ATHENS — There are a lot of question marks along Georgia’s offensive line. But there is at least one thing we know for certain: Kenarious Gates is going to be an integral part of it.

That has pretty much been that case with Gates ever since he showed up. Though he was a late addition to the 2010 recruiting class — he snapped up UGA’s last-minute offer on the eve of national signing day — Gates started three games as a true freshman and has played in every game ever since for which he was physically able.

Now a 6-foot-5, 328-pound junior, Gates’ role becomes even more significant this season. He opened spring camp as the Bulldogs’ first option at the all-important left tackle position. He is heir apparent to Cordy Glenn, who has graduated and moved on to the NFL after protecting quarterback Aaron Murray’s blind side last season.

It’s a role Gates saw coming and one he is more than happy to accept.

“I knew as soon as the bowl got over with that was a position I needed to get familiar with,” said Gates, who started nine games at left guard last season and missed two with an ankle injury. “I knew I’d probably be the guy to pick that up. So before spring ever got here I’ve been working on it, trying to get better at it.”

Gates is getting plenty of competition. Junior Austin Long is getting some looks at left tackle and the Bulldogs brought in Mark Beard from junior college to compete at that and other positions. Later this summer, 5-star signee John Theus of Jacksonville will join the fray.

For the most part, it appears to be Gates’ position to lose. He has much work to do after playing guard for the Bulldogs the past two seasons.

“It’s not that big of a difference,” he said. “You’ve just got to be quicker to the outside and to the inside. I’m somewhat used to it because I played it throughout high school and I’ve practiced at it here. . . . You’ve got to be an athlete. You’ve got to have quick feet and be athletic to play the position because it’s the blind side of the quarterback. It’s one of the most important positions out there.”

Whatever flaws and imperfections Gates may have as a left tackle, they figure to get exposed during this camp. In the spring, the Bulldogs always scrimmage the No. 1 offense and defense against each other. That means Gates is often matched up with All-American outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who led the SEC in quarterback sacks this past season.

“Jarvis Jones is one of the best outside linebackers in the nation and we go against each other every day,” Gates said. “He helps me and I help him all the time. We’re going against each other throughout every practice. He makes me better; I make him better.”

Georgia is quite fortunate to have Gates on board. He was originally committed to Kentucky but switched when the Bulldogs offered him the day before national signing day in 2010. UGA came forward with an offer only after a couple of other prospects turned it down.

Gates ended up playing seven games in 2010 with three starts at right guard.

“I’m here now and I’m glad to be here; I never looked back at the way all that happened,” Gates said. “I’m happy to play here and now I have the opportunity to play my natural position.”

Gates played his entire career at Greenville High at left tackle. He calls “The Blind Side” his favorite movie and Michael Oher, the inspiration for said movie, his favorite player.

So if anybody is anxious about Gates playing left tackle, it’s not Gates.

“I’ve got to get better with my footwork and with my hands,” Gates said. “But overall I feel like I’ve done good there. . . . They wouldn’t put me there if they didn’t think I could do it. They’ve believed in me and trusted me to fill other positions.”

Now the Bulldogs are looking for Gates to come through once again.

Welcome, Kenarious! Please be ready for Jadevian Clowny at SC! Your predecessor ignored him at the line of scrimmage leaving a completely open space for him to simply reach our and grab Murray by the Jersey and shake him like a rag doll, causing the ball to come loose and resulted in an immediate touchdown for SC. The Dawgs were ahead at the time and had the momentum to win. Honestly, Glenn didn’t even touch him and he was lined up right in front of him. Talk about a missed block, heck this one wasn’t even attempted! Please don’t give him that easy chance this year! Look at it this way, the DAWGS owe one to SC……just go get it!! GO DAWGS!!

The Dawgs will be real nasty this year. There will be a lot of teams getting the beat down from the Junk Yard. This team is solid all the way around . The DB situation will be one of the strong points after the first two games. I heard that Mizzu QB is having shoulder surgery this spring. I think Richt is tired of all the talk about him being soft.

