The dismissal last week of three Georgia football players coupled with the legal trouble facing Sanders Commings has left put the Bulldogs in a pinch in the secondary.
Initially thought to be a team strength heading into the 2012 season, Georgia’s defensive backfield is suddenly left precariously thin and extremely vulnerable after head coach Mark Richt booted off the team Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders. Including the departure of three other defensive backs since the start of last season — Jakar Hamilton, Derek Owens and Jordan Love all left, allegedly of their own volition — that leaves the Bulldogs with just nine scholarship defensive backs heading into spring practice next month.
Included in that number is senior and starting cornerback Sanders Commings. However, Commings is not expected to be available for at least the first couple of games next season due to his arrest on a domestic violence/simple battery charge last month. Unless those charges end up getting dropped, Commings is likely looking at a suspension of at least two games.
Game 2 is, of course, on the road against pass-happy Missouri. The Tigers return starting quarterback James Franklin, leading receiver T.J. Moe and two other receivers with 20 or more catches from last season. Meanwhile, they added wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, the nation’s No. 1 overall recruiting prospect, on national signing day.
The Bulldogs will play most of the season with four senior starters — Commings and Branden Smith at the corners and Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams at the safeties. Rising sophomore Damian Swann figures to fill in for Commings. But Swann is likely to be the starting nickelback as well and, as we’ve seen, Georgia probably plays 66 percent of the time in its nickel package.
So which players will be the sixth and seventh defensive backs on the field for the Bulldogs is the real issue here. It will have to come from a group that includes sophomore safeties Marc Deas, Corey Moore and Quintavious Harrow, redshirt freshman Devin Bowman and true freshman and recent signee Sheldon Dawson of Memphis. Georgia also has several walkons in the secondary, including juniors Blake Sailors and Luis Capella and sophomore Connor Norman. But generally if you’re having to play walkons you’ve got problems.
The lack of depth could affect the Bulldogs in other places as well. Branden Smith, for instance, was expected to return kicks and take some snaps on offense. But the Bulldogs might need to weigh the risk of Smith multitasking against the possibility of injury and/or fatigue. They’re going to need Smith to play great on defense next season, first and foremost.
And what about Georgia’s defense beyond this season? Again, all four starters are seniors. Who are the cornerbacks of the future? Are they on campus yet? Are there some 2013 prospects that are good enough to come in and start in the SEC?
Granted, that is a somewhat pessimistic view. As we’ve seen from defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, he has a decidedly NFL mentality when it comes to playing time, keeping his starters in the game for the entirety regardless of time or score. And his very mantra is to put the 11 best players on the field regardless of their declared position. You’ll never hear a coach, particularly that one, say they can’t get it done.
Here’s another thought: Would Georgia dare play Malcolm Mitchell on that side of the ball? The rising sophomore was the Bulldogs’ most explosive wide receiver last season. But he was, after all, considered one of the best DBs in the nation coming out of Valdosta High. Could he play defense even part-time?
All food for thought. It’s not my intention to preach doom-and-gloom for Georgia’s secondary. Again, at full strength and with everybody present and accounted for, there are few defensive backfields in the nation that can compare. But suffice it to say, injuries or further attrition of any sort could spell big trouble for this secondary.
Again, a brief rundown:

