ATHENS — At one point, Georgia football coach Mark Richt conceded Friday, he feared losing as many as a half-dozen underclassmen to this year’s NFL draft.
“It’s kind of scary to think you might lose two, three, four, five, six great players,” Richt said. “If you looked at the worst-case scenario for who might leave, there was certainly going to be a youth movement around here.”
As it turned out, though, all of Georgia’s draft-eligible juniors except tight end Orson Charles decided to return for their senior seasons.
Among those who seriously considered entering the draft but decided to stay in school: outside linebacker Cornelius Washington, defensive end Abry Jones and defensive backs Bacarri Rambo, Sanders Commings, Shawn Williams and Branden Smith.
“We had options, and we chose to stay,” Washington said. “That just shows everybody we really want to do something big next season.”
Charles announced his departure several days ago, and Georgia so welcomed the other players’ decisions to stay that it held a news conference Friday to spread the word.
Friday also brought word that sophomore backup quarterback Hutson Mason, who had been considering transferring, has decided to remain at UGA, where the plan will be to redshirt him next season to ensure that his eligibility extends beyond starting quarterback Aaron Murray’s.
Without the redshirt, Mason’s eligibility would expire after the 2013 season, the same as Murray’s. But with the redshirt, Mason is ensured of having at least one season after Murray vacates the quarterback position -– or two seasons if Murray decides to leave for the NFL a year from now.
“Coach Richt and Coach [Mike] Bobo offering me a redshirt was a huge pivotal point and my deciding factor,” Mason said. “I was almost 100 percent leaving until I went and talked to them and they said they were interested in me redshirting.”
Mason and Richt acknowledged the possibility that the redshirt plan could be scratched if Murray gets injured, particularly early in the season. But otherwise, the plan will be to go into the season with Christian LeMay as Murray’s backup. LeMay was redshirted as a freshman last season.
Mason said that if he had left, he would have sought to transfer to another FBS school, meaning he would have had to sit out next season. So it made sense to him to take the redshirt at Georgia rather than elsewhere.
“My heart’s here,” said Mason, who is from Marietta. “I want to win a championship here.”
“He’s outstanding in our system, and it fits him extremely well in my opinion,” Richt said. “I think he made a great decision.”
Murray was noncommittal on whether next season will be his last in college before entering the NFL draft.
“I can’t predict what’s going to happen,” Murray said. “We’ll see how next season goes.”
Georgia’s prospects for the season were bolstered by the unanimous decisions of the defense’s draft-eligible underclassmen to forgo the draft. Several said they were advised by the NFL’s underclassmen advisory committee that they could have been selected as high as the third round.
Richt said the Bulldogs had more players than usual consider the draft, “and for good reason because they’re going to end up in the NFL one day.”
Outside linebacker Jarvis Jones made it clear all season that he would be back, and Rambo announced his return several days ago. Rambo told Richt at one point that he would enter the draft, but subsequently changed his mind. Jones and Rambo were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press.
Several other defensive players had not revealed their stay-or-go choices until Friday, and some said the decision was agonizing.
“I was still undecided until today,” Smith said. “I felt like I was back in high school being recruited again, just trying to make a decision. I know I made the right decision, sticking with the team one more year.”
“Just the thought of [the NFL], you might get excited about it,” Abry Jones said. “But I thought about the year we could have, and I thought, ‘Might as well give it one more shot and have some more fun in college.’”

@GTBob,
I may be in the minority but I enjoy reading your post. While they can be classified as worthless drivel for some, I see an underlining sense of humor. I’m not sure whats funnier, your post or the responses. I think some people take your post personal, but I can see through that. People on this blog need to relax.

What is this talk about Murray leaving after next season for the NFL????? I am really amazed at how so many people lack football knowledge….I’m wondering what the coaches and fans have been seeing on the field from Murray the last couple of years!!! This kid is no elite college QB let alone an NFL QB!!! Let me dissect him right quick….lack of arm strength, short, too erratic with throws, does not perform will in clutch situations in big games!!!! Murray is not an NFL QB and UGA won’t win big with him ….people need to just quit lying about this kid an open their eyes!!!!

