THE TEN AT 10

1. Looks like Willie Martinez is coming back to the SEC. The former Georgia defensive coordinator, so vilified his last couple of years in Athens, is joining new Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder as defensive backs coach for the Tigers. Nothing is official yet but there are multiple reports Martinez was in Auburn on Monday, including THIS ONE by Charles Goldberg of The Birmingham News. It will be the fifth time the two men have coached together, including hitches at Boca Raton (Fla.) High School, Central Michigan, Central Florida and Georgia.  Martinez, 48, resigned as defensive backs coach at Oklahoma in January. He was fired as Georgia’s defensive coordinator in December of 2009.

Of course, this means the Bulldogs’ last two D-coordinators will be conspiring against them in November (and on the recruiting trail well before then). That continues a long tradition of Georgia coaches ending up at Auburn and vice-versa. Last time we checked the conference-expansion gurus are still planning to continue the “Deep South’s Old Rivalry” at least one more year.

2. As expected, Georgia reported a secondary violation because of head football coach Mark Richt’s nationally-televised comments about Josh Harvey-Clemons on ESPNU on national signing day, according to documents obtained Monday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution via open records laws on Monday.

To recap, Harvey-Clemons announced on TV at 9:15 a.m. he was signing with Georgia and actually appeared to sign something. At 9:45 a.m., Richt answered questions about Harvey-Clemons’ addition an ESPN reporter in Athens, also on live television. According to UGA’s report, Richt realized at 11 a.m. that Georgia still had not received Harvey-Clemons’ signed letter-of-intent and immediately reported that to compliance. Athletic Director Greg McGarity’s letter of explanation to SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, dated the next day, noted that UGA finally received Harvey-Clemons’ faxed letter-of-intent at about 8 a.m. on Feb. 2 and that the time and date listed next to Harvey-Clemons’ signature was 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 1.

All of which means very little. Though Georgia admitted to a violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.10.2, McGarity asked Slive “for relief of prescribed penalties” due to the “de minimis” nature and “mitigating circumstances” of the violation. De minimis is latin for “so minor as to merit disregard,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

3. Meanwhile, I filed an update this past weekend on the on-going disciplinary troubles in Georgia’s secondary. I learned this past Friday that UGA’s Office of Student Conduct is reviewing the domestic violence/simple battery case against cornerback Sanders Commings to determine whether it is a violation of the school’s conduct code regarding “physical abuse” and if it needs to be dealt with on the university level. Interestingly, though, the interviews available so far from that investigation indicate the school’s inquiry may do more to help Commings’ legal case than hurt it. The arraignment for the Bulldogs’ senior start is scheduled for March 22.

As for dismissed defensive backs Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders, each of them has landed (or will land) at junior colleges. Marshall already is enrolled at Garden City Community College in Kansas and Sanders plans to enroll at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville in April. Both players are hoping Richt and team members will allow them to return next year, according to their respective head coaches. Wide receiver Sanford Seay, who was also dismissed for being involved in the same theft incident as the other two players, has not determined his next move, according to reports.

4. Georgia’s men’s basketball team has a chance to win three SEC games in a row for the first time since knocking off Ole Miss, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Arkansas in four consecutive days to win the 2008 SEC Tournament in Atlanta. The Bulldogs (12-12, 3-7 SEC) are coming off a stunning win over No. 18 Mississippi State in overtime in Starkville this past Saturday. They beat NCAA Tournament bubble team Arkansas in Athens this past Wednesday.

Now the Bulldogs visit South Carolina Wednesday night and it appears to be the most winnable game so far. The Gamecocks (9-15, 1-9 SEC) are currently last in the league. But coach Mark Fox isn’t expecting an easy go of it. “South Carolina has already played Kentucky twice, already played Florida twice, and then had Vandy and Alabama at home,” he noted. “So I think their schedule has been really hard. I think they’re like us, a group that’s continuing to get better and continues to play a little better each week. I’m sure we’ll see them at their best on Wednedsay night.”

5. Several Bulldog players are starting to assert themselves as we enter the last third of the regular season. Gerald Robinson Jr., who was named SEC Player of the Week, seems to have been willing the Bulldogs to victory the last couple of weeks. His offensive and defensive plays down the stretch were the difference against State. Also, freshman Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who hit the game-deciding 3-pointer in OT, is starting to display the all-around skills that made him a five-star rating. Also, Donte’ Williams and Nemanja Djurisic are creating some post offense and a still-hobbled Marcus Thornton has proven to be defensive and rebounding force.

6. Speaking of Georgia basketball, I ran into former Bulldogs Carlos Strong (1992-96) the other day refereeing youth basketball games in Oconee County. It was wonderful to see the 6-foot-8 forward in action at Herman C. Michael Park as he lent his talents to the 7- and 8-year-old kids there. He’d blow his whistle if they traveled or double-dribbled, take a second or two to show them how to do it correctly, then hand them back the ball.

A former McDonald’s All-American from Athens’ Cedar Shoals High, Strong played professionally in the NBA, CBA and Europe and hasn’t been out of professional basketball very long. Now he’s running the “Carlos Strong Skills & Drills Basketball Camp” through Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department. He also recently returned to classes at UGA where he is finishing up his degree in child and family development. Strong told me hopes to coach on a full-time basis in the near future.