WALKONS

25 Losses over the last 6 years now, more than 4 a season
_______________________________________________
What is different now today from what we have been doing the last 6 seasons ?
What is different for 2012 ?
A I say great recruiting class.
Haven’t we averaged the # 7 recruiting class averaging both Rivals and Scout.com over the entire 12 Mark Richt recruiting classes ?
YES.
This year # 11 recruiting class.
Again, what is different this 2012 season from 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006 ?
Nothing.
But, we had such a “great year 2011″
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
We played 4 teams who ended up top 25
LOST ALL 4
The year before we played 5 teams who ended up top 25
LOST ALL 5
Over the last Six (6) Seasons, we average over 4 losses every year
______________________________________________________
HOW GREAT IS THAT ?
NOT.
2005 was 8 seasons ago now this up-coming 2012 season, 8 seasons ago when last we won SEC.
End up # 3 SEC in every poll that year, 2005 beat # 6 LSU
Only other 2 years we beat team who ended up top 10, # 5 SEC in every poll both 2001 (4 losses) and 2006 (4 losses.)
Mark Richt in his 11 years has beat teams finishing top 10 a grand total of 3 times out of 13 games. Those 3 years, he Lost 4 games, he Lost 3 games and he Lost 4 games. He ended up the # 5 team in SEC in every poll 2001, # 3 team in SEC in every poll 2005, and # 5 team in SEC in every poll 2006. Those are the only 3 years he beat a team who ended up in the top 10.
# 32 in won/loss record last 4 years at 34-19 last 4 years 8-5 average for UGA, the same for us as South Carolina and Georgia tek 34-19 and we are the # 11 team all-time in 1-A wins

Malcome Mitchell was one of the best defensive back’s in Georgia and would have gotten more recognition nationally if he wasn’t so accomplished as a receiver. Because of Keith Marshall , Gurley and Crowell Georgia will have a much better running game in 2012 and more balanced offense which will let Mitchell get a lot of practice this spring as a defensive back. Gurley will get some practice there as well. I’m sure Grantham has already discussed this with CMR.
Can’t wait to see how much better our defense can get after another season going through Coach T’s Strength and Conditioning program. Our line will be much better. A kid’s development from high school to Freshman is a big change but most of the Freshmen only have one month to become conditioned which isn’t enough time but the change from Freshman to Sophomore can be much more noticeable because the player can work on his Strength and Conditioning all year and something tell’s me that Grantham will have the defense ready.

It will be fine Mitchell can play some snaps at DB if needed especially if Justin Scott-Wesley steps up and uses that world class speed to be the deep threat at WR. WR is the strength of the team so Mitchell really can play defense this year and the WR core should still produce well without him.

If that stat is correct – Richt career 3-13 vs Top 10 teams, that’s just incredible. Hell, Les Miles beat at least 3 Top 10 teams in one season, 2011.
Yet the Richt-bots (and as always, myself) are again salavitating at the thought of Richt leading us to glory, as spring approaches.
Yeah right. Like the Techies claim, we are delusional . . .

Depth should never be a problem @ a school like UGA. We are always 1 or 2 injuries/suspensions away from being dangerously thin at a couple of positions every year. Last year, it was a lack of depth @ RB, now it seems the DB’s are shallow. And don’t enven get me started on the OL. Richt should sign a minimum of 4 OL and DB’s every year.

I realy hope Georgia signs the player from GMC! Georgia will be fine. Looking at some of the prospects that didn’t sign, there are a few OL’s that were rated at 3 that possible could help Georgia.
I still can’t understand for the life of me why Georgia will not give some of these guys an opportunity to come to Georgia and see what they can do?
I am really stunned to see that they haven’t went after R.J.Robinson or one of the other rb’s that want to come to Georgia.
If Coach Richt believes what he says, and I believe he does, he will search the kids out and get them to Georgia and let them prove what they can do.
The hell with the recruiting class ratings, Boise State sure didn’t need it, or Arkansas for that matter!
C’mon Coach get them inside the Georgia program ! They deserve at least an opportunity to prove what they can do- also what about players from Missouri, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and other states?

DBs and OL is going to cost the dawgs alot of games this season with an easy schedule. The dawgs were out of shape the last few game. I can understand CMR doing as he always does before a bowl game a letting players eat and get lazy. We are used to that one ex. WV. The LSU game is an example of how far this program has slipped away the past 7 yrs. I don’t see why CMR give up the thrown to another coach. His days are over at Uga. NO INTENSITY AT ALL FROM A HEAD COACH IS NEVER GOOD. MAYBE AT A JC.