Great running back class. I just hope Richt realizes that it also takes a physical offensive line to have a running game. On a brighter note, IC can start cleaning off a spot on the bench now.

for those still complaining about coaching, murry, being tired etc…concerning the MSU game, get over it!
we missed two field goals, had another one blocked, had turnovers and give some credit to MSU….a very solid team that made every play necessary to win the game and had a great defense…georgia offense did enough to win, the coachs did the right thing to make MSU burn all their timeouts and left it up to our strong D to win it….i say give credit to MSU, leave it behind and learn from it.
so looking forward to 2012, 2011 sure beat the hell out of 2010 and have something to prove and plenty in the tank. with more to come in recruiting….if your not pleased, your just not paying enough attention. this “Team” is special already and getting better…another year under coach T’s belt and under coach Friends belt….and a more stable running game should improve the offense….if you’ve paid attention to recruiting this year and last, you should have much confidence in improvement on the OL with more to come. visit leather helmet blog for good insight on recruiting…kudos socrates, ecdawg, JHD and many others…it’s a 12 month job that they’re handling well.aimvho
GO DAWGS! my personal favs left on the recruiting board… young, darby and patterson….and more. this class will be just as good as last year, don’t forget the redshirts folks…last but not least, there are some truly great freshman athletes that played sparingly…to many to name here..

This is great news. Aaron Murray is one tough hombre, but he’s not a great qb because he doesn’t have an exceptional arm and he is relatively short which makes it difficult for him to see the field. In the merciless reality that is FBS, I think Hutson may be the better player, but I sense that the Tampa BDC has a lot of influence within the program. No links, just my opinion.

Murray is probably not tall enough to play in the NFL ( I know Brees is short, but there aren’t that many Brees’ ), but he has plenty of arm strength. He’s a very good college QB, who tends to freak a bit in big games. That is a problem that can be overcome with good coaching. I think the coaches feed into it when they freeze the offense whenever he throws a pick. Against MSU they froze the offense and then let Murray loose when the Spartans took a 1 point lead. Results? A TD drive.

Tom Brady would throw a lot of picks if he was running for his life half as much as Murray. Put Murray in for Bama and he wins the Heisman. We just need to protect him. I’ll admit the calls don’t help. We need to use some screens and rollouts, and short passes to neutralize the rush. A good running game would help, but opposing DCs stack 8 guys in the box daring UGA to beat them somewhere else. I think that is why we have so many big plays. I think that is also why opening to full throttle is often all that works.

A few comments about the UGAy-MSU game:
1. It was obvious that neither the UGAy goons or coaches were ready for the game. It was obvious that MSU was.
2. The whole team sucked.
3. How much longer will dawg fans put up with this kind of crap with Richt as coach? More importantly, how long will McGarity put up with it?
4. Some of the UGAy players, and a lot of the fans were crying after the game ended. This was a heartwarming sight for decent, intelligent people to see.
5. When the cameras zoomed in on some of the UGAy fans, it was very clear why most states have laws against incest. It was also clear why beer companies are so profitable.
6. How is Russ taking the loss? Oh, I see, he’s crapping all over everybody. Sorry about that, coach Richt. I’m sure those stains can be removed from your pants.
7. Aaron Murray demonstrated how devastating it was to lose Zach.
8. Good news for the seniors playing their last game for UGAy – you’ll never have to spend another night in the Athens jail. The lawyers and bail bondsmen of Athens salute you.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

@Mark and Buckett…There is competition at QB throughout the spring and during the season…I know this for a fact….Two reasons, a certain kin of mine is on the squad and has stated on more than one occasion that Murray is ahead of everyone else on the depth chart as far as making the reads and putting the offense in the right play along with the more polished and accurate passer at this point…Also, know TK very well along with his dad, and he more than anyone knows who the better QB is at this point…Doesn’t mean that things couldn’t change, but the argument about Murray being handed the job without any competition is completely wrong….Did Murray make some mistakes in some big games for us…yes….but anyone that has played or coached this game realizes that its a team game…Hard to pin every mistake on Murray…one missed assignment from our O-line and Murray can be forced into a bad play or if a WR runs the wrong route or doesn’t see what the defense is giving us vs what Murray sees can make it appear that it all on the QB if an interception occurs…People do realize that Qb’s throw to a spot at times and expect the receiver to be there…Its about timing…But not saying that Murray doesn’t need to do a better job in protecting the ball…I think he would agree with that…go dawgs

