Georgia coach Mark Richt sidesteps questions on player suspensions

ATHENS — Georgia coach Mark Richt didn’t shed much light on the Bulldogs’ suspension situation when he addressed an unusually large media contingent at the end of Thursday’s practice. In fact, he didn’t as much as flick on a flashlight.

Richt would not even confirm that there are new suspensions despite numerous report Thursday that at least two of Georgia’s defensive stars have run afoul of the athletic association’s drug policy.

“I can’t confirm anything,” Richt told more than a dozen reporters and two Atlanta television news crews. “I’m just going to be waiting for us to go through our process. When there’s something to report, I’ll report it to everybody.”

Earlier Thursday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was able to confirm that All-America safety Bacarri Rambo is facing a four-game suspension for failing a UGA-administered drug test this week. Rambo’s high school coach, Alan Ingram of Seminole County, said it was Rambo’s second violation of Georgia’s drug policy regarding marijuana, which according to the student-athlete handbook calls for a 30 percent suspension from the total number of competition dates. Rambo plans to appeal the suspension through UGA’s appeals process.

Ingram said he understands from his conversations with Rambo that junior linebacker Alec Ogletree also failed a similar drug test and is facing a similar length of suspension. In fact, Ingram said he believes as many as five UGA players failed drug screenings that were administered shortly after spring break.

But Richt refused to confirm or deny any of it. Before he entered the interview room on the second floor of Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, UGA sports communication personnel passed out a brief written statement from him.

It read: “There is a process we follow regarding team guidelines and policies. I cannot make many comment until that process has run its course.”

Afterward, when Richt was asked questions regarding suspensions or player behavior in general, he referred to the statement.

“Don’t know if you’ve seen our handout but you might want to read it because you’ll hear it repeated again,” he said, smiling.

Asked exactly what process to which he was referring, Richt said:  “Just, we’ve got our guidelines, we’ve got our policies. There are certain things we’ve got to do when we’re taking care of business and that’s what we’re talking about.”

Asked how he felt about handling player behavior issues, he said, “I don’t like distractions, that’s for sure.”

More details to come. . . .

UGA ignores a lot of good talent for undisciplined and problematic kids! The repeditive suspensions by the same players are a serious signal that something is wrong. If you think that UGA can win with these guys your crazy! It takes far more than talent to win a BCS. Keep dreaming UGA your dreams will end soon in Columbia, S.C.

If the coaches are serious about building a “TEAM”, Then they must make the whole team pay for the mistakes of a few. If they start doing this then I guarantee you there would be less problems. Nothing strikes harder on a person than the peer pressure he or she would feel from this action.

If every team in the SEC drug tested their players after spring break their would be a bunch of 3rd and 4th string players playing.

Really now...

BG,

The problem with that thinking is that this news leaked early by some people close to the program. The same thing would be sure to happen with other SEC schools in similar situations. If other SEC schools had the same number of problems at the same rate, there’s no way they could cover all of them up without someone getting wind of it.

Keep thinking that to make yourself feel better. This has been going on for several years at an alarming rate and the kool-aid drinkers are still patting UGA on the back and thinking they took the moral high-road.

Richt has two options: Make an example of all the ones screwing up, or avoid recruiting many of those “special admits”.

its always something w/this team and players. What looked like a promising season has taken a severe swerve south. bad enough to lose 2 starting CB’s f.oir 1st 2 games now lose 2 def standouts for multiple games. Not to mention the 2 def kids kicked off the team earlier this year. If the season ends up going down the tubes don’t blame the coaches just lay it on the dumb a$$e$ that got suspended. Geeez.

I wish the violators could fathom how much damage they do to the other team members, coaches, and fans. All the past hard work of their teammates and coaches wasted because of their self centered decisions. Now their teammates and coaches have to double their efforts, because of these knuckleheads. I was planning to take my family to the Missouri game, now I’m re-thinking the trip. And for a high school coach to complain about conducting drug tests after spring break? Is he suggesting that vacations or other periods of time be set aside for players to abuse alcohol and drugs, jepardizing their health, the health of others, their teammates and coaches goals? .

She makes me feel alright.
She makes my heart sing.

And when I’m feeling low,
She comes as no surprise.
Turns me on with her love.
Takes me to paradise.

Do you love me Mary Jane?
Yeah. Whoa-oh-oh.
Do ya? Do ya? Do ya?
Now do you think you love me Mary Jane.
Don’t you play no games.

I love her just the same.
I love her, Mary baby, just the same.
The woman plays no games.
Now, now, now.

I’m in love with Mary Jane.
I’m not the only one.
If Mary wanna play around,
I let her have her fun.
She’s not the kind of girl
that you can just tie down.
She likes to spread her love
and turn your head around.

Yeahhhhh! Ooowoooo.
Oh baby. Oh baby. Hit me.
Whoah, Mary. Only love.
I love you, yeah. Whooo!
Something until we give it now, lovey-dove.
Uh-huh. Wow, baby!