The word on the street is the dogs are after DB’s and corners. Has anyone heard about that kid up in HIGDEN, GILMER COUNTY? His name is Boynton Tummer. This kid missed most of his junior season and part of his senior year due to medical issues. He has been “off the radar” for that reason. His coaches say that Johnson (GT) and Sabin (Bama) have been inquiring about this wunderkid. Where is CMR? Make the ride up to North Ga and watch him. He runs track, he’s so fast you would think he was STEALING, (sorry, could not resist that one). Cover skills and loves to hit. Google the name, watch the tapes, don’t let this one slip through your fingers dogs.

With the three kids that were jettisoned by UGA for issues, UGA has approximately 8 or 9 extra schollys to offer. Offer one to the GMC player, Mario Alford, the fast kid to come in grow, develop and learn to play D back for 3 years and to be used like U of Florida did with Demps or Rainey in special situations. He is a kid that we definitely can use. Nice kid too, apparently. I hope that UGA offers him soon.
With the other 7? UGA schollys, let us find some inteliigent, solid, big, beefy kids to come in from JUCO or HS kids still on the board and play a red shirt role and learn their foot work and O line technique, study hard and at least be able to serve in back up roles as O linemen. UGA back in the day, signed linemen and they developed itno AA O linemen but they did not play until usually, their Junior Year. We need to devlop some future depth on the O line.
For too many years now, UGA each year starts out in September with maybe 7 or 8 O linemen, then we have to play them every snap in every game. THESE EXTRA schollys can solve that problem. It is a SILVER LINING.

Start recruiting kids that actually want to get a degree from UGA, have a clean track record, and can qualify academically like other normal students, and you might be surprised that you no longer have trouble makers in your program as we seemed to have gotten away from morals, values & character!

1955 A Sugar Bowl win for GT !!!
1967 Orange Bowl loss to an average Florida team
2009 Orange Bowl loss to slow Iowa, who has not been heard from since, even though they held Nesbitt and Dwyer to – 55 yds in the first half.
THIS IS Tech’s MAJOR bowl history, Now, watch them come back with Blubonnnet Bowl or Gator Bowl or Chic Fil A Bowl noise. This historic piece is about TECH”S MAJOR BOWL history over the last 56 years and it is for all the world to see. THREE ( 3 ) count em, three majors in 56 years.
Citrus in 1990? No, that was then a very low level mediocre bowl that was held and GT with Colorado and Miami and maybe ND and one or two or three more schools, won a pro rata share of the MN in 90. Citrus was NOT A MAJOR BOWL then and this piece is all about Tech’s sad MAJOR BOWL history or a lack thereof.

People, CMR can’t baby sit these guys 24/7. They did what they did and CMR dismissed them from the team as he should have. What the heck else can the man do but what he did. They stole from their own teammates for gods sake! Many other coaches would smack them on the hand, make them get up at 5 AM and run their tails off and apologize to their teammates. CMR did the right thing dismissing them from the team. They would never be respected by the team from here on out and it would make matters worse with them staying than being dismissed. We will be fine guys and gals. Do not go into a panic mode on this one! We’ll sign some JUCO DBs next year to cover this situation until we get some top high school DBs. It’s not like we don’t have the extra scholarships to get them. They’re already contacting some JUCO DBs now for next year. One of them is from my home town.

Yes you are the retard bc you cant read.
I clearly said you cant compare GT to us bc they play in the ACC you clown, which doesnt have near the talent the SEC does at any position or any facet of the game.
SCjr will not win a 3rd sorry. Shaw isnt that good and will get dominated in SEC play this year. LAttimore will be a shell of himself if anything with the way spurrier works that poor kid.

Sounds like they need to get some of those young returining players some PT this year. They will have to step in and take over in 2013. Sign a few top guys this year and you should be ok. However, considering UGA can never seem to mount a big enough lead against an opponent to take out any starters I don’t see that happening.

By the way. With the players they have on the offensive side of the ball Branden Smith should not be needed!!

Must be doing another one of you retarded 4 hour posts about something else you know absolutely nothing about. I cant wait to rip it to shreds like every single other one of your garbage posts.
Keep wasting your time doing research that will only make you look dumber and prove my points even further. I bet your starting to regret ever posting this and wasting half your day looking up the facts and formatting your posts in word.