7. In women’s hoops, Anne Marie Armstrong, a 6-foot-3 junior from Norcross, was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday based on her work in Sunday’s 76-63 win over Vanderbilt. The former Miss Georgia Basketball scored a career-high 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting and played all 40 minutes against the Commodores. Armstrong’s honor comes on the heels of teammate Krista Donald being named SEC Freshman of the Week the previous week.

8. Speaking of Donald, she didn’t play in the Vanderbilt game after having some major dental work done, meaning that the Lady Dogs were at less than full strength for a game yet again this season. Women’s basketball publicist Mike Mobley shared an amazing stat with me this week regarding the team’s struggle to stay healthy this season. Injuries, illnesses and the like have forced Lady Dogs to miss a combined 158 individual days of practice this season. That tally does not include losing 6-4 Marisela Rodriguez sitting out the season due to a pre-existing knee injury.

All told, coach Andy Landers said he has had what he expected to be a full complement of players for just four practices since November. The only Lady Bulldogs not to miss a workout due to a health condition are Jasmine Hassell, Khaalidah Miller, Tamika Willis and Danielle Bennett. “We’re calling those four our ‘birthday party ponies,’” Landers quipped. “They’re healthy as horses so we ride them hard for two hours every day.”

Here’s the good news: Georgia (19-6, 8-4 SEC) appears to be at full strength heading into this week’s critical games against South Carolina and Florida. The No. 21-ranked Lady Dogs are currently tied with South Carolina for third in the SEC.

9. Baseball starts on Friday with season opener against Presbyterian at Foley Field. It looks like it’s going to be a good year for the Diamond Dogs as coach David Perno brings back what might be the most experienced team of his tenure. Eight position players and eight pitchers are back from the team that reached the NCAA Regional Finals in Corvallis, Ore., last year. And they should have a strong starting rotation built around all-star right-hander Michael Palazzone, who was 10-5 with 3.14 ERA in 2011. But Georgia is already having to overcome some injury problems in the bullpen. Tyler Maloof, who had 18 saves in 19 opportunities this past season, has been shut down since early fall with a back muscle issue. Perno is not certain when Maloof can get back but best guesses are mid to late season.

10. THIS & THAT: Kudos to Seth Emerson of The Macon Telegraph for going the extra mile(s) and tracking down former Georgia basketball players Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins with the L.A. Clippers at Charlotte’s Time-Warner Cable Arena. For his trouble Emerson gained some nice insights into the lives of the two NBA rookies and their feelings about how the Bulldogs are doing without them. . . . Rusty Mansell of Dawgs247.com got in touch with former Georgia signee Chris Mayes, a defensive lineman out of Griffin’s Spalding High, and reports that Mayes will enroll at Georgia in January. Mayes also said he’s going to redshirt this coming season so he will have three years of eligibility remaining at UGA. . . .

The No. 4-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team plays host to Georgia Tech Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Center. The Bulldogs lost to the Yellow Jackets last year, breaking a 24-match winning streak. . . . The Georgia Gym Dogs moved up to No. 4 from No. 6 in the national rankings after knocking off No. 3 Arkansas this past Friday. Anybody else just noticing that the NCAA Gymnatics Championships are going to be held at Gwinnett Arena April 20-22? . . . The No. 10-ranked Georgia softball team is playing host to five teams in the 9th annual Georgia Softball Classic starting Friday. . . . Former Bulldogs Brian Harman, who’s now a pro, teamed up with an amateur to tie for first in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week. Harman finished 20th individually. . . . The current men’s golf team opens the spring season in the Puerto Rico Classic this weekend. . . . The No. 11-ranked women’s golf team was in the lead in Puerto Rico on Monay after All-American Marta Silva Zamora and teammate Emilie Burger each carded opening-round 66s. . . . The Georgia swimming and diving teams compete in the SEC Championships in Knoxville beginning Wednesday.

Getting Mayes in early is going to be a big boost for the defense for 2013 since UGA is going to lose alot of starters after this season. The “violation” in the JHC saga is so crazy that I can’t believe it is still being talked about. Everyone who was watching ESPNU that morning would have made the same assumption that Richt did. In my opinion it would only be a big deal if the young man was actually wavering or decided to go elsewhere.

I actually thought Martinez was a pretty good position coach @ UGA. UGA sent some pretty decent secondary guys to the NFL during his tenure. Make no mistake, both he and Van Gorder are going to be coaching out of their minds next year when the Dawgs roll into Auburn. I wouldn’t be expecting another 45-7 outcome for the Dawgs.

Sorry I haven’t posted much lately, fellas, but I did come across a Rivals.com article that I thought might be of interest to Dawgs fans:

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1331208

The University of Georgia football program is listed as one of the ten most under-performing college football programs in the country based on the high quality of its recruiting classes relative to the on-the-field results. Mark Richt recruited four top-10 recruiting classes over the five years 2006-2010, and produced only one end-of-the-season top-20 ranked team from 2007-2011.

Those of you Dawg bloggers who know me from me past AJC blog posts, know that I am not a partisan fan who posts merely to stir the pot and get a nasty reaction. I’m an Atlanta resident, and I regularly follow UGA and Tech sports teams (well, UGA mostly, because of the SEC and rivalry ties to Florida). I was originally a relatively strong advocate for Coach Richt because I thought he was a good guy who tried to do things the right way in running a Division I football program. I am increasingly convinced that regime change will be necessary before UGA competes at the highest levels of Division I-FBS football again.

