UGA not only football program dealing with domestic violence issues

ATHENS – I was traveling yesterday when UGA announced it had decided on a two-game suspension for starting cornerback Sanders Commings at the start of next season.

Even though Georgia coach Mark Richt has avoided commenting on the subject so far, a spokesman told me Richt decided on the two games Wednesday after a series of meetings with Commings and conducting his own investigation into the matter. Commings, 21, was arrested by UGA police on Jan. 21 and charged with domestic violence/simple battery for allegedly hitting his former girlfriend.

Commings is scheduled for a March 22 arraignment before an Athens-Clarke County judge, so his legal case remains unresolved. Meanwhile, the incident is also being investigated by UGA as a possible violation of student conduct code. That review is ongoing, though I’ve reported on some of the interviews that were already available through the Freedom of Information Act. Those documents lead one to believe it the case might not be as cut-and-dried a case as the original police reports indicated.

Meanwhile, Georgia is not the only SEC team having to deal with a domestic violence issue. According to a report in the Orlando Sentinel today, Gators freshman tight end A.C. Leonard was arrested Wednesday night on domestic violence charges. Leonard was due to be released on his own recognizance Thursday and Florida coach Willi Muschamp has yet to comment on the situation.

Said spokesman Steve McClain: “Coach Muschamp is currently traveling and unavailable, but he will address the matter later today.”

There have been some other recent precedents as well:

On Feb. 3, Clemson dismissed wide receiver Joe Craig due to a domestic violence incident. However, apparently that was Craig’s second such charge. He was indefinitely suspended and ultimately missed three games last season due to the previous incident.

Conversely, Alabama’s Courtney Upshaw did not miss any playing time after he and his girlfriend were both arrested on domestic violence charges in 2009.

Which brings us to where we are today. Commings has already been issued a two-game suspension while his legal issues remain unresolved. So how do you guys feel about that? Should the Bulldogs have waited until his matter had run its course through the university and local legal systems? Do you trust Coach Richt’s judgment and/or did he get it about right? Is Georgia going too easy on Commings?

Intelligent, thoughtful comments only, please.

Is anyone really surprised that an Alabama player gets off “scott free” with an infraction? I mean, they have championships to win (at all costs). They can’t be bothered by common decency.

I think its a whole lot of nothing. Boyfriend/Girlfriend have a fight, nothing happens, get suspended for two games. From the reports I’ve read, he tried to ignore her, she started pushing him, and he moved her out of the way. No hitting, no bruses, not anything physical was wrong with her except her feelings were hurt. If these reports are correct then he is guilty until proven innocent.

On the other hand, if a man hits a women or does anything to harm a woman. Kick them off the team. If Commings had not been a football player, it would have just been a boyfriend/girlfriend argument with no AJC writing about it every day.

I can see a one game suspension just for the negative bull the team has to endure.

Commings should be on a very short leash. CMR should make it clear that another incident of violence against a women will result in an immediate dismissal. UGA football does not depend on any individual, especially a man who would hit, push or itimidate a female in any manner. Such actions from any man are reprehensible. I love UGA football but it takes a back seat to civility. CMR made his decision…if I had made the decision Commings would be on the phone with JSU or North Alabama seeking a roster position.

To be honest, we will never know if his punishment fit the crime, because we don’t know all the facts. about the alleged crime, or exactly how contrite SC is with the situation. But knowing CMRs track record with such offenses(Mettenburger), I would error on the side of he knows what he is doing.

The drug bust at TCU was quick and nobody was excluded , which is why so many got caught including the football team. The sad thing about it is most schools would have the same result’s if they checked without warning . I hope TCU will go light on the student’s and player’s at least on first offense because I would hate to know how many student’s at UGA and the UGA football team would test positive.

Let’s not pass judgment about the Bama situation. It might be that something similar happened. If the reports I’ve read, which echo the one above about him simply brushing her away after she was basically attacking him, are true, then I don’t see where even a suspension was warranted. The fact that Richt suspended him prior to his hearing with the police AND Student Judiciary is very telling. He obviously believes something similar to the above described event. Under those circumstance, I see the suspension as a PR move on the part of Richt. Fair to the player? Hard to say. We don’t know all of the details. Fair to the “victim”? Who knows, but let’s hope Richt doesn’t have to pull a Jim Boeheim on this one.

I say UGA should have waited till all the facts came out and the courts/school ruled.

Same thing happened with Tech player Robert Hall a few years ago and it turned out he actually was trying to avoid a confrontation with his GF, while leaving she tried to block a door he slamed while leaving and got hurt. he missed a lot of games because they had to wait till charges were dismissed.

Why two game now, season is far away to worry about suspensions unless it’s done just as a media front to say we care.

Football is a violent sport what do you expect these guys to be cheered for knocking some guy into the next county on Saturday. Then he leaves the field and becomes mild mannered Underdog. If any crime that injured someone meant a loss of scholarship I bet this wouldn’t go on. Also, the punishment is not determined by the coach or university. It is a set rule that must be enforced. Any coach trying to get around the punishment by a cover up is also suspended for one season with no pay. This would clean it up and fast.

