracted from revenues) for both public and private universities and found that UA brought in a net income of $31.6 million in the 2010-2011 academic year, more than $20 million more than the second most profitable program in the Southeastern Conference, the University of Arkansas ($11.2 million).

Alabama was the only SEC school in the top ten of the most profitable list, with Arkansas, LSU, Florida and Georgia making up Nos. 11-14 on the list. Mississippi State came in at No. 18 on the list with a net income of $6.3 million, while Vanderbilt’s $5.7 million net income from athletics put them at No. 20 on the list.

Auburn ranked 26th in the nation for profitability, putting them eighth among SEC schools. The Tigers’ revenue of $103.9 million ranked them fourth in the SEC and among the top ten in the nation but their expenses, which topped $100 million, brought their net revenue down to just $3.4 million for the academic year.

Alabama led the nation in net income despite also being among the top ten biggest spenders among athletic departments. With expenses of $92.2 million, Alabama was No. 10 on the list of the biggest spenders in college sports. Alabama’s expenses ranked fifth among SEC schools with Florida ($112.9 million), Tennessee ($102.4 million), Auburn ($100.4 million) and LSU ($96 million) all out-spending Alabama.

@01HAWK sorry my friend but mediocrity is the norm for the majority of society today. It has been going on for years in business and now it has crossed over into some sports teams to include colleges. As long as the money keeps coming in why change things, the powers to be are getting theirs and could care less about the consumer in business and the fans in sports. As far as Alabama goes I feel we have a coach that is not going to stand for mediocrity at any level period.

A lot of humorous irony to this. Georgia has natural attrition like all schools do, year after year. Yet they stupidly put themselves in a bind because they consider over-signing, (the perfectly legal remedy designed to address attrition) to be immoral. The results? Idiotic, holier-than-thou Georgia fans demonizing other schools for being intelligent enough to deal with the problem. Fascinating.

I see that coach Richt is “cutting” players again. If they are buried on the depth chart he just moves em along to open up another scholarship spot. 5th player already this year to leave the team or be forced from the team to make another scholly available. Something has to be done about this.

In fact, Georgia brings in the most in terms of profits in SEC football because of their lower expenses relative to their revenues. Their profit was over $8 million more than the next highest school, Florida:

Football Profit
1 Univ. of Georgia $52,529,885.00
2 Univ. of Florida $44,258,193.00
3 Louisiana State Univ. $43,253,286.00
4 Univ. of Alabama $40,766,391.00
5 Univ. of Tennessee $39,236,601.00
6 Auburn Univ. $38,251,007.00
7 Univ. of South Carolina $35,471,948.00
8 Univ. of Arkansas $26,519,140.00
9 Univ. of Kentucky $17,984,848.00
10 Univ. of Mississippi $16,489,264

I’m sure it comes as no surprise to see perennial contenders like LSU, Florida and Alabama at the top. I was surprised to see, however, that Ole Miss brings in less than Vanderbilt.

Now let’s take a look at who the big spenders are:

Football Expenses
1 Univ. of Alabama $31,118,134.00
2 Auburn Univ. $27,911,713.00
3 Louisiana State Univ. $25,566,520.00
4 Univ. of Florida $24,457,557.00
5 Univ. of South Carolina $22,794,211.00
6 Univ. of Arkansas $22,005,104.00
7 Univ. of Georgia $18,308,654.00
8 Univ. of Tennessee $17,357,345.00
9 Vanderbilt Univ. $14,152,061.00
10 Univ. of Kentucky $13,905,724.00

01Hawk,

Going to be funny watching the dawgs play with 60 or 70 schollarship players rather than the optimum 85 because they were preaching some crap all along about oversigning. Never occurred to them to think about those years when there will be natural attrition and they will lose more players than normal. Truly ironical.

You’re right though. Dawg players just don’t respect Richt. They just don’t and the inmates have been running the asylum over at UGA for some time now.

Georgia isn’t just #1 in the SEC in terms of profits, they’re #2 in the entire country behind Texas.

If you do the math, Georgia is only putting 25.8% of their football revenue back into the program. Meanwhile, the 2009 National Champion, Alabama, was putting 43.3% back into their program, and the 2010 National Champion, Auburn, invested 42.2 percent. Is there perhaps a correlation between this and results on the field? Georgia went 7-5 in 2009 and just 6-6 in 2010. Comparing Georgia to Texas, who is the only school with bigger profits from football, the two are spending at about the same rate, with Texas putting 26.7% back into their program. However, Texas is spending $25,112,331 to Georgia’s $18,308,654.

I’ll also note that Georgia is second in the SEC in terms of overall athletic department profit at $11.7 million. Alabama, who posted the highest profits for its athletic department, is an outlier with a $44 million profit (more to come on that in a later post). Ole Miss presented a balanced sheet, so they show no profit in the athletic department. However, the other 10 schools posted an average profit of $5.4 million, putting Georgia’s athletic department at more than twice the average profit.

Maybe the article is telling the truth. He is transferring cause he wasn’t getting playing time. I mean UGA is pretty stacked at DL/DE. He didn’t count on a bunch of highly recruited 5-stars to be recruited at his position. This guy went to my high school and he is a hell of a player and a hard worker but since the scooter wreck and other injuries he can’t play and is transferring out. That Forbes article was from stats. from 2009. Things did change for 2010 and 2011 and it also was reported differently depending on what publication you chose to read.
Also your criticism of UGAgrad71 was a little hypocritical wasn’t it. I have a lot of friends in Florida that are all Gator and they ask the same question. The problem with asking a question like that is it sounds prejudice. So if the documented stats. prove that UGAgrad71 is 100% correct then is it okay to even bring it up, because if you do, it makes you out to be prejudice. If you don’t bring it up then you avoid sounding prejudice but facts are facts and should it be ignored.

You want players to walk the straight-and-narrow??? Then kick the superstars off the team too when they commit ILLEGAL acts!

If the kid(s) know they’ll lose their scholarship and be kicked out of school if they get caught doing drugs or fail drug tests, or are convicted of other crimes (battery & disorderly conduct) it’ll darn sure curtail the problem to a great extent, guaranteed!

The other issues about guys leaving or getting in trouble is a big problem. What we all need to understand is, UGA has a very large school of Communication. It is for this reason UGA will always have problems AL, TN, FL, KY, AU, SC, etc. will NEVER contend with. UGA is like a self-eating organism. The students who are in the school are DYING to find a story a to write or put in the hands of the AJC, Jacksonville SunTimes, etc. Schools like AL, TN, FL all hide their problems. We don’t hear as much from them in terms of issues, arrests, drugs because the other schools are more adept in hiding them. UGA will always have the issue of kids being caught due to the school’s Communications students.
