UPDATED: Harvey-Clemons never wavered on UGA, just had to convince granddad
8:57 am February 2, 2012, by Chip Towers
ATHENS — Josh Harvey-Clemons said he never wavered on his decision to sign with Georgia. He just had to convince his grandfather that it was the best move.
“I just had to sit down with my family and get everybody on the same page,” said Harvey-Clemons, reached by phone Thursday morning in Valdosta. “He was looking at it as Florida was closer. I’ve got a cousin who still plays at Lowndes and my little brother is going to be in high school next year. Florida is only like an hour and 20 minutes away, so he was thinking about going to games on Friday and being able to drive down to Gainesville easy. That’s why he liked Florida.
“Georgia’s a little farther away but I told him that’s where I wanted to go.”
Harvey-Clemons said he sent over the letter-of-intent via fax Thursday morning at 8:05 a.m. He said Georgia’s coaching staff never panicked and helped him through the dilemma.
“They were fine,” he said of the coaching staff. “They were just telling me to let them know what was going on and I kept calling them. They stayed with me through the whole thing.”
Harvey-Clemons, the top-ranked recruiting prospect in Georgia per several ratings, committed to the Bulldogs on national television on Wednesday. But he never sent in his signed letter-of-intent, supposedly because his grandfather, Woodrow Clemons, refused to sign it.
Mr. Clemons, 51, is the legal guardian for Harvey-Clemons’ and his brothers and sisters. Both of their parents are deceased. Mr. Clemons could not be reached for comment.
Harvey-Clemons said he was relieved to have all the recruiting drama behind him. Now he plans on focusing on getting ready to come to UGA in June.
“I plan on just working hard so I can get bigger and get stronger so I can get on the field when I get up there,” he said.
With Harvey-Clemons sealed and delivered, Georgia now has 19 signees in the Class of 2012. The group was ranked as high as No. 5 by ESPN and moved up to No. 11 from 19 on the Rivals.com list. The Bulldogs remained No. 6 by 247Sports and No. 12 by Scout.
Meanwhile, here’s Harvey-Clemons’ bio:

Good move from the Grand father. The young man has chosen where he wants to play and coach Grantham will coach him up. Do not be surprised if he is red shirted this year, though, as UGA is solid at both of his defensive position for 2012, and on the offense, WR is also not a position of need. I hope he gets into his studies, hits the weight room and puts on the mass he will needs and learns the playbook during this time. He upside is full of potential, and he was drafted with that in mind and I am sure CMR told him as such.

DJ – a little arrogance there? Surely you don’t believe that one has to be a doctor or lawyer to have worth, do you? Do you mean to demean folks who don’t have advanced degrees? Need I remind you that most people in the world are not doctors or lawyers or such. That doesnt’make them bad or “less”. Right?

I have no doubt he has the talent, skill and ability to play his freshman year, but does anyone else think he needs to put on weight? 6′5″ @ 208, he is pretty slender. He will need to put on at least 40 pounds to have any pop against larger backs and tight ends. Plus, OL would just push him around at that weight.

DJ, I can only surmise that you are a gnat based on your pious response, because you folks are the only ones dumb enough to still play the academic card and not see that you have “football player” majors as well AND still have had more recent trouble with academic scandal than at the flagship University in the state. Typical, stupid bug.

The only upside of signing just 19 scholarship athletes this year is that we can give a scholarship or 2 or 3 to some walk-ons who have been busting their chops every week. Most of these guys are getting their heads knocked off week after week by these 4 star recruits. It’s great to reward them (like Brandon Harton) when you can!!

Kind of selfish on the Grand fathers part. This kid chose where he wanted to go, made the announcement, picked up the hat… and old Woodrow was no where to be found all because he didn’t want to drive so far on game day to watch his grand son play ball. Well I tell you Mr. Woodrow, A) way to steal the spotlight from what was supposed to be one of the greatest days in this young mans life and B) There is no place finer in this landscape to gather on saturday mornings in the fall and watch those guys in red and black play ball.

Don’t give me this junk that Mark Richt is better than Nick Saban the entire time Nick Saban has been in The SEC, which is LONGER than Mark Richt has been.

