UPDATED WITH COMMENTS FROM COACH MARK RICHT . . .
ATHENS — I’ve been fielding a lot of questions lately about Georgia coach Mark Richt and his contract extension. Or, more specifically, why isn’t it done yet?
There are a lot of conspiracy theorists out there who are convinced the negotiations have become contentious and/or there might be some sort of hangup. I talked to Athletic Director Greg McGarity Thursday morning and he assures me there’s nothing amiss.
“No,” he said emphatically. “I was gone for 10 days. I was out of the country. So it’s just been a timing thing. Mark was gone for a while, too. He’s had some stuff going on. It’s just been a matter of us not being here. It’ll speed up here over the next 10 or 14 days. But there’s nothing to be concerned about.”
Richt reiterated that sentiment during a conference call with reporters Thursday afternoon.
“It’s going to happen in due time,” Richt said. “I don’t have any anxiety about it at all. There’s some different language in there. When you re-write a contract there’s just things in there that everybody’s got to feel comfortable with. So we’re just ironing out all those things. It’s more just crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s type of stuff. Greg and I are together on our discussions and everything’s going extremely well.”
McGarity confirmed that he and Richt have already agreed in principle on a new deal, which is expected to add at least three years on his current contract. That would extend his agreement with the Bulldogs through the 2016 season.
“I’ve always said that he’d be able to tell this freshman class that he’d be here for their time in the program,” McGarity hinted.
McGarity said he and UGA President Michael Adams briefed the athletic board on the negotiations during executive session of the last meeting on Feb. 5.
“There’s nothing new since then,” he said. “We just haven’t had the time to sit down and go over everything point by point. We’ll do that the next seven to 10 days.”
McGarity would not say if the new contract would include a raise. Including longevity bonuses, Richt earns about $3 million annually from Georgia.
“We’re going to be fair to everybody, but I’m not ready to talk about that,” McGarity said.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING UPDATE
It has been widely reported on fan websites that Georgia has settled on Sherman Armstrong as one of its strength and conditioning hires. While those reports are premature, McGarity confirmed that the speed specialist from Tampa is a strong candidate.
“Sherman is a candidate; we’ve got a lot of people who are candidates for it,” McGarity said of Armstrong, who currently runs V.A.S.T. Training in Tampa. “I can confirm that he was here last week interviewing. He had a great, great visit here. Everybody was very impressed. So, absolutely, he’s in the hunt. But we have not formally offered a job to anybody right now.”
Georgia has lost three members of its strength and conditioning staff since the end of last season. John Kasay retired, Keith Gray took a job with the Philadelphia Eagles and Thomas Brown accepted a job as a running backs coach at UT-Chattanooga. That leaves the Bulldogs with three full-time staffers — director Joe Tereshiniski and assistants Rex Bradberry and Tony Gilbert.
NCAA rules that go into effect this fall have capped the limit at five for strength and conditioning staffs. So Georgia’s in the market for two full-time hires. It appears now that one of those will used on a speed specialist.
“The bottom line is we brought Sherman in for that purpose, for us to go into that direction,” McGarity said.
Asked what the timeline is on completing the strength and conditioning staff, McGarity said, “A-S-A-P.”

suckitbeez Richt is 34-19 in the last 4 years just like Johnson. I would say that VT’s Beamer is better.

CMR is a player’s coach, beloved by his players (Top Recruiter), but fans dislike him for his lack of having the ( Killer Instinct ) . He is a shining light to 16,17 yr old kids who lack having the father figure at home that every kid desires. You can’t fault him for it , it’s who he is. There are many coaches like him in the NFL , they don’t get to stay long unless the wins out way the losses. Joe Gibbs being a great example has won championships. But the fact is this is his 11th year, no championship yet, but I think he’ll get it before he leaves Georgia! And if he doesn’t you can blame Adams, he has the 2nd most profitable program yet we still lack a special teams coordinator ! The championship winning schools use more of there expendable profits!

richt is a 2-3 loss coach, but the best uga can do. In a few years, Florida will own the SEC east as usual when muschamp rebuilds the roster with 5 star talent.

GT Bob – you really suck lemons, don’t you? Your only satisfaction in life is to come over to our board and try and rain on our parade…last year ~ top 10 ranked defense, SEC East Champions, another stellar recruiting class, one of the best QB’s in the league, and yet another boring drubbing of the Tech scumbags…… we lost to SC, true – they didn’t beat us, we beat ourslelves – it’s still a loss, but we were certainly not outclassed in that game. And the M. State game was disappointing. Boise State had a team filled with 19 5th year seniors – they were a solid club and LSU, before being shut down by Bama, was being called the greatest team to take the field in recent memory – and we more than hung with them for a half before their depth took over. I would not apologize for any of that – you wipes at Tech are the ones who need to look at your schedule and winning percentages and figure out what you have done over there recently. The fact is – you have nothing to add to this conversation – Tech turns in another top 100 recruiting class and still has that fantastic coaching staff intact that is running the greatest running offense in America that gets you nowhere year in and year out. And oh, there is that ACC title forfeiture thing you still are dealing with, isn’t there? Dawgs are climbing back up – Tech is sliding right down – there is order in the universe. A ten win season in the SEC in any year is not a bad thing – how many ten win seasons has Tech had in the past 50 years? Let me see, I need one hand minus two fingers to figure that one out.. The Dawgs are banging on the glass ceiling – Tech, as usual, is trying to dig its way into the ACC cellar. Good luck next year – you will most certainly need it. Under Richt, one and ten – can I get, an AMEN? Bottom line – TECH SUCKS!

Richt’s weakness as a coach is also what makes him such a great recruiter. He has a very laid back, hands off approach towards his players that appeals to young kids headed away from home for the first time. However. for those without discipline and/or time management skills this can spell problems.

We got to give Coach Richt the contracts extendsion. That because we won East and he keeps recruiting Dream Teams. With long term deal he can show recruits he be at UGA long time. That is goods for recruiting especially for talents and speed needed in SEC. Then Dawgs has talents to dominants league.

All this talk of still trying to hot sit Coach Richt is the bad fans that needing to be hot sitting. McG know what he doing in extends Coach Richt who know how winning with talents and Christian. But McG got to stands up and smack down Adams and his pointy heads that trying to choking the recruiting. Then Dawgs can sign better than Bammers without no Adams restrictoins.
Go Dawgs!

Richt holding out for more money based on last season? Better wait until the end of the 2013 season before a ten year extension, McGarity.
