UPDATED: Thomas Brown leaves Georgia to coach running backs at UTC

ATHENS — Thomas Brown has left Georgia to accept a coaching position at Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Brown, a strength and conditioning assistant with the Bulldogs, will coach running backs for the Mocs, an FCS (formerly I-AA) program. The official announcement was made Wednesday by UTC head coach Russ Huesman.

“Really, when I started last January, my original plan was just to work as hard as I could to help Georgia win games as a strength,” said Brown, who was busy packing and handling domestic affairs at his home in Buford Wednesday afternoon. “I wasn’t really thinking about anything beyond that other than to see how I fit into college coaching and learn as much as I could about the game.”

As it happened, Mocs offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield contacted Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo this past week to ask about Brown. Brown visited the Chattanooga campus this past weekend and agreed to take the job earlier this week.

“We ended up exchanging emails for a couple of days, then I went up there to meet with them,” Brown said. “Obviously it went well. It’s a good opportunity for both of us and I’m looking forward to getting to work”

Brown, a Tucker native, was a four-year UGA letterman as a running back. He returned to his alma mater in January of 2011 to help the Bulldogs with their off-season conditioning and weight training.

Brown becomes the third member of director Joe Tereshinski’s strength staff to leave in 2012. John Kasay, who was working part-time, returned to retirement as planned in January. Longtime assistant Keith Gray left the first week of February to take a similar position with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.

That leaves Tereshinski with just two full-time assistants: Rex Bradberry and Tony Gilbert. New NCAA legislation that will go into effect in August limits to five the number of full-timers on strength staffs. So Georgia is expected to hire two more assistants. Some strength staffs, such as Alabama’s, have as many as eight assistants.

Brown said Georgia fans need be worried about the state of the Bulldogs’ strength and conditioning program.

“No concerns at all,” he said. “I could see how some people might think that with three of us leaving. But all three of us had different situations. We’re heading in the right direction right now. We turned things around last year and have a lot of talented young guys coming back. The Georgia strength program is fine.”

Brown was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft after rushing for 2,646 yards and 23 touchdown for the Bulldogs from 2004-07. He played for the Falcons and Cleveland Browns before a knee injury sidelined his football career.

Brown holds a UGA degree in speech communication. He and his wife, Jessica, have two children, Orlando and Tyson.

WR Coach Tony Ball played at UTC (77-80) with current UTC Head Coach Russ Huesman. “We are excited about adding Thomas to our staff,” stated Huesman. “He is a bright young coach who played at a high level. He brings NFL experience and that will certainly help our talented group of running backs.”

Great pick up for the Mocs. Go Dawgs!!! Go Mocs!!!

Good for him!! Maybe we can get Bill Goldburg in his place…he’s probably looking for work, and he could scare these kids into shape! BTW- he played for UGA in the early ’90s..(late ’80s?) as a DT.

I wish TB nothing but the best. We MUST have a strong SC staff and work ethic. I like the approach Alabama and LSU take and think we are a notch or more below that level.

Is this one of the Great Players Richt and Bobo get into the NFL? Yep UGa got more players in the NFL than Bama, but How many are still playing in the NFL?

Glad he is coaching and not just helping kids workout. Maybe he can come back to GA and coach a high school. He can send more recruits to UGa that go to the NFL for a cup of coffee.

@SI yeah Bama has 8 strength coaches currently however the new rule will lower that to 5 in August so next year it will be 5 full time strength coaches with 3 grey shirted coaching assistants.

Congrats to Thomas Brown on his new job. I am sure he will have a postive impact on the world in whatever he does, unlike most of the haters on here who have nothing better to do than take shots at others.

@ Smart enough – a cup of coffee is more of an NFL career than you and I will ever have. You do realize that if you are drafted in the first 6 rounds of the NFL that this means you are considered one of the top 200 players in the country for that draft? TB was a good player who would have had a better NFL career if not for suffering another career ending knee injury after having 2 similar injuries while @ UGA. Give up the hate brother!

Johnny DangerDwag a S&C coach to the RB coach? I think a small school wanted a BIG NAME to recruit GEORGIA. TB hasn’t been in the job long enough to have ANY thing on his resume. He has a Name in Georgia and played RB. That has give him a chance and get us some good recruits written all over it. No TEAM is after your HC or OC the big name guys.

Commings hasn’t been convicted of anything and the witnesses reported (obtained by the AJC from UGA under the Open Records Act) that he didn’t hit his girl friend. Get a life. If he had hit her in the mouth as she claimed, she would have been in the hospital. This is a division 1 football player.

As for TB, always a fan. Good luck in your new career as a coach and leader of young men. You have always led by example, and I hope you continue to do so. DGD.

TB was good at UGa and it is great to see him to get a chance to coach. He got it because what he did on the field and how he can recruit the state. It is a good move to the team and him. Much better than being a High School coach in Georgia.

What the AJC got only what has been filed up to this point. Not ALL the witness statements are in. You really think he would hit her full force with a balled fist?
Get a Life? You guys are all over any school that has an issue so don’t even try to assume any moral high ground.
This is the 2nd call between these 2.
The Student Disciplinary Board better be tougher than Richt. What does that say to more than HALF of the student population that is female?