Todd Grantham is a great recruiter. Lucky to have him.
I agree this guy needs to get bigger because at 208, offensive linemen will eat him alive. And even bigger backs in the mold of Marcus Lattimore could tear him up. He definitely needs to get bigger to play OLB in the SEC. Jarvis Jones is 6′3, 241 and he gets it done. Cornelius Washington is 6′4, 260. So those guys are big and ready. JHC will be soon enough.
The guy I’m most excited about is John Theus. Dude could be our starting left tackle game one vs. Buffalo. He has a bright future. Just needs to work hard and get stronger because being a freshman left tackle protecting the blind side of an All-SEC QB is no easy task.

He can put 40lbs of bulk on that frame I’m guessing and I wouldn’t be suprised if he’s 230 by fall. Not saying he’ll be playing vs redshirting, but this worry about his weight is a bit premature. Heck- between my senior year in HS and freshman year in college, I put on 60 lbs….. 30 more lbs is NOTHING with the nutrition and workout programs he will be going thru. He could be a beast for us within the next few years.

You’re right. Theus and Marshall are the biggest recruits in this class. I’m not worried about Theus after I saw him in that Army All-American game. He was playing guard in that game and on running plays he was shoving the DE 10 yards back down field. He was just mauling them. The guy is ready now.

@13-1 Not an ANY front? Career win loos record mean anything? Saban’s – 70.7 Miles’s – 70.3 Richt’s – 73.8 When you take into account that Richt has done all of his in the SEC I think that is one hell of a front. Also, Richt has been a head coach less time and is a few years younger than either. What he was missing is a Grantham (Erk Russell comes to mind) type of defensive coordinator. He is loyal to a fault, which can be a weakness when change is needed. But loyalty pays off in the long run. You do not see him dumping recruits under the bus for the sake of mabe getting someone better. Can you think of anyone who has previously and has done so recently?

Great news for Georgia! Best of luck at Georgia and I believe we will see you playing in NFL after college. That would be awesome to see.
I want to take a moment to thank all who signed with Georgia and too say, you have only made this once again, a recruiting class that Georgia can be proud of and get behind.
I hope all the new recruits are happy with their decision and my appreciateion to them and the Georgia coaches for getting quality over quanitity, everyone has done an outstanding job.
I hope the coaches at Georgia will offer some recruits that didn’t get an offer a chance to come to Georgia as I agree with coach Richt, the star ranking has some value, but the character and desire means more in the long run. There are still some fine young men out there who want a college degree and an opportunity to prove their true worth and ultimately help the University, football team, themselves and their family. After all, isn’t that what the Georgia coaches, especially Coach Richt is all about?
Welcome Mr. Clemons you are wanted, needed and appreciated at Georgia and we are happy about your decision. ONCE AGAIN THANKS TO NEW RECRUITS, THE JUNIORS THAT STAYED AND THE PLAYERS WHO AT GEORGIA !!! —– GO JUNKYARD DAWGS, THEY ARE BACK IN ATHENS——.

Pretty good looking bunch. What I have noticed are less huge players. Instead they recruited players with big “frames” capable of carrying more weight. This will allow UGA to put the weight on them in a proper and supervised way. The ultimate goal may be to develop large players who are more mobile.
I’ve seen this approach work before.

Great defense, revamped offensive line, 3rd season for Murray, good stable of running backs, another solid recruiting class…things are looking up for us Dawg fans and GT fans know it. They read all this good stuff about UGA and they’re envious. I would be too. Must SUCK to be a Tech fan. They get no recognition really. Can’t beat UGA, and can’t get out of their own conference alive. Must SUCK to be a GT fan.

John Theus is a mauler! He’s ready RIGHT NOW! Is he an early enrollee? Boy I hope so. That guy is ready to play left tackle right now! Mark Beard also should be one of our tackles or guards. He’s the JUCO lineman. The line could look like this:
LT: John Theus
LG: Mark Beard
C: David Andrews (Damn I wish Ben Jones had another year)
RG: Chris Burnette
RT: Watts Dantzler

My parents gave me the same thing are you sure do you want to look around maybe, and honestly my dad would have been the same way with me if I played football he wants to be able to watch me if I play not drive 2,500 miles just to watch one game you know. In a perfect world JHC would take a redshirt and develop his body and mind for a breakout redshirt freshman year in 2013. But this is not a perfect world. If history is any indicator, most of the premier athletes are headed for the NFL after 3 years meaning you get 2 years of playing time out of them. I don’t think JHC will be depended on to play much OLB next year, unless it’s mop-up duty, but I do think he could be a great contributor on special teams and red zone offense. We shall see. Go Dawgs!