Since you asked for intelligent, thoughtful comments only, I would say that based on past experiences, you won’t get very many hits on this blog. AJC sports blogs have devolved into one of the lowest denominators of social interaction. This is no reflection on the AJC or its writers. Instead, it is an indictment of the social network whether it uses a blog, twitter, or other form. I generally refrain from comment because the blog has become a magnet for mean-spirited poop that does nothing to add value to my day.

Now that I’m off my soap box, I trust coach Richt on these matters because he has the best interests of the student-athlete involved as well as UGA. Since I rasied a compliment to coach Richt, this will now attract more hate-filled nonsense and prove my point. I hope I’m wrong.

As I father I would kill any man that physically struck my daughter with his fist or open hand such as Sanders Commings has on more than one occasion, Mark Richt and the University should have expelled Sanders Commings immediately. As an alumni, the Ga football program has continued to cause harm to the school for many years now. Mark Richt approves of men who hit women, no other way to look at it especially when it is not Sanders Commings first time doing so.

You want Georgia Tech comments? Okay, starting defensive end Robert Hall was suspended indefinitely for the 2010 season when he was arrested for battery for fighting with his girlfriend, a Georgia Tech basketball player, over withdrawals from their joint account. Later in the year, the charges were dropped.

Richt did the right thing with Commings. It remains to be seen if he is reinstated for the 2 games, pending further legal actions.

Hall graduated in the spring of 2010 with a BS in Management, after the altercation occurred. He played the 2010 season as a graduate student.

No Domestic Violence classes?
No Anger Management classes?
No Disciplinary action from the Student Disciplinary Board?
Too early to know what really happened. More will come out in the next few weeks.

Until the Legal system is done Richt shouldn’t make a judgement on game suspensions.
The reports that have been submitted say he is innocent.
Like we would not expect that.
No guy wants to be hated for saying Commings did it and costing the team a player. The guy would not be able to stay at UGa for fear for his life.
There will have to be some of the afore mentioned classes if he is to stay in school.
He will likely put off those classes if he can during football season.
He would likely drop out of school after the season to go PRO. ie Ohio State players.

Women should be held accountable for violence too. If a woman lets her emotions make her scratch and throw punches, she might just be violent enough to find a gun or a knife. If she is in the wrong, she should be punished as harshly as any man would be.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/02/tide_commit_reuben_foster_tryi.html

———————————————————————————————————————————-

LaGrange, Georgia linebacker Reuben Foster is not only one of Alabama’s top recruits for the Class of 2013, he may also be one of their top recruiters. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound defensive star is rated the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by 247Sports and surprised recruiting analysts by committed to the Crimson Tide back in July of 2011. Since then, Foster has been public about his efforts to help recruit other elite players to the Tide’s 2013 recruiting class, including the one player in the nation ranked ahead of him by the recruiting services.

Fellow Georgia resident Robert Nkemdiche (pronounced kim-DEE-shee), a defensive lineman described by some analysts as a once-in-a-generation type player, is the unanimous choice by all four major recruiting services as the nation’s top prospect for the Class of 2013 and in recent weeks, Foster has told both ESPN and 247Sports that he is actively attempting to convince Nkemdiche to commit to the Crimson Tide.

“Me and Nkemdiche met for the first time not too long ago and he’s cool,” Foster told 247Sports’ Charles Power. “I could see myself playing with him. He’s a real good defensive end and one I’d like to play with on the next level.”

“He was talking about Alabama like he wanted to commit right there. I was like ‘do it.’ I think he’s going to commit to Alabama.”

Foster, who visited Alabama for their first Junior Day event in January, is coming off a spectacular junior season in which he compiled 185 tackles, including 34 tackles for loss and 18 sacks. While he continues to be pursued by other schools, including the home-state Georgia Bulldogs, Foster reiterated in both interviews that he is firmly committed to the Tide.

“I knew where I wanted to go,” Foster told ESPN’s Greg Ostendorf. “My family knew where I wanted to go. They love Alabama. I love Alabama. Plus, who wouldn’t want to get coached by Nick Saban and Kirby Smart? They’re NFL-style coaches.”

Alabama will host its second Junior Day event this weekend and while it’s not yet known whether Nkemdiche will attend the event, a number of the nation’s top junior prospects are scheduled to be in attendance. Alabama secured three commitments for the 2013 class at its last Junior Day event

Committing domestic violence, especially if you are a man hitting a women, is reflective of deeper, more troubling emotional issues….or a reflection of a serious lack of maturity. Either way, domestic violence (when a player puts his hands on a woman in a violent manner) should not be tolerated anywhere, but especailly on a college campus. Cummings and Leonard should not play football at Georgia or Florida next year. They need anger management counseling and a long period of time to “earn” their way back on the teams…..without a scholarship. I believe both forfited their right to be on an athletic scholarship when they hit a woman…for any reason. But….of couse….both deserve their time in front a a judge. I think Richt announcing his penalty before the situation is resolved is wrong. He should have waited until the final verdict on the case was in. In the meantime, the players (both Cummings and Leonard) should have been, and should be, suspended from all team activities….but keep their scholarships until the final verdict is in on their guilt or innocence. Richt, I believe, acted too soon and too little. He should have waited.

