Once again, Georgia expected to be well represented in NFL draft

Seven Georgia football players have received invitations participate in the 2012 NFL Combine. That number is expected to rise to eight if tight end Orson Charles sticks with his plan to enter the draft early. Underclassmen have until Wednesday to pull out (and Charles is not expected to).

From everything I can tell, that’s a pretty high number. Alabama had five last year and I would suspect it will have a lot more than that this year, though I couldn’t find an official list. I’m sure LSU will send a bunch to the NFL’s testing grounds as well.

Georgia, meanwhile, did release an official list on Monday and it included pretty much all the names one might expect. Listed alphabetically, they were: offensive lineman Justin Anderson, defensive back/kick returner Brandon Boykin, punter Drew Butler, offensive lineman Cordy Glenn, center Ben Jones, defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson and place-kicker Blair Walsh. Really the only seniors of note left off the invite list would be fullback/tight end Bruce Figgins and tight end Aron White. Otherwise every front-line senior was represented.

Most projections I’ve seen have Glenn, the 6-foot-5, 348-pound tackle from Riverdale, being the first Bulldog off the board. I’ve seen him listed anywhere between 23 and 31, which is first round, of course. ESPN’s Mel Kiper has Glenn rated No. 12 on his Big Board. The most comprehensive prospect ranking iI found was this one from CBSSports.com. According to those ratings, Charles is the next highest ranked at 54, followed by Jones (64) and Boykin (72). So those guys all have second-round potential, according to the experts.

However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Boykin creeps up there a little higher and might even be the second Bulldog gone. The senior from Fayetteville, who was recently named the winner of the Paul Hornung Award, could be extremely valuable as both a corner and a kick returner. And everything I know about that guy makes me believe he’ll train and prepare in such a way that he could really wow some folks in Indianapolis.

Of course, Georgia has always sent a ton of players on to the NFL. According to UGA, 77 players have been drafted in the last 15 years, including No. 1 pick Matthew Stafford in 2009 and first rounders Knowshon Moreno (2009) and A.J. Green (2011). Overall, the Bulldogs have been among the top 10 college teams annually for placing players on NFL rosters over the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, we’ll be able to see a bunch of these guys in action one more time in the next couple of weeks. Walsh, Tyson and Figgins will participate in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla. (4 p.m., NFL Network). Boykin, Butler, Jones and Glenn of Riverdale will play in the prestigious Senior Bowl game in Mobile, Ala., Saturday, Jan. 28.

The 2012 NFL Combine will be held Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis.

I understand some of these guys. Glenn especially. But Boykin? He is an undersized below average corner who really isn’t that great at returning kicks. With the new NFL kickoff rules, I would doubt a kick returner is a highly desired skill anyways.

I think Brandon Bogotay has better NFL prospects than Walsh. He should’ve been the kicker for at least the last seven games.

Boykin is really good. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him snapped up in the second round, sooner than later.

We’ll take GTBob out and cut his nuts off if you’ll take WnE/dawgfan out and do the same. Assuming they have some to cut off!

Congrats to NFL caliber Georgia players, and good luck.

One Scout’s take on Boykin:

Ultimately, in the right scheme, Boykin is a pro bowler. He is truly unbeatable in loose man coverage, but unless he goes to a team that will use his limited skill set, his talent will be a waste (well, he’ll still return kicks). If a coach is willing to use him exclusively in loose man coverage, he’ll be a great player. I’m not huge on him, because I still love corners with size, but he can still be a good player (who is destined to play for the Falcons).
NFL Comparison: Pacman Jones without character issues.
Grade: 81 (deserves to be a late second round pick)

tide (t)roll will be very disappointed to learn that the 3 graduating seniors on the OL will be invited to the Combine, especially Ben Jones. Very inconvenient for his on-going nonesensical arguments.

What skill does he possess that is at an NFL level? Can you really imagine Boykin trying to cover Calvin Johnson or Andre Johnson?

@GTBob — Yeah, Boykin sucks as a return man, he only returned 5 for TDs in his career (1 punt & 4 KOs) and +2,600 yds of returns. You sir, are a complete moron and you seem dead set on proving it every day.

I did. College players who do a lot of small things well do not translate to the NFL well. You have to be great at something and he isn’t. Plus he doesn’t have the size cover NFL receivers.

GTBob, UGA had NO PROBLEMS covering Calvin when he was at Tech. Only reason he has any press now is the GA QB tossing to him. You kill me…guess “Drop the ball” Hill is going 1st 5 rounds…NOT !

I don’t know why these clowns come on here talking like they know football. Answer to your dumb a$$ question is that he will most likely be used to cover slot receivers at the NFL level because he is virtually unbeatable in loose man coverage. His fastest 40 time is 4.35, he’s a consistent 4.4. He will play CB in the NFL.

boykin is just as athletic as grimes! Grimes covers those guys. Even if he isn’t a number one corner he will be a good number 2 and a great nickel corner. And he is a great kick returner he returned like 4 kicks and 2 punts in his career for tds. We just couldnt block for him this year. Whoever picks him will get a hard worker and a great talent

@GTBob — Yeah, Boykin sucks as a return man, he only returned 5 for TDs in his career (1 punt & 4 KOs) and +2,600 yds of returns.

He was ranked 87th in the country in return average this year. I’m really impressed. With most of the kickoffs in the NFL going through the end zone now, it’s hard to imagine a team really caring too much about the 87th best kick returner in the country.

okay… and did Ronde Barber out of Virginia at a generous 5′10″ have the size to play in the NFL? With 40+ sacks AND INTs, I would say so.

Brandon Boykin is 5′10″ While this is not considered tall, there are 4 NFL cornerbacks that are 5″8″ and a couple more that are 5′9″. He’s an exciting player with alot of class.

With so much talent obviously on the team, why aren’t all eyes on Mark Richt with probing questions about why the teams he coaches are such perennial underachievers. I recall Steve Spurrier onc remarked when reminded how many 4- and5-star recruits go to UGA, well, what happens to them after they get to Athens?
You may not like it but it’s true and is why we will continue the downward spiral as long as he and Bobo are in charge…

Most good receivers in the NFL are big receivers. You should watch the NFL every once in a while. If he wants to only cover slot receivers, good luck to him with a career like that.

@GTBob — “I’m really impressed.” Guess what douche, you don’t get a vote on draft day and no one is calling looking for your opinion on the draft. People are laughing at you, not with you. Even the Tech folks are embarassed by you, but given your lack of shame or good sense you seem content to go on embarassing the school you profess to follow.

Just to clarify, I know very, very little about football. I’m just writing this stuff because I crave negative attention. Basically, mommy never hugged me enough. Sure, every evaluator thinks Boykin is an NFL talent, but I am not commenting based on what I actually believe. I am just a sad, sad excuse for a person.

It felt nice getting that off my chest.