Todd Grantham has transformed our defense only 2 seasons on the job. In the 2nd season we were top 5 in the country. Top 3 before we faced LSU. No reason why we can’t duplicate that in 2012. I think we’re about to witness something great here at Georgia. We have basically the same defense returning from 2011 with 9 out of 11 starters back and we have so many seniors on that defense that nothing will fool them. Our defense will be senior-led, they’ll be experienced so they won’t make many mistakes. Our defense could be up there with Alabama.

@Birddawg92, 30 years? Are you serious? I do agree we need a dominant front again, but 30 years? Dude we had a dominant line in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and we haven’t had one since really. But we’re getting there. We’re getting bigger and meaner because of Will Friend. Give him time. His 2nd season will be a lot like Grantham’s 2nd season. Dominant.

I can fully understand where the Grandfather was coming from. You never want to be too far away from your family, plus, I’m sure that he was thinking about his bonding business. Since it’s family-run, any time the family wants to go up to Athens, they have to leave somebody who is an employee (i.e.: part of the family) to take care of shop. I’m glad that he signed off, though. Should open a branch of his business in Athens next…keep his son busy!

Saban is a great coach. One of the best if not THE best in college football. Alabama was very wise to hire him, since other schools have already paid for his dues. He started coaching a decade before and had multiple job before Richt even got started. I would hope he would use that to his advantage. Logically 10 yrs from now, Richt will ALSO be a much better coach. Not likely to have the experience of a couple of stints in the NFL during that time, however. So yea, I AM giving you that. You have no choice. It’s there. Deal with it.( Perhaps 3:30 tomorrow am, you can blast aa page long tirade about it.)
Richt may very well never reach the status of Saban right now. Few in history have. But as good as Saban is, he just happens to be the coach of a university which I do not support, so I am less likely to be shoved up his hinny as some folks seem to be.

I’m worried more about our O-line than our defense. Regardless of what anyone says, our defense is great. Who are our tackles going to be on the O-line? I think we have the interior fixed with Andrews at center, Gates and Burnette at guard. But who are the tackles? Theus and Beard? The highlights I’ve seen from Theus he’s been at RT, and Beard isn’t quite tall enough to play tackle. He’s only 6-3. Theus is 6′6. My guess is Beard would play guard and Gates or Burnette could be used for depth, and Theus would be our left tackle.

All this talk about CMR committing a violation yesterday is just bullcrap. CMR saw the same thing we did on tv: JHC put on a UGA hat and said he was going to be a Bulldog and everyone in the room clapped. At the time that espn did the interview he didn’t know what was going on behind the scenes. Should he have waited to see the LOI before commenting? Sure, but he had every expectation that it was a done deal. ESPN went straight to several coaches right after big announcements were made, so I am sure several coaches spoke about players before the actual fax was sent, but that is nit picking at best.

Did any of the critics of the boy’s grandfather ever consider that he loves that boy more than any of us dawg fans ever could and wanted to make sure his grandson was making a sound decision. He probably just wanted to make sure he was not making an emotional decision and one that the Josh fully understood. I imagine they have had several conversations through this process and if Josh’s decision suprised him which it seems like it did, is it not smart for him to make sure. My goodness, don’t question a man’s character because he took 20 hours to make sure with his grandson that it was the right decision for the right reasons.

I hate that Josh choose to go to UGA and the reason I’m stating this comment is because, once these young African American young men eligibility is gone and their academics are in the toliet, these major colleges are done with them. From what I hear he has a good GPA and could have gone to an Ivy League school and became something other than a football player. I can see why his grandfather wanted him to wait and make the best and right decision. For all of you making nasty comment regarding the grandfather, the only thing you guys are concerned about is a WIN! Well I hope he keeps his GPA and academics on the right track and if he doesn’t, I hope thegrandfather will take him out of UGA. Hopefully, he will encourage him place him to attend a school that will challenged him academically and will allow him to use his brain and not his talent.

I know UGA fans love ESPN. Now you’ll love them more as they rank your class so high.
_________________________________________________________
I think ESPN ranks classes in a way that makes more sense than Rivals or Scout. Luginbill said that ESPN ranks based on how a team recruits to what it needs. Kind of like NFL draft grades. Rivals and Scout rank on sheer numbers alone. UGA needed to up grade the running back depth and they did. We also needed to add depth on defense to the LB and D-line positions and we did that too. Alabama was the number 1 class because it had 4 retuning starters on defense and needed to replace those players with defensive play makers and they did that.

