ATHENS — Three players have been kicked off the Georgia football team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
UGA coach Mark Richt announced this morning that defensive back Nick Marshall, wide receiver Sanford Seay and defensive back Chris Sanders have been dismissed from the team. All three are freshmen and were members of Georgia’s 2011 “Dream Team” recruiting class.
The school did not address what precipitated the dismissals.
“It’s a privilege to play college football and to be a part of this team and University,” Richt said in a statement. “Along with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Mistakes were made, and part of our job is helping them learn from mistakes. Going forward, we are committed to assisting them find opportunities where they can continue their education.”
Marshall’s high school coach, Mark Ledford, was reached by the AJC this morning.
“I don’t want to comment on what Nick did,” said Ledford, head football coach at Wilcox County High. “All I’ll say is I’ve been informed he is going to be released from UGA. As far as the details, I’d rather wait and see what Georgia is going to say officially.”
Marshall, a former AJC Super 11 player, was expected to play a significant role in Georgia’s secondary next season. He played sparingly as a cornerback and nickelback and extensively on special teams as a true freshman last season. A four-star prospect as a guard, he was also expected to join the Bulldogs’ basketball team at some point.
“There were going to be a lot of opportunities for him,” Ledford said. “It’s a shame he’s wasting those opportunities at Georgia. He’s going to have to accept the consequences and hopefully learn from them.”
Sanders, an all-state safety at Tucker, played in the first three games for Georgia before being sidelined with an injury the remainder of the season. He was expected to have four years remaining and contribute in the secondary.
Seay, who is from Leesburg, was redshirted last season, while Sanders, who is from Tucker, played in the first three games before missing the remainder of the season because of injury.

“baby you can get away with anything”…..it’s amazing what parents can afford for their kids when the $80k in state expense and the $150k out of state expense gets picked up. We hear about these kids who don’t come from much, but some of these kids come from great families who have money. What is any UGA player doing walking around with $500? Why didn’t you ask Stafford that when he was a Sophomore/Junior?

I love everyone just screaming about Richt and discipline issues, yet if this were at bama, auburn, or Florida we wouldn’t have heard about this at all and they would have swept it under the rug.

This is the Georgia Way! I hate it for these kids. They did something apparently extremely stupid and severe. They made a mistake. CMR is all in favor of second chances, and he should be. This was so severe that he didn’t give them a second chance. These kids will land on their feet, probably at one of our SEC competitors. For those Dawg fans that want a program with character… this is what we need. Again, better to have character than characters!

Are you really going to argue that GT has as anywhere near as many problem players as UGA?

Is there no end to the drama the is UGA football under CMR? Do other programs sweep this stuff under the rug or do they have better control of their players. Either way, CMR needs to over-recruit every year just to account for such player stupidity. Instead, he leaves schollys on the table every year so he can reward walkons. No doubt we’ll see both these guys playing for Auburn, Tenn or Bama next season.

Probation for the $312 in STILL-TAGGED and RETURNED merchandise? That’s right, the NCAA always disciplines the SEC as fairly as they do everybody else so you must actually think Tech’s penalty was warranted.

Good Job Coach Richt and UGA. The young men need to be held accountable for their actions and realize it is not a right to play for GA but a priviledge.Hopefully the young men will learn from this and move on.

@two idioitic posters…”just saying and “Travis Mcgee” first of all practically all the problems that thought they had a chance with Marshall were after him,….not just UGA…2nd…to address Mr. McGee, the dawgs are very thin at Marshall’s position, so your comments about Coach Richt’s reasons are absolutely absurd…What they did cannot be accepted, regardless of who they were and yes Marshall was being counted on very heavily and also had plans to play Basketball alos…I’m sure this was a difficjult decision for Coach Richt with these players, but it had to be done…Hipefully these young men will grow from this and be better for it…We hall have made mistakes and its how you handle the consequesces from that point on that matters….So take your hate comments somewhere else…but you won’t….

In the past three years, Ole Miss, Florida (Cam Newton)and now Georgia have dismissed players from their teams for stealing….congratulations for doing the right thing……Alabama had two starters that were caught breaking into a vending machine for money (stealing) and all they had to do was run steps. I’ll bet they really learned their lesson. Saban and his coaches looked the other way…It will be interesting to see who offers Marshall first…Bama or LSU !

Shame for both of these young men, Nick would have seen a lot of playing time this year baring injury, hate it for both of them. Funny how the trolls would say CMR was soft if he gave them a second chance and when he doesn’t it must mean we were deep at their positions..sad really.

I bet they enroll at LSU….Heck there you can get a full scholly after getting kicked out of a school for sexual battery, become a team MVP and starting quarterback for beating a guy half to death outside a bar, and become a Heisman finalist and national icon for getting suspended for smoking pot….Maybe that’s why UGA will never win any Championships….They don’t know how to look the other way when it comes to guys that can help them win like LSU, Auburn, and Bammer

Well this sucks. Nick Marshall was supposed to be a HUGE get for us, and an athletic specimen that had recruitniks salivating over his diversity and talents. Guess his character didn’t match his ability. Sad news, but I am very glad the program won’t sit back and let this crap to continue to happen. These kids have a wonderful opportunity to receive a $100,000 education that can support them after sports, and an opportunity to play for a program that can bring them millions in the professional ranks. If $500 was a bigger deal, than these guys need to be sent back to the streets where they belong and $500 can get you shot. I hope this is yet ANOTHER lesson to the other guys and recruits that it won’t be tolerated. Go Dawgs!!!

Clearly these two are not college material if the accusations are true. Stealing money from student dorms. Dorm life is quasi-communal – you can’t lock up all your stuff. If one cannot be trusted among your own student peers, your future is dim…
Kudos to UGA for handling this with appropriate severity (was it the school or the Athletic Dept.?).
Unfortunately, miserable human beings who can play football will be welcomed by other football universities under the cover of “every one deserves a second chance.” Auburn comes to mind (Cam Newton – stole a fellow student’s laptop).

Better disciplinary tactic than kicking them off the team – KEEP them, work their a$$e$ off, and never let them see a down of football on game day. They never get what they covet – the lime light and a shot at the NFL. Suspensions and cutting them loose means nothing when they can wind up at Auburn, TN, or LSU. Make it impossible to get a shot at the big time and the BS will stop.

As far as awarding scholarships to walk on’s, I think the coaches would rather give a scholarship to a player they have coached for a year or two and thus know if they can play on Saturdays, rather than giving a scholarship to a marginal high school player they really know nothing about.
