ATHENS — Three players have been kicked off the Georgia football team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
UGA coach Mark Richt announced this morning that defensive back Nick Marshall, wide receiver Sanford Seay and defensive back Chris Sanders have been dismissed from the team. All three are freshmen and were members of Georgia’s 2011 “Dream Team” recruiting class.
The school did not address what precipitated the dismissals.
“It’s a privilege to play college football and to be a part of this team and University,” Richt said in a statement. “Along with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Mistakes were made, and part of our job is helping them learn from mistakes. Going forward, we are committed to assisting them find opportunities where they can continue their education.”
Marshall’s high school coach, Mark Ledford, was reached by the AJC this morning.
“I don’t want to comment on what Nick did,” said Ledford, head football coach at Wilcox County High. “All I’ll say is I’ve been informed he is going to be released from UGA. As far as the details, I’d rather wait and see what Georgia is going to say officially.”
Marshall, a former AJC Super 11 player, was expected to play a significant role in Georgia’s secondary next season. He played sparingly as a cornerback and nickelback and extensively on special teams as a true freshman last season. A four-star prospect as a guard, he was also expected to join the Bulldogs’ basketball team at some point.
“There were going to be a lot of opportunities for him,” Ledford said. “It’s a shame he’s wasting those opportunities at Georgia. He’s going to have to accept the consequences and hopefully learn from them.”
Sanders, an all-state safety at Tucker, played in the first three games for Georgia before being sidelined with an injury the remainder of the season. He was expected to have four years remaining and contribute in the secondary.
Seay, who is from Leesburg, was redshirted last season, while Sanders, who is from Tucker, played in the first three games before missing the remainder of the season because of injury.

This is sooo stupid.Who cares if a college student smokes a little weed? It’s not like there aren’t 20,000 other kids on campus that try it during their time in Athens.
I also don’t understand why these kids are even tested for marijuana in the first place. Other students aren’t tested. Why do the players have to be?
I understand testing them for anabolic steroids b/c those are dangerous to their health and can give them an unfair advantage in amateur competition.
But kicking somebody off a team forever for failing a stupid pee test? That’s just stupid!!!

Seems that one of the Georgia players had $500 and these guys wanted their fair share. What kind of team mate has 500 bucks and doesnt give at least half of it to his team mates. They were just taking what should have been theirs!!

Typical UGA comments. If it really is smoking week, it’s illegal and if you pee in a cup for a empolyer’s drug test you don’t get hired and if you get hired and pee in the cup and it shows up your fired. Welcome to the real world.

Every other program would have ignored what these kids did and coverd it up. CMR acted swiftly and it was the correct thing to do.
Unlike the lieing cheating program at techwood Georgia doesn not wait for the NCAA to force them to act.

If Chris Petersen was the hc @uga Nick Marshall would be the starting qb and Washaun Ealey would have set the ncaa record for touchdowns. Mr Richt tells his rbs that if they can’t block that they can’t play but Vince Dooley told Herschel Walker ” It’s ok son if you don’t know the plays, we will pitch out to you and you just take it to the house”.

This incident opens up three opportunities for smart thinking students to join the team. Each of these young men should be extremely thankful and grow up IF they get another chance somewhere else. The burden is now truly upon each of them to work hard to redeem themselves and regain the trust, respect and admiration of administrators, coaches and teammates like they previously enjoyed.

As I have been trying to say, amidst the noise that it is junk to say it, is that
SHELDON DAWSON
4-Star # 11 best cornerback in the nation a burner with 4.4 speed according to Scout.com, is a crucial sorely needed player who even before last night, was likely to Start at Cornerback replacing SUSPENDED Sanders Commings against Buffalo bills and Mizzou we know.
This is all so tragic. 26 kicked-off transferred out whom Mark Richt gave Scholarships to to play here this 13-1 season up-coming 2013. I’ll spare you the list and my analysis of it. Obviously we needed, as I stated more OL and more secondary players. To-date we have lost 1 to graduation, 1 to suspension multiple games including Mizzou, 2 more today both of whom would have been about the only players on Defense returning for 2014, since all the rest of the defense is GONE after 2012.
2012 ? Secondary ?
Excuse me, I said what if there are suspensions, transfers, kicked-off, run out of the program players like the 24 previous, now 27 previous.
Oh yeah…
Wait for it now…

There’s a big difference between slinging the ball, and being able to read defenses. Nick didn’t have to read defenses in high school. Big difference between single A football and D-1 football. Plus he was going to try and play basketball as well.
That’s why he wasn’t playing quarterback.

The championship team Wilcox had two plays:
1) Spread it out and tell everyone to get open
2) Spread it out and tell everyone to go long
Then if the defense kept up with the recievers, they told Nick to run.
It takes more than that to be a D-1 QB.

Awesome!!! once again another fine group of high character young men…. they just made a mistake…. they will be …… uh suspended one half against buffalo to teach them a lesson…. i guess character is something that espn rankings ignore…. sounds like UGA is getting ready to make another run at the fulmer trophy… unless they cover it up as always with the help of the official UGA news rag the AJC.