1 O-Lineman?
This has been CMR problem the last several years. You got to have a bunch of O-lineman to be able to run and pass protect.
This should be a focus, but for some reason it is not!
The reason AL, LSU and FL in the past are so great is because they had great offensive and defensive lineman. That’s how you control the game.

If my son and I were in disagreement on a major decision regarding his future, I would do everything in my power to cause a sit down. I’d want him to convince me that he was making the decision for the right reasons, and I would challenge him to do so. Josh has a family that loves him, and they want the best for him. No harm, no foul.
Offensive linemen already on the roster includes:
Drake,
Reynolds,
Burnette,
Gates,
Houston,
Lee,
Andrews,
Dantzler,
DeBell,
Hunter Long,
Nathan Theus (John’s brother),
Ward,
Austin Long,
McQuillen, and
Williams.
Plus the three new linemen that makes 18. I don’t know the story on all these guys but two are returning starters and several others have game experience. Its always good to sign another great player but its also time for some of these to step up and fill the role.

For those that are continuing to gripe about not enough OL’s, you are likely forgetting that John Atkins has been signed with the ability to play offense or defense. That decision will obviously be made on need when he arrives on campus, and his ratings are about equal for both sides of the ball, perhaps an even better prospect on the offensive side. That would give us 1.Theus, a consensus all american, 2.Beard, one of the top 5 junior college tackles who will be a sophomore (an unusual 3 years to play juco player with tons of upside and is college ready like Theus), 3.Pyke who some recruiting boards have him as a 4 star recruit in Maryland, and 4.Atkins, the UnderArmour All-American. Maybe this is why ESPN has us as a top 5 class even without the addition of Josh Harvey-Clemons! Go Dawgs!!!

JHC will be a starter in two years and all SEC in three – lining up next to Ogilvie he will be a terror. Muschump did well recruiting. Now he has to produce. Either Kirby Smart will be the head coach at Bammer in two years when Saban leaves or he will be the head coach some where else – maybe Texas. I see LSU winning the west in 2012 if Mettinbubba can keep his hands off the girls and on the ball. If not, it will be Arkansas. Bammer will be 2nd or 3rd in the west. It will be UGA 1st in the east (again), the Gamecrocks 2nd, and Vandy 3rd. Duh’Rick Doody will be return to lawyering after the Tick Hounds finish 5th in the east behind Miss State.

Greenflashlight, I’m very please with Georgia’s signings, we only signed 19 players, and are still ranked #11 on rivals, #13 on scouts, and #5 ESPN, all the other College’s rank higher than Georgia, except for two, Florida St. and USC, signed 3 to 14 more players than Georgia, don’t you think that has something to do with, or why Georgia was not ranked even higher in recruiting?

Clemons shoulld red shirt this year, and then play for 3 years after that, going Pro after he graduates, and after his Jr season.
Should have red shirted Ray Drew this year, Ray wasted his redshirt for 8.5 tackles, not smart.

“John Theus is a mauler!
RT: Watts Dantzler”
I don’t see how Theus will start at the most important position on the line (since Murray is a righty). It is rare for a true freshman offensive lineman. I think he’s going to find out that the game is alot faster at this level especially when he goes up against Georgia’s defense in drills.
La’el Collins was the overall top rated player in Louisiana and the overall #1 or #2 (depending on the recruiting service) offensive lineman in the nation a year ago. As good as he is LSU redshirted him this past season. He won’t even start next season as LSU is only losing one starter, Will Blackwell, a guard, on the line.
Congrats on getting Theus. He’s a big pickup for Georgia. I could be wrong, but if he starts that tells me that the returning offensive linemen are not very good which would be a huge issue for the Dawgs.

I am very excited about him, and about this class. I cannot, for the life of me, understand how saban and others who oversign go unpunished. Furthermore, I cannot understand how these recruits continue to trust him, when all he cares about is wins and his program. We need to step it back up for sure, but we have a big-time program that sends plenty of players ti the NFL, but we DO NOT lie to and trample all over our kids just to win, and he OBVIOUSLY DOES!!

Had 19 to give without resorting to Sabanization. How many did they sign? 19.
That’s not to say that normal attrition will not happen and be a couple short of the max in Sept, which I am sure is why they were prepared to sign a couple more. Personally,Ii like that guys like the Blake Sailors of the team get a chance to be rewarded when the staff errs on the side of doing the right thing, and has a ride to give.