Has anyone heard anything about the progress of Zach Dabell and Xavier Ward? Both seem to have builds that would allow them to really bulk up and they seem to have a load of tallent. I’m not worried about AM’s blind side. Chip, please ask these guys what they are doing to be more effective in the run game. I don’t care about their footwork and their hands. This isn’t a ballet company. This is SEC football. What are they going to do if we’re back in the SECCG and we need to pick up a tough 3 or 4 yards against a nasty LSU or Bama D-line to keep a drive going? Are they going to do the cha cha with them or block them? I don’t care how quick their damn feet are or how good their hands are. Who cares. We’re not going to win anything untill they start PUSHING PEOPLE BACKWARDS. This offense and coaching staff simply does not get it I’m afraid.

You are DEAD WRONG about Crowell versus Marshall

Crowell(according to eyewitness accounts), is running over people. The defense is winning overall but Crowell is playing very physical and has won several one on one battles with the defense.

Marshall shows signs of being good but he lacks the physical size of Crowell but has better speed.

Crowell 220 pounds
Marshall 190 pounds

That is why Crowell is 1st team.

Also, regarding the fights. There were 4 total and Crowell was not involved in all of them. Football players fight? Is this really a revelation? No.

Ken Malcome is also doing very well this spring.

The offensive line is trying to get their depth chart set.

Crowell is the best running back on campus.

If we are weak at any position on the offensive line , and especially left tackle from the first team standpoint, just think how bad things will be when the second team plays. We need at least two deep at every position on the offensive line with NO fall off to be able to compete with Alabama and LSU. Offensive linemen substitute frequently so they all will get plenty of opportunities to get on the field.
Because Murray is short sometimes he has the tendency to move back too far which allows fast defensive ends to make it around the containment so it is just important for Murray to make sure he stays up in the pocket. A lot of the offensive line criticism last year was Murray’s fault.

Joey

We will have lots of talented O-linemen, and maybe more depth than the past few seasons.

The problem is, we have had talent on the O-line up to now – Jones and Glenn will go in the first couple rounds of the NFL draft, and Anderson probably later. So why does our O-line seem so average when we go against good teams? So is it lack of proper technique or conditioning?

It’s not lack of talent.

I love Kenarious Gates but it always seems like we don’t have a left tackle in waiting. It always seems like we have to move somebody from their natural position to fill in at left tackle. Last year it was cordy playing out of position, now we are moving Gates after playing 2 years at guard. I think our O-line would be much more consistent if we could get the players in one position as a freshman and keep them there. Hopefully Theus will come in and be a 3 year starter. Also, where is Mark Beard? Usually when you bring in a JUCO guy especially on the o-line you are expecting them to start right away. Stripling is at OLB.as is Burrows. All are supposed to be ready by the 1st game and Ward & Debell have gained at least 20 – 25 lbs and strength in their red shirt year.

2 SEC Championships, the last one of which was 2005. 2005 season was 8 years ago now this up-coming 2012 season. After 2005, Mark Richt is the # 6 in The SEC in won/lost record this coming 2012 season; and # 21 nationally after 2005. That does not make me a techie to not settle for that; it does however, make you a RICHT-O-PHILE to settle for that. There is a huge difference in being a Mark Richt fan, and being an UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program fan. If all you want is mediocrity, choose 1 of the 119 other colleges, and be a fan there for Mark Richt. There are 65 Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program fans to this 1 blog who have told you this. Ignorance is not bliss; it is a lack of education. If you are satisfied with # 6 in just SEC teams and # 21 nationally in won/lost record after 2005, then take a hike – the other 65 of us are not. DawginLex,

Thank you for your insight from your point of view and all the practices regarding Isaiah Crowell.

As I have already shared my opinion you studied for that reply, we shall wait until this time next year, to determine if you are right. I would love nothing more than for a guy who spent his entire time in my presence jawing at Lesser Opponents, doing nothing against the better opponents, now recently having his behind beat by Alec Ogletree, failing drug test, being suspended twice, taking himself out of games, failing to be the guy the team could rely upon, and now this off-season bragging he is going to be Heisman Trophy – to wake up and do what his Carver Columbus coach, Del McGee, told him to do all season last season.

When Del McGee is satisfied with IC, I will be. When he isn’t, nothing you can say about his “abilities” alters my current up-to-date hopes that IC is the guy this football team requires as our Lead Tailback.

I want nothing but the best for IC. If he doesn’t pan out, I will not lose one minute of sleep on the guy, and the size of IC vs size of Keith Marshall means nothing to me : since it is the size of the fight in the dog, not the size of the dog that I personally require.

