ATHENS – Georgia starting cornerback Sanders Commings was arrested overnight by University of Georgia police and booked on charges of domestic violence/simple battery, UGA police confirmed Saturday.

Commings
Commings, 21, was booked into Athens-Clarke County Jail at 9:06 a.m. Saturday. He remains in police custody and no bond has been posted.
“I’m aware of the situation and in the process of gathering necessary information,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement released through UGA. “However, any time a student-athlete is arrested it is a matter of serious concern.”
UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said his officers were flagged down a little after 1 a.m. Saturday by persons in a vehicle in downtown Athens. At that time the female victim and four witnesses were interviewed by police. Commings had left the scene.
“Talking with [witnesses] there was some kind of interaction between [Commings] and a woman and they intervened,” Williamson said. “At some point in time he struck her. Based on the witness statements and interviews with the involved parties, that’s why he was arrested.”
Williamson said officers then obtained a warrant from a magistrate judge. Commings was taken into custody later at his apartment.
Williamson said Commings and the woman are in a relationship based on the charges.
“With us going with domestic violence, it has to be a significant other,” he said. “They’re cohabitating in some way.”
Police said the incident report will not be available until Monday morning.
Commings, a rising senior from Augusta, is one of 10 starters slated to return on defense for the Bulldogs next season. He started all 14 games this past season and was tied for fourth on the team with 55 tackles. He also led the team in pass break-ups with 12 and had one interception. He has played in all but one game the past three seasons.
Commings was released on $1,000 bond at 4:49 p.m. on Saturday.

Things change—years ago–all players lived in football dorm…now they live off campus and so forth…Just brings about problems. Some are not smart enough to realize that they are high profile and behavior problems will be magnified. Some do not know how to manage anger….
CMR needs to make him run and run and run and take an anger management course…And see counselor mentor weekly to talk about handling anger….needs to be weekly mentoring on anger mgt because you don’t solve this problem over night.
We gotta recruit better…coming down to the wire and we don’t have enough players,,,,Lets get the offer out to some 3 star players if needed but sign some more guys to play DB…cause you never know who is going to make a mistake and get in trouble with the law–and we gotta have depth. Let’s sign some guys who will work extremely hard and behave.

Tired of this never ending cycle of idiot fans that want to fire Richt for everything the players that is wrong.Don’t get me wrong, this was a horrible situation but what do these fans expect? 24/7 monitoring of all players. We could have it like Alabamer where the players are not arrested but taken to Saban(or so I have heard? How could he have predicted 4 yrs ago that this would happen? Get real people, This kind of horrible stuff happens on a daily basis all over the country. Don’t blame Richt.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Let’s hear ALL the facts first. There is plenty of violent women out there too. My guess (like in most of these cases) the woman is going to want to drop the charges or is just as guilty in the matter as he is . She will also refuse to testify against him after she cools off.

From what I know about Commings he was never that kind of person. Don’t know all that happened and why but out of character for that young man. I hate it for all parties involved. Cant blame Richt for someone elses decision. Especially because that was not typical of Commings. If coaches could see these things it’s unlikely most would select individuals. Never that easy to forsee down the road. He wasn’t that type of kid.

I am certainly no dawg fan, but I would wait until all the facts are known before you start casting stones. I don’t agree with a man ever hit a woman. However, I personally witnessed an incident in the parking lot a few months ago. In this, the woman was the aggressor. She kept screaming at the man and she was the one that was slapping him, punching him in the chest etc. All he did was yell back and he shoved her off of him once. With that the man was arrested, but not the woman!

Right. I’ve seen it a hundred times. The witnesses probably saw the tail end of what happened and the woman was mad so she is going to cast ALL the blame on him. All you so called dawgs fans that turn on coaches and players that have a bad game or bc a player does something stupid off the field are not true fans and probably never played sports. i get so tired of the uga fans that get on here and complain about A. Murray cause he made some bad plays but is only a sophomore and is on pace to bread every Georgia record there is but he is not good enough for yall. Commings does something very stupid off the field and it is our coaches fault and he should be fired. That makes no freaking sense. Players are gonna get in trouble. The coaches can only due so much. This kid has never been in trouble how was our head coach suppose to know he would do this. It just really makes me mad that some people on here have no clue about football. So our QB has a bad half against MSU he should be benched and Hutson Mason a guy who has only played a few snaps and was only offered a scholarship by us should start over Murray who is going to break every uga record and alot of SEC records should be benched. Did yall play sports sometimes you just get beat i dont care who you are. Not all of that is Murray’s fault why could our defense not have his back when he threw the one pick and why did our off. coordinator lock up and get conservative. Step back and look at everything before you want to just throw coaches and players under the bus. What Commings did is sick and stupid a man should never hit a woman but coach Ritch is not at fault.

You’re probably right. He’ll miss the Buffalo game. As far as I know he has never gotten into any trouble the whole time he has been there so he will get some counseling (which I think he should). A coach can’t control a player 24/7. Look at what happened at Auburn with the home invasion thing right after last year’s NC game and the Bama player getting arrested for drug possession less than a week after he dropped out of school to enter the NFL draft. A coach can only do so much given the family situations some of these kids come out of. It’s foolish to blame Coach RIcht.

It’s really great when people quote Scripture and have NO IDEA what it really means. “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” DOESN’T MEAN NOT not to do anything about crime/sin/wrongdoing. In John 8, where Jesus said this, the Pharisees and scribes brought a woman to Jesus who had been caught in adultery. The law said that adulterers must be stoned – BOTH PARTIES – MAN AND WOMAN. They didn’t bring the man. They weren’t obeying the law, just trying to trap Jesus. I suppose people who think Jesus HATES it when we call sin sin and carry out necessary punishment for crimes ALSO BELIEVE He tells us NOT TO JUDGE, based on their false interpretation of Matthew 7. (He meant, don’t be JUDGMENTAL, not, “DON’T MAKE JUDGMENTS OF RIGHT AND WRONG.” If you read farther in chapter 7, you see that he made ALL KINDS OF JUDGMENTS just a few sentences after 7:1.)

You UGA fans that want our head coach fired remember the grass is not always greener. All these head coaches preach to their players till they are blue in the face about thinking about what they say and write on the internet and about how they conduct themselves in public and not drinking and driving and everything but boys will be boys. You can only do so much. These coaches are under a ton of pressure if you think these players are not schooled on how to act off the field you are a idiot. They hold classes on everything for these players about life and being a role model. They screen all these players. You can only do and say so much and you have to let the kid grow up on his own. If you have ever coached at any level or taught then you know how hard it is to get through to young people. All the haters will never be satisfied and never understand cause you probably never played sports and have never been a leader of young people. Trust me no one is as disappointed in this kid as the coaches are. It is like the bama player that just got in trouble in florida for pot right before the draft. Bama does not want coach saban fired but we should fire ours. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes before you judge. I know coach will properly punish commings once all the facts come in and he might even get kicked off the team which will really hurt us but you have to learn from your mistakes and you should never hit a woman. Commings is a great nfl prospect too bc he can play linebacker, corner, and safety a very valuable player why would you be so stupid i bet alcohol played a major factor in these events