Tired of the crap! but I do believe Rambo, he could be making a sizable income in the NFL. If he was like Janoris Jenkins and just couldnt put the smoke down, he wouldve been better off leaving UGA, however this sounds like a simple mistake esp if 5 players who havent has issues before are involved

Besides the first four games should be cake walks….yes Mizzou cake walk, QB coming off shoulder surgery plus a pourous defense is not a good combo.
ILB is an easy position to fill out with our depth…hello Brandon Burrows! Amarlo stepped up last yr and is powerful downhill and is a yr stronger/faster, C.Robinson is a Sr leader.
The bigger void is safety but Corey Moore is good enough to go and w Deas and Cootie(big hitter) platooning behind him we will be fine
If we cant be 4-0 after Buff, Mizzou, FAU, or Vandy regardless of personnel, UGA has a lot bigger issues than 4 players.
P.S. Swann should start over B.Smith anyway and B.Smith should be moved to offense

McGarity screwed up big time giving the preacher a 5 YEAR EXTENSION. A 2 or 3 year might have been acceptable. This extension has put the program back 5 years. Richt’s teams have no discipline on or off the field. This kind of stuff goes on and on and on and on. You don’t hear about Sabin’s teams having these kinds of problems. Obviously, McGarity did not learn from his mentor Foley. Foley would not put up with this kind of crap from his coaches, but Richt continues to survive mediocre seasons and criminal behavior from players. Foley wants his teams to be great, not average. I had hope that McGarity would oversee a top notch athletic department, but I guess I was wrong.

The dielema here is simple if you boot them from the team as they should be some lower division team will sign and let them continue to play (see Janoris Jenkins). Unless these kids are no longer to participate in their chosen sport at any level they will never learn. Allow them to continue their education but no longer allow them to play at any level this to include NAIA, it is a priveledge to get to participate at intercolliegiate athletics.

I don’t believe the “I accidentally ate some brownies.” What I really love is rambo’s friend ingram saying that it is dumb to test after spring break, if you’re friend would put the weed down it would be the end of story. Loved BR’s story. I woke up hungry a gobbled a few brownies only realizing what they were when the buzz set in.

OK, who eats brownies for breakfast? Who brings brownies on spring break? Guessing there was a little chit chat about the brownies beforehand. Nice friends though to bring weed brownies on the trip, leave them laying around and not tell anyone( highly doubtful). Such good friends. Did they not know what was at stake for their pal BR?

Then you have BR who was suspended last year because he was with someone caught with a joint. Do you think it might have crossed his mind to make sure he wasn’t an innocent bystander
again?

The story doesn’t add up. At worst it’s a straight lie. At best he’s not too bright. it should’ve been important enough to set his buddies straight before the trip. If it’s important enough, you’d make sure you weren’t anywhere near this again.

March 29th, 2012

We have now had two presidents who have admitted to trying or using drugs as young adults or while in college. Any school that is stupid enough to drug test kids after spring break should have the AD’s head examined. McGarity and Richt really screwed this up and whoever is in charge of scheduling the tests should be fired. It would be like testing any other college kid that went on spring break or to a concert festival for the weekend. Why not test all kids receiving the hope scholarship or any other academic scholarship.

Now to the players. At some point in your life, the “it wasn’t me defense” does not hold water. Even if you are not smoking or eating drugs, you are keeping company with those that do. Eventually those that do will drag you down. You just as easliy could have had police officers in your hotel room checkling out a noise violation and found the drugs. But coach, they weren’t mine.

Except now there’s a lot more at stake with a promising season and impending NFL riches. If it was me, I’d be hyper -sensitive to staying out of trouble, hanging out with low-risk people and not blowing it. But then again I guess that would make sense…tired of this crap year after year. It appears “Coach Richt” is trying to tighten things up, apparently it’s not working, at least “short term”. If we changed coaches we would be having the same problems more than likely “short term”. It took Saban two years to weed out the problems and change the attitudes.

I wrote a few days back that Richt doesn’t “command respect” and was told that respect had to be earned, not commanded. I guess after yet another round of problems my question is “why, as a coach, would I have to earn the respect of a teenager. THWR, either you want to be here or you don’t.

Are UGA, and it’s supporters, willing to gamble that the same coach who allowed this loose, undisciplined, environment to permeate the program will be able to shed his skin and morph into the kind of coach that can clean it up. My money says he can’t. His players don’t respect themselves, the program, the coach, their teamates, or the fans. Everyone has the need to belong to something greater than themselves, something they are willing to sacrifice for. They just need someone or something to provide it for them. Richts time should be up in Athens, the contract hasn’t been signed yet.

Judging by the number of people criticizing the university, I could understand why he thinks this way.

This isn’t Coach Richt’s fault. This isn’t McGarity’s fault. This is squarely on the shoulders of these players who know the rules, know they will be tested, and choose to screw up anyway. I have no problem with them random testing these guys the week after spring break. The only problem I have is that these kids don’t have more respect for the opportunities they are afforded because they can run fast and hit hard. Getting a free education for playing a sport is a privilege that ought to be motivation enough for staying out of trouble. Instead people continue to make excuses for these ingrates and blame everyone except the kids themselves. No wonder they don’t have any concept of taking responsibility for themselves.

What does it take to unite a group of people to a common cause? A Leader. Assuming Jarvis Jones isn’t among those who tested positive, how do you think he feels, after giving up a chance to go pro, to come back and be part of something special. I would be questioning myself at this point, along with my teamates.
We need a leader that can unite this team, a leader who draws a line in the sand, and says, if you want to be a part of this “team”, you need to commit. If you fall off the track, you become a casualty. We move on without you. You whiny everyone smokes pot bunch just proliferate the problem. I once worked for a company, when I was young, that tested us for drugs and alcohol. There was a “zero tolerance” policy. I respected that policy as did most. You are exactly correct but it seems that this particular blog is overloaded with FOOLS who don’t have a clue as to what is going on.