I am going with 13-1, as you know. That leaves no time for me wasting another year of excuses. The Proof is in the Pudding, not some words and practices; we had plenty of those last season. A lifetime full.

Go Isaiah Crowell : We’re all pulling for you sir. Now, go have a great year 2012. Thanks for the chat DawginLex, sir.

Excuse me for not having a sense of humor, but does this conversation have to descend into another black male athlete and running from the police? Anyway, if Gates has a “great” season at left tackle, he’s outta here, as in NFL. The fact that he’s a 3 year starter who was thrust into these positions, not expected from day one like some others, bodes well for his future. If he gives up less than 3 sacks, you can book his ticket to the pros. Then Theus will be ready to start at left tackle in 2013.

“It is VITAL that ALL O-linemen have really good footwork and handwork. Check it out. It is extremely important if they are to be seriously effective”

I agree. Its also equally important that they man up and get some push on the defense when the time comes. We have been GREATLY deficient in that area for several years now. I’m sure our O-line’s footwork and hands are fine. I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about their toughness. You should be too.

Thanks.

Georgia should lead the SEC in total rushing yards and rushing yards per game next year, based off talent and current depth. The O-line is young but there are enough bodies to spread out some snaps and curb mental mistakes. The talent is there to either ground and pound or slash and burn. Passing more to RB’s out of the backfiled, shifting Marshall and having him line up at WR or the slot, and yes, dare I say more bubble screens shouldn’t hurt. With Mitchell getting used to CB, there is no true “blazer” among the wideouts, but plenty of sure hands and experience between Conley, Bennett, Brown, and Wooten (King drops too many touchdown passes). I bet 2013 season tickets, even with the necessary talent, Georgia DOES NOT lead the SEC in rushing in 2012 but IC will gain 1300 yards and score 10 touchdowns.

slydog

March 26th, 2012

BTW, 1300 yards and 10 touchdowns is still a good season if you have to split carries between Samuel, Malcome, and Marshall. Gurley will redshirt, book it, unless IC craps out again.

I don’t believe a single Muschamp recruit has been arrested for anything yet, although I am sure it will happen. But Muschamp puts a lot of emphasis, when recruiting high school kids for the Gators, that they have good character. I think some eyebrows will be raised in the next few years when some of Florida’s top athletes are not heavily recruited by Muschamp…..because they might have questionable character. At the same time, I think you will see better Florida teams as a result.

Every coach out there says they put a lot of emphasis on “good character”. Isn’t that what Meyer said too? The problem is that it’s impossible to know which kid is going to have a scrap years later involving alchohol, or MJ, or the DDL. I doubt any of those 9 player were predictably going to get into trouble and Urban knew it, took em anyway. If so, that’s on the school.

That’s not to say that I don’t believe Muschamp is trying to keep it clean as best he can.

Meyer never mentioned “character” as a focal point of his recruiting the way that Muschamp has…repeatedly. In addition, Meyer never handled players the way Mushcamp has when they get into trouble (Muschamp has dismissed some serious talent at Florida already for repeat offenses). He has also asked certain players to go play elsewhere for not buying in to the new way of doing things in Gainesville. It is obvious that Mushcamp has begun a “new and improved” brand of Florida Gators football (there are no entitled players under his leadership and you earn everything you get on the practice field….and I like it a lot. And the team, I believe, will be drastically improved this coming year. And he has already proven (and is currently doing it again) what an outstanding recruiter he is.

This offense and coaching staff simply does not get it I’m afraid.

dawgfan,
have you actually ever played offensive line? I seriously doubt it or you would understand the importance of doing the little things like good hands and good feet. Hands move faster than hats(helmets) and deliver half of your blow to the defender. Good hands also keeps you in good position on the inside which results in less holding calls. The importance of feet is simply position for running plays. Your first 3-5 steps will determine the kind of position that you have on your defender. If your feet suck then you lost off the snap of the ball. Please get educated. Running like a bull into a person is what D-Line does. Doing that as an O Lineman will get you face down on the ground right where you should be blocking while your running back is getting some dental work from a defensive lineman

HOGWASH propaganda, no different than the Mark Richt fans’ posts to this blog about how great he is, too.

2010 Will Muschamp hired by Jeremy Foley, December 11, 2010. Recruiting Class February, three months later, he signed

A.C. LEONARD # 6 best Tight End in nation

Feb 15, 2012 he is arrested and charged with pushing his live-in girlfriend to the ground banging her head on a dog cage there, then grabbing her by the hair and yanking her out of the apt.

