Bulldogs pull out impressive 70-68 overtime win over No. 20 Miss. State

Pretty impressive win by Georgia on Saturday. The Bulldogs went to Starkville and took down No. 20 Mississippi State. The Maroon Dogs are, in my opinion, one of the best-built teams in the SEC south of Kentucky. So I certainly wasn’t expecting Georgia’s first SEC road win to come there.

In case you missed the telecast, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit a late 3-pointer in overtime and finished with 20 points to lead the Bulldogs to the 70-68 victory. Gerald Robinson’s bucket sent the game into the extra period.

Following was the AP burst. Wanted to give folks a chance to comment. . . .

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 20 points, including a crucial 3-pointer late in overtime, and Georgia beat No. 20 Mississippi State 70-68 on Saturday.

Georgia (12-12, 3-7) earned its first Southeastern Conference road win this season and only its second road victory overall. Gerald Robinson Jr. added 13 points, including eight in overtime. Dustin Ware had 11.

Mississippi State (19-6, 6-4) was led by Dee Bost’s 21 points. The senior guard missed a jumper at the buzzer that could have tied it.

Georgia trailed for much of the game, but Robinson hit a driving layup with 27 seconds remaining that sent the game to overtime. Georgia won at Humphrey Coliseum for the first time since 2002.

Great win. Best I have seen our front line, particularly Dontae Williams play all year. Gerald had a tough game but kept plugging and basically took over at the end. KCP had a really nice game with dominant 1st half and big 3 in OT. Go Dawgs GATA!!

I’m impressed with how this team has gotten a lot better lately, starting with Arkansas. Our front line is undersized but D Williams and Thornton are playing hard and giving a significant boost to our offense.

Fox has done a great job bringing this young team around. We’re not UK in BB (and not in FB either, thank goodness) so we don’t have 5 stars sitting on the bench. We still need some recruits for next yr and develop our young players that we have this yr to have a realistic chance at the NCAA tourney in 2013.

UGA’s offense has been so poor this year, it’s nice to see two straight gams (minus the first 10 minutes today) where UGA was able to actually do some damage with the rock. They still really need to pull in a big recruit or two for next year if they want to be a tourney team, but at least the young guys are forming a decent nucleus. Pope will certainly be a big time threat by next year.

This time last week I was worried about UGA and job done by the coaching staff this year. Not the wins and losses but the seemingly lack of progress during the season. Before the season began, i thought we could be measured by our performance against Auburn, Ole Miss, UT, USC and tech. These are all average to below average teams that UGA should be able to beat. Unfortunately,UGA and only beaten UT (hadn’t played USC yet). Worse than losing to these teams seemed to be the lack of improvement. For example, when UGA beat Notre Dame early in the season, this was truly two bad teams playing each other. Since then, UGA has improved marginally while ND has turned into a pretty good ball team.

As I said, this is how I felt this time last week. Now…..two wins against two teams that I did not think we could beat – two wins in one week don’t make a season but it does make me feel better about the direction of this team.

Mark Fox is a good coach with a good staff. Unfortunately, if he is successful, the bigger programs looking for a coach will take him just as Tubby Smith left for UK. I don’t think UGA will ever be a nationally competitive basketball school (not sure if I believe football team can reach a level or year in and year out national competitiveness either) but, if Mark Fox stays for a while, I think he will make the program a frequent tourney visitor and maybe once in a while a team than can advance to the Sweet Sixteen .

Bright Idea

February 12th, 2012
1:41 pm

I’m glad the kids get to enjoy some wins. Fox is a good coach who we must keep to provide stability to the program. It may take 5-6 more years for recruits to take Georgia seriously. This team is not very good but they still play hard despite their lack of athleticism.