As a fan I am disappointed anytime something of this nature happens. The problem has a lot to do with our society these young men in many cases have watched this type of behavior in their lives, so they think its the correct way. One would like to think that by time they get to college they would have a clue about the rules of society they don’t. It is a difficult decision for CMR and now my coach Mr Muschamp try to teach or kick them to the curb. The problem with the latter is someone else will snatch that player up in a heartbeat and the youngman will have learned nothing. The other part of the equation is the young lady, so many of them today will get in the boys face daring them to act. Now as a 56 yr old married 37 years my generation was taught never hit a woman, walk away easier said than done. No matter what decision these coaches make someone is going to complain that they didn’t do enough or they did to much.

You guys crack me up about Saban running players off but NONE of you know WHY he runs a player off…maybe he not BEHAVING Properly or is breaking University rules.

You guys cannot have it both ways.

By the way, he did run off law breakers his first year at Alabama, he discovered a text book issue and suspended players indefinetly without waiting for the SEC or NCAA to make a ruling, and he sat players for not attending classes all in that first year. He got their attention and made them understand they are there to get an education and to play football.

No reason to pat myself on the back. The damn ring I wear on my finger that says 1992 National Champions that I earned as a G.A. says enough. Not sure many of you have had that opportunity.

You just hate it because I post the truth, counter the biased Recruiting Blog written by Carvell with facts, ( by the way….3 websites around the south have posted his(Michael Carvell) picture as a HOMER recruiting blogger) that the AJC editors have allowed him to get away with posted partial truths, the fact that graduating, winning, and allowing your kids to leave the school with an opportunity to do well in life after football means something.

Any man( let alone an athlete) strikes a woman I have little patience for.

Got to love the word you UGA fans use….”TROLL”….but when a negative (often done on the Recruiting blog) artice is written about Saban and Alabama you guys are the first to run that major pie hole trap and make up all kind of crap that is just untrue.

If you guys posted legitimate arguments instead of made up facts you would be better off.

These are facts:

Alabama has won 3 RECOGNIZED National Championships since UGA’s last in 1980

Alabama has seen its graduation rates among football and basketball rise since Saban/Grant arrived while UGA has seen their numbers fall.

Alabama has more first round draft choices( or will have after this NFL draft) than UGA since Saban arrived.

Nick Saban is 3-2 against Richt

The truth hurts but facts make your argument.

“He was talking about Alabama like he wanted to commit right there. I was like ‘do it.’ I think he’s going to commit to Alabama.”

Alabama will host its second Junior Day event this weekend and while it’s not yet known whether Nkemdiche will attend the event, a number of the nation’s top junior prospects are scheduled to be in attendance. Alabama secured three commitments for the 2013 class at its last Junior Day event.

He then went on to recruit the top class in America, played in the SECCG, beating UGA in Athens during that infamous Blackout game.

But looking at year 10 plus for Mark Richt he loses to Colorado( who fired their coach) and UCF while finishing 6-7….whoopie….I guess he ran out of Donnan players….

“We certainly do not tolerate this type of behavior at the University of Florida.”

So….I what else do you have to “guarantee”?

In every case, the facts must be examined! It was reported and validated by witnesses that Commings was approached by his girlfriend who grabbed his arm screaming that he did not spend enough time with her. She was making a scene and Commings pulled her arm away and shoved her. All this will have to open up in court. Who knows, he may even be acquitted of all charges. Perhaps there is more to it than this which is why Coach Richt decided to move and suspend Commings for the first two games. Coach Richt would not do anything to harm his players. He gets advice from UGA lawyers before making a move. He has to be very careful with the NCAA gorilla who is eager to pounce on you at the drop of a hat. Are they inconsistent with their pouncing? There must be a little fire along with the smoke, otherwise, I do not believe the Coach would have suspended him for the two games. It seems that the legal system should run its course before being suspended. Again, Coach met with him so there must be something to the allegations. If that is the case, then what is the difference between hitting a woman and borrowing a little money from your friends wallet without their knowledge? One gets slapped on the wrist for hitting a woman, the others get kicked off the team! None of them were tried or proven guilty, as yet. As always, with most coaches, the better the athlete and the more the team needs them determines punishment. If guilty, they should all be kicked off the team. A Felony is a Felony. Anyone with any knowledge of the legal system knows that their is critical evidence that will be withheld until the court date, so I will wait to make a judgment until legal affairs and the courts make their decisions. This being said two games is fair, for the kid putting himself in the situation. We must also be aware that Coach Richt is privy to information that we don’t have, and has better information to make a judgement than we. The two games must mean he isn’t completely innocent, or it is just the minimum for the arrest and more could possibly come. I think that he should also have to go through sensitivity and anger classes, just for the circumstances. Innocent or guilty, if done right, they make him a better person.

The problem here goes deeper than just Commings and domestic violence. There seems to be a character issue for college athletes. I’m not going to blame Richt, we here a lot about the bad apples, but we rarely here of his successes, which far out weigh the bad ones, with his college version of the all-pro dad. I think more schools should look into this, but also there needs to be something done before the kids come to college. Parents need to take more responsibility for their kids, but I think high school athletics should spend more time on turning out more complete people and students, than just winning.