Nice character, son, for a Will Muschamp Scholarship he gave him over a year prior.

7-6 as a head football coach, Will Muschamp has been fiery on the field during games, and ended the season 3-5 in The SEC East – a very DOWN division.

Bragged all year 2010 and 2011 about how he was going to beat Georgia.

The tight end is the tenth Florida player arrested since Will Muschamp took over as head coach.

Who COMMANDS RESPECT ?

Who respects whom ?

Will Muschamp allows A.C. LEONARD whom he gave a Scholarship to last season in February 2011 three months after being hired as coach at Florida to attend the pro-day :

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/2012/03/uf-tight-end-a-c-leonard-remains-suspended-attends-pro-day.html

Florida’s lone true freshman to record a reception on the season, A.C. LEONARD is an example of the very best recruits Will Muschamp can possibly find anywhere.

Beating up little girls and dragging them around by their hair after pushing them to the ground banging their head on dog cages. Really nice

History and culture? Saban not a good fit? Lol.

Yeah, what program would want a coach who has won 3 BCS Titles, with two different (pathetic before he got there) teams, in the same time frame of Richt’s tenure in Athens? A coach who works his butt off, and fires unproducing assistants. A coach who has not been on NCAA probation, and I bet has less than half of the secondary violations that Richt and Co have committed.

But obviously, the UGAAA is full of folks who are perfectly happy with being “better than average.” 10 WINS – WHOO HOO!!

Mike Bobo had Knowshon Moreno 2008. In the only 3 games we played all season long, he averaged giving Knowshon the football 17 plays a game. Coincidently, we therefore, gave up 29, 31 and 42 consecutive points in all 3 losses. By stark contrast, Aaron Murray threw 403 mostly errant passes, ending up the # 72 QB in the nation 2011 in pass completion percentage and has averaged 1 yard a carry in his 2 years with 173 carries himself, doing too much. 2012 all that goes out the window.

You simply ignore the various thing that seperate Alabama and UGA when it come to the football program. Lets just ignore everything that our administration and fanbase has specifically said they dislike about some of whats going on over there. Obviously people prefer to win ballgames rather than lose. Yea, ok. So we just be, not us, to get there? better to me us, and get there, as we have before. We don’t have any history of hiring and firing handfuls of coach to find that next guy. We have no history of going out and simply paying the highest salary we can, to hire the biggest name out there, with no regard to how long that will last, as long as we win, and big. That’s perfectly fine. its smart .I’ve said that. If it fits. It’s just not who we are. Don’t like that? Not sure what to tell you. It is what it is. Dawg 48, your bending and twisting of my words is humorous. There are numerous ways you can earn the respect of those who report to you. Saban is “no nonsense”, Richt is “no nonsense”, what’s the difference. It would seem from the outside looking in that Saban is the one who has his players respect, regardless of how he got it. It’s so obvious in Athens that the culture that Altamaha speaks of has changed dramatically since Richt has been here. “Command Respect” is a short phrase that can be taken “literally” several different ways. I have no problem with a coach’s attitude, style, philosophy, preparation, work ethic, etc “commanding the respect” of his players. I guess that’s why I have a problem with Mark Richt the “coach”.

You are the one who took a facetious remark and tried to make something serious about it.

I get it. It IS what it is. I’m a lifelong UGA fan, therefore I know well that most UGA fans want more, but as long as the administration and AA are happy with 10 wins, 10 wins is what we’ll get. Unless of course, our coach forgets to study football for a few years at the time . . .

You would rather LOSE ballgames, say we don’t have the history # 11 all-time in wins, want to keep the # 21 nationally wins instead after 2005, be # 6 in wins just compared to 2012 SEC teams after 2005, and as long as you say we don’t over-sign with 109 signed to his 85-man limit and only 78 today on Scholarship counting 3 walk-ons who never play offense or defense. The guy is such a scum and Alabama well their # 1 and want these 3 BCS NC in The SEC Nick Saban has in the Mark Richt era.

Forget that Auburn has BCS NC. Forget that Florida has two BCS NC. Forget LSU has 2 BCS NC.

We’re UGA. We do it the RIGHT WAY HERE.

No Expectations.

Everything is fine.