CMR wasn’t hired to ride herd 24/7 on almost 100 mostly teenagers nor should any sane person expect him to do so.

Fortunately the people that really matter don’t expect him to do so. UGA has much more stringent rules and requirements THAN ANY OTHER COLLEGE in the nation.

You either support the intent of these rules and regulations, you scream for more leniency from UGA or, if you are 100% FOOL with a single digit IQ, you blame CMR and want him fired.

@ Mobile Dawg:

You seem to be one of the geniuses with the single digit IQ but even with that handicap you should know that it is exremely unlikely that ANY coach in the nation has “Babysitting teenagers, etc.” in his/her contract. His job is to teach young people the game of football and when you alert them shortly before they go on Spring Break that TESTING WILL BE DONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU RETURN how much more can you ask of the HC???

How would YOU deal with that as the HC???

You and your ilk have no idea what a HC job is on any level and I really don’t like to use the term “FOOL” but it seems to be most fitting in the case of you and your ilk..

Don’t feel so all alone because those yelling about the stupidity of testing right after spring break and apparently are opposed to any disciplinary measures are only a half step behind you.

On top of all that it is just a frigging game and you people would have the National Guard out to MAKE those in the Decision Making Roles change everything to suit your point of view no matter how stupid it may be.

As evidenced by this blog you have about 45% wanting to fire CMR and 45% screaming that “UGA should NOT have tested right after Spring Break” and the remaining 10% , which includes a pretty good number of NON-UGA fans, trying to calm the waters by saying it is not CMR’s job and the players should be held accountable.

CMR’s “bosses” make the rules. CMR executes the rules when he suspends or kicks players off the team.
CMR is the HC but he is the Middle Man when it comes to discipline. He has no other choice because enforcing UGA policies and rules is a part of CMR’s job. Not role call and bed check or following 75 to 100 young men all over the world to see if they are abiding by the UGA rules and policies!!!

It ain’t that damn complicated……………………for those of average IQ!!!!

This is not your fathers bulldogs. Reality is other programs have the same type of kids. They just know when to test them. Georgia will have to deices that they are going to compete with the big boys or we are gonna have a a warm and fuzzy environment. This is what many of these kids come from. You have to have some one who knows how to handle them I quit sending my money to Athens several years ago. My family had been athletic donors since the 60s. No more.Georgia is a good old boy program. Coach Richt is a great guy but his ability to maintain control of a ship in storm has to be questioned. The whole program has to be questioned. Getting the top recruits each year means nothing, when you do nothing with them, same goes for Andy Landers who’s time has passed him by. I had plans to go to Mizzou to see the dogs no players means no defense. I wonder what the buyout out will be in two years for the new contract.

Yes…I will talk discipline with you…..

FACT: Janoris Jenkins and Chris Martin smoked weed and did not follow guidlines set forth by Muschamp after he arrived. Jenkins failed a school administered test and was then dismissed by Muschamp…..he had already been arrested twice under Meyer’s leadership. Martin was arressted once for weed and was asked to leave the program (Mushcamp let him leave for “family” reasons). by Muschamp because of his bad influence on the team. Jenkins was also a bad influence. Both were outstanding football players and vitial to Muschamp’s first year at Florida….but he said goodbye to both of them because neither met Muschamp’s new expectations for Florida football players. Georgia’s current issues are directly related to Richt’s previously relaxed discipline with his players….and seemingly those expectations have not been increased based on his handling of players recently….and their continued lack of respect for Richt and the Georgia football program. But you can deny all you want. Georgia has a big problem in their football program….and if not fixed fast…Richt and Grantham will not be around much longer. Muschamp is going to be around Florida for a long time based on his approach to discipline and player expectations.

I have neither the time, nor the desire to chronicle all of Mark Richts failures as a Leader and Coach of this football team over the years. The record speaks for itself, on and off the field. You, and the other blind supporters of this program are the very reason we’re mired in mediocrity. It is just a game, however at the root of it all it just mirrors what’s going on in the bigger picture of the state of our union now. Do you choose to sit back and ignore that too? To many soft, caring people in the world that think it’s their job to take care of everyone who chooses to make bad decisions and not take care of themselves.

I think the players the Richt is recruiting are uncoachable. You take a player who is in to the self first team second and they start second guessing the coaches because it is too much trouble to do it right on and off the field. This is the problem with Crowell who is obviously out of shape, never got better, was the direct reason for three losses last year. These kids see him acting like a two year old they act like one. Coach got my back to them means smoking weed, not playing football. There is a reason why guys like Grantham never end up being head coaches and Richt can’t control the guy, he was his fourth pick for a reason too. Richt came out of two programs that were historic for not being able to control players, FSU and Miami, that is all he ever has known. There is a picture forming here. In the day you could have unlimited scholarships and the players had to compete for a job. Now they show up because you have promised them a start and have no one behind them pushing for a position. Let’s see…85 scholarship players…4 or 5 involved in legal issues, some involving drugs…hmmm…is this acceptable? No, but, it is better than any sampling of the general population. Do they deserve to get the punishment meted out? Def. Is it Richt’s fault? How about it’s the players’ fault for making poor choices. Accountability is a bear, but a necessary one if you want kids to become adults. Blame Richt for the problems on the field, but he can hardly be held accountable for what kids do while on spring break. Discipline at UGA Athletic Dept. isn’t the problem…Discipline before they get there likely is.