The best sports news in Atlanta always comes from UGA.

Pro teams inconsistent, Tech teams non existent. Georgia Teams always ranked and have garnered 27 NCAA championships compared to Georgia Tech’s 1.

First decade as a coach, dont think anyone has everyone won a NC in that short a time. Even Satan ahd to pay his dues to get there. Most dont get a chance to start their career with a high powered SEC team like Richt did. Most start at small dinky schools and work their way up and by then have become accustomed to the joys and pains of coaching college football. He had to learn it the hard way in the SEC as opposed to a smaller school. He has this team poised for greatness for these upcomming years.

I see your point and the facts do support it. The facts also support richt coming in and winning an SEC title in 2002 and again in 2005

Despite the youth on the OL, I expect this to be Richt’s best team ever at UGA. The defense will be totally lights out.

My expectation is 12-0 or 11-1 and play LSU/Bama/Ark in the Dome.

Thanks for the endorsement of CMR Atlanta Gator. You think we need to change after finishing season ranked 9 of 11 years and averaging almost 10 wins a year. I remember the (Keep Ray Goff) chant that night in Sanford Stadium in 1995.

While it may be true Georgia was unranked twice, those seasons included us having to start a rookie QB twice. The impressive stat is that CMR has always won 10 games with a returning QB. He HAS managed to finish 2nd and 3rd in the final NCAA polls, and FSU has fallen off the NCAA map since he left there. I’m sure you as a UF fan would love to see him go. He may not have a winning record against you guys, but he has a winning record against all other SEC teams (maybe 1 down with LSU now). Recruits seem to feel he is able to get it done. Clemons had to fight his Gator grandad to come up here. Saturday night at the Landing was fun last year.

Anyway, I sure like our chances this year especially since Muschamp has never won in Jacksonville. Best to be concerned about your own inadequacies.

Everything I read from that departure indicated that he was actually quite respected on that staff, was responsible for several recruits (that were condidering NOT coming now that he was gone) and everybody knew he was just leaving because Stoops was making room for his brother. Martinez was considered a guy who had multiple opportunities, including a couple of DC jobs. So what does “horrible” and they finally figured that out come from?

Where Auburn will be strong is not the defense but the offensive line. They had two incredible OL recruiting classes back to back. Unfortunately UGA is still working on that. Martinez almost cost Richt his job but he is a good recruiter and, along with, Van Gorder, will try to cherry pick Georgia like Saban is doing. Georgia must win this year to protect their recruiting borders. Kirby Smart will be a head coach some where within two years. If Saban flees to Texas for more cash and easier recruiting. Smart will be Bummers next head coach.

Well, the one thing about Martinez, is under Van Gorder, he will improve as a defensive coach.

By the way, GTBob, I like it when people are bluntly honest. It just kind of eliminates the argument. Also, this is meant as a positive statement, not as a sarcastic one. I have always been a UGA fan first, and a Tech fan, second. Except in 1990 when Tech won the championship. Only time I have ever pulled against UGA. TDF – you are NOT above winning like that. Although you do a great job of covering your a$$ over there.
Rationale – I think our current DC is a better “winning coach” than our current “mentor coach”. We have no FEAR FACTOR at Athens. Winning teams make other teams wish they were playing somebody else. That is not the case in Athens.

Auburn really should not be a recruiting rival with UGA. The academics over there are woeful. Most anybody can get in there. If you can fog a mirror….then wipe it off, you are Auburn material……maybe even scholarship material. Last week I talked with a man whose son just graduated from Auburn with a double major……heating AND air conditioning. He said to me, “you know how to get an Auburn graduate off your front porch?…….Pay him for the pizza!”

At UGA, we should easily be able to sell to recruits…..particularly homegrown GA players……the merits of a superior education. And BTW, we don’t pay the “Scam Newtons” of the world $160k to like us.

War Eagle, baby.

Not sure what “lit up” means but if you look at things like statistical ranking, the categories that have to do with pass defense had Oklahoma in the top 20 last year, (top 10 or 15 in some) pretty similar to UGA, and better than a lot of SEC teams.

The exception being raw yardage, in which case, the Big12 is what it is. And in that conference, Oklahoma was one of the better pass defense teams.

TDF – Then don’t come on this blog and complain about losing. You have to have mean players to win in the SEC. 3 LSU players almost killed a man outside a bar and all three were on the roster come January. Thats what it takes and Richt is not willing to do that.

Good stuff as always, Chip. Coach Fox HAS to get Marcus Thornton more involved in the offense. Thornton CAN score. Marcus has to start looking for his shot, going to the basket. At times, he has displayed a decent spin move and a good short jumper. The guy averaged 26 a game in HS. He has offensive skills. He has to start going to the hoop. Good things will happen.

We have plenty of mean players that get nasty out on the field like its supposed to be. You dont have to kick a guy in the head at a bar while he is down to win games.

My “defense” of Willie is the same today as it was when he was DC at UGA, Joey. When folks say things that are FACTUALLY incorrect, I find that unnessesary. So I sometimes correct that. That’s all. Feel free to correct me if you think I am saying something incorrect, too. The truth is he did NOT have a horrible pass defense at Oklahoma, unless somebody thinks that the majority of the teams in the country, including quite a few in the top 25, were horrible, and should have “run off” thier DB coaches.