February 12th, 2012

Fair and B-oneheaded,
we are not at this point in time evaluating “after 3 seasons”…
we are entering the tournament time of the end of the third season. Fox has a sophomore class and a freshman class recruited so far. We’re in a hole but we’ve got some shovels recruited to dig us out. With our transfer recruits and the recruits Fox has signed we’re moving in the right direction. We’re sort of like Vandy is in football. We’re not much of a basketball school right now and haven’t been. We’re behind Kentucky, Bama, Florida and Arkansas & others….that’s the fact.
And Fox is getting paid to turn it around and get us taken seriously. NO small job.
We were in the dance last year and we are starting to find a way to be dangerous late in this season. It’s a tournament sport. We could play our way into the ncaa or nit .
I’ve got little patience for skeptics who don’t know jack. We’re more relevant now than anytime since 1983 and 1984 when Coach Durham’s teams peaked. Let’s be honest. Fair n B, your comments are UNbalanced. Where did you think we would be after 2.5 seasons considering how far behind the rest of the pack we were? Did you think we’d unseat Kentucky and a century of tradition after 2.5 years and a new paint job on the old gym? Yes, we need to recruit Atlanta and Fox is doing that….(KCP)…but there’s more to Ga than Atlanta and 4 and 5 star recruits want to go where the game is taken seriously for more than 2.5 years.

Miss.St overlooks UGA after beating it’s arch-rival Miss. and all of a sudden Fox is a great coach again. Give me a fu—ing break. Fox has proven he can’t coach time and time again. Especially last year when he had 2 of the top 10 players in the SEC, and he was lucky to finish above .500 in the SEC. His mind farts during games against Tenn, Florida, and Vandy in athens last year, and his mindless timeout against Bama in SEC tourny last year proves this guy has no clue what he is doing during crunch time in big games. Couple that with the fact he can’t recruit in state, and you will continue to have 4 wins per year in the SEC. Totally pathetic, and UGA fans think this guy is the answer. My GOD, wakeup people, basketball is one sport that a decent coach can turn around a program in a few years. But this guy isn’t close. He won with Felton’s recruits last year, and now in his 3rd year, he has all of his recruits, and you can see the results. The guy is a joke when it comes to recruiting, and there are no players coming in next year that will be difference makers. Unfortunately for UGA fans, Bama once again got the best coach that was available, that being Grant, and Panty chaser Evans got the no-name coach, that will remain a no-name. Grant is a much better recruiter, and he has already gotten more top recruits from Atlanta than Fox will ever get. Damn, doesn’t that sound familiar? A Bama coach raping the state of Ga. for big time players. When will this mediocrity at UGA ever end in Football and basketball? Why does UGA have to settle for mediocre coaches in Richt and Fox, and sit and watch Bama’s coaches cherry pick the state’s top talent. McGarity is a joke, and so is Adams,Richt and Fox. UGA fans deserve better, but unfortunately it will never happen as long as Adams is at the top.

this dawg want hunt, you are being somewhat unfair about Fox. He did better with Felton’s recruits than what Felton was able to do with them and he has a better record than Felton and the other two coaches before him. I’m not saying that Fox was the right man for the job but he’s not a terrible hc. Personally, I would of hired Bobby Knight or Brad Stevens but I’m not the AD.

As for the football team goes, I wish Chris Petersen was the hc because I don’t think Mr Richt care enough to win championships @uga.

In spite of our veterans in the backcourt, this is a very young team. Young teams are usually quite inconsistent. The contrast in the Auburn and Miss State games couldn’t bear that out more clearly.

Mark Fox is a great coach working with fair talent and minimal fan support. Until those facts change, the results won’t be what we’d ultimately like. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the “ups” and endure the “downs” which dot a 30-game season. Go Dawgs!

Richt has taken UGA to the SEC championship 4 times in the last 10-11 years. The ONLY other team to make it that many times was…..LSU. Both 4 times. Rucht has done more for UGA since Herschel was there than all the coaches combined. Has Herschel not showed up, Dooley would have been fired and you can take away a national championship and 3 sec championships Dooley won. Richt should be considered a blessing. No coach wins a national championship in their first 10 years of beign a head coach and during Richts first 10 his record is amongst the best in college football history. He is NOW getting into his prime, when the greats FIRST won their a NC. The next 5 years for UGA will be AWESOME. How many SEC championships games do you see UGA going to the next 5 years? 5? Richt has the team in posiiton to do just that. Win one of them and you know UGA will be playing for the NC. Win 2 of them, thats 2 shots and so on. Richt has UGA in position to win it all and some ignorant blind people wish Richt was not coach? Do you remember the 20 years before Richt. Pretty sad except for Herschel’s last couple. One year an upset of Texas in the Cotton Bowl in 84′. Other than that there was no major bowls. No sec titles or EVEN championship games! Richt has taken UGA to 4 and won it twice and the other year had us in line for the NC but BCS took LSU instead when UGA was the BEST team in the country but had an early loss. So the BCS throws UGA a bone after they THRASHED Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, by ranking a much weaker UGA team #1 in the preseason poll. That really made Richt look bad because expectations were so high and the team was not NEARLY as good as the year before as a whole. That actually started the decline of UGA as they had to significantly REBUILD with Cox at QB and then Murray as a freshman and Green being suspended and OL being decimated with injuries. etc.

