Ex-UGA recruit Chester Brown and immigration policy
12:09 am January 25, 2012, by AJC Sports
Here’s an update on Chester Brown, the Bradwell Institute offensive lineman who de-committed from UGA on Monday for “personal family reasons.” (Go here to read the full story by the AJC’s Chip Towers)
ATHENS — A relatively new Georgia Board of Regents policy regulating the admission of undocumented students and illegal immigrants has prevented a football recruit from gaining admission to the University of Georgia.
Chester Brown, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman from Hinesville, committed to the Bulldogs in July, but he confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and several other media outlets late Monday night that he was withdrawing his UGA commitment “for personal reasons,” declining to elaborate.
However, a variety of people with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed to the AJC on Tuesday that Brown’s change of heart was because his admissions application to UGA was rejected because of a controversial Board of Regents policy that was adopted in October 2010.
That policy, created in the wake of the Jessica Colotl uproar at Kennesaw State earlier that year, states that an undocumented student can’t take the seat of an otherwise academically qualified Georgia resident who has been turned away because of capacity constraints.

kinda sad to watch so many people take joy in other peoples’ misfortune.
did this kid choose where he is born?
did he choose where his parents moved the family to?
I understand wanting to punish the ones who broke the law. I even understand those who think this is the only way to discourage illegals from bringing their kids to the US.
But to actually take joy and be happy that this kid wont be able to fulfill his dream of attending UGA even though he qualified academically and earned a scholarship athletically. To be HAPPY about that – that’s a sad existence right there. Talkin to you “Too bad so sad”.

Well, didn’t take long for a screwball law written and passed by a holier-than-thou General Assembly to to even affect football recruiting, did it? And, know what? This talented young man will just go to a school where talent is rewarded and appreciated and I hope he does well. Someday this long nightmare of fear of immigrants and shadows in the dark will be over and reason will win out. What a sad and sorry story.

A list of some of the primo jobs that “illegal” aliens are stealing from us: motel maid, yard worker, janitor, fast food worker, chicken plucker, farm hand, ad nauseum. It’s a list of jobs that underpay, are under appreciated, and each of them pays American taxes and puts money into the hands of small businesses like your and mine. Meanwhile, my father-in-law can’t get help to help him get in a crop. Does this make sense? No. The hate and fear has to stop and common sense will make things right…hopefully.

He is not illegal, he is undocumented. He’s been having trouble all year trying to validate his documentation. It’s a real shame that the school system (which has known about this problem for quite some time now) couldn’t help this guy. He seems to be a great kid, represents himself with class and dignity on the field at all times.

If UGA’s dismal recruiting success isn’t depressing enough, reading some of the ignorant, racist, bigoted comments from some “UGA” fans is too much to take. To actually take pleasure in this young man’s situation is foreign to my thinking. And comments about Obama are just plain ignorant. I am not defending his politics because I am Republican, but I cannot believe educated people would make some of the comments about him personally. When will some Southerners and the so called “religious” right realize that spewing the theme of exclusion, hate and priviledge is not consistent with the primciples of Christianity? If you are a UGA fan, then you are embarrassing my school and for the sake of UGA you need to refrain from commenting. How can we ever shed the image of ignorance with people like this.

What part of this tells you that McCain was not born on US Ground and able to be President?
John McCain was born on August 29, 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, to naval officer John S. McCain, Jr. (1911–1981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912). At that time, the Panama Canal was under U.S. control.

I do not have a problem with people wanting to work any job they can get to support themselves or there family. Citizen or none citizen. But damn it pay TAXES on you income as I do! The biggest problem is the none citizens have more “rights” then citizens. And to the ones living off my TAX dollars I will be happy to trade them to Mexico for the ones who want to come here and work. I do know the south Georgia farmers rely heavily on illegals to work there farms and I do not disagree with them. But if you work pay your Taxes!

It appears he is undocumented, not illegal. As to all of you “how can he be undocumented if he’s not a US citizen” crowd, the answer is simple. “S#!t happens.” But of course, you guys think if something hasn’t happened to you, it hasn’t happened to anybody. This presumption that the finite possibilities you have experienced are all possibilities that exist is a real hindrance to this nation’s progress as leader of the free world.

“each of them pays American taxes”
They do not. You know nothing about that which you spout on the Internet. My neighbor is here and has no green card. Neighbor has lived here for 8 years. Neighbor pays NO INCOME TAX WHATSOEVER, while every penny of what I make is reported to the IRS. Repeatedly, I have said to said neighbor how very unfair that is. Neighbor is afraid of US Govt. US Govt sent neighbor letter stating neighbor can not drive in the US. Neighbor owned a truck. Neighbor was able to get insurance. Neighbor sold truck. Neighbor takes taxi to and from work daily.
Now, if we had a FLAT TAX, then neighbor – “each of them pays American taxes” – would pay taxes on purchases by neighbor.
Neighbor has recently purchased a 200-acre farm in home country. Neighbor exported said truck to home country. Neighbor also exported $ 8,000 4-wheeler for said farm in home country. Neighbor has a STAFF here in America where there are 3 people on Neighbor’s payroll. Neighbor takes out NO TAXES from ANY of the 3’s PAY. NONE. Neighbor left to home country 23 December. Neighbor returned home here a few hours ago on 1/25 – gone over a month. Home purchased and paid for in full here, just sat there, and if I didn’t clean up some, it would have all that trash and all those leaves blowing all over my yard, so I did right by the Neighbor.
Don’t come in here and tell me “each of them pays American taxes.”