Suffice it to say that his tenue at UGA did not work out in the long run, for a variety of reasons. (to which I am on record as saying all along would be dealt with in logical and time appropriate manner, which it exactly was) But to call him horrible, or grossly overstate how bad it was when he was here, I’ve just never understood the need for that. The man is a good coach. Every situation is not always right for everyone. I guess Van Gorder is a fool for recommending him for the UGA job, and a fool for hiring him now?

Well said DawginLex! LOL.

I think there were numerous problems with the defense during Willie’s tenure. So of it was scheme, which can be attributed to him. Some of it was a dip in talent as compared to the early 2000’s when the Dawgs had Seymour, Pollack, Baily, Thomas Davis etc. Some of it was the warring factions on the defensive coaching staff between Martinez, Janek, and Fabris. And some of it was Richt becoming complacent and not reining his coaching staff in like he should have( hey let’s just call it like it is). And then on top of all that, you had the defensive players quitting on Willie, which became apparent as the 2009 season went on.

So it was a series of bad decisions, that led to a bad culture at UGA. It looks like things are starting to straighten out at UGA now, although the championship mentality is still lacking with this current group of players as compared to Richt’s earlier teams. Time will tell if Richt is on the right track or if last season was merely an aberration.

As for Auburn, I don’t think the combination of Van Gorder and Martinez can be any worse than Ted Roof, who was never a great DC, even during his tenure at Tech. I’m also of the opinion that the focus on defense, both in college and Pro, is not what it used to be. It seems like it is more about the offense scoring the opposition.Only Bama and LSU are the exceptions to that rule, and they play mind-numbling coservative offense, allowing their defense to generate turnovers and putting them in good position to score. I mean I guess winning a championship, whether you do it with offense or defense, is the most important thing. But it sure would be nice to have teams that were equally potent on defense and offense like how you used to have in the 90’s with FSU, Miami, Nebraska etc.

Willie Martinez was a horrible DC – gosh just go back and see how our points per game exploded under him. Not to mention we never got sacks, ints, or stopped ANYBODY when we needed to. Remember the opponents throwing to a receiver that seemingly had no DBs within 20 yards?

What I remember best is in Van Gorder’s time at UGA, he had 1 opponent score 30+ points on his D. When I quit counting, Willie’s 30+ games at over a dozen, with bout half dozen 40+ games.

And if it’s “exaggerating” to say “exploded,” I would submit that “he didn’t work out as DC here” is a vast understatement.

The NCAA; who can figure them out? Two weeks ago Nebraska was fined $38,000 and placed on 2 years’ probation for a major violation. Student-athlete scholarships allow schools to pay for required books for a class, but not other books recommended by the professor. Buying those extra books was the major violation. The NCAA held a press conference about it.

The gauntlet has been thrown down. If in the next 2 years Nebraska should inadvertently pocket-dial a prospective recruit, do they get the death penalty?

Call it what you want, but the coaches that inherit good players did nothing to get those guys to commit to them. Yes they coached them but what would have happened had the previous coach not gotten them on campus?

I give credit to Donovan for every game we won with his players on the team. The further removed the less credit deserved (Less of their players still on the team).

they dont have to wait 4 years to start getting credit they get some from day 1 bc they are the coach but you cant put them on a pedestal for winning a championship with another coaches players. LC is a prime example. He didnt recruit any of those players and was lucky to have inherited a great team. Had he not he never would have won the title in year 1.

The one thing in common with your list of coaches is that every one of them won the NC within their first 3 years. hmmmm………..

If these coaches inherited a bad team then do you think they would have won so quickly?? Bob Stoops might be the exception here as the team before him wasnt very good.

Perfect example right there. 2008 UF game. UF comes in to that game (opne of the best teams I had seen in years) scoring in the high 40s blowing out their last 3 opponents. Defense holds them to very low score in the first half, using 2 healthy LBs and third string DLs incidentally. Meanwhile the offense walks away from 17 points. Then a pick 6, a fumble nearly run back, to start the 3rd quarter blows open the game, and its forever willie fault.

I’d bet the farm IF that scenerio played out today the talk would be that Grantham did all he could and that dumb o’l Bobo was totally to blame.

It can be a stretch in some cases…but anyone can claim abuse..and they will get benefit of doubt, regardless of gender. however, men typically arent going to call police in those situations…just women…and many will play the system to their advantage. its a proven fact.

for example, i had a guy friend who was arguing with his girlfriend…she was throwing items at him in the driveway…the neighbors called the police on them, and HE had to turn himself into the police cause a warrant was placed, eventhough his girlfriend wasnt the one who called the police, nor did he even touch her. even had a restraining order placed by the state, and he didnt do a damn thing wrong. i watched the whole thing go down. And I didn’t mean that women get the benefit of the doubt, just that being arrested for “assault” is not the same as being guilty. The initial report indicated that the police officer who filled the report out stated he saw no marks on her , the whole thing is murky and we just need to let the investigation play its self out.

My point Joey was that scoring in the entire conference was up. So it was also exploding on a lot of other SEC defensive co-ordinators. BVG would have also had more over 30 games had he been here 5 more years too. Personally I thought his defense started backing up in late 03, and in 04, and I have no doubt have he been here another couple of years he would not have taken some hits.

