Orson Charles, Georgia’s All-SEC tight end, will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft.
Charles revealed the unsurprising decision Wednesday, saying “it’s time to open a new chapter in my life.”
A few hours later, another UGA underclassman who had been seriously considering the draft — safety Bacarri Rambo — made the opposite decision, announcing through the school that he will return for his senior season.
Charles said he consulted with several NFL players and a former NFL coach, Tony Dungy, about his stay-or-go choice. The NFL’s underclassmen advisory committee told Charles that he could be drafted as high as the second round.
The decision wasn’t stressful, Charles said, because “either way I wouldn’t be wrong.” He added: “As I continued to pray about it, I just felt ready.”
The deadline to declare for the draft is Sunday. Charles and Rambo appeared to have the highest draft stock among Georgia players considering early entry, although several others also have said they are weighing decisions.
Rambo’s return is a boon for the Georgia defense. He led the SEC with eight interceptions this past season and was named an Associated Press first-team All-American.
Charles’ departure, combined with the expiration of senior Aron White’s eligibility, means Georgia will head toward the 2012 season without its top two tight ends from last season.
The Bulldogs’ top returners at the position will be junior Arthur Lynch, who has two career catches, and Jay Rome, a highly touted recruit who was redshirted as a freshman last season. Also, Colquitt County tight end Ty Smith has committed to sign with the Bulldogs next month.
“They have a lot of people who can fill the hole at tight end,” Charles said.
Charles was one of two prized recruits, along with quarterback Aaron Murray, who signed with Georgia out of Tampa’s Plant High in 2009. Murray, who unlike Charles was redshirted in his first season at UGA, has two years of eligibility remaining and wished his long-time teammate well.
“The No. 1 thing he said was, ‘Just don’t forget about me,’” Charles said.
“To play [in college] with my high school quarterback was definitely a blessing,” Charles added.
Charles started 29 games for Georgia. He caught 94 passes for 1,370 yards, which set a UGA career yardage record for tight ends, and 10 touchdowns, which tied the school record for the position.
After catching 45 passes for 574 yards and five touchdowns in the 2011 season, he was voted first-team All-SEC by both the coaches and the media. He was chosen first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association.
In what proved to be his final college game –-a triple-overtime loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl –- Charles had one catch for two yards. He said that game did not affect his decision to depart.
“I met the majority of all my goals I came here with,” Charles said Wednesday. “I feel like I’ve grown spiritually. . . . I feel like I’ve grown as a player.
“I was going back and remembering some of the goals I came in [with], and today I was checking them all off, like, ‘Yeah, I accomplished this.’ The past three years have just been a blessing. They’ve been awesome.”
The 6-foot-3, 241-pound Charles is ranked as the third best tight end in this year’s draft by nfldraftscout.com, behind Clemson’s Dwayne Allen and Stanford’s Coby Fleener.

I think it is a bad thing when your TE has 3x more holding calls then TD’s. He is going to have to block in the NFL and he is not very good at it. He was given bad advice by Dungy. Should have stayed and worked on the blocking. Just saying!

OC is another in a long line of underutilized talents in Athens over the past 5 seasons or so. He’ll be a stud in the NFL – this is clearly the right move for him. How many times did we throw to him in the Outback Bowl? Once? Never?
Good luck Orson. Thanks for your time in Athens – shame we didn’t get to see your full potential thanks to a couple of offensive coaches who are clearly too overwhelmed sometimes to work your talents into the gameplan.

Orson will be good in the NFL. Yes, I think we didn’t use him enough especially in the bowl game, but Fridawg has a point, our offense was always in need of help with blocking, so he definitely showed off his skills in other than receptions. Unfortunately – we won’t miss him as much as we should have since we never used him like we should have. One shovel pass in the Outback for 2 yards is embarrassing. Why would he want to come back to effectively be the third tackle for a running game that didn’t exist? Hell’s bells – the MSU tight end had over 100 yards and nobody even knew who he was.
Charles is a DGD and I expect him to be an exceptional pro. Now – Let’s not waste Rome’s talent like we wasted Orson’s. Good decision Orson and Godspeed.

To Bdaamwag, I have heard those rumors circulating around as well, but it may be just a ploy to give Grantham more money. Besides, Grantham runs a 3-4, whereas, Coach Smith prefers the 4-3, not an easy transition with the personnel we have, but we’ll see. The NFL demand’s that their Tight End’s be able to block. That make Charles invaluable. Georgia didn’t have good depth on the offensive line and Charles was used frequently as a blocker to keep our opponent’s Defensive end in check and when we didn’t need him to block was a very good TE.
Unlike a lot of our opponent’s CMR has always encouraged player’s to leave early if they were ready. The one thing I like the most about CMR is he put’s the player’s interest first and let’s them make the decision without pressure whether to leave early. Charles will go in the first round or the first half of the second round.

