ATHENS – Georgia’s tailback competition thinned out before it ever got started.
Carlton Thomas, a rising senior from Frostproof, Fla., has decided to transfer. He would have been one of seven tailbacks on scholarship for the Bulldogs this coming fall.
“This decision was based solely on the fact that this is my last year to play and my parents and I felt it was the right move to make,” said Thomas, who was suspended for three games for team rules violations last season. “I want to make more of an impact on the field. I didn’t want to disrupt Georgia’s team and preparation for next season, so I made the final decision to leave earlier rather than later in the year.”
Thomas played in 27 games with two starts. He leaves Georgia with 725 yards on 159 carries and four touchdowns.
No word yet on where Thomas might transfer.
Georgia head coach Mark Richt said Thomas informed running backs coach Bryan McClendon of his intentions Monday night, then met with Richt in his office at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall on Tuesday morning. The Bulldogs opened spring practice Tuesday afternoon.
“Carlton has decided to move on,” Richt said. “He came to me and said he has had discussions with his family and had been thinking it through and praying it through and he summed it up pretty nicely what his intentions are. He wants to move on and try to find a place where he’ll get more playing time. We wish him well.”

DawginLex,
Don’t be so hasty to assume Mr. Thomas is headed to Statesboro. The Eagles still have the guy who busted an 83-yard TD run against Alabama last year – as a freshman. And yes, that was the bulk of Alabama’s No. 1 D, not its backups, who could still start for nearly everybody else.

I like the young man very much. I wish he would stay because who knows what will happen with injuries/suspensions and such. Thomas would have started a few more games last year if he had not been in trouble. I really think he should study this a bit more…maybe make a decision after GDay. Please Carlton don’t make a hasty decision.

Good riddance. He didn’t wanna compete. He wouldn’t have gotten on the field much anyway with Crowell, Marshall, Gurley, Samuel, Malcome, etc anyways. He’s simply not an SEC RB. Period. Let him go to Tech and maybe he can make an impact [except when he plays the Dawgs of course].

You don’t need 7 damn RBs anyway to be good in the SEC. You need a good 3-4 RB rotation to be good. We have that. LSU had Ware, Hilliard, Blue, and Ford. Alabama had Richardson, Lacy, and Fowler. We have Crowell, Marshall, Gurley, and Samuel, Malcome as well.

The good thing about having a stable of backs is none of them get tired if used correctly and if you have an injury, just plug the next guy in. When Crowell went down last season who did we turn to? Brandon Harton. Are you serious? 5′5 and 160 pound dripping wet. Now we have the proper depth at RB to compete and possibly win the SEC.

He will transfer to South Florida or Central Florida or follow Ealey to Jacksonville since he is from Florida. If he had stayed at Georgia he would average 3 or 5 carry’s a game in mop up duty or been put on punt returns or kickoffs. This is a smart move to give him one last chance to see if he fit into Pro ball anywhere. Georgia wants their best players on the field and you being a senior want get you there anymore like it use to.
It is hard to accept the fact that for 95% of all college football players they are there to get a free education and their degree not to play football at the next level especially when you are only 5′6″ tall.
Good luck to you Carton and thanks for the time that you were at Georgia.

I agree for the most part, but this guy would have no idea what he is doing coming in. Blocking is more important for a RB at GT then actually running the ball. He would have to learn all of the plays and all of the different blocking schemes for each play, he would have to spend incredible amounts of time on timing, and he would be rotating at A-Back with at least 6 other guys. Tell me how you think he would get a lot of playing time.

And then, he could only go to Tech if they had a grad program that UGA does not have (no problem there), but then that would blos the Techies wad that Tech academics are so superior to UGA academics that there is no way he could transfer to Tech and compete academically…

Tech has a lot more then 6 plays and there are different blocking schemes for each play. If he is out of position at all it ruins the entire play. If he misses a block it ruins the play. If he mistimes an option then it ruins the play. There is a lot more going on for an A-Back then he is used to. He would probably have the length of fall practice to become an expert. He might get 10 carries on the season total.