I understand wanting to protect women and if he did strike her he needs to be gone but there is a whole lot of “he’s done this before” but not record of it. A.C. Leonard did a very stupid thing which is inexcusable. I am pleased that Will Muschamp suspended him from the team. This puts Coach Champ in the limelight because he has been preaching discipline at UF since he became the Head Football Coach. If all of the charges are accurate, Coach has no choice but to permanently boot Leonard from the team. If he doesn’t he will look like meyer who was not very strong on discipline. Athletes do not deserve special treatment. Leonard needs to pay big time. I do not care what they do at another school in this matter. UF needs to be unwavering.

I am still not sure Richt needed to make a call yet. Not enough facts are in. I think Richt could have waited. He might get beat up on the blogs but that will happen either way. Richt should have said He will wait until more evidence came to light. Richt didn’t want to seem soft on a serious situation.

If this would have happeneded to Ealey, Ealey would have been kicked off the team. Truth is, no depth at defensive back means Commings can get away with stuff that should have gotten him booted from the team. Once again, Mark Richt’s favortism, and entitlement policy overrules merit. Unfair to guys like Ealey and Mettenberger, but Richt is Richt, and continues to play favorites.

I don’t know Sanders extremely well, but based on my personal interactions w/ him (downtown), he has never struck me as somebody prone to violence (off the field). So, when this report surfaced, I was a bit shocked. However, I was not surprised at all to read conflicting information that perhaps suggests he is not guilty of the charges. Based on the “facts” that I’ve read, it doesn’t look like a battery. If she was physically attacking him, he doesn’t have to take it. He has a right to use reasonable force to defend himself, even if she is a girl. Pushing her hand away from his person certainly seems reasonable. If he slapped her to the ground, that would be a different story altogether, but nothing in the reports suggests anything that severe. Let’s not forget that in downtown disputes, parties are often intoxicated and act irrationally. That can go for the “victim” too. Bottom line: while nothing technically forbids you from rushing to judgment, the notions of fairness and decency should dissuade you from doing so, especially w/ charges such as these.

As for CMR, I don’t think it’s anybody’s place to second-guess his disciplinary decisions. While Sanders might not be guilty of this crime, this has still caused a substantial distraction to the team. Nothing in CMR’s history suggests that he is unfair w/ his players. There are always factors at play aside from technical violations of the law.

I think that Coach Richt is suspending SC because it is policy that a minimum 2 game suspension be served if a Student Athlete is arrested and regardless if SC is Innocent or Guilty, he was arrested, hence the 2 game suspension. I do believe, based on CMR record, that if SC had hit this girl, he would be GONE.

Yet another example of why I continue to support CMR. Is he the BEST coach in the SEC – probably not; but I would certainly hope that if my kid wanted to play football at a good program, I hope that he would choose UGA. CMR does look after the kid’s best interest & sometimes that goes contrary to winning football games & championships. While he cannot babysit each athlete, he certainly demonstrates true, consistent leadership.

Kudos to AJC for finally putting UGA football infractions in perspective by also including other university’s issues as well. AJC has always placed a spotlight on UGA (rightfully so) because of the proximity to Athens. However, if anyone thinks this type of stuff is not happening everywhere, at most football programs, they are delusional.

From what the ajc reported from two eye witnesses former UGA player Jeremy Luongo and another student, it seems as though his “girlfriend” was theone doing the hitting and finally Commings shoved her off of him. If this is in fact the case then I don’t think the suspension is warranted. I know you are not suppossed to put your hands on a woman, but, when that woman is physically abusing you and I don’t care how big you are, how long are you supposed to take it?

The assumption that Sanders hit her is some people’s first instinct. What those do not probably understand is that a woman can be the aggressor. Any men who have been on that side of it know that when you get hit you have to defend yourself. Not punch back but you can’t just stand there and take a wild woman’s punches. Women are just as guilty in these situations and too many times the man is blamed for something he didn’t do.

Knowing Richt he probably already knows the outcome of the court hearing. What good would a two game suspension do if the kid is in jail game day? This is the ingredients of why Georgia is a second tier team in the SEC. You mention Florida like that was a measuring stick. Great coaches don’t seem to want to stay at Florida, and right now their program is even worse than Georgia’s. These kids are uncoachable and the only teams you are going to beat are other teams with uncoachable talent that is worse than yours. Watch Vandy and learn, they are passing the Dawgs this year, which makes about a half dozen that have gone by them as they babysit uncoachable superstars.

I hope Commings does not screw the rest of his time at ga. or in the NFL. I am getting the feeling that MR is not driving these players to practice more on the off season. Lets be honest here. There were multiple witnesses that say all that Sanders did was pull away from her when she grabbed his arm. He did not ever lay a hand on her or hit her. So people need to stop making it into something it is not. All of the witnesses names and statements are out there. Google is your friend if you actually take the time to look it up. Oh lordy,

Chip mentions that Courtney Upshaw of Alabama got no suspension. Well of course not. The reason is that the charges were dropped because he did nothing wrong. His girlfriend pulled up and Upshaw happened to be talking to another girl in the parking lot. She came up and slapped the fool out of him and started attacking him. He simply held her down to keep her from hitting him some more. A campus cop came by, saw the altercation, and just arrested both of them. The girl’s dad said his daughter was completely at fault and said he “felt sorry” for Upshaw. Next time you should try telling a little bit of the truth. Also the Upshaw incident was 2 years ago. Sheesh.