UGA has to report NCAA secondary violation due to comments on Harvey-Clemons | UGA sports blog
February 2nd, 2012
3:47 pm
[...] Shortly after Harvey-Clemons made his announcement in Valdosta, ESPN reporter Cara Capuano asked Richt for his reaction and for his thoughts on prospect’s athletic abilities. Turns out that violates NCAA bylaw 13.10.2, which states that no one from a member institution can comment on a prospective student-athlete until his or her signed letter-of-intent has been received. As has been well-documented now, Harvey-Clemons’ letter-of-intent was not received by UGA until Thursday morning. [...]

To Woodrow and all the other Dawg fans ripping into Muschamp and who accused him of paying off the grandpa yesterday…now you know the story. To be honest, I am glad the kid got to do what he wanted to do instead of what the grandpa wanted. If the grandpa wanted him to go to Florida so bad, why in the world did he put the kid and all the coaches through what he did put them through…..the focus just should have been Florida and he should have committed to Florida a long time ago….and the kid would be going to Florida and they would have a short drive on Saturdays. But a kid going to college should not be about how long or short a drive is….but where the kid feels most comfortable playing and going to school. Obviously, JHC felt Athens was the best place for him. Good for him. Bad for the grandpa…and, in my opinion, the grandpa got what he deserved.

Bad thing about the entire deal was Grandpa said several days before that they did not want any drama like the kid who picked Bama and his mom wanted LSU. Said they would be on the same page and support Josh’s choice wherever he picked. Then to pull that crap yesterday was just totally uncalled for and very selfish if the reason is true. Maybe the media blew it way out of proportion? Made Josh and the family look silly. Glad he is getting to play where HE wants to play and not grandpa’s pick for him. Maybe Grandpa did not realize what he was doing? I hope for his sake that was the case.
Anyone know what happened to his parents? Maybe Grandpa is very overprotective because how Josh’s parents died?

Glad to see I got under the skin of some of you idiots. You had to stop drooling over this 18-year old kid and reply with your wit. You know it’s the truth. And there’s nothing wrong with the kids that go to State U to really major in those areas of study. But your school is a joke when it comes to getting these special admissions in and hidding them in something that doesn’t even require the equivalent of Pre-Algebra. Hey man, I’m happy for you, but call it what it is….a football factory. Go ahead, knock Tech or any other school, but you won’t defend the “education” that most of your ballplayers get. Yep, some will make millions in the pros, but there’s a higher percentage that won’t. That’s not an elitest attitude, it’s the sad truth.

Alabama fans……….I have a question, and I ask it sincerily. There was alot in the recruiting news over the last few weeks concerning a young man who was supposedly offered by Saban months ago. I can’t place his name, but those in the know are aware to whom I am speaking, a RB, I believe. Now this kid was told a couple weeks ago Alabama was out of room [it happens]………..but somehow mysteriously Coach Saban majically came up with a scholarship just in time on Wednesday February 1, to offer and recieve a LOI from the big DT he coveted………….My question, I believe this story to be true, do you?…….also is this an ethical issue [I believe it to be] and do you think this practice is just fine?………….Problem seems to be loopholes in recruiting rules………Some coaches just wouldn’t consider this practice [I wouldn't] and some seem to think crushing a young man’s dreams of playing for the Crimson Tide is A-OK as long as they get their man……………….Something about this whole story makes my stomach sick……..does it yours? After all this is college footbal, not the NFL………………What price are we paying for winning?………Is the playing field level? Please only mature responses…………as my inquiry is heart felt and sincere………….Oh, and by the way, this was not a case of the young man not being committed…………Saban offered months ago, the young man accepted months ago, both solid committments……………Regards, RED

I understand that Georgia will be bringing in Colquitt County’s Preston Mobley, a 6′2 300 pound offensive guard from Moultrie and Grayson’s Devin Gillespie, the state champion’s star defensive back/wide receiver as preferred walk-ons. If so, I like these two over any plan B offers that might have been offered. Nebraska made a habit of building its offensive line during the Osborne era with walk-on offensive linemen similar to guys like Mobley. Gillespie could end up being a player in the mold of Will Muschamp and Tra Battle, former preferred walk-on dbs. Go Dawgs!!