I wish these kids would keep their noses clean (no pun intended) and taken advantage of the opportunity they were blessed with from God. Thomas could have been a very good back at UGA. Instead he chose to make poor decisions and was suspended from multiple games. Why? Can’t he understand that the education he is getting for FREE will propel him in life farther than any of those poor decisions. It just amazes me that Ealey could have been the premier back at UGA last year and instead he chose to give it all up because he couldn’t follow orders.
New proposed rule. No prospective NCAA football players can be signed until they complete two (2) years in the Marines, Army, Navy or Air Force. This new rule would ensure that they have been potty trained and are not a waste of a scholarship. Like the idea? Let the military weed out the bad ones.

He is not in contact with Valdosta State as of yet. His high school coach is talking with a number of schools that do want him. He left because he was not going to get on the field and looking at it as a business. He graduates in May from UGA. He is a scat back and needs be used where he performs best and Bobo is’nt doing that. So the only chance he has in making it to the next level is going else where. He’s not being “ran off”. He wants to return kicks (which is what he was recruited for to begin with) and there not going to use him there. I know Ga Southern is where everybody immediately thinks when a player from UGA or GT transfers, but Thomas wouldn’t be playing very much at Ga Southern this year. Our top 5 RB’s from last year are back this year and that doesn’t include the QB who will eat up a lot of carries. I agree that what Carlton brings to the table is perfect for the A-back position, but he’s not better than anything we already have. The coaching staff at Southern already struggles with getting the current players enough touches. So bringing in a player who is transfering because he doesn’t get a lot of touches just doesn’t make sense for either school.

Heard he is looking at a college in Jamaica so he can smoke his weed during breaks on the sideline. Crowell and Smith are looking there also! Smith just needs to grow his dreadlocks out!

The kid should think about DB at Georgia. That’s where they need help and the jump to the Pros would be easier from being a DB in the SEC than a running back from a lower division school.

Thank God!!!!
Now we don’t have to worry about Bobo running the smallest player on the field straight up the gut on 3rd and 2. Suspended for several games, didn’t give a crap about being a good DAWG, so good riddance!

I don’t get why anyone cares? Richt and Bobo have “missed” on every TB recruit we have gotten in the last 5 years – Ealey, King, etc. Crowell, not to disregard his antics, is a legit back. I’m hoping that Marshall and Gurley will be productive too. Combined, all we need is them to produce is 100 plus yrds a game. I think they will if the Oline has finally come together. Really, thats what our running game boils down to. Thomas, Harton, Samuel, etc are all pretenders.

Was always hoping to see great things from Carlton, but its an understandable move on his part. Very underutilized by the Dawgs offensive gameplans. Our playbook is too one dimensional in order to get the ball into space for players with Carlton’s skill set. Remember he was ranked higher coming outta HS than Igram. Would love to see him go to Valdosta State and play. But for all these Bama terds on here, comparing apples and oranges while referring to this as roster mgmt is just pure sensationalism at its best. Its a known fact across the nation that Bama abuses this tactic. Regardless, good luck Carlton…Bulldawg nation will still continue to follow your development.

You can’t win the SEC without rushing for 200+ yards a game.
Last 4 years, in SEC, we were ranked 5th, 7th, 10th, and 7th.
That’s why we don’t win championships.
that’s why we’re 2-9 against ranked teams in last 11.

There’s a lot of SEC teams that welcome 5 yard SEC rushers like Thomas. Not sure where he’ll end up, LSU, Alabama went after Mettenberger. Colorado got Gray. Jack St got 1100 yard, 6 yards per carry rusher Ealey. I’m sure Florida would welcome him, I’m sure Spurrier could figure out many uses for a fast, shifty, 5 yards per carry athlete who outrushed Crowell on a yards per carry basis.
Future bright for Thomas, yet another top producing player can’t gel with Mark Richt, Mettenberger, Gray, Ealey, now Thomas.

You are dumber than a bag of hammers. Richt didn’t even know Thomas was leaving until tuesday yet according to you, he ran him off.
He would have been way down the depth chart so he decided to leave. He is a senior so your idiotic comments about going to Florida or SC make no sense which is not surprising considering you typed it. He will transfer to a school at a level down from BCS so he does not have to sit out.
I don’t know why i waste my time responding to an idiot. Make sure you get someone to read my response to you and explain it to you.