According to a police report, Leonard shoved the woman to the ground, causing her to hit her head on a dog cage. She told police Leonard had told her to leave the apartment they shared.
The arrest report says Leonard grabbed the woman by both feet and pulled her out of the apartment when she refused to leave.

and when he couldnt get her out that way he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her out. Police report says she had chunks of hair missing.

I trust coach Richt’s judgement. I did think he would wait until at least the Office of Student Conduct had finished their process. Apparently coach Richt has enough info to make the call.

Make sure you have all the facts before you sentence the young man. Coming from a source who has already briefed the ACCPD, UGA and all other involved parties of said sources first-hand account of the incident, there was in fact, no abuse delivered by Commings other than a simple shove after the female began striking him with blows to the face. This “shove” didn’t knock the young woman to the ground, nor did it cause physical harm of any kind.

Everyone is quick to pounce and spread negativity, but in the end nobody knows the facts yet. Once all the details are released and this issue is resolved I can see the recently levied supsension being revoked.

Quite possibly, but, as Sanders is of legal drinking age I don’t see where that would really fit either. I think the suspension was levied as a PR move moreso than anything else. I think clarity will come before the end of next week.

STILL, I’m mad at the AJC for reporting that this “probably” was not the first report of domestic abuse against him since a police report showed the accuser checked “1-5″ times she’d been abused on the report. That’s RECKLESS reporting and another example of the digital media gone wild. Just be sure to sell more ad space AJC, no matter who it hurts.

I call out the DAs on here, thats what I do. If you dotn like it dont post something stupid and it wont get called out. Its that easy

FYI its pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together on this one.

Every witness in the group that was there said she went after him and he pushed her off of him so that he could remove himself from a bad situation. (Not hit her in the face like every troll claims)

Ppl saying he did hit her were only saying what SHE told them when she called them to pick her up. AKA they werent even there.

So based on that its pretty easy to say with confidence he is innocent and charges will be dropped.

Also police said she had no marks on her. If a 200LB D1 player punches you in the mouth you are going to feel it.

Les had a melt down before the game, go check the LSU message boards about it. Les flipped out benched starters and fired the OC and called his own plays. All bc they wanted Lee to start. They proved to him the team is more important than one coach that night.

Guilty until proven innocent sums it all up. I guarantee what happenned was this; Sanders and his lady friend get into a verbal disagreement, words fly, she says I own you I can do anything I want and one wrong move and you will lose your football career come on do something, Sanders avoid physical contact, Lady friend continues screeming furiously because no reaction infuriates her even more, Lady friend connects with an open hand to the face, Sanders moves again to avoid all the while not letting his emotion be shown, every way he turns she jumps, he tries to leave and she blocks his way screeming for him to do something and calling him names like “little man” or “weak punk” or “scared of a girl”, until finally in an effort to remove himself of the situation he puts his hands on the outside of her arms and moves her so that he can get past, she falls on the ground screeming abuse and calls 911. Men should never ever touch a woman, and if they do she better not be related to me or I will gladly trade my life of freedom for revenge…..but there also needs to be some level of skepticism if a claim of abuse s made with no visible signs. I mean an enraged football player like Sanders Cummings physically abuses a woman and there are no marks left? If I were to move my wife out of the way calmly or not she would have at least a red mark where I moved her out of the way and I do not play sports. I think this young man is a victim here, and he will have nobody to back him up…not his friends, not his coach, not the fans and certainly not the media. We need this young man playing football at UGA and I just cant believe that he is not suspended over allegations that are not even close to being proven. Ill bet the suspension is just a reaction to the media attention and the negative press UGA would recieve for not punishing an OBVIOUS WOMAN BEATER….wait she wasnt beaten…..then an OBVIOUS WOMAN ABUSER….wait there was no sign of abuse…..

Chip, this is below your usual standards for whatever reason. Slow day? Busy? Our opinion is worthless. Richt knows more about this any of us, the police, the D.A. etc. He IS a fair man and I am sure this is fair. I know about the majority of these domestic violence things. The womans emotions typically get the best of her and she calles the police and down the road after things have cooled down and some rational thinking takes place, charges are dropped, the woman does not go to court or she goes in front of the judge to get the charges dropped. Thius is most likely muchado about nothing other than an argument in public. From all accounts he did not strike her and she actually was being physical with him and he responded by pushing her away. It happens all the time. We were not there. He is human and peoples instincts when being touched inappropriately is to get them off of you. Nothing wrong with that if it is not excessive. MANY men knock the crap out of their women for something like that and that is wrong. This young man apparently did nothing but push her away from him so she couldnt CONTINUE to disrespect and be physical with him. If a woman is attacking me, grabbing me and will not stop, I will snatch my arm away and if she is running her mouth out of control and getting in my face and grabbing me and will not stop and pushing me , at some point if she will nto stop my reaction is goign to be to finally get her off of me and if I have to push her off of me, that is nto out of line as long as SHE DOES NOT GET INJURED. Did this woman get injured? If not, this is a bunch of crap. This man was provoked. Ive been there. Women try to provoke you when they are upset and not getting there way. They wont let it go. They follow you, provoke you, instigate, get in your face, say terrible things, grab you, hit you, push you, jump on you and at some point, you are getting angrier and angrier and while many men will snap and knock the stew out of them, he did not harm her or hit her. That took restraint.