It would be scary to see what some of you on here do for a living. You have such perfect lives to feel so good about judging 18-22 year old kids.

I hate this just as much as the next Alumnus. However, why do some of you on here every time something goes wrong has to start knocking CMR’s faith? That’s clueless. It’s like you’re saying, “hey, if you’re a Christian everything should be perfect and you can’t do no wrong.” Please, some of you judgemental people need to go out and buy a life.
We all fall short of the glory of God. Stop judging others and get the plank out of your own eye.

What to do in this situation? It’s a tough position to be under. However, I have to agree with some of you on here. If you are a1st time offender of team violation, a suspension is correct actions. A 2nd time offender, in my opinion, is telling the team I don’t care about the team just my own well being and that person should be kicked off the team IF there is no doubt about his actions. Just an opinion, not a judgement. I hope these kids can learn from this and get it together.

UFA was favored to win the game in Knoxville but Kiffin had the Vols ready to play. Chuck Cavalares commented about the Dawgs. He said he would never worry about the Dawgs because they are just plain “DUMB”! Well, ain’t that the truth!! CMR is handling it the right way! The engaging players should have to run until they throw up! I love the Dawgs, I just wish the players did! This is sickening! This is the last straw. I’m an alumni of UGA, Class of 73, and have been a die-hard fan of the Bulldogs since I was 12. I’ve only missed one GA/FL game in over 40 yrs. I just can’t take this same ole crap every year. We start every season with multiple players on suspension. Richt apparently commands no respect whatsoever from his players. He is a straw leader. His players are there for themselves only. There is no team spirit at all. Richt uses his position to promote his religion and his friends (i.e., Willie and Booboo). So long as we win 7 or 8 games every year and beat up on the patsies and the mediocre SEC teams, he is set for life and knows it. He has no heart for winning football, just winning souls to Jesus. Any coach worth a dime could win 7 or 8 games a year with the talent that falls into Richt’s lap every year. Face it folks, UGA is and will continue to be a middle of the pack SEC team until Richt is gone. There is absolutely no hope that we can win consistently at a championship level with this leadership. Oh, he will luck up and win the SEC East on occasion, like last year, and maybe even an SEC Championship once in a blue moon as a result of the natural talent that permeates the program year in and year out but forget about Richt actually coaching up a team and making a serious run of championship seasons. He had some fire in his belly for his first few years and it showed but since then he has done nothing with the abundant talent and weath of resources he has been blessed with every year. Face it folks, the preacher man is basking in the ever overflowing collection plate that is UGA athletics and could care less if we ever win big so long as the contract extensions keep coming. I’m done with the Dawgs.

Dang, the Richt-fan-boys-club is out in force, defending yet again their hero, blaming the players, blaming the AD, blaming anybody but the one who is in charge – your IDOLl – Mark Richt.

Richt is the one who, over 11 years, has created this culture at UGA. This is on him, or WTH are we paying him $ Millions for? To stand on the sideline and fix his hair?

Our players have no concept of accountability, or leadership. Richt treats them like boys – a “signature hug” when they committ – and damn if they don’t behave like boys. On and on it goes. Year after year.

You think Paul Johnson hugs his signees? Saban? Spurrier? I bet they shake hands like men.

Whatever. Your IDOL is here for 5 more years, so we can count on 5 more years of embarrassment on and off the field.

“Angry…fed up…embarrassed…disappointed…did I mention ANGRY?! That’s how I feel about the Georgia Bulldogs right now. It appears to me that Mark Richt is conflicted. If he wants a program grounded by kids with good character, then he should recruit only those players and win as many games as he can, but be proud in doing so in what’s left of his tenure at Georgia. If, as seems to be the case, he decides to recruit based upon talent more than character in order to compete on a higher level, then he should not administer drug tests the day the players get back from spring break. You see, you can’t have it both ways. You are only inviting trouble when you try. You let these guys on your team…no, you let these guys become team leaders…then you suffer the consequences of self-policing when you KNOW you are going to find violations. I’d like to know how many SEC powerhouses decided it would be a good idea to randomly drug test their “student athletes” the day after spring break. Coach Richt’s seat should be getting warm again. I don’t want to hear any more excuses. We aren’t winning and we are also a laughing stock…the worst of both worlds. It is utterly indefensible. If Richt wants to get the team’s attention and prove that he has the courage of his convictions, he should kick Rambo and Ogletree off the team because they have both been suspended previously, regardless of how great each is as a playmaker. Yeah, right! I’ve got a better chance of winning the $500,000,000 Mega Millions lottery tonight. The players that we have remaining will have to work very hard to avoid yet another season of missed opportunity. Nick Saban knows that unrelenting discipline is the key to success in SEC football. Why does UGA administer excessive drug and substance testing outside of what is mandated by the NCAA & the SEC?