No.
Aaron Murray has long-since made Mark Richt wish that he would’ve kicked Aaron Murray off the team. 4th season on campus, and he is 0-9 against every team finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 and Top 25. His antics off-the-field have shown immaturity. His 21 fumbles, 22 interceptions, 56 sacks on the field have shown massive immaturity. His leadership, therefore, on and off the field has been the downfall of Mark Richt’s football teams the last 2 years with his 41 percent of his Starts as our Starting Quarterback, Lost.
He has lost those games by himself.
41 percent of Aaron Murray’s Starts Lost, unimaginable.

Really, GTBob at 4:30 p.m.???
“Why would they leave? Outside of Charles and Jarvis Jones does UGA really have any players that will be drafted high?”
Obviously, you are not educated about football matters, so let me explain:
Georgia produces a MASSIVE amount of NFL players in every draft. There are former Bulldogs all over the league at various positions, from defensive back to offensive linemen to running backs to linebackers to quarterbacks. NFL scouts know that UGA produces talented, NFL-ready players.
If you have a chance to get drafted in the third round, it’s a 50-50 shot for most guys to go or stay. You can make good money and have a very productive career in the third round, or even later rounds. Usually the elite, top-notch players are 1st and 2nd rounders, but everybody knows that if you’re a third or fourth round guy, you can still be pretty dang good and must be somewhat highly regarded… there might only be 8 or 10 guys at your position picked ahead of you (if that).
It’s long been known that some guys like Washington, Rambo, Smith, Williams, etc. have NFL-caliber talent… whether they stayed and polished their game a little bit more probably meant they could move up 10 to 15 spots in the draft, maybe even a whole other round higher if they really improve.
I think this shows a GREAT deal of maturity by these guys to realize the value in staying in school for another year, getting smarter and stronger and more experienced, and playing for another year under Mark Richt. If everyone took off early, it would either be a sign of selfishness, peer pressure, dollar signs in their eyes, or wanting to leave a sinking ship. The fact that they are staying speaks volumes about what the Georgia players think of their team and the prospects for next season.
Finally, GT Bob, before you get on a GEORGIA blog and criticize GEORGIA players, how about explaining why a Georgia Tech wide receiver, who played in a very run-centered, anti-pass, not-at-all-pro-style system, and who only caught 28 PASSES ALL YEAR, just declared for the NFL draft? Why not stay another year under the guidance of football god Paul Johnson and compete for an ACC championship? Oh, yeah… maybe because he’s NOT and they CAN’T. So until you can explain with good reasons why Stephen Hill declared early for the NFL, let’s NOT criticize some UGA players who clearly made a difficult but mature decision to stay in school for another year.
Go ‘Dogs!

Auburn and Georgia tek both ended up 8-5 while 27 teams finished with 10-Win Seasons this last 2011 season, alone. Neither finished therefore in any top 25 poll, and Georgia tek did not even get 1 single vote – not in any poll at whatsoever. Their own coach has a vote and he didn’t even vote for Georgia tek.
Our best wins over the Aaron Murray Starts and Playing Every Snap, are these 2 teams.
Georgia tek Lost 5 of their last 7 games, including losing their last 7 bowl games in a row. Georgia tek lost to a 6-6 Miami of Florida team who sucks. They topped off their season with a Loss to Unranked Utah.
Auburn Lost Five (5) Games, so while UGA ended up # 27 with 10-Win 4-Loss, Auburn ended up # 48 with 8-Win Season. That what you want to brag about in reply ? That two teams who finished # 48 in the nation in Won/Lost at 8-5 both, are the 2 best wins by this # 11 All-Time Football Program in Wins ?
I’m sorry, but that only makes my point have all the more impact, “valid point” according to Lowcountry Bulldog to say that the Best 2 Wins by Aaron Murray are over 2 teams finishing # 48 in the nation in Wins.
This by his own measure of not only having Lost 41 Percent of his Starts, but ending this “good season” with the worst record of all of the 27 teams with 10-Win Seasons, with his 4 Losses.
David Greene set the NCAA All-Time Record for 1-A Wins as a Starting Quarterback and most recently Kellen Moore set the NCAA All-Time Record for 1-Wins as a Starting Quarterback.
Aaron Murray ?
He has Lost 41 percent of his Starts, with the Heebie-Jeebies in the Big Games. Every single poster to this blog all this time last year, all Summer, all Fall and all Season Long stated how terrible Auburn and Georgia tek would be this season.
Now, that’s it over, it’s that they were ranked at Game Time – just barely both hanging by a thread with a host of Losses After our game everyone of you said they would lose, and did.
South Carolina was ranked when we played them in 2007, but ended the season 6-6 and did not even play in a Bowl Game.
Chris Low says you measure a football team by what they did over the course of the entire season. # 48 in the nation Auburn and Georgia tek are measured LOUSY. Unranked Either One in Any Poll, is how they both finished, as you said all season every post they were no good. Now, you were wrong the whole time and Aaron Murray has a Signature Win.
Why then did Aaron Murray say this ?
“I guess there really hasn’t been a marquee win,” Aaron Murray admitted.
Get Real.
The Best Wins with Aaron Murray as the Starting Quarterback for us in his Entire Career are two # 48 teams in the nation in Won/Lost.
Awesome.
Please post THAT again.