# 6 in SEC just good enough for us Georgia Bulldogs’ Football fans like you who don’t even go the games, just blog how we do it the RIGHT WAY here at UGA

for you. 26 of our Scholarships Mark Richt gave out for 2012 transferred out, to which YOU said to each good riddance.

yeah, boy, I just love it how we do it – according to you. You don’t know what to tell the 65 posters who have told you we’re not like you. We actually hold him accountable on and off the field.

MOSTLY for being # 6 in SEC after 2005

you know ?

After the Jim Donnan recruits were all gone.

Personally, I believe that the “just happy to win 10 games” is a complete straw man argument. Pure blog drama. I suspect McGarity would laugh you out of his office to even suggest that.

YOU hold nobody accountable. YOU do jack squat. YOU do nothing, but pretend, and roleplay.

You also ignore and twist and lie. You are dishonest.

Paul Paul:

Someone else may have already commented about Dabell and Ward. My understanding is that they both need to continue to bulk up this season and are not quite ready to make the top 8 or so offensive lineman this year for UGA. We actually have more depth this year. It may not be PROVEN depth yet, but I think the staff feels comfortable with 7-8 guys at this point and they are figuring that Theus will earn playing time as a freshman. Unless there are a lot of injuries, I think Dabell and Ward will stay in the incubator and begin contributing as RS Sophmores next season.

Is it just me or it there a void in the AJC’s reporting on spring football so far ? The articles we are getting are good..just not a lot of them.

TJ will be fine

TJ Stripling will be fine. He is still recovering for that nasty knee deal in the 2010 Colorado game. He then was a true frosh. Redshirted last year and so, this season he will be red shirt soph. He will be excelllent.

Another SW Dekalb product is my man Ken BOO Malcome and I know that he is going to compete and compete hard for routine playing time at running back, Last year he looked really smooth on a few carries as be re built his confidence.

WOW 2 SEC Championships—-take a breath, cut down on the caffiene, its college football. We’re not fixing the national debt or curing cancer here, just COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Sure we all want to win but if I’m not mistaken there is usually only one national champion every year. With few exceptions, Alabama is far ahead of the other programs not only in the SEC but everywhere and probably will be for a while. Their fans are going to enjoy the ride, who can blame them. Saban is right now not only the best coach, he is the best recruiter and gets just about anybody he wants, kinda like Notre Dame in the 60’s and early 70’s. I love the Dawgs as much as anyone and while we might contend for the East or possibly the SEC Championship occasionally, that’s about it. Accept it and try to enjoy the success we are having, you’ll live longer.

If that 10:18 was directed at me Altamaha, what have I ignored, twisted, and lied about to be deemed “dishonest”? If it wasn’t, no worries either.

Just because we differ in our views on the state of things in Athens, dishonest? Powerful words, I consider myself a person of character. I just tell things the way I see them.

Dude! WTH? I was so clearly NOT talking to you. Why on earth would I, out of the blue, call you a liar? especially since we weren’t even discussing anything at the time.

You so often talk between the lines when commenting, and your comment (10:18) used similar language from a previous blog of mine. That’s why I asked the “question”, because that’s NOT like you, thought maybe you’d gone off the deep end. That’s also why I said, “no worries”.

@Chip
I thought it was a fine, informative article on K. G. and the line, but it seems like IR has been hijacked again by the same people over and over, who have an ANTI-UGA agenda. I, just like a lot of fans like to talk football, but I’m tired of trying to defend my schools and H.C.s integrity and tradition. According to them, we have neither. Have some fraternities at the University of Alabama decided to prank GA. and over-load the UGA blog with negative comments and non-sense? This blog has nothing to do with your article and if I want to read about the University of Alabama, I’ll go to one of their articles or sites. Half of these Losers have Dawg in their name …

Kingdaddy: Not sure if you saw my report but Georgia was cross-training Richard Samuel at fullback yesterday and will be throughout the spring. Zander Ogletree is currently running No. 1, as expected, and some walkons are getting work there as well. It’ll get even more interesting when touted fullback signee Quayvon Hicks joins the competition in the fall. Meanwhile, Georgia is a multiple formation team and has several sets where the tight end shifts to the fullback position. The Bulldogs also have the option of going one back in three or four wides. So, as always, they’ll got with the personnel groupings that get their best six offensive threats on the field at one time. Odds are the favored groupings this season likely won’t be the ones with a fullback. But we’ll see.