What benefit does this excessive testing provide? Please discuss:

College is about expanding boundaries and learning new ways to think and the exploration of the known and unknown, it is an environment that most students experiment in many creative ways, recreational drug use being one of these.

What possible benefit could a prison style drug testing policy and snitch program provide the university with I ask yet again?

Richt is a state employee. Scholarship players are receiving a big dollar benefit from the state and the university. This makes players very different from the kid whose parents are footing the bill. Criminal arrests are grounds for removal from Federal Financial Aid as well as most academic scholarships. Richt facilitates bad behavior by his absence of recruiting standards and his Bobby Bowden approach to discipline. Richt will never win a national championship or a conference championship. I really hate to see this type of thing happening. These players know the impact this will have on the season. They owe an apology to first, Their teammates, Coach Grantham and Coach Richt and their family.

I like the fact that Georgia has the toughest standards in the SEC and my hats off to the school, the A.D. and coaches and never, ever change the policy. Just let the recruits who want to come to Georgia know this up-front. I can’t believe that these players, as good as they are, are causing questions to be raised and especially from coaches and teams in the NFL ? That does not sound like a school administered test, sounds like the young man was caught with ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES on him by the POLICE and was ARRESTED. And you do not bring up Martin, who also did not fail a school administered drug screening, but was ARRESTED for ILLEGAL POSSESSION in the SAME car that Jenkins was arrested in earlier. Was there a cover-up to try and protect the 5-star transfer from Colorado. Was Martin in the car with Jenkins and given a free pass under Florida’s “very strict” program. The only way a UF fan can ever talk about discipline and their football program is AFTER the stop allowing 5 failures of a NON-ARREST drug screen and start utilizing the same transparency that the University of Georgia employs . The only thing you have proven in your statements above is that the University of Florida views CRIMINAL ACTIONS the same was Georgia views non-criminal administrative actions.

March 30th, 2012

With no argument, this is indeed Richt’s fault. People here are saying its the type of recruit that he’s bringing in. That’s a cop-out. All the big schools are going for most of what Georgia’s going for. One must put a fine line in 2 equations that result in the same answer…equation 1: what’s responsible for making the player a successful player “on and off the field” (as coach Richt defines it)? Equation 2: what’s responsible for making a player more talented each time he steps on the field, allowing him to progress during each game and season until he graduates?
Answer: Character Development
The only person responsible for developing these players is Mark Richt. Why? Because the majority of his recruits are being persuaded to come to Georgia because of football, not because of the Academics. Who’s doing the persuading? The coach. Who’s responsible for making sure there’s a smooth transition between where that player came from and where that player’s going? The coach. If it weren’t the coach, then why do we praise him for constantly preaching his intentions to make these individuals “good men, on and off the field”? Look beyond yourselves here and realize that the analysis is simple. A great man, but far from a great coach; because he preaches one thing, but his players don’t respect his philosophy. Who’s philosophy? The “coach’s” philosophy.

Here we go again with Mark Richt. It’s just one thing after the other with this idiot. If he isn’t killing the team by having willie martinez and mike bobo, he’s suspending players 5 months before the season starts. He is the biggest joke I have ever seen as a coach. So now the rest of the team and all the fans have to suffer because of his “morals”. Funny how his morals got lowered a bit last year when he was worried about his job. There are different ways to punish these KIDS. I can only hope that Grantham doesn’t leave before he gets his shot at HC.

Chip,

From what I’ve heard this morning, Rambo, ‘Tree, Jenkins, Swann, M. Mitchell, I. Crowell and T. King have all failed drug test and facing between 2-4game suspensions depending on if it’s their 1st or 2nd offense….

I hope these “BOYS” had a great spring break b/c they have just let down all of their teammates. Yes, us fans, season ticket holders, contributors, families and coaches are hurt by this, but the teammates they battle with and play with on the field is who is going to be hurt the most by these choices they made over SB.

“Here we go again, right? Two more ‘Dogs are reportedly suspended to start the season. Must say, I hear a lot about this from fans and constantly from former players. The stance: Quit signing all these spoiled 5-star guys, who can’t do right…and start recruiting a better quality student-athlete. Hear it all the time.

It’s embarrassing to the University of Georgia…domestic violence, simple battery, drug possession, stealing from teammates, posing for sexually explicit photographs. What will next week bring? Perhaps it’s time to change the recruiting philosophy. Start signing a more disciplined, committed brand of athlete. Go get the 3-star rated guy, who would be honored to play football at Georgia and do it the right way. That’s what I keep hearing. Let the 5-star player, who has the red flags, go somewhere else. A.D. Greg McGarity has to be tired of this continuing storyline. Wonder what he’s thinking? It’s got to be frustrating for the coaching staff too. Do they have a big board, in the meeting room, that lists all of the suspended players? Does Coach Richt set aside time each day to meet with the players who get in trouble? When the cell phone rings, does Coach Richt immediately wonder who got arrested now?

Might be time to clean house. Forget about the 2-game suspensions, cut loose the guys that can’t do right, and go get a better student-athlete. Might fall from 10-2 to 8-4, but at least it’ll be a team that you can be proud of. Can’t be proud of this stuff, right? ”

What surprises me the most about the story is that we actually susupended our starting BD for a huge opener game, because a passenger in his car commited a minor infraction. THEN we test the guys the day after spring break. Who does that? either one?