Murrays problem is that he’s too short, is he growing 2″ from now to next season? He has no intermediate passing game (10 to 15 yard passes) because it’s beyond his perifial vision. Georgia relies on RB’s to engineer a drive, which is why teams put up to 8 men in the box and force Murray to perform….play the law of average and make UGA engineer a “perfect” drive, the chances Murray will turn the ball over is greatly increased the more he is forced to perform outside his limited abilities.
No RB will be successful at UGA until Murray is respected for his abilities, everyone will crowd the line and fans will verbally bash the RB’s for not living up to their hype. David Greene was accurate and could hurt you with his arm, the RB’s excelled in play action because of it, Shockley was dangerous with arm & legs, the RB’s had wide lanes to run through. Murray has neither of these, and he’s short, the play-action pass never works because he needs to hold the ball too long before he can see the receiver…yes he will complete the occasional long pass, but the law of average is that he will also throw at least 2 interceptions a game as well.

We have the 3rd most players from our Program in the NFL. We do this because Mark Richt is a World-Class Recruiter. The Recruits Love him, his family and friends Love him, every single college football fan Loves him, and his Players Love him. I presume, since besides Todd Grantham the rest of his “coaching staff” are all nobodies, that his Coaching Staff Loves him. Todd Grantham gets paid as much to be our only Marquee Coach on Mark Richt’s staff as he would make in the NFL. The only position he could take to make more would be Head Coach at College or Pros.
We have 2 NFL College Football Hall of Fame who both are in the Pro Hall of Fame, Charley Trippi and Fran Tarkenton. We have 2 more currently in the NFL who are shoe-ins to join them in Both : Hines Ward and Champ Bailey.

