Orson Charles completes a drill under the watchful eyes of dozens of NFL scouts Monday during UGA Pro Day in Athens. (UGA photo by John Kelley)
ATHENS — Just back from a windswept day at UGA’s Pro Day. Winds were gusting up to 30 miles per hour across Woodruff Practice Fields as a dozen Bulldogs (including one one-time Dog) were put through the paces by NFL personnel.
According to UGA, 46 scouts and coaches showed up. Among them was Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith.
Most of them wanted to get a look at tight end Orson Charles. Or, more specifically, they wanted to see how Charles did running the 40-yard dash. Charles didn’t run the 40 at the NFL combine in Indianapolis the week before last because he said he simply “wasn’t ready.”
Apparently, Charles still wasn’t ready on Monday because he his “official” time was 4.75. AJC colleague Darryl Ledbetter was there and clocked Charles once with an unofficial 4.67 seconds. In any case, Charles was unhappy with the time — he said he routinely has run in the 4.5s — but was undeterred by it.
“That’s definitely something I wish I could take back and run again,” Charles told reporters. “I’m hoping that some guy calls me and says let’s run the 40 again because I’ll definitely show them.
Interestingly, fellow UGA tight end Aron White, who is getting much less pre-draft attention , ran a 4.73. But White couldn’t touch Charles’ 35 bench reps of 225 pounds. White had 22.
Georgia’s Bruce Figgins, who played fullback his final season in Athens, also worked out at tight end. All three looked very sharp in pass-catching drills.
Another prospect getting a lot of attention was cornerback Brandon Boykin. Boykin is recovering from a cracked fibula suffer in the Senior Bowl and was unable to work out for the NFL combine. He said he’s currently “85 percent” healthy and only benched on Monday. He said he should be healthy next month was planning a private workout for scouts in April.
Other players that worked out Monday included Justin Anderson, Brandon Bogotay, Drew Butler, Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones, DeAngelo Tyson, Blair Walsh and former UGA player John Knox.
D-Led and I both conducted a bunch of interviews afterward and we’ll be parceling those out over the next day or so. In the meantime, following is some data provided by UGA of some of the players that were tested Monday. All bench presses are with 225 pounds:
OL Justin Anderson
DB Brandon Boykin
TE Orson Charles
TE Bruce Figgins
DL DeAngelo Tyson
TE Aron White

I don’t get why Deangelo Tyson is being ignoed by mock drafts and the combine. He will play in the NFL even if he has to go the FA route, which seems unlikely.

While I appreciate Charles’ time at UGA, and thanks for being a Dawg, he was only an above average player. What happens to these five stars when Richt gets them, or are they actually three stars hyped by Rivals/Scout.

In relation to this article though and as a non-wasted post, good luck to all the dawgs in the draft! We’ll definitely miss Orson but hopefully Artie and Jay Rome can step up and keep up the productivity at the TE. It will be interesting to see how we fair on the OL with the loss of Cordy and Bean.

NO BASKETBALL CRUD IN THIS BLOG ABOUT FOOTBALL
_________________________________________________
Mark Richt’s players haven’t been competing at the measurables at the Combines. Why is that ? Because their times are NOT what Mark Richt announced to the world that they are annually, here. We all noted that the times were ALL LIES. Now, we see how much of lies they were. That is what I love about the NFL Draft. We get told the truth. The same will happen with Aaron Murray who is right on 6 feet and runs a 4.81 in 40-yard dash, about what Orson Charles does.
If we want to FIX the football program, we need to quit coddling the players and coaches as great, which they are NOT. And, we need to open competition – especially at QB.
This is when you can BRAG on our Players Coaches & Results :
When we Beat a team who ends up Top 10
When we Beat a team who ends up Top 25
When we don’t Lose teams who don’t end up Top 25
When our QB isn’t # 72 nation pass completion %
When we don’t end up # 6 SEC team in all polls
When we don’t have NCAA # 52 Total Offense
When we don’t go to 7-5 in bowl game record
When we don’t kick 26 players off team for 2012
When we don’t play :
2-10 Ole Miss at Sanford Stadium and
0-00 Georgia Southern at Sanford Stadium and
1-11 Florida Atlantic at Sanford Stadium and
3-09 Buffalo bills at Sanford Stadium and
Vandie with their losing record too and
vols with their losing record as well
These are the 5 Home Games other than lowly Georgia tek which we have at Sanford Stadium.
Fan apathy ? Negative posts abound by every poster to every blog ?
Duh.
When we do something, instead of a vocal minority trying to tell us how great we are # 6 in The SEC in every single solitary poll, fan apathy will not be the problem it is.
The schedule absolutely sucks for Season Ticket Holders like myself and the rest of us. We continue to water down our Home Schedules so our Season Tickets are against no one except Losing Record Opponents.

Thomas Brown, why don’t you sell your season tickets? If the pressure of being a fan is too much for your sore little heart, perhaps you should change teams and go with a program that has perennial winners with little competition, like maybe Ohio State. It would at least save you from getting carpal tunnel with all your excessive typing.

A little surprise about the forty time but still the guy is a player. I think OC can get off the blocks and make some plays also is a great blocker as well . and how many times do you see a TE 40 yrds down the field anyway .

I will admit that I was disappointed when Charles picked UGA over Florida, but I wished him well. I believed he could be another Aaron Hernandez. He seemed to have all of the atributes to be a great tight end, but I believe he under achieved at UGA. He should have stayed with the DAWGS for another year to further refine his skills.

Orson was a good college player but he made a mistake leaving school. I think we will be better at tight end this year. Rome is much faster and Lynch is a good blocker with good hands. Orson seemed to run out of control at times and didn’t seem to be a great blocker. I don’t think his time in the forty is going to improve very much. He seems a little heavy also.
Anyway he was a good Dawg and represented us well while in school. Hope he does well whatever he does.

He should have stayed in school for 1 more year because with a 40yd time of 4.75 the NFL means (NOT FOR LONG).That time moved him to a late round pick. He disappeared in our last 2 games against NFL TALENT so he better learn how to block & play on special teams. It’s the only way he will have long career in the NFL