This is muchado about nothing Im telling you. When this goes to court, IF it goes to court, nothing much will happen to him, if anything. Richt may have been too harsh and reduce this down the road….I dont care if you agree or not. You werent there. We dont know nothing. Its NOT always the mens fault and contrary to some of the opinions, sometimes women do need some hands put on them when they are acting a fool. Pushing someone off of you, a female, is not OK? Let some chick acting all crazy running her mouth put her hands on you and grab you and see if you think pushing her off of you after a few minutes is unacceptable.

People say one thing but when under pressure and actually faced with the situation, the same people might strangle a woman. Some people kill when put in certain situations. Everybody is capable of even murder put in the right situation….everybody. Do not be so quick to judge and cast stones is the point. Same situation you might have snapped and done a lot worse….

LSU had one drive that started on their side of the filed besides the garbage TD. AKA they had great field position and didnt have to do much to score. 2 TDS without the offense and then set up with 2 more TDS inside our own redzone.

Hopefully no one here succumbed to that emotion ..emotion is a passion, it’s a fire that Burns like a red-hot poker thirst in your heart and brain. Sometimes it’s instantaneous and you can act reflexively. Have you ever said something and instantly regretted saying it? Have you ever hurt someones feelings on purpose? Even adults have a hard time controlling their emotions. Sanders Cummings may regret his actions for many reasons. Let’s hope it’s not just his football career. I wonder if his actions hurt and embarrassed him for hisown lack of discipline. I don’t know what happened and neither do any of you unless you were there. Don’t. Condem this young man until all the facts come out. Hopefully he will grow from this and move on with his life. If you don’t understand this, then you probably have a problem. My earlier comment has more than proven true. What a bunch of losers. If you aren’t a true Bulldog fan you don’t belong here. I’m tired of having these blogs crashed by morons that live vicariously through their football teams. SO WHAT if your University fielded a football team that won the last National Championship. Does that instantly make every fair weather fan a better person than fans of other teams? I don’t think so. You sat and watched a game and had ZERO impact on the outcome of that game. All you did was watch. If you stepped onto a football field you would end up in a hospital in the first 30 seconds. So stop the WE crap and go back where you belong.

CMR makes the decisions that are necessary for UGA to exceed in morals. Frankly, we aren’t Alabama, nor Florida, nor Clemson, we are UGA. what is the difference. We have a good christian coach that not only helps kids play, but guides them to be decent law abiding citizens. Even though Sanders is a good kid, even if he didn’t do something, he shouldnt’ve been in the situation to get in trouble. But with CMR helping him, he’ll make it. Yes if two games is what CMR says he deserves, then it is what it is. Good luck Sanders and GO DAWGS!

I wonder how many journalist and reporters at AJC are guilty??? Have you ever known anyone that was verbly abusive to their spouse on a regular basis? Emotional and mental abuse are still Domestic Abuse. People have killed themselves because of this too. Some people are just stone-cold and don’t care. And as 99% of UGA students……Commings had been drinking. Did I read where the guy is 21? Holy toledo batman!!!!! he’s of legal drinking age!!! And why is this a crime?? He DID NOT hit his girlfriend as originally reported. And all, including Athens police who reported otherwise, should be fired, terminated for falsely reporting the domestic violence charge. We are the # 2 school in the nation in CASH, profits.

We are # 6 at GOING OUT AND PAYING OUR FOOTBALL COACH who produces these monies for our school.

The fact is that 48 other schools have actually gone out and BETTERED themselves better than we did in replacing Jim Donnan with Mark Richt.

We are LAGGING BEHIND.

Other schools are getting better, and they are PASSING US BY.

And, over the last Six (6) Seasons now, he has

LOST 25 GAMES, more than 4-Losses a season average

for 6 years.

It was 2005 when Mark Richt last “won” The SEC, yet Eight (8) Seasons ago now this up-coming 2012 season, in 2005 Mark Richt IN FACT ENDED UP # 3 of just SEC teams IN EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY POLL.

Win percentage recently for Mark Richt, TODAY NOT HISTORY, it has been now 8 seasons ago since he last “won” The SEC ending up in fact # 3 in The SEC according to EVERY single solitary poll there is for the season 8 seasons ago now in 2005.

-he does not beat the teams with better talent # 173
-he does not beat the cupcakes # 43 beat cupcakes
-he does not beat equal talent teams either # 158
-he does not win bowl games # 32
-he does not graduate his players or have high APR # 81
-he gives out scholarships to 26 great 4-star recruits who transferred from this 2012 UGA team
-he avg # 8 recruiting class

# 1 in NFL Draft Picks and # 43 beating cupcakes
# 1 in NFL Draft Picks # 158 beat equal talent teams
# 1 in NFL Draft Picks # 173 beat superior talent

GRUESOME COACHING
GREAT RECRUITING

And, his PROBLEMS are on OFFENSE and always have been.
We don’t do much on special teams, but that is by design and he says he is going to quit giving scholarships to walk-ons who only play special teams without a bloody coach to even teach them diddle-e-squat. I find that hard to believe. He whined to this AJ-C that he was not going to put AJ Green back there to return punts and kick-off because he “did not want him to get INJURED.”

That’s what he said.

Now, everything is going to be fixed by not just playing walk-ons but actually putting our best players out there on Special Teams 2012.