It seems to me that we self impose penalties on ourselves that nobody else does, then if we give ourselves black eyes because ot it, we double down and make it worse.

This has nothing to do with discipline or respect. This is a policy problem. Don’t tell me our guys (the same one that EVERYBODY recruited and would have signed) are any different than the rest of the conference. But do tell me what other SEC football program are taking these type of measures to shoot themselves in the foot and not just handling it behind closed doors.

Its simply impossible for me to imagine that we can win a championship under the current regime. And by “regime” I mean everybody. The coaches and the players. Bobo is simply in over his head. Everyone knows that. The players do not have the heart and desire of a champion. The astronomical arrests and suspensions prove it. Its really bad when supposed “leaders” like Rambo and Ogletree are toking it up on spring break. We have no true leaders on this team. Everyone is in it for themselves. Its all about having a good time and the NFL. Someone said it the other day on these blogs: Our team just sits around with its thumb up its butt waiting for something great to happen while teams like LSU and Bama MAKE IT HAPPEN. That’s the honest truth.

Expect more of the same in 2012. This team doesn’t have the guts to win the big ones. If they have a problem with that they can prove me wrong. That’s why they play the games. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Thanks.

If I had worked my tail off during weight training and mat drills and practice and meetings and these knuckleheads keep getting suspended year after year, it would definitely affect my feelings about the team concept. If you can’t trust your fellow teammates to work hard and be at your side when it’s time to go to war, it has to affect the mental aspect of your game. Somebody on the team needs to go off on these wayward teammates and address this problem during a no holds barred team meeting. If the suspensions continue without correction we can recruit the best and still never achieve our championship aspirations because our team will never all be on the same page. Perhaps that has been the problem in Athens for the last several years.

AltamahaDawg, that misses the point. Our policy is what it is. If its strict the players should know its strict and they should know that if they want to smoke a little weed on spring break that there could be consequences for them and the entire team. Are you seriously suggesting that its too much to ask these guys to stay away from the ganja? Is that what it has come to? Give me a freaking break. The fact that they proceed with this behavior anyway is very selfish and undisciplined. We need to stop making excuses for them like we’re Tech fans or something.

And watch 2012 come and go as yet another year devoid of a championship. I’m telling you people right here and now that you need to get your heads out of the clouds. It ain’t going to happen.

I originally had predicted a 11-1 season for the Dawgs and now I am predicting 7-5.

I also predict this will be the worst off-season in the history for UGA. By that I mean suspensions and arrests… we are already on a torrid pace and it’s only March.

Everything the trolls throw at us today we deserve. I am embarrassed to be a Dawg.

Stephen A.Dogg: Suspensions hurt the team. Ask LSU.

March 30th, 2012
10:40 am

Yeah, LSU made it to the BCS National title game after multiple suspensions during the season. They were a very talented team with decent coaching and they went very far, but the suspensions did hurt them in the end. Their starting QB Jordan Jefferson needed every rep he could get because he was such a poor passer and he was totally exposed in the SECCG and BCS title game. He missed multiple games while his backup, Jarrett Lee stepped up and did a good job of leading the team up until the Bama game. To make a long story short, LSU was embarrased by Bama 21-0. That early season suspension of QB Jefferson came back to bite the Tigers and Jefferson has almost zero value in the NFL as a QB.

If Bobo is “in over his head”, then why has’t Richt as a head coach done something about it ? Don’t give me that crap about he is so loyal to a fault to his assistants. Richt should the loyal to UGA, his employers by doing his job to hire the best assistants he can. But Bobo is NOT the real OC at Georgia, Richt is still in total control of the offense. Bobo is the fall guy and Aaron Murray will start not because he’s the best QB, but because Richt wants him to start. Richt said Malcom Mitchell would practice at DB this spring no matter what Bobo (who opposed the move) has to say. Richt is the offensive shot caller at UGA. Grantham has more control over the defense because Richt knows very little on that side of the ball. The suspensions are hurting Georgia in many ways. This mediocre team already had offensive problems and now the suspensions are weakening the team even more.

AltamahaDawg,
That is actually a pretty easy one. If only 1 test occurs in a year, the probablity is 1.9% of it occuring within one week of an event. If they drug test say once a month, which is more likely, it jumps to ~22%. It is true, it could be a targeted test on known offenders, but if you are playing by the rules you should be able to pass a drug test 100% of the time. Its a gamble to try and cheat the system, this time he lost. Personally, I think it should be legal and taxed like other vices putting the money to good use, but the players are aware of the rules when they sign to play. If they are not aware of the rules and consequences it falls on the administration and some personal responsibility.

Moreover , why would he? And I should have clarified…….I did not mean that as a dig at Saban in the first place. I have no doubt he is not a guy you want to wiss off. I am simply stating that Alabama has a completely different set of stated penalties for the same offense. As I recall, the firt time in zero, (and I would doubt you ever hear a word about it, rightfully so) and the second time is coaches decision to suspend, if at all. That’s all automatic at UGA for all sports.

1001001, you can look back and see my position on it repeatedly is that the player KNOW the rules, and should not come as a surprise to them. Maybe they need to consider signing someplace else. I don’t defend them. My point is this. We as a football program need to decide when to get past this over-reaction (ala, Dooley hurting our recruting for year over his embarrassment over the way Davidson bumbled the Kemp deal). Or maybe they (UGAA)completely understand the concequences, and thats just a decision that have made. If so, we as a fan base need to stop talking out of both side of our mouths, when this stuff inevitably happens.