We also won about half those games that we gave up 30, fwiw. I guess the point being that scoring was on the rise, with us as well.

Scoring rose from 16 to 25 ppg under WM. I think it was twice that increase on average in the SEC those years.

Only 3 team in the SEC did NOT average more than 25 ppg last year. Half average over 30. They’re all playing somebodies DCs.

His problem was his recruiting anyway. Not coaching. I frankly thought that had become pretty well acccepted at this point.

AD, you sometimes convince me of my wrongheaded thinking, but there ain’t a snowball’s chance in Hades that it will happen re Willie. If he had respect as a DC, surely one of what, 200+ college football teams in the NCAA would have hired him, but he is still an assistant?

Willie was a horrible DC who had coaching problems, not recruiting problems.

You would be hard pressed to say former Tech head coaches found much success after leaving the hood of North Ave.

Three of the last five GT head coaches left on their own to pursue better opportunities either in the NFL or at major football schools. Of the two coaches that were fired, one worked as an assistant for years after that and the other is currently an NFL head coach. So no, i’m not hard pressed to say that GT coaches still experience success after leaving Tech. At least it’s better work then starting a ponzi scheme like former UGA coaches do.

The board of regents of the University System of Georgia issued a report in April 1986 implicating Dr. Fred C. If Bobo (and Richt) doesn’t inject some spread (running and throwing) into his offense, with all of the speed he has available, he (and Richt) are committing malpractice.

Carlton Thomas never outran anybody on the edge. I never saw it work once. He got slung to the ground by a LB who simply ran him down, every time. He did however have a much better ypc ave. running between tackles than any of the so called “big” backs. Neither one was a very good option. (unless the line blocks like the AU game, in which case even our smallest backs had good yardage up the middle)

How about we just don’t see Carlton Thomas running the ball whenKeith Marshall is available ?

Richt and Bobo don’t have enough sack to fill this coaches jock….Suzanne Yoculan

Paul Finebaum: It always seems like Sarah Patterson comes off as the goodie two shoes and you’re the evil one. In wrestling terms you’re the masked woman, and she’s Shirley Temple.

Suzanne: The media started some of it. I’m definitely more spontaneous than Sarah. Even in press conferences, she’s more calculated, protective and careful, and I’m more spontaneous.

Sometimes I’ll stick my foot in my mouth, but I say what I feel. If I think my team is unbeatable or whatever, I’ll usually say so. There have been some times where we’ve beaten them and she has said things about equipment, the bars, or judging or whatever.

Whatever, winners make adjustments. So we go back and forth alot, and I probably fuel the fire more with my comments. She’s able to keep her Shirley Temple persona, but if you listen to who says what a lot of it starts in Alabama.

I don’t mind being the Darth Vader team of the SEC. In fact, 10 years ago we made the decision to just embrace that Darth Vader image, and we wear black everywhere we go on the road. We’re an aggressive, confident team. That’s our style. That’s my style. I like enthusiasm. I like excitement. We’ve won a lot of championships because of that.

I don’t believe in failure. I’d rather go out on a limb now and have it break once and a while than to never go out there. That’s just my approach. It’s offensive to some people, but it wins for Georgia. So I recruit athletes who can embrace going for it.

We’re like Steve Spurrier vs. Georgia. No one in Georgia likes Spurrier because he beats us a lot. (PWD: Inferring that no one in Bama likes them b/c they never beat Georgia anymore).

Sarah is more of a southern lady than I am. She does and says the right thing, and has better manners than I do. But that’s not my style. I say what I think.

I respect her. She’s had the same challenges at Bama that I have had at UGA.

I don’t use nouns when I can use verbs. I don’t call my team “underachievers.” I say that they are “underachieving.” I don’t call Sarah Patterson a “loser,” I said “don’t gripe about losing.” I don’t hate anything but cauliflower and turnips.

I have never had a girl transfer away from Georgia in my entire career. What other coach in any sport at any school can say that

Whatever, AD. My hope is that we don’t keep running a smallish back, like Marshall, out of the Power I, instead, maybe getting him the ball in space.

But, hell, how about we just keep disagreeing with every minute word of the other? Let’s keep it going.

Wow. A Nick Saban in heels . . .

You’re a pain in the butt, SMART, but you are right on the money with Yoculan. Richt is more concerned with loving his players and the needy overseas, just being a good man. That certainly isn’t a bad thing, but he just doesn’t have the Lombardi, “winning is everything” belief or attitude.

Yoculan was in Lombardi’s mold.

TDF, his HS coach said he was about 185. IC was what, 210 last year? I know he is fast, and he may be tough, but running between the tackles with our O-line blocking may be a reach.

Gurley’s coach said he would be 225 by the end of the summer. He may be hard to keep off the field.

This afternoon the University of Oklahoma finally acknowledged what everyone else in the country already knew. Mike Stoops is coming back.

As part of the announcement, they stated that “defensive backs coach Willie Martinez has resigned to pursue another position” which I’m sure will serve as the necessary technicality to keep Bob’s ‘never having fired a coach’ streak intact.

