If you missed it -– and if you did here’s the story -– there was a pretty interesting meeting of the UGA Athletic Association board of directors yesterday at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall.
The board got another upbeat financial report and voted to spend almost $4 million on several facilities projects (details in story), but the two topics that might interest you the most pertained to Mark Richt’s contract extension and a college football playoff.
UGA President Michael Adams pronounced the parties “in 98 percent agreement” on Richt’s contract extension and said the remaining 2 percent “is just minor details.” Adams said the executive committee of the athletic board could reconvene by teleconference to approve the deal when it is done.
As for a playoff, Adams added to the recent indications that momentum is finally building toward one, telling the executive committee: “My best guess is we’re going to end up with either a four- or eight-team playoff by the time we get to ‘14.” That assessment came a couple of days after a report that the Big Ten, long a playoff opponent, is warming to the possibility — a shift that Adams called “a very significant development.”
So what are your thoughts about a playoff for college football? An idea long overdue? Or one that should be left to other sports? And if one really is on the horizon for college football, how do you think it should work?

I for one would hate to see every BCS conf represented. That means that one of the 8 slots would come from the big east. Thats not fair to other teams that are actually good. One of the top 8 teams would get screwed over by this.
ACC for that matter as well. I dont want to see them get in if their best team is outside the top ten.

I am hopeful every year, have been for many years. I remember years when I woulda been happy with 9 wins.
Not any more – not with the talent and budget at UGA.
Anyway, not gonna trade insults with you TDF. Just skip past my posts – like I do yours when I don’t see my name at the top.
We can both be Dawgs and not have the same opinion on everything UGA.

I do. The BCS set a precedent by not allowing UGA in the NC for not winning its conf. But yet Bama was allowed to get a second chance at LSU. Everyone knew all year long who ever won the first game was going to be representing the SEC west in the Dome. And likely in the NCG.
Okie St played a tough schedule and played some really good teams and won. Granted their loss was 100 times worse than bamas. But the fact that bama had already gotten a shot at LSU, no to mention it was a bama home game at night in a rowdy stadium. You had your shot and blew it. it was okie states turn to take on LSU and they got hosed worse than UGA did in 07.

F 16 team confrences, eight division winners qualify for a playoff. Keeps the importance of regular season. keeps confrence championship game for confrence money. My idea FWIW

Got it my bad. I like that idea. Let them all get a say in who goes and who doesnt. Only bad part is they will all be pulling for their best teams to get a shot. If they set parameters though that the team had to be ranked in the top 10 to be selected then i could really see this working

I understand that, and Im not trying to start anything. I just hate seeing fellow bulldogs whinning about this so called hump we cant get over. That so called hump was formed when BVG left and in came CWM. That hump has been reduced big time since CTG came in and in the next few years (Granted next year is going to be our best shot) that hump will gone.
When I comment to you from now on see it as trying to cool your anxiety on the Dawgs and our program. You really need to check out leatherhelmetblog.com those guys are the best out there. The importance of the regular season and conf champs wont be deminished by a playoff that doesnt give every conf champ a slot.
If you think about it, it puts more importance on them. If you had to be a top 10 team to make it into the discussion then every game would count. And the conf champ game would become huge bc it would allow a team that might be borderline top 10 a chance to jump up with the extra game.
when you make it so every champion gets in all that does is make teams only care about conf games and OOC games just become a distraction. You could have teams that are 8-0 in conf play but 0-4 OOC make it into a playoff.

TDF — it was the Big 12’s turn to get burned by the BCS. They had it go their way too many times in the past. Nebraska in 01 — played in bcs title game w/o winning their conference. Oklahoma in 04 got in after losing the Big 12 title game. Both of those teams LOST in the title game as well. So, There has been precedent set that you can get into the big game w/o winning your conference.
The Auburn team in ‘05 is still the biggest tragedy of the bcs era. Going un-defeated in the best conference in the Country, only to see Oklahoma(AGAIN) get slaughtered by USC.

I would like to see an 8 team playoff but there are 2 obstacles: 1. the presidents of the universities claim they don’t want to add any more games and a playoff would would make it a 16 game season for the 2 finalists (12 regular season games + a conference title game and 3 playoff games) and 2. the BCS bowls.
I just don’t see the big bowls with all the money and political pull behind them allowing a playoff system that makes their bowls irrelevant.
I think a 4 game playoff involving the bowls has a much better chance of being put in to place.

Actually, and I hate to admmit it, but if you compare Richts numbers when he called the plays and was winning the SEC and bobos numbers………. bobo is better in almost every category except beating top opponents, he isnt anywhere near Richts record.
If Richt can teach him how to win these big games will the right play calling and the right time to stomp on the gas and the right time to slow it down (AKA the feel for a big time game) ……. well it could be something magical.

Big Crimson 75, Auburn was left out of the 2005 title game because OU and USC were ranked ahead of them all season and were undefeated as well. In addition, The War Eagles had a very weak OOC schedule that season.
I don’t recall anyone predicting the Trojans would maul the Sooners that game.
In any other year Auburn would have probably played in the title game.

I’m not blind to the politics of college football. If Oklahoma or TX had 1 loss in the big 12 instead of Okie St — then we get left out.
Believe me, I thought we were finished after Nov 5th.
Okie St just doesn’t have the pedigree to jump ANY 1 loss SEC team.
I like their Coach, a colorful character to say the least, but they haven’t been relevant in decades & probably won’t be for another string of decades.

Believe it or not — Joey Harrington actually got hosed in 01. The Ducks finished 3rd if memory serves & drilled whomever in the Fiesta Bowl b/c the big one(Miami & Nebraska) was in the rose that yr.
‘04 was the yr Auburn got hosed….USC finished the reg season #1 & Oklahoma finished #2 with the Barn #3.
USC beat Oklahoma something like 55 – 10 for the title.
Auburn may not have beaten USC, but the Trojans would not have hung a double nickel on the Barn.

Yea I would agree Auburn has gotten the worst hose in college football history. But that was before the SEC dominance got the nod.
this current system just has to go. The only time its ever right is when it gets lucky.
The good thing though about bama getting in, is it is forcing the playoff system to become reality. They other presidents were not happy seeing an all SEC final and it got them to change their minds about a playoff system.

the SEC has been calling for a playoff for years. We were the first to bring it up & forced our little sister, the ACC, to go along with whatever we told them.
It’s another reason TDF, the big 12 didn’t deserve the nod this year — they voted against it along with their buddies from the big 10 & pac 10.
Betcha they don’t vote against one now!!!!!!

Not so fast my friends on that LSU to the SECCG next year……
We may have a little something to say about that!
LSU is in shambles right now….. Miles is under heat again, they are losing better juniors to the draft than we are, Russell Shepphard, Jarrett Lee & the Hebert posse are taking shots at Miles.
Plus, LSU has a big un-known @ QB next year.
This was their year & they blew it.

I want the best team to win the NC and the larger the playoff the less chance that happens. That’s my point about basketball. Anymore than four teams is a bad idea. Just because you’re a conference champion doesn’t mean you belong. The ACC has not had a team worthy to be in a playoff in years. As much as I dislike the SEC, if they have the four best teams, so be it.

In my mind they desrved the nod in this CURRENT system. But a lot of belief is based off of UGA getting hosed in 07. I firmly belive though that ESPN had the most say so in both, which is really sad bc most of the ppl on there are dumber than a box of rocks and homer central to their schools (Excpet Mark May, who should switch from Bama back to USCw d1ck this year since they are off of probation) Lou is just as bad with his ND crap. Thats why i dont watch it anymore.