You want better special teams than # 80 in the nation last season ?

Make Todd Grantham coach special teams AND defense.

That will leave glaringly Mike Bobo and Mark Richt with their abysmal OFFENSE as to why we LOSE to cupcakes, lose to equal talent teams, and lost to superior talent teams the DEAD LAST WORST in the nation at all 3.

CMR may have acted too quickly on this situation. Comments from two observers of this fracus indicated the girl was the aggressor. CMR gains little by taking action before the court system and/or the Student Disciplinary Board, but if Commings is vindicated by these boards, CMR has stepped in it. Also, his action may prevent the Student Board from looking at this situation with open minds since the coach has already found Commings guilty.

There are players that are chosen and given the red carpet treatment who do not deserve this as they have not gotten it done in the classroom and have no respect for someone’s property or the law. This is my point! We continue to recruit the wrong type of athlete as we have kids that are making the grades like everyone else and getting it done on the field and staying out of trouble. Mark Richt lost 4 games this past season, 4 games. You have a problem that David Shaw lost half as many games at Stanford last season ? You wish Mark Richt lost half the games he lost.

Over the last 8 seasons, Mark Richt has lost 30 games to teams with worse or equal talent – which is nearly 4 games a season lost to worse or equal talent teams.

Your URL Link provided does not list for example Pete Carroll or Jim Tressel. Do you really think that Mark Richt has been better here at UGA than Pete Carroll or Jim Tressel, either 1 ?

1.Les Miles has certainly been far superior in his time in The SEC than Mark Richt. 2.Nick Saban has been far superior in his time in The SEC than Mark Richt. 3.Urb an Me yer has been far superior in his time in The SEC than Mark Richt. 4.Bobby Petrino has been far superior in his time in The SEC than Mark Richt. Even 5.Gene Chizik and 6.Tommy Tuberville, over these last 8 seasons, have done far superior here in The SEC than Mark Richt. Mark Richt over these last 8 years, just looking at what other coaches here in The SEC did over the same last 8 years, is the # 7 best coach in The SEC over these last 8 years. What the blazes is so special about that ?

What is so special about Mark Richt over these last 8 years, that you think Coaches by the Numbers presents a NEGATIVE view of Mark Richt stating as they do that Mark Richt is the # 35 best coach at his school over these last 8 years ?

And, what is so special about what Mark Richt has done these last 8 years here in The SEC compared to ALL these other coaches and what they have done when they were in The SEC ?

And, what is so special about Mark Richt that you have to take names OFF THE LIST of best coaches over these last 8 years such as Pete Carroll and Jim Tressel to make it appear as though Mark Richt did BETTER than either one of them, either ?

The facts, as presented by NOT ME but Coaches by The Numbers, shows that Mark Richt has LOST 30 games over these last 8 years against teams with equal or worse talent than he has had here.

As for boykin, yeah right, a 5 feet 9 inches tall cornerback is going to be a shut down corner in the NFL because he wasn’t even one of the All-SEC Cornerbacks, isn’t going to register any 4.34 speed in the NFL combines, is he ? And, he certainly plays off his receivers, doesn’t break up many passes, nor make many interceptions even against all these cupcakes we play nowadays at my alma mater, as he is not physical enough. And, you want to run in here, change your handle to boykin (history here when you finally did change your handle to boykin), and declare him a shut-down corner in the NFL, when no one has ever accused him of being a shut-down corner for us. And he absolutely didn’t win any of the last 7 games in a row Mark Richt has lost vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 and he absolutely didn’t win any of the last 9 games in a row Mark Richt has lost vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25.

[...] 6. UGA is not the only school dealing with domestic violence charges. Recently, Bulldogs’ defensive back Sanders Commings was arrested for domestic violence, and Mark Richt has suspended him for the first two games of the season next year. However, Florida tight end AC Leonard was recently arrested for the same charge.  We’ll see what Will Muschamp decides to do. [AJC] [...]

I read that 3 eye witnesses at the scene reported that comings and his girlfriend were arguing and he began to walk away from her, she then grabbed him by the arm and he kinda of shrugged her off of him. She apparently was angry with him for not spending time with her. The witnesses say that he at no time struck her any any way. Sounds like a college girl stalking a football player to me, and out of jealous rage, tried to make Sanders pay for not showing her enough attention. Ball players beware of stalker type girls. This again, is what I read, it does not prove that this is the truth or not, but may have something to do with the light, 2 game suspension.

What I find interesting about the Upshaw story is that even though a police officer gave a sworn statement that he personally witnessed Upshaw “chase her down” and rough her up a bit, the girls father calls Saban, asking him not to suspend a football player.

It strikes me that it was a needless exersize from both men.

No ?

That explains why Nick Saban at Alabama has Won 81 % of his games against all competition the last 8 years, while Mark Richt has won 69 % of his games against all competition the last 8 years ? Explains that Nick Saban has Won over the last 8 years, at Alabama 90 percent of the games he played where he had the Superior Talent, based upon Scout.com’s rankings the previous 4 years before game time, while again Mark Richt has Won only 75 % where we had Superior Talent the last 8 years at game time. Or, that explains why Nick Saban at Alabama has Won 74 % of all his games over the last 8 years, at Alabama against equal
Talent measured as within 10 of the Scout.com rankings of Nick Saban, while Mark Richt is barely over .500 at 54 % only against teams with equal Talent over the last 8 years here ?