I personally like Mark Richt. I’ve met him 4 or 5 times. I think last year was a big improvement over the year before. I think with the starters returning and the schedule, next year looks like 10,11, hell maybe a clean sweep. I think the D is that good and the offense, with a third year Murray and the other weapons will be good enough………………But, I have not seen Georgia beat a really good football team in 3 years………2013 brings an unreal offense and a totally retooled who knows what defense. I still think we’ve seen the best this staff can bring us. Respectability, not championships.

Look at the raw talent that Van Gorder was given when he walked into UGA. He had several All-Americans on the team that he didnt do anything with but play the guys. He rode a very good recruitng wave at UGA and left when he knew the D was starting to fade. Enter Willie that didnt have a chance with such poor talent. Come on, who whould have recruited Trey Battle and Kelin Johnson as safties for D1 football. We lost some major D recruits and Van Gorder bailed knowing it. He will have the same problem at AU in the first couple of years. The bigger problem will be him recruitng agaisnt us with the pitch of “I have NFL DC Experience and can get you into the NFL in 3 years”…..UGA better win the SEC Champ this year to pull the needed big boys (Foster, Nkemdiche, etc) to UGA so we can reload…..Otherwise AU will be in the mix with Bama for these boys. Go Dawgs!

Joey

February 14th, 2012
6:09 pm

BILLY JACK, you think Van Gorder didn’t learn anything going against Richt’s offense back in the day? Not much difference today.

Murray may throw 3 Ints . . .

And, Van Gorder, as DC, just help resurrect a pathetic Falcons team from the dregs of the NFL, to 4 straight winning seasons, with a division title. The fact that Atlanta didn’t advance had more to do with a ultra-conservative offense, as well as playing the Super Bowl NL rep, (once) or Super Bowl winner (twice) in the three playoff appearances.

That’s how he keeps getting hired.

Auburn is such a joke of a program. If it weren’t for the state of Ga. the program wouldn’t even exist. Take away the players from the State of Ga, and now 2 former D.C’s at UGA, and the Auburn program is pitiful. Forgot to mention that the only way Auburn won at all under this clown of a head coach was with a professional player that got kicked out of Fl. but he was from Ga. also. Auburn was nothing without their professional Q.B. last year, and now that they have lost their O.C. they will be nothing this year either. VanGorder won with superior talent on defense when he was at UGA, Pollack, Thomas Davis, Sean Jones, Greg Blue, Witherspoon, and the list goes on and on. That will not be the case at Auburn. Auburn has one legit star on it’s defense, the D.E. from the state of FL. After that it is a bunch of 4 star busts, and several 3 star average players. There is no all-americans, and there aren’t any on the roster. Good luck to this sinking ship, that can only survive by living off of the state of Ga. Unfortunately, UGA and Bama get the best talent in the state of Ga, and that talent will continue to destroy the paper TIGERS. UGA owns Auburn, how does 5 out of 6 sound, Auburn can brag about beating Bama lately, but not UGA. Want happen as long as Cheezestick and his little pimp Taylor are on the plains.

Joey- If Van Gorder is that good then why didnt he excel at Georgia Southern as the HC? Or why didnt he excel at Jacksonville at the LB Coach? If you look, Van Gorder was sucessful at UGA and the Falcons when he had talent on the team. When he doesnt have any talent then he isnt a miracle worker like you are making him into. AU is having some serious issues on D right now and I dont see him turnig it around with the current players. Give him two years of recruiting and then he could have the needed talent to again show a strong D. Dont hatch his chickens before he can even lay the eggs!

Joey

JB, I get kinda excited when a poster as honest as yourself writes this, but I’ll believe a “clean sweep” when I see it. Richt has not done that at UGA, mainly because he always, always loses a game or two he shouldn’t.

His offense gets SHUT DOWN when he plays SEC teams with good DCs. In other words, Richt rarely outcoaches other talented teams’ coaches. We may make it through the East, but Chavis, and Saban/Smart will shut down this conservative, predictable offense in Atlanta.

I hope I’m wrong and you’re right.

Willie Martinez got a bad rap for the dawgs downfall and became the ‘Fall Guy’ for Mr Richt. The offense is and has always been the dawgs achilles heel. It’s true that WM’s defense gave up big plays at times but the offense didn’t make enough big plays(and still don’t) to give the defense a break. Here’s an example:

In the 1st quarter against WV in the sugar bowl the defense couldn’t get a break because the offense couldn’t stay on the field but once the offense got going in the 2nd quarter the defense settle down, made the adjustments and slowed down WV high power offense. Don’t forget that WM was dc when they won the sec in 2005.

Thomas Brown has left the Joe Tereshinski II Strength and Conditioning Program, as well. This leaves no one on JT2’s staff, at all. No one. Given the struggles late in games this past 2011 season, after all the DISNEYdawgs.com of this blog bragged to me how great we would be with JT2’s promotion to head of S&C, and now all the coaches on his staff have quit or left -

Just what in the world is going on with JT2’s S&C, at this critical juncture in the season, and when oh when are we going to get this

“coaching staff”

of Mark Richt’s, squared away :

(1) Mark Richt 15 February, still no EXTENSION by Greg McGarity, tennis player, and not a good one at that.
(2) Todd Grantham, still no EXTENSION
(3) Mike Bobo, still hanging around blaming with Mark Richt the execution they have not taught their offensive players, especially notably not taught their Quarterbacks in years and years and years and years and years.
(4) Running Backs’ coach Bryan McClendon, who was a wide receiver here, instead of Thomas Brown. Bryan has recruited top running backs, but he has failed miserably at teaching them execution too, hasn’t he ?
(5) Wide Receivers’ coach who in fact was a great running back in college as well.
(6) TE coach who in fact was a QB
(7) S&C Coach who has been here for 35 years and has grown stale promoted by Mark Richt to head of S&C, and since nothing has transpired to give any indication (other than EXCUSES by DISNEYdawgs.com) that there is any confidence whatsoever among the players or his coaching staff – all of whom have now retired or left him. Recall of course too, that there have been significant players who have been quite vocal about JT2, even listing him as the reason they left this program.