Josh Harvey-Clemons and Avery Young are rumored as Silent Commits by CEO. Well, Avery Young I could see seeing us – losing 4 Senior Starters on the OL – as a place he can play Freshman Year, then 2 more and go to the NFL.
Josh Harvey-Clemons eyes the Senior-laden Defense of Todd Grantham for 2012 and says, oh, I will be redshirted as OLB. Yes, he would be. We need him a lot more for 2012 class than he needs us. We don’t want to go into next 2013 season staring at the 11 for sure who go pro after the season, all of whom have or will Start. And, there is an outside possibility that with good seasons, 12 Starters on Defense 2012 leave to the NFL.
Where does that leave Josh Harvey-Clemons here at UGA ? Well, it leaves him mop-up duty 2012 here, if not redshirted. Linebacker at UGA is a major need for us 2012 ? Well, it is from the point of view we need some for the departing either 11 or 12 after the 2012 season. Is he going to beat out a guy who is going to the NFL after 2012, during this up-coming 2012 season ? No.
Instead of all this hype about a OLB who really has a clear view that he isn’t playing, or isn’t playing much here 2012, at a position we are stacked at for 2012, what we should be talking about is there are
NO SECONDARY COMMITMENTS AT ALL WHATSOEVER
4 SENIOR-STARTERS GONE OFF THE OL FROM 2011
This is where the news has to come from in the next 6 days. We have a great FB coming in. We have our Team Captain and 4,000 yard gainer already here practicing and then gone after 3 seasons, graduated. We have our QB whom everyone knows will play every snap of every game, and 1 opponent at most of all the regular season games who ends the season in the top 25. We have TE left over. We have WR set. Our entire Defense could not be finer. We have a great kicker and a great punter on the way. We are told, although no one to decide whom and no one to teach them anything, that we finally will not be playing WALK-ONS ON SPECIAL TEAMS whom Mark Richt gave Scholarships to who never play Offense or Defense, none of them.
What do we need ?

You folks that say “stupid law” really have as issue living in a country with a foundation the respect of law. Seems like you would best be served in a place that told you everything to do and law wasn’t an issue. Me personally love the new law. If a person can’t show his or her legal status, they get no assistance from the state, such a s the hope grant. Even in high school they should not be living off the backs of legal citizens. But the legality of an immigrant is a none issue with you. You idiots are putting football way ahead of just plain the right thing to do.
All in the name of football? Unreal.

Dawg48,
“But damn it pay TAXES on you income as I do! ”
They do pay their taxes. Anybody has to pay taxes whenever you shop in any store.
I agree some of them may not pay their income taxes, but that’s a chicken and egg thing, because they are illegal they cannot or the employer cannot or they both are in trouble.
Another thing, most illegal immigrants make so little money, I don’t even want to get into their pockets to cut $7-10/hr wages. They can barely feed their families.

Chester, if you are reading these comments on this blog and others dealing with UGA athletics, if somehow your situation is worked out and you are able to attend UGA, PLEASE SERIOUSLY CONSIDER NOT GOING TO UGA if you are fortunate enough to have other options.I cant speak for other team’s sports blogs because I dont read them, but a great number of UGA blogs get out of hand, and this one here just takes the cake. So many of you are so misinformed, so many of you simply watch tv and formulate your opinions and views on what they tell you. How a football blog turns into a bashing of our President baffles me. You UGA fans are an embarrasment to the university. You throw athletes under the bus, kids at that, when the dont do something heroic to win you a football game, a game in which you contributed nothing too. You bash kids who choose to go elsewhere to pursue there careers. You all are flip floppers and very wishy washy. Alot of you all are worse than teenage girls obsessing over boy bands when it comes to you and high school recruiting and college football. Alot of you are grown men with grown children, and your pouring so much emotion into a game, which involves teenage boys, and you get so angry at these kids. You all make your ASSumptions bashing kids about things that you dont know about, just like you all did Chester before you knew the real reason as to why he wasnt coming. Some of you need to look up the definition of FANATIC, because thats what alot of you are. If I was any kid and there parents, and I read these UGA blogs, I would seriously consider sending my child or attending a university in a city and with a fanbase that is as deranged and awful and sad as many of you are. You all are great at building up a kid, only to tear him down when he doesnt meet you all’s expectations. I will pray for these kids, UGA, and this country, because it is taking on a tone that is scary for the future. God bless

I’ve read enough and can’t take it anymore. Its a tradegedy that this kid has found himself in this situation and it seems very unfair. But who said life is fair? We are not promissed success or opportunity through our constitution, we are promissed the pursuit. Our country is in a state of disarray and we no longer can afford to “prop up” illegals that do not play by the rules. Our schools, hospitals, etc are paid for by taxes. These taxes are paid by 40% of Americans. I understand some people’s desire to see a kid be successful, but it is not a right. The biggest disconnect, as I see it, is that some believe (as our President does) that we have to be “fair” in regards to the outcome, while others believe we should have the same opportunties from the onse with the results being up to the individual, not the government. There’s no greater story than an immigrant coming here (legally), working hard, and then assimultating into society and contributing the overall good of our country. That is what America has historically been about. However, you cannot support an idea where success is a birth right and an open door policy where anyone can come here to exploit our resources with no intention of becoming “Amercian” but would rather change the system and the ways of life that made this country what it is today.
Illegal immigrants did not build this country. Socialist did not build this country. Legal immigrants and capatalist did.