Richt HELD the DAWGS together THROUGH ALL OF THAT and HAS UGA IN POSITION QUICK! TO WIN IT ALL. ARE YOU BLIND? THEN NOW YOU SEE!

tony

Some fans can be so hostile. I think Mr Richt is a better coach than what he want everybody to believe. He could have won 5 championships if he cared about uga the way he cared about FSU.

The reason why FSU had the #1 offense in the nation in 2000 is because Mr Richt cared about FSU. In his tenure @FSU his offense was always rank the top10. Since his tenure(2001-11) @uga his offense has yet to crack the top 20 in the ranking.

Here’s where Mr Richt’s Total Offense rank @uga:

2001 rank 21st
2002 rank 49th
2003 rank 58th
2004 rank 31st
2005 rank 49th
2006 rank 90th
2007 rank 74th
2008 rank 22nd
2009 rank 75th
2010 rank 56th
2011 rank 39th

A coach who is use to having a top 10 offense every year would be devastated or ashame to be rank that low every year. This might be farfetched but whenever the fans gets irritated with the team, the ranking seems to get worse. http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/090602/col_10375439.html He makes me think he sabotage the games just to upset the fans. He lose to opponents(Vandy/Ky) who we should beat every season and it seems like he call the wrongs plays just to give certain teams the victory.

Every year there have been controversial issues involving the team: players gets unset and leave the program, he’s late recruiting the state of ga every year, he wait too long to hire a dc, oc, strength and conditioning coach and now special team coach. Does this sound like man who cares about winning championships?

I honestly believe Mr Richt is a better coach than Nick Saban but he could careless to win championships for uga.

While the odds may be stacked against UGA, they have not given up on recruiting Tony Parker. It’s widely believed that Ohio State, UCLA, and Duke are the favorites to land the McDonald’s All-American, but he’s still talking to the UGA coaches frequently and I’m told he’s given them reason to believe they still have a shot. He’s already visited for a few games this year, and will be in Athens again next weekend for the Vanderbilt game. Don’t discount his friendship with UGA signee and Miller Grove teammate Brandon Morris and remember that UGA PF/C Donte Williams is one of his former teammates who he really looked up to early in HS career.

Ohio State has been on Parker very hard for a long time and have done a great job convincing him that he could be their next Jared Sullinger, which is appealing to him. If Sullinger decides to stay at Ohio State next year, I’ve heard that could hurt their chances. With UCLA, they are in the mix for the same reason they landed Jordan Adams; assistant coach Korey McCray has coached Parker in AAU with the Atlanta Celtics and they have a great relationship. The only problem with UCLA would be the distance from home. Duke has also been heavily involved in Parker’s recruitment for over a year now, but word on the street is that Parker’s not real interested in Duke. It sounds like Duke is where his parents would like him to go because of the great academic situation and the opportunity to play for a legendary coach.

So what are pros and cons about Parker choosing UGA? Well, he’s told me several times he really likes Coach Fox and likes the way UGA used their post players when Trey Thompkins and Jeremy Price were on the roster. He knows he would be the best post player on the roster right away at Georgia. Like I mentioned above, he would be re-uniting with former teammates to potentially form an all-Miller Grove front-court at UGA. Why not UGA? I’ve always believed Tony would prefer to play somewhere in the national spotlight, which is why at certain times he’s also mentioned interest in Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, and UConn.

I still think it will be very hard for UGA to land Parker, but crazier things have happened in recruiting.