“We’re doing fine.”

P.S. Where are we with our ANNUAL STRUGGLE under Mark Richt all 12 years now, on the OL for 2012 – knowing as we did for the last Five (5) Years that we would lose Four (4) Senior Starters on the OL after 2011, including 3 in the NFL combines at this time.

PPS : What is happening with our Secondary all you DISNEYdawgs.com told me was so great for 2012, and that we did not need even you bragged to me what you called a 3-Star Secondary Signee ?

You’re sickening – the lot of you DISNEYdawgs.com with all this going on to admit NONE of it.

As much as I hated martinez as defensive coordinator, when vangorder was there and martinez was only the DB’s coach, he did a really good job, he produced a lot of very good db’s when he was only the db coach. I think van gorder was really at a bad situation with the falcons, mike smith is a DC and I believe he had to have a big hand in how the defense was ran and van gorder wasn’t given full control. I remember what he did at UGA when he had full control of the defense and honestly I’m not looking forward to facing auburn.

The difference in football at Bama vs UGA results wise is the commitment in Alabama from the Governor,to the Board of Regents,to the Athletic Board to the AD to win Championships. Those same folks in Georgia who were slapping Richt’s Back at the spring meetings after the 6-7 season and the loss to UCF is all I needed to see. The commitment at UGA is to field a respectable team.

Even if the state of Georgia didn’t have College Football, we have more things to look forward to than Alabamian’s, can you imagine what it would be like for them without College Football, that is, that states life blood, they have nothing else, its sad, but its true, that’s the reason they will do anything to keep a Top Ranked College Football Team, without it, the State of Alabama is nothing but a blotch on the map.

You morons can’t see it is apples to apples?

Richt gets way better than AVERAGE SEC talent. As we have been told he has one of the top3 or 4 SEC recruiting classes for the last 11 years. RICHT is 34-19 in the SEC with Better TALENT

Johnson gets the 6-7th best ACC recruiting Classes the past 4 years. JOHNSON is 34-19 in the ACC with LESS talent.

How STUPID do you have to be not to see it is the same when you compare equal to the competition.
A VW can be as good in racing as a Ferrari but they race in different classes. They are both compared against the competition and considered to be equally as good. Can the VW beat the Ferrari? Maybe 1 in 10 but it don’t mean the drivers are not equally as good.
Like they say…Give Johnson Richt’s talent and he will beat Richt 9 of 10 times.

I am not comparing the ACC to the SEC
I am comparing SEC talent and SEC coaching against SEC talent and SEC coaching to ACC talent & coaching against ACC talent & Coaching. The CORRELATION is Richt does LESS with More and therefore isn’t some great coach. Johnson does MORE with Less and therefore is as good as or better coach than Richt.

TDF aka TBSF point spreads are determined by Vegas to get people to place money on each of the teams. Point spreads don’t make an UNDERDAWG. A team that is perceived to be at a disadvantage is GIVEN points to get people to place a wager on them. If during the week the team receiving points gets too much money the points shift to get more money on the other team. The Fans create the mindset of the underdawg not Vegas. chucky that is apples and oranges. Show where TECH players were taking classes there. You can’t. The 17 students were not making progress towards graduation because the person in charge of compliance was not keeping up withe the rule changes. He has been fired. He was calculation progress by the old standard, He had failed to attend the NCAA new rules comity seminars.

Im sure you proudly claim Colorado’s actual championship from 1990 under coach Ross, correct? Do you have a problem with him only suspending his 3 players that put a 110 pound girl in the hospital back in 1989 when they beat the crap out of her at an off campus pizza pub??? Of course you dont.

The SACS report cites the College for poor record keeping and misspending of federal financial aid as some of the institution’s violations.
The financial impact due to accreditation loss is severe. Morris Brown will immediately lose access to millions of dollars in federal financial assistance, which approximately 90 percent of its students receive.

Where do you get Tech Players are taking classes at CAU or Morris Brown? Flapping your gums doesn’t make it true.

chucky…Yes I claim the 1990 when Tech was 11-0-1 Colorado was 11-1-1 and should have been 10-2-1 without the 5th down win.

No I was very mad. I don’t expect players to act that way, but I couldn’t make the coach do anything. I didn’t defend his handling of the incident.

Colorado played 4 conference CHAMPIONS that year. The cheats played NONE. Tech beat Colorado’s leftovers in a crap bowl who was even playing without their starting qb. No contest, Colorado was the real champ.

“No I was very mad. I don’t expect players to act that way, but I couldn’t make the coach do anything. I didn’t defend his handling of the incident.”