And Aaron Murray, when he does not have the Heebie-Jeebies, over-throws his receivers, throws behind his receivers, fails to go through his progressions ever, has sorry footwork, has happy feet on every play against every top team always, throws his wee little body to the turf at the sight of a SEC Defensive Lineman faster than his 4.7 speed in the 40-yard dash which is All Of Them, cannot see over the line, is slow, is small as demonstrated most recently by the infamous picture of him on the Internet at the end of the season with a band-aid on an appendage which to the entire world looks to be a band-aid on a arm but it’s really a band-aid on his leg for Heaven’s sake, he’s puny, he is not a leader on the field or off the field, he is a ballhog, he gets his bosses criticized for bad play calls when every other QB in the world comes to the line and checks out of plays that don’t work against the defense the QB reads and into plays the QB checks-off to because of his read of the defense to a better play call at the line of scrimmage every other QB in the world checks-off into, his passes have zero zip, with the game on the line and him the QB there is not 1 person every anywhere who has said give Aaron Murray the football so that we know he will drive us down the field for the win, states himself there has never been a marquee win yet he has been on our campus practicing with this team of his since December 2008 while today is January 2012 working on his 4th season here on our campus, he doesn’t lift weights or run but studies game film, he is extremely immature with his Tweets before games of what he is fixing to do he never does and all of his other free time doing silly unprofessional antics as well such as declaring for the NFL Draft to “see what the NFL has to say” about him while I went and got all those NFL Scout statements and put them all here for you all saying that he doesn’t have IT and is not counted upon game on the line to engineer a drive, he starts out slowly and then peters out altogether, his best and only 2 wins over any team ranked # 48 or better in his entire career are two # 48 teams at 8-5 who every poster to this blog has stated for over a year daily were no bloody good this season that neither would be and neither ended up so (Prefer I curse, do you? I can say that, sorry you cannot figure it out.), to punctuate his immaturity he states now that the season is over that the whole entire team is Excited when the reply to that by Brandon Boykin the next day is that His Offense Settles for allowing the rest of the team to Bail him out on Offense, and if there is an excuse anyone can offer up for his 21 fumbles 22 interceptions 56 sacks 41% of his Starts Lost, Ben Dukes former Georgia Bulldog Stand-out Football Player who has had his own blog since said today on his blog that : “And Aaron Murray, well….we lost 4 games. In three of them, he had a pick-six and a crucial fumble. Yeah, he throws a bunch of touchdowns against not-so-excellent teams. But, he’s really going to need to mature in his decision making over this off-season if he hopes to lead us back to Atlanta and beyond. And sorry, you can’t argue on that. There is one thing he isn’t – Clutch.”

Friday also brought word that sophomore backup quarterback Hutson Mason, who had been considering transferring, has decided to remain at UGA, where the plan will be to redshirt him next season to ensure that his eligibility extends beyond starting quarterback Aaron Murray’s.

All this means is what I’ve said about Richt is true that he cannot and will not change. He is stuck on playing favorites. Murray is Richt’s starting QB for as long as he has eligibility. Mason has been shelved a year because LeMay is better suited to be the backup now. Richt has ran a Jedi-Mind trick on Mason because this dumb plan won’t work unless Murray gets hurt or leaves early. Honestly, let’s hope Murray leaves early like a fool because he really is not what the pros want because he’s too short. Anyway by that time LeMay will be rising to be a starter at QB, just to sit the bench to watch Mason be given the job for waiting out Murray. In other words there will be no competition for the starting QB position at UGA. Richt will continue to tell his puppet Bobo who is entitled to the starting QB job. There is NO WAY in the world we will ever see a national title at UGA while Richt continues to play games and give the positions to his favorites ! It doesn’t matter if UGA finds the second coming of Herschel, as long as Richt is around he will find ways to waste talent and keep the Dawgs locked up in mediocrity. Richt has made Murray a lifetime starter just to build his stats and pro dreams and not to make UGA a serious BCS contender by opening up a three way QB competition. Get ready for more mediocre 8 or 9 win seasons y’all.

Excuse me jp, sir.
Were you able to for one-time in your miserable stinking holier than thou life, able to post a single post ever to this forum without cursing, you might grow up to a man who is able to make your bloody points that you think Mark Richt is Doing Absolutely Fabulously having Lost every game against teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 since Seven (7) Seasons ago when Matthew Stafford beat # 9 Auburn in 2006, and your second only point you have ever made on this blog ever that Aaron Murray is Doing Absolutely Fabulously as Well having Lost Every Single Game vs Every Single Solitary Team finishing in Any Top 25 Poll Ever with our Last Win Therefore of such a team finishing in the Top 25 of Any Poll our Win over Georgia tek # 13 in 2009 – before Mr. Hold the Ball Too Long Aaron Murray took over as the DownFall of Mark Richt who is one of the men in this world I like the most and respect the most he at my alma mater you obviously never stepped foot in a classroom of – now, we welcome to call me and Ben Dukes names ( I speak for myself on that one but having had conversations with The Man Ben Dukes and having watched him with much glee and joy as a Player here, to know that he is A Man and one Not Afraid of a Difference of Opinion as Neither am I – only You. ), but when you can answer the question about comparing David Greene (whose name even you cannot come close yet in 15 posts by you about him not one of which have you yet to even spell his name correctly) with Aaron Murray or Matthew Stafford even with Aaron Murray or DJ Shockley compared to Aaron Murray, I offer up sir :
David Greene beat the vols who finished # 4 in 2001.
DJ Shockley beat LSU who finished # 6 in 2005.
Matthew Stafford beat Auburn who finished # 9 in 2006.

