3 players dismissed by Georgia for team rules violations

ATHENS — Three players have been kicked off the Georgia football team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

UGA coach Mark Richt announced this morning that defensive back Nick Marshall, wide receiver Sanford Seay and  defensive back Chris Sanders have been dismissed from the team. All three are freshmen and were members of Georgia’s 2011 “Dream Team” recruiting class.

The school did not address what precipitated the dismissals.

“It’s a privilege to play college football and to be a part of this team and University,” Richt said in a statement. “Along with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Mistakes were made, and part of our job is helping them learn from mistakes. Going forward, we are committed to assisting them find opportunities where they can continue their education.”

Marshall’s high school coach,  Mark Ledford, was reached by the AJC this morning.

“I don’t want to comment on what Nick did,” said Ledford, head football coach at Wilcox County High.  “All I’ll say is I’ve been informed he is going to be released from UGA. As far as the details, I’d rather wait and see what Georgia is going to say officially.”

Marshall, a former AJC Super 11 player, was expected to play a significant role in Georgia’s secondary next season. He played sparingly as a cornerback and nickelback and extensively on special teams as a true freshman last season. A four-star prospect as a guard, he was also expected to join the Bulldogs’ basketball team at some point.

“There were going to be a lot of opportunities for him,” Ledford said. “It’s a shame he’s wasting those opportunities at Georgia. He’s going to have to accept the consequences and hopefully learn from them.”

Sanders, an all-state safety at Tucker, played in the first three games for Georgia before being sidelined with an injury the remainder of the season. He was expected to have four years remaining and contribute in the secondary.

Seay, who is from Leesburg, was redshirted last season, while Sanders, who is from Tucker, played in the first three games before missing the remainder of the season because of injury.

Intheknow,

Look at the draft #’s since Saban arrived at Bama. Not that it really matters to us, but Bama is THE SEC leader in recent NFL draft signings. We ‘Bama fans like crystal footballs. You can go to rolltide.com and view our titles since CMR can’t seem to win one for you UGA fans

It appears these three, if guilty of the same thing, had their own little mafia going. I think Forrest Gump said it best, “Stupid is as stupid does”. They threw away an great opportunity here.

Good for Coach Richt. Discipline comes from the top and will only strengthen the team. No coach can predict how young men will act once in college, Just Sayin, so you must have a crystal ball or, perhaps, are just jealous.

If 22 SEC titles and 14 National Titles is considered mediocre then what does that make UGA’s program?

You do know your program was littered with mediocrity before Saban arrived? Keep riding on your high horse while you can because he won’t retire there. Hell, he might even go to Auburn!

12 NATIONAL TITLES is pretty nice mediocrity.

I know you wish he would leave, but even your UGA alumni at Alabama do not want to leave. KS..

Anyone who thinks this type of crap doesn’t go on at schools that recruit the same players is a naive person. Some schools just hide it….See current champ and former champ.

No Monkey, I don’t, because unlike you I have morals, something Saban does not have, and undoubtedly you either, if you think what Saban does to those kids is right, stop, and think for a moment, how you would feel if it was you, or your kid on national signing day, you are ready to sign with Bama, and they tell you that you no longer have a scholarship, because another kid just committed, when you had been committed for a year.

Mediocrity is:

In your 8th, 9th, 10th year at a SEC school, with the 4th best high school talent in the country, with 5 first round NFL draft picks, with top 10 recruiting classes for 8 years finishing with a losing record, losing every big game, losing to a Colorado team who did fire their coach, losing to a UCF team in your 9th year, and losing to every ranked team you played with the exception of Auburn, that is what is mediocrity looks like up close and personal.

@ Stanley in Marietta:

You are almost revealing the “Trent Richardson” contract. Unmarried, several illigitimate kids BUT it’s okay. He is a helluva football player and his mama was really enjoying getting paid to babysit her “grand/illigitimate/children”. Is Bama a great institute or what??????????

Some of you appear to be overlooking the fact that LSU has welcomed Mettenberger, who was also booted by CMR, acouple of years ago. Apparently some teams will take ANYBODY regardless but who in their right mind would take in a thief who stole from his friends/teamates…………………………………………….wonder where that $500 came from though?

That is why your program is not winning and that is why he gets paid 5 million a year to make those tough decisions. I do not think anyone will be wondering about him next year or the year after that when Saban and his players are holding that BCS trophy over their heads.

It is about winning and making sure those kids get an education while they are on campus. It is a business, and television made it a business, run it like one.

OUCH. I can’t even argue with that. It really is completely unacceptable. It’s a shame that you really do have to over-sign to get into real contention. I’m not hating on Bama when I say that either, they’re just playing the game for what it is. To each his own.

[...] UGA dismisses players again.  Really?  I dream of realty, but I also dream of UGA having one year go by without a player arrest for a major criminal offense or dismissal of players for behavior related offenses.  I don’t know what led to this particular situation but in general I have some advice for UGA’s recruiting team. Wasn’t Nick Marshall a last minute, surprise switch from Tech to UGA when he was recruited? I can’t help but wonder how things would have worked out had he stuck with Tech. Would he be getting dismissed from Tech for violations of team rules or would he have excelled in Tech’s program and environment? It’s always sad to see wasted potential, no matter what team is involved. Hopefully, he will mature and grow from this expereince.
