Report: Alec Ogletree, Bacarri Rambo suspended for multiple games

ATHENS — The Georgia Bulldogs may have lost two more front-line defensive players to suspensions.

The website Dawgpost.com, citing “multiple sources inside the Bulldogs’ football program,” is reporting that All-American safety Bacarri Rambo and starting inside linebacker Alec Ogletree have been suspended “two to four games” for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity refused to confirm or deny the report. “No comment at this time,” he said Thursday morning.

If true, that will make four defensive starters who are suspended for early-season games for the Bulldogs. Starting cornerback Sanders Commings already has been suspended for first two games after his conviction for simple battery and disorderly conduct. The other starting corner, senior Branden Smith, is facing a suspension of at least one game for his recent arrest for marijuana possession.

Three other players — including two more defensive backs — were dismissed from the team in January for stealing from a teammate.

It would be the second suspension of Rambo’s career. The 6-foot, 218-pound safety sat out the season opener against Boise State this past year for an unspecified violation of team rules. Rambo was voted an All-American after starting 13 games and leading the SEC with 8 interceptions.

Ogletree, a 6-3, 236-pound junior, also has been suspended before. He missed the season opener of his freshman season following his arrest for misdemeanor theft. Ogletree missed six games this past season after breaking a foot in the first quarter of the first game. He finished with 52 tackles, three forced fumbles and six quarterback pressures and is considered one of the best overall athletes on the team.

Head coach Mark Richt, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and team spokesman Claude Felton have not returned phone calls seeking comment. Felton, responding later to an email, said he did not have any information regarding Wednesday’s report.

It’s obvious that these kids just don’t care about playing football at UGA. From Crowell to Smith to Rambo and Tree. It drives me nuts.

I am totally fed up with these idiots! Kick them off the team, win or lose without them! They don’t deserve to play for UGA nor the pros if they were even being considered! They’re total idiots!!

1st time ever! However as much I have supported Coach Richt throughout the years, this again is a poor example of discipline. Again the team has an opportunity to come out the gates in the TOP 5 to open the season. And again some bone headed decisions by so called leaders on the defense affects the TEAM AS A WHOLE. This team still has a ton of talent left on both sides of the ball, but I don’t of any team that has a chance in hell missing half their starters from a unit. Maybe HELL WILL freeze over and the team will still prevail, however this recent group of suspensions has made it harder than what it had to be.

They should be suspended from playing in the Red&Black game and the Buffalo game. That’s 2 games and is punishment enough.

Same old idiocy from nitwits who are immersed in big-time college sports and invariably start thinking they’re entitled.

The real issue is the fans who invest so much money and interest in these buffoons. The real message for fans is move on, get a life. These fools aren’t worth the time or energy.

I just cant believe this. Was just feeling like we will have one of the best defenses in CFB and looking forward to a monster 2012 season and these boneheads continue to let UGA down. Once again, we have players that don’t care about anything but themselves. They have really put us in a bad hole to start the year. This really chaps my A**!

Chem – it doesn’t show that Richt is not a disciplinarian – it shows, once again, that his flock is not committed to being real champions. It is a key indicator that something is rotten in Denmark. Richt wil never bring a MNC to Georgia.

Some of you are straight up idiots. First of all we don’t know what they did if it is true. Second its not like these KIDS are perfect. You have around 100 players on the team, some of them are going to mess up. If every other SEC school had as tough of discipline as UGA they would all have just as many suspended players. Also its not like they are the only players on the team, we did pretty well without tree for those 6 weeks when he was gone. So calm down about it because nothing can be changed and they’ll come back after 2 weeks and be ready to go.

If I recall, Ogletree had an arrest two years ago. There is bad stuff going on between the hedges, and Richt is no longer burying his head in the sand. He is actively covering it up.

Do you remember the days when football teams had their own dorms. The had bed checks every night while school was in session and they ate every meal together. Either the NCAA or the Feds broke that up. I do not remember which.

Saint Richt for President! At this rate I bet UGA students are looking forward to the walk-on tryouts – they should be able to earn a spot on the starting defense.

Seriously?

I think it is about time Richt does something to scare these players straight. Make an example of at least one of them.

Last year it was the offense with Crowell and Thomas, and now it’s the defense….

I’m in favor of looking for actual student athletes that aren’t “special admits” and represent UGA well. This is getting awfully embarassing.

Double Dawg – given that QB Zach Mettenberger sexually molested a waitress and Wayshaun Ealey committed hit and run along with Orsen Charles the TE was passed out drunk in his running car following the example of Athletic Director Damon Evans and Caleb King neglecting to pay legal fines, I would say that both sides of the ball are scofflaws at UGA……

It’s gonna be hard playing a game with 7 players on defense and 8 on offense. Then again, who knows, it might not even be any different. Is the rumor true that they are going to put bars on the windows in one of the dorms and turn it into a “temporary holding facility” for football players?

Well, at least against Buffalo, this won’t matter. Mizzou, however, is a different story, mainly b/c of Rambo’s suspension (if it’s 2 games). While Tree is a key player for our defense, Herrera is more than capable of playing. Honestly, our LBs are so deep that we only really need Tree in big games. In the big games, where big plays are a must, Tree is missed sorely. However, Herrera is a solid player and a great tackler. At least we have Corey Moore; he’s going to get a trial by fire in Columbia, MO. But he’ll at least get his feet wet against Buffalo. Major disappointment but not the end of the world. For those of you advocating for kicking one of these kids off the team, you’re over-reacting. CMR needs to get a grip on these stupid disciplinary violations, but–for the time being–they are still pretty minor.

I have never seen a team that shoots itself in the foot more than the UGA football team. Has there ever been a season where all key players were eligible for the first few games? I certainly can’t remember one. They had a chance to be something special — now it’s all in jeopardy before it starts. What a joke. I’m starting to think McGarity is somebody’s puppet. Wonder who that is…?

Richt punishing players for violating team policies that he put in place knowing that it would generate bad press is about as close to the “right” thing he could do. Comparing suspension rates across schools is dumb if team rules and enforcement are not uniform.

Mizzou was already so much more amped for this game than UGA could ever be for various reasons.

We have met the quota for 2012 suspensions and it’s only March. If we lose anymore starters we have no chance at playing in the Dome in December.

Unless something rises to the level of being egregious, CMR is not going to kick any of these 4 guys off the team; nor should he. These are youthful indiscretions. Selfish? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Irresponsible? Yes. But, if any of them got kicked off the team, the punishment certainly would not fit the crime. After all, all 4 have a future in the NFL. Tree and Rambo could possibly go in the first day. Stealing from teammates is one thing; “violating team rules” is another. Players need to grow up; failing that, get a de-tox kit from 420 degrees, located on Washington Street near Hot Corner.