Thanks for coming back defense! We are all so glad you did! 2012 looks so much better with you all coming back! It would have been rough going with you, especially early! WOW. What could be a great season would have been hard-pressed to just be a good one without you guys! Go Dawgs.
The sky is the limit in 2012!

I don’t understand why everyone is so hard on Murray. He’s going to end up with every major passing record Georgia has, and he’s done it with little run support and – at times – predictable playcalling and a play-action-oriented offense that isn’t fooling anyone. Oh yeah, and his O-line has been somewhere between awful and average. His TD-INT ratio is better than Stafford’s ever was, and he’s only a Sophomore. Good grief, man, he’s the best QB in the conference, according to most impartial observers. Show some support for the guy!

The plan for Mason sounds pretty good on the surface, but what if LeMay steps it up this fall and is ready to go if needed. Do you suddenly take Mason off of the red shirt and play him, when your back up is better over all? It is pretty hard to imagine how this is going to work out and benefit all of the QB’s involved. If I were LeMay, I might now be thinking of transferring, because it looks like there is a script in place already, set in hard stone, so no matter how good LeMay plays, he will not be in a competitive position for at least two more years. They can’t use a red shirt anymore on LeMay anymore unless it is a medical red shirt, so that means, LeMay doesn’t see much of a chance of seeing any action on the field, until he is a junior. If it were a case where Murray was clearly superior to Mason and LeMay, that might work out, but I see problems ahead with this plan. What do they do, if Murray stays for the 2014 season as well? For some reason, I think all you do is push, the same problem down the road for another year or so. It would seem to me that it might be better to use dual QB’s and if one clearly is superior to the other, after a few games, the choice would be simple. If You preordain your starters for the next two years, will make it hard in my estimation, to keep LeMay happy and the future QB’s coming in as well.
For his Career : 11 losses in 27 Starts 41 % lost, holds ball too long, steals 7 carries a game from RB with 1 yard a carry average and 21 Fumbles, 22 Interceptions, 56 Sacks, never zips a pass ever, throws his body to the turf, only runs 4.7 slower than

No, he’s not.
Preordained, that’s a good word like that word.
Georgia tek’s master plan to be competitive is (1) leave The SEC so as not to share in the $20 million per school SEC Revenue Sharing (2) Blow-up half their seats at Bobby Dodd stadium they named after a college drop-out (3) In the modern era marked by passing the ball, hire a coach who doesn’t believe in the forward pass (4) sit in a city of 6 million and be unable to talk any of the prospects to come play said high school offense (5) give away 4 bags of roasted peanuts, 4 hot dogs, 2 coco-cola, and moonpie with free parking pass to anyone who buys tickets to a home game (6) only have UGA fans buy their season tickets in years when the game is there, who then throw away every game except one (7) brag about never being on NCAA Probation Ever and then find itself 3 times on NCAA Probation including currently Twice on NCAA Probation in Football back-to-back Repeat Offenders (8) Brag about going to the 3rd Most Bowl Games in a row, then Lose Every Bowl Game 7 seasons in a row (9) Brag about going to a Major Bowl, only to lose it too and remain since 1955 since Georgia tek has Won a Major Bowl (10) brag they have 6 NC in football and all 6 with the same exact polls who has awarded UGA with 6 (11) Never win an AP Poll National Championship Ever (12) brag about hey we’re # 36 national university in the nation and whine when you reply to them that no one brags about being # 36 at nothing (13) play dungeons and dragons and watch star trek while not allowing any post to get past the filters on the Georgia tek blog with the word Nerd in it (14) talk about their academics every time football is brought up between UGA and Georgia tek when none of Georgia tek’s students even know UGA also has Engineering Degrees, nor does anyone know that Georgia tek has no Engineering Degrees for any of their “student-athletes” none of which ever graduate (15) have the Georgia tek football fans (both of them) spend their every day all day in the UGA blog trying to talk about Georgia tek and making statements such as if Paul Johnson had Mark Richt’s players can you imagine how great he’d be when the fact of the matter is, is that that is the very problem he faces that he has no talent, never has and never will. And, they call themselves smart.