Wawawawawawa Altamaha. I go back to my original point. The rules are what they are and I’m sure every effort is made to educate our players on them. Knowing the rules and then breaking them is by definition undisciplined. I do not think it is too much to ask our players to abstain from drug use. You’re just making excuses for them. To sit here and suggest that we’d be competing with Bama on the field with a more lax drug policy is simply absurd. You sound like a Tech fan.

The fact is we’ve got a bunch of primmadonnas on this team. You can see it when they celebrate like a bunch of idiots in games when they do something that is simply their job to do. There’s too much flash and not enough substance if you ask me.

We are ALL full of it and I am mostly just having fun but on the serious side y’all ranting and raving primarily about CMR and some wanting to know why CMR tested players right after spring break is bigtime BS.

CMR does as his contract requires. He didn’t make the rules or the punishment but he administers such and that is already spelled out for him to go by. Anyone who knows CMR knows he is NOT going to fudge an any requirement, rule or law. Thats why UGA hasn’t had any major penalties by the NCAA

CMR has a new 5 year contract and there is nothing you and I can do about it so you and your ilk are simply providing crap for opposing schools to use against UGA in recruiting. It is hard enough with recruits knowing UGA’s punishments are far more strenious than other schools.

Still all of you have a right to your opinion no matter what MOST of DAWGNATION thinks how dumb/stupid it is. I hate the 1,2,3 chance rule. I wish Tech would just say you fail a Dope Test and your off the team.
Agree with those that say make the whole team pay, the players would hold others accountable it they knew it would impact them.

Also NCAA need to bring back the Athletic dorms, where teams can put coaches / reps in dorms to watch player behavior. They put these players in general population and can’t watch them, yet they hold them to higher standards.

brainiac,

So show me Richt’s bcs trophy ma’am

bham dawg,

Of course all the players are the same. The difference though is what happens when they get on campus- the sense of discipline the program is run with. And given the plethora of arrests, suspensions, police contacts, etc. over the years for uga its clear there is no sense of discipline and order over there. The inmates are running the asylum. What has Bama had something like 2 active players in the program arrested in 3 years? Your program is in complete chaos. Ours is a model for the nation in terms of discipline and focus and of course in terms of national championships and developing players for the pros. We are projected to have an SEC record 5 players go in the 1st round of the draft this year. We had 3 or 4 go first round last year.

@The Bammers… Discipline- (noun) PUNISHMENT INFLICTED by way of correction and training. How can bama be more disciplined when they don’t even suspend players for a failed drug test?

Reality Check

March 30th, 2012
1:25 pm

Let me offer a possible reality: The current GA players as a group are, no better or worse, no less moral or honest, no less ethical or honorable, than other scholarship athletes at other schools. They do not skip more classes, use more drugs, break more rules, do more things that are illegal, or commit more acts that would bring embarrassment to themselves, their team, or their University. My guess is that as a group, they are in fact, all things being equal, well down on the “good” side of the Bell Curve of Team Morality & Integrity. We are now left with the “all things being equal” question. Having been friends with many Georgia athletes in the early & mid 80’s, as well as hearing my uncle’s stories of his & his Wally Butts’ teammates’ extra curricular activities (no, not drugs), I can’t imagine that those teams, in todays environment would not suffer at least as many suspensions. But back to apples & apples, I would suggest that it is not the players, but the environmental & systemic variables that are responsible for a higher number of suspensions relative to other D1 & SEC schools. Are the Athens & University police more aggressive & less lenient in their enforcement activities? Is the Athletic Department’s drug testing protocols more likely to catch casual drug use? Are Team rules more inclusive & onerous? Is there less likelihood of ignoring infractions? Of course our athletes need to follow the rules and be good teammates & citizens. They need to learn that their actions have personal & broader consequences. We just need to realize that except for game days, The Dawgs are playing on a different field.

Leaking such information to the press or media can be detrimental to a person’s ability to function with regard to the Athletic Department. Some programs tend to handle these matters internally and it works well if everyone has “bought in”. Suspensions are not always a reflection of a program’s substance, but it is often perceived.

Do you guys/gals actually think that other schools are not having similar problems? Sure they are, their policies are just not as stringent as UGA’s &/or these schools are keeping it secret. These kids if they thought that there would not be a UA test after springbreak…….then they’re not to bright. It is extremely frustrating that these guys don’t realize what a negative impact this has on the entire team. If a prospect wants to smoke weed then he probably doesn’t want to attend GA maybe this is hurting us in recruting? Hopefully it does, & we can “weed” out these prospects during the recruting process.

I am not saying it’s okay to smoke pot or be around it but to put things into perspective a little I do think a questionable use by Rambo and minimal exposure for his first offense DOES NOT WARRANT A FOUR GAME SUSPENSION. Even though we all know that pot is illegal for me this offense is extremely minor compared to other drug exposure and other illegal activities.
I lived a few miles out of town my senior year at Georgia but the other years I lived close to the college, in 1973 and 1974 and every , EVERY fraternity or apartment I went in have pot in it ,somewhere. I did not smoke but ALL of my friends did and unless you wanted to be a hermit and live in a cave somewhere you were going to be around pot. Most of my friends made top grades and were extremely intelligent , good kids. Sorry , I just can’t take a hard a@@ stance on these extreme punishments for pot use or in an attempt to keep kids away from it’s exposure.

