TB Isaiah Crowell working with No. 1 offense at outset of spring practice

ATHENS – Quick observations from my first (short) glimpse of Georgia’s spring football practice. We only got about 20 minutes, but here goes:

  • When they initially broke out into teamwork, the tailback rotation went as follows: sophomore Isaiah Crowell first, then senior Richard Samuel, then sophomore Ken Malcome, then true freshman Keith Marshall. Not sure if it means anything or not but that’s the way they went in and out as they worked fast through two-minute drill. . . . In case you missed it earlier, rising senior Carlton Thomas has decided to leave the team while seeking a transfer.
  • Samuel, who had two ankle surgeries following the Florida game last fall, was limping noticeably but working throughout.
  • Malcolm Mitchell, as expected, was working exclusively with the defensive backs and looking good doing it. His 6-foot-1 frame looks taller working with among the DBs. He made a spectacular, over-the-shoulder, one-handed grab during one drill. Had on white jersey and didn’t look as though he was going to work any with wideouts.
  • Looks like some position switches along the defensive front. Ray Drew and Cornelius Washington were working with the defensive ends rather than the outside linebackers. Former defensive end Derrick Lott was rotating with John Jenkins at noseguard. I didn’t see Kwame Geathers but I don’t know if that means anything. He is on the roster, however.
  • The following players were wearing green jerseys, which signifies they’re injured and being withheld from contact: WR Chris Conley (left wrist), WR Rhett McGowan (unknown), OT Xzavier Ward (knee), OT Zach DeBell (ankle) OLB Sterling Bailey (foot)
  • Offensive line on day 1 looked like this: LT – Kenarious Gates, LG – Kolton Houston, C – David Andrews, RG – Chris Burnette, RT Watts Dantzler. JUCO transfer offensive lineman Mark Beard was working at second-team left tackle when I saw him and was looking quite a bit like Justin Anderson physically while wearing the No. 79 jersey.

One of the top DB prospect in the nation. A pretty good, not great, receiver rather than just taking a RS, but we recruited him for this very thing.

Good to read that some of our new S&C staff members were out there in the mix with these guys. I got to know a recent letterman a few yrs ago, and he told me (long before change was made, or even thought needed) that he always noticed the previous staff, while absolute gym maniacs, were never actually out their with the guys at practice. He also characterized JoeT as one of the most hardnose, serious, guys he’d ever been around.

I don’t get why Samuel is ahead of Malcome on the depth chart.

Macome averaged 4+ yards per carry last year, Samuel was below 3 yards per carry, and was injured and did not play in 7 games.

Samuel in front of Malcome???????

I doubt that’s the rotation signifies the depth chart. Once Gurley is on campus there’s a chance Samuel could be moved to fullback.

Richard Samuel is all power and speed – straight ahead. H was way to heavy last year for RB. He was at LB weight – around 250 lbs. He is around 235 lbs and should be quicker off the ball once his ankle heals. He will probably play some FB but don’t expect him to be full time there. Carlton was a good RB for his size – quick. He was also a good receiver. Thanks to Carlton for being a loyal Dawg but I can blame him for moving on with the talent at UGA.

Defensively….the potential as a unit is there to be the best in college football.

With crowell and these new dream team recruits, Ga will have the best running game in the SEC. Ga should win the SEC east easy again and play alabama for the SEC title. Alabama should be down a little so Ga can upset them! Dogs win the sec!!!

IC’s table is set. His frosh year behind him, he’s the featured back going in and there should be more than ample back up. If he doesn’t fall to some sort of sophomore curse, he’ll be very successful and impressive this year

As stated in my previous posts on other artticles:

Three teams in the SEC East will finish with a 6-2 conference record.
1. USCe will win the SEC EAST – 6-2 – with losses to LSU and ARK.
2. Florida will be second in the SEC EAST- 6-2 – with losses to LSU and USCe
3. UGA will be third in the SEC EAST – 6-2 – with losses to USCe and Florida

UGA’s defense will be very good – but will peter out in the 4th Q – as Grantham has adjustment issues late in the game and teams know how to attack UGA.
UGA’s offense will be average with yet another mediocre OL and while Murray will put up big numbers – he will CHOKE under the pressure of the defining moment (see USCe, see LSU, see Mich ST)

With that said – UGA will go 10-2 in the regular season and win a mid-tier bowl – finishing 11-2.

1. USCe…..everyone quit reading. How are people suppose to take you seriously…reevaluate and try again. If you can’t do any better then why try???

@ Tide Pride – interesting predictions for sec east in 2012. 11-2 sounds good, but UGA will be in the title hunt – this team has the physical talent -but more important will be the mental side in that they are hungry and determined and will be mentally tough. mental toughness has been missing due to confidence during the rebuild.

I would say that I look forward to playing Alabama in the Title game. However, I am sick of BAMA and SABAN – (yeah, call it petty jealousy). I want another crack at LSU to redeem our pitiful second half from last years game.

Good Luck Carlton…Hope you find peace in the state of Alabama at North Alabama, JSU, Troy or South Alabama. I guess your extracurricular activities were more important than the “G”. To me, you were a gigantic disappointment from the day you signed your LOI. Just a huge problem your entire abbreviated career.
