Recruitment of former UGA commitment Chester Brown ’still open’
Technically, the NCAA recruiting calendar entered the dead period overnight. But the recruitment of Chester Brown is anything but quiet.
Brown, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman from Bradwell Institute and former UGA commitment, took an official visit to Central Florida over the weekend and apparently committed to coach George O’Leary while he was in Orlando. But Bradwell Institute football coach and athletic director Jim Walsh indicated Brown’s recruitment remains a fluid situation.
“I’m not sure of the accuracy of that,” he said of Brown’s UCF commitment. “We’ve had some recent things going on.”
Walsh said some “major schools” entered the picture for Brown over the weekend
“Some of the top SEC and ACC schools called me on Saturday and Sunday,” Walsh said. “I’m actually going to meet with Chester today. We’re going to talk a little and go from there. I would say things are still kind of open.”
Walsh would not say which schools are involved. Most of Georgia’s surrounding state’s have more liberal laws regarding the education of undocumented students and illegal immigrants.
Brown had been committed to UGA since July 15, 2011. But a documentation issue regarding his U.S. citizenship derailed his admission to the state university. Brown, the son of Samoan immigrants who claims to have been born in the U.S., became the victim of a relatively new Board of Regents policy regarding undocumented students. State schools that turn away Georgia residents due to capacity constraints can no longer accept students that can’t prove their U.S. citizenship.
Since news of Brown’s plight broke last week, Walsh said his phone “has been burning up.”
“We’ve had calls from all over the country,” Walsh said. “It’s kind of ridiculous. We’re starting to get now to the point where people are making decisions and some people are losing and some others are gaining. Saturday afternoon and Sunday, my phone has been burning up.”
Meanwhile, Walsh indicated the door isn’t completely shut on Brown attending UGA, his first choice. “Well, we’re constantly working on that,” he said.

I am sure UGA has an immigration lawyer working right this moment to try and locate relevant records and such. I think folks might be surprised at how often birth documents get lost/misplaced/disappear.

Sports made my UGA experience great, BUT “winning & making $” should not win out over education responsibilities. Reserve the student visa route for the honor students who elevate academics and learning for the whole student body.

If Jan Kemp taught us anything, it is that we should just admit we give special treatment and admissions to football players solely based on their ability to play good football and draw crowds and money to the program – and that is the way it should be. College football is only a farm league for the NFL. We should do away with the fiction about “student-athletes”.

Having spent several years in Hawaii and Asia while in the Army, it is a very distinct possibility that this young man was born at home. That practice still goes on routinely in Hawaii. Hence, the difficulty in producing a birth certificate.

The Board of Regents over see’s UGA in all aspects of college life. I think they are dotting all theirs I’s and crossing all thrie T’s before declaring BIG CHESTER BROWN aviable to attend UGA. That will be clear on Wednesday. All Chester Brown has done by going to UCF was to give him a backup plan for College. I do believe that the legal system will resolve any issue concerning BROWN before 2-1-12. He will be a DAWG. Lawyers like Billy Payne a UGA Rep. has had littel sleep since this story broke last week. One thing not to get lost in this debate is the most important; Chester is going to get the opportunity to go to school for free, even if it isn’t at UGA. I would love to have him in Red and Black, but seeing him succeed and do something no one in his family has done before is more important. It is possible that the date he had tattooed on his arm is still an important one; it was the day he learned he had the opportunity to do something that would have seemed impossible a decade earlier. Chester isn’t going to find his paper work because his parents never sought to make him a legal citizen. I agree with what the Board of Regents did. Undocumented or illegal citizens should not be allowed to get a free scholarship. There are many legal U.S. citizens that can’t get in to UGA and someone illegal should not be put ahead of them. Legal citizens pay income taxes that support the schools.

Seems to me that if his parents are Samoan he could claim dual citizenship…at least until they can produce the necessary documentation to prove he was born here, or to apply for and become one should he wish. Although lately I’m not sure why he would – wanna claim the US that is.

Blame the conservative Republican party for that decision. Lived in Georgia several years long ago and there were many bigots. Unfortunately there are more now. I cannot understand why any minority student would want to play at UGA.

To clarify, it’s not a “government” deal. The University System of Georgia, Board of Regents, made the rule.
Seems to me his parents (with help from UGA or alumni) could get a certified birth certificate from whichever municipality in which he was born. Pretty perplexing.
But, like a few others, I wish Mr Brown the best of luck wherever he ends up.

People born in American Samoa are American nationals, but are not American citizens unless one of their parents is a U.S. citizen. American Samoans may not vote in U.S. presidential elections, but can join the US Armed Services and die. American Samoans are entitled to free and unrestricted entry into the United States.
Hence, the need for a birth certificate for another one of GA’s dumbass rule/law…kinda like not being able to buy beer on a Sundays for all these years.