For those that still don’t believe that there’s a coaching problem, that’s unfortunate. It was only almost 3 months ago that this guy fielded a bust field goal kicker on 3rd down in OT against Michigan State.
Ask yourself the question: If Willie Martinez didn’t get fired, would Georgia’s defense have much of a chance last year? Or would they be further back in the dark ages than they are today?
Ask yourself the question: If Willie Martinez were still Defensive Coordinator today, do you really think he’d outwit Auburn next year going up against Van Gorder, the guy who helped put UGA’s defense on the map and Willie couldn’t keep up with it?
Ask yourself the question: Before Richt got here, were we worried about South Carolina, Kentucky, and Vandy? Who would’ve ever thought that there would be years where South Carolina would look better than UGA in the SEC and UGA would struggle just to beat Vandy?
Lastly, knowing that Alabama mopped the floor with you a few years ago when you went for the ineffective “blackout” for the 2nd time, why would you come out in Jacksonville with the black helmets / red facemasks?
What has Richt done since his early years that positions him to take this program further than it’s been at it’s peak (an SEC Championship)? Can you answer that question with confidence?
Remember, there have been 4 coaches (Urban, Nick, Les, and Gene) that have succeeded with national championships in the SEC in a smaller amount of time than Richt’s tenure. Some have done it multiple times at multiple schools. Some have moved on. Regardless, you have a Florida State disciple running an offense that’s obsolete. Period.

And don’t start ranting and raving on how Richt should use Bobo as the scapegoat. Most of you people were asking for the promotion of Bobo to Offensive Coordinator years ago when you thought Richt had play-calling issues. Is it really coincidental that the same team now has the same issues because there’s a head coach that might have control issues? Can you honestly say that Bobo’s calling all the plays with confidence? If you can, great…but unfortunately, bloggers, it’s still the coach’s fault, because he chooses to do nothing about it.
Remember, McGarity helped him delegate all of those assignments so he could focus more on the team. Besides hiring Todd Grantham, who may have saved his job, what has Richt done that proves he’s more focused on winning games and going for the big prize?

Just got a text from my source. Ogletree suspension is not four games. It will be a two game suspension. I can confirm that there was dialogue between Coach Richt and Alec Ogletree, in which Coach Richt asked for the truth and Ogletree was dishonest about why his test result came back positive for Marajuana. Rambo suspension will be upheld more than likely, regardless of his pending appeal.

Then we can cut the stinkys players that turns out not good enough for schollie based on drug test framing. But first we got to fix Adams for not letting us run team and testing. But the bad fans always complaining no matter what even when every team doing weed to. Weed is no big deal and shouldn’t be punished unlike playing bad on fields. Well same as always when you ask me for an answer based on YOUR opinion that I might not agree with. I don’t know how many. To me its not nearly as simplistic as “no respect”.

I could easily point out some very obvious ways UGA could lesson the occurance of those tidbit, if thats all there was to it, and it would not mean they did have more respect. Would it? My belief is that it far more likely that players anywhere respect thier head coach, whoever that is. So no, i don’t buy that as the only logical assumption to explain it. especially the way it was framed. That they get themselves suspended becasue they arent afraid of enough of the most stringent p. Just seems completely backwards logic to me.

O.k. the first year this stuff happens you say, “Oh it’s just college kids”, the second you start suspending some to get everybody’s attention, now it’s time to start making these young men suffer as one. Accountability amongst teammates has to be a must, and GEORGIA isn’t doing it. Really(and I reassure you he’s doing it) if I’m Nick Saban I point to the number #1 recruit in the nation, which happens to be here and say to him, “Kid why go to a program where you have no discipline, no national champions, and a coaching staff that doesn’t get it. We’ve fallen behind Alabama, LSU, and at this rate Arkansas. Geez not to mention we’re years behind Florida. Thirty two players in what two, maybe three years? The “Dream Team”, which by the way 5 guys are gone has become a joke, and the bottom line is Georgia isn’t winning with way to much talent. Prime example, let’s look closely people, Knowshon Moreno(Denver), Kregg Lumpkin(Tampa Bay) Danny Ware(Giants), Matthew Stafford(Detroit), Muhammed Massaquoi(Cleveland) Clint Boling (Cincinnati)Fernando Valaquez (Tennesee) Kris Durham (Seattle), and finally A.J. Green(Cincinnatti) all on the field all at Georgia at the same time at some point, and we can;t play in a National Championship. People notice I didn’t mention one defensive player, but trust me it’s a few. CMR just isn’t getting it done with the talent he has, and gets year end and out. Promise you if Nick Saban was at Georgia college football and America would be locked on what’s going on at UGA. WE GOTTA STOP SHAMING A PROUD PROGRAM AND WIN AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.

When Seminole County coach Alan Ingram talked about the possible suspension of Baccari Rambo one of the first things he said in defending his former high school player was that the University of Georgia was guilty of stupid timing in conducting drug tests right after spring break. That’s seems to indicate that he feels using drugs on spring break is OK and Georgia should look the other way.