You pick on the silliest of points about Nick Saban, while he has 2 of the most recent BCS NC Titles, and while our coach is so pedestrian by direct contrast.

UGA pays Mark Richt $ 2,900,000.00 in total compensation, not counting bonuses and not counting his truck ads which he would not have were he not the head coach for UGA. This makes him the 6th highest paid SEC coach. We are the 2nd most profitable athletic department in the nation. We have lost the last 7 games in a row vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 and we’ve lost the last 9 games in a row vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25.

Why we cannot pay a little more, and have a coach equivalent with our status, who can beat the top teams, is because we have a fanbase of Bible-Thumpers who think that if they tried to enhance our position nationally, that they would be viewed as not UGA Bulldog Football Program Fans, when they want, by direct contrast, is to make this job just as easy as pie for Mark Richt – have no expectations and allow no posts that point out the obvious short-comings over the last 8 years – especially in comparison with the teams we constantly lose to with Inferior Talent or Equal Talent.

They refer to posts like that as having our heads up the backsides of coaches who do far better than he. But, of course, we should be satisfied with 27 other teams winning 10 games last year along with us, and us the dead last worst of the 27 teams with 10-Win Seasons 2011 with 4 Losses.

If Lemay sits all year long, we are hosed for 2013 plus, I’m not so sure that we don’t have to have Lemay with Murray in order to get 1 QB who can win a big game.

For the record I am a Big Lemay fan, but talk of what he has to do, or can do, else we need to fire the coach for some hypothetical situations that might happen year after next, is a bit of a reach. QBs come and go. I am not even sure Lemay is going to hold off some guys we have coming in. The first thing he needs to be is to become the actual back-up QB. Then he can earn some playing time, when it’s available. As they always have. I guess it’s anyone opinion as to how meaningful it is depending on the situation.

Secondly, Why would you fear that Richt would sit a QB that was capable of winning games needlessly, when he has shown no history of doing that, and In fact has shown the opposite?

DawginLex

February 20th, 2012

He sat Shockley against UT in 2004 until he finally let him play and almost pull the game out. Cost us the East

He sat Mason all year and gave him no reps even when it was obvious Murray needed some bench time

I get that Lemay might not be all that but i still say the QB position is a big concern for me going into 2012 if Murray is going to play all the meaningful snaps.

AltamahaDawg

February 20th, 2012

“He sat Shockly”? Odd way or referring to the starter not starting a big SEC game, and getting in later. But anyway……..That’s the example of ignoring a QB?

I suppose a fellow could pick apart a specific single game as to not bringing in a guy exactly in the right series, (especially in hindsight), but I think there is also a couple of example of bringing Shockley in and the game went worse, too. So who can say. As I recall, thier freshmanQB tearing up our defense was how that game was lost. I don’t remember that game as an obvious case of “sitting” the back up QB.

( I couldnt go to both so I went to that one and missd the LSU game. Smart move, huh?)

And Mason did play last year in several games..But, He obviously never proved that he could alter the outcome of a game, though. I am assuming if he could have, he would have been in there.

I wanted results in 2010, and all the results were losses.

I wanted results in 2009, and those we ostensibly all losses too.

I wanted results in 2008, and instead got 31 to nothing at half, after # 1 ranking every single solitary poll, and then 42 unanswered points in the 2nd game that season, and the 3rd and only other opponent, 29 unanswered points. It was gruesome. All we beat, being # 1 in the nation was a Michigan State team who beat not 1 single team finishing in the top 25 too.

in 2004, versus UT, David Greene was off his game. Shockley was on his game. Shockley came in and almost brought us back. I think the score was 20-14 or something like that. It wasn’t the fault of the defense.

Last year, there were numerous times to give Mason relevant reps in game situations against teams other than cupcakes. He never got the chance.

Murray is a DGD but the results are obvious. He gets the yips in tight games against better competition.

We need a open QB competition in the spring and the fall and I am advocating some sort of platoon system(Yes I know people say it does not work). If Richt has the kind of relationship with his players that we all believe he does, he should be able to work it out for the better of the team.

Especially if we are winning.

AltamahaDawg

GReat Lex. Then you disagree with the strategic judgement about timing on THAT day. Fine. But DJ had been used quite regulary for 2 years BEFORE that, so that is not an example of how RIcht would not like to give back up significant playing time in preparation.

In fact even bringing up DJ proves the exact opposite point of your assertion that Richt would be likely to sit somebody like Lemay on the bench all year. It’s almost the exact same situation as we had then.

AltamahaDawg

February 21st, 2012

I don’t know if people really say platooning doesn’t work, in general. I think that’s something that situational. Bringin in Tebow on 3rd and short was pretty effective. Murray sure can’t plow through the line behind left guard. If we had somebody who could do that from the shortgun, nobody would say it doesnt work. IF you are talking about bringing in somebody that offers a different style or skill, then I am all for that.I think everybody would be, BUT If you are talking about platooning Murray and his less capabale of winning the game but same type back-up, then I can’t see the upside to that. And I don’t buy into fixing your starters mistakes by taking him out at the very most critical times of the game and increasing your chances of losing anyway.