Then you don’t really have a foot to stand on whining about Commings, who did not injury anyone as no witnesses came forward to state otherwise, and who police physically witnessed the victim within minutes of the alleged incident and did not see any signs of struggle or abuse. So stop trolling and enjoy your crow.

Bingo farms. Everything you said is correct. Tech played absolutely nobody that year, a pure crapfest ACC schedule while Colorado took to the road and played the best. Which is why Colorado had the most publications voting them #1. And the fact GT played an already exposed Nebraska that Colorado destroyed without even their starting qb is just laughable.

Farms…Tech didn’t play Colorado you stupid fool.

The FACT that Colorado won a game with 5 downs and should have been 10-2-1 means the Buffs never should have been considered in the National Championship discussion.
You DWAG fans cried this year about BAMA playing in the BCS CG but they didn’t win the West or the SEC is the same argument right. TECH did it ON THE FIELD. Bama and Colorado didn’t Do cry about Colorado winning and in the same cry about Bama getting a shot. the is the definition of Hypocrite.

TBSF….Knows Commings NEVER hit her. TBSF was there so he KNOWS everything that happened. Hopefully the Student Disciplinary Comity will kick him out of school because this is the 2nd instance of physical altercation with this young lady. This is not a Football issue this is a public safety issue. Like you dwag love to say It is not safe at Tech but at Uga you don’t have to fear the criminals in the city you have to fear the criminal students.

You are so stupid I do not even know where to begin. Where did farms say anything about Tech playing Colorado at? I wish they had played. Colorado would have destroyed them. 5th down? You morons are credited with 2 wins against UGA due to equally bad officiating during the same decade and Im sure you proudly claim them.

Everything I stated is fact which you cannot dispute. Choke on it troll. You lose.

Love seeing actual factual information regarding Tech’s theft of Colorado’s title. Very few people are aware that Colorado had already destroyed a healthy Nebraska team in Lincoln in early November of that year. People also never mention that Nebraska was without their starting QB for their bowl game against the cheats.

People also never mention that their tie came against the SEC champion the first game of the year in Anaheim and their one point loss was on the road against the Big 10 co-champ 3rd game of the year.

Tech played a disgraceful scdedule and tied a horrible UNC team in the middle of the year that was not even bowl eligble.

No contest who the real 1990 champion is.

An UGA didn’t play anybody in 1980. If tech doesn’t do UGa a favor by making Notre Dame TIE Tech UGA wouldn’t be champions in 80.

Nebraska still wouldn’t have won with their QB. TECH put 45 on Nebraska’s D. That was where the game was won not stopping Nebraska’s O.
Florida Citrus Bowl: Georgia Tech 45, Nebraska 21
Orange Bowl: Colorado 10, Notre Dame 9

UGa’s biggest problem is Richt and Bobo don’t have enough sack to fill Yonculan’s jock strap.

Suzanne Yoculan interview:
I don’t mind being the Darth Vader team of the SEC. In fact, 10 years ago we made the decision to just embrace that Darth Vader image, and we wear black everywhere we go on the road. We’re an aggressive, confident team. That’s our style. That’s my style. I like enthusiasm. I like excitement. We’ve won a lot of championships because of that.

We’re like Steve Spurrier vs. Georgia. No one in Georgia likes Spurrier because he beats us a lot. (PWD: Inferring that no one in Bama likes them b/c they never beat Georgia anymore).

I have never had a girl transfer away from Georgia in my entire career. What other coach in any sport at any school can say that?

Just to add to Atlanta Gator’s post. Of the other 9 schools who have underachieved, 8 of them have fired their coach. UGA is about to give their coach a raise and an extension. Try to figure that one out.

Really? GT fans talking crap after getting man handled last year and finally starting to realize that PJ is no the savior you made him out to be? If GT wins 6 games next year you should be happy, because its downhill from here on out jacket fans…..

And good luck auburn fans, dont forget that willies D-backs were always missing assignments.

CTG has given UGA a new look D and it appears only in his THIRD SEASON, upcoming, that UGA will be able to play some big boy D. On the other side, Bobo is always befuddled and blows the game vs solid top 15-18 teams. He was here and still has not ramped UP UGA’s W/L ratio ……………DUE to his O. No way. D won games for us when we won, not the O, except vs NM St U and that was practice only.

We blew the Outback Bowl badly and it still stinks. I am not a QB Murray fan any more. He has yet to prove that he really can lead a TOP CALIBER team vs other very TOP CALIBER teams. So far, for my money, Aaron Murray is a bust. Nice stats but so what??

Willie M to Auburn????…well that should sink them for a few years as he has got to be the worse college asst coach in the country. BVG did a good job I thought but his effectiveness tending to wear off and be less each year. So hey….Go Auburn and perhaps you can pick up Bobo and have a full compliment of cast offs!????

Just think about how Auburn will beat us when VanGorder and Martinez together it is combinations,,it was good defense for uga when they were here….We just have to look out ..they will burn us alive unless …Todd Grantham Defense come out on top yeah? Van Gorder’s defense is 4-3 and average for Atlanta Falcons and we are 3-4 seem to work so far.

Van Gorder was going to get flushed from the “facuns”. Willie was going to experience the same sort of “rush/flush” at soonerville (but he resigned first. maybe it was a forced resig’). But hey, who cares they’ll be good for “awhbun”. damn clowns, all of ‘em…..