Orson was under utilized at UGA. He should have had 70 rec 900 yds and 8 tds ..at least. With Tony Gonzalez* gone into retirement most likely.. Orson would be a nice fit in a Falcons uni. He is gonna be a late first rounder to second rounder most likely, and if his stock falls..will go no farther than the first round. Typically TE’s dont get drafted til the mid to late twenties ( in the draft) few years ago Pettigrew to Detriot. Step up Jay Rome! reebok, it’s not Bobo’s offense, it’s Richt’s offense. Why are people so blind to the fact that Bobo was just a lowly assistant when he started under Richt. Richt trained Bobo so his style is Richt’s style! At crucial points in big games Richt has the head set on and hears what bobo’s calling and so forth. If Richt wanted Bobo to change he would push him to do so! Why do you think Richt defends Bobo with such ferocity? Because from a personal standpoint he knows that criticism of Bobo is really a knock on him. Think about that.

I wish Orson Charles the best of luck in the NFL. I don’t blame him for leaving because Bobo didn’t utilize him properly. Case in point is the game against Michigan State. Bobo was so outcoached that Orson became an extra blocker almost the entire game and only caught one pass for 4 yards. If Bobo stays, Orson made the right decision. In spite of Bobo, I still think Orson isn’t NFL ready because he’s a “tweener” tight end. He’s too small to block in the NFL and too slow to be a split out as a wide receiver. He needs another year to increase his strength and size to take on blitzing linebackers.

Orson was underutilized. Find a way to get him the ball. Bring Lynch into block, play all 3 at once (Stanford). Give him the ball in the bowl game and maybe he stays to chase 1,000 in one season. His sophmore year he was grossly underutilized. Our offense is so predictable especially when running. Why run right at Mich State’s defensive tackle who will be drafted early? Move Ball back to Rb coach, I like the way Thomas brown ran the ball with authority.

There’s nothing in the Jacksonville Journal about Grantham being interviewed, but these things are usually kept quiet. I tend to think he’ll be in Athens. Who’s gonna pay him more than $750,000 a year?
Murray?

Murray needs to be pushed and have the threat off losing playing time if he doesnt protect the ball. Orson Charles was the #1 ranked TE in his class and Arthur Lynch was the #2 ranked TE. Rome was the #1 TE in his class. Arthur Lynch played a good bit this year – mostly blocking. He is a good receiver and a big target. Rome will back him up and there also a TE in this recruiting class who will probably be redshirted.

I think Murray needs competition at QB. Mason may be transferring so it’s down to LeMay and Bauta. I personally want to see what Bauta is about. Heard he’s “Tim Tebow Jr.”…he said that he “wants to be better than Tebow.” and that he has the “same willingness to win.” and a “better arm.” Hell let’s see what he can do. Murray just turns the ball over too much in big time games. In big time games, you need a big time QB, and we don’t have that.

Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons have contacted Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham to potentially fill their open defensive coordinator position.
Sources tell me the Falcons have reached out to the agent of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. bit.ly/sbcB2K
— Pete Roussel (@coachingsearch) January 11, 2012
If the report is true, Grantham’s agent, Michael Harris, couldn’t be happier – Georgia is in the midst of negotiating a new contract for Grantham, and the interest from the Falcons would only drive Grantham’s price even higher. Since arriving in Athens, the longtime NFL coordinator has turned the Bulldogs into a monster on defense: UGA ranked 3rd nationally in total defense this season (seventh in pass defense and ninth in rush defense). They also finished second in the SEC in sacks (34), tackles for loss (94) and turnovers forced (29).
Before joining the Bulldogs, Grantham worked for four NFL teams – Indianapolis, Houston, Cleveland and Dallas, the latter two as a coordinator. Grantham employs a 3-4 scheme, whereas the current Falcons have run a 4-3

CTG will not be the DC for the Falcons. That would require a complete personnel overhaul. Remember what a complete disaster that was the last time we went to a 3-4. We no longer have the immediate draft picks to make that transition, and much of the current personnel (rightfully so) would leave for other teams. We would have NO NG and NO OLB. Plus, Brent Grimes is too small to play corner in a 3-4. As hard as good corners are to come by, why take a solid 4-3 cover corner and make him irrelevent? Furthermore, Abraham is a true 4-3 DE, and an attempt to convert him to OLB would be a waste, and he would likely be a complete disaster as a 3-4 DE (too small).

Falcons should go after Sal Suneri Bama’s linebacker coach. He wants to be a DC and has professional experience. Lets Review, and this is not meant to be disrespectful to the UGA fans, just calling it like it is.
Offense, Play Calling is rountine, does not utilize the fullback, TE( Charles- a good one), lack of run offense that cause too much pressure on the quarterback to make plays.
Defense, front seven is strong, not to the level as the Alabama’s or LSU’s but close behind. Lacks depth, at times players are in the correct position which allows big plays. Grantham is getting his players better, but without sufficient deep personnel, (3 deep). When certain players go out on defense the Opposing OC recognizes it and immediately makes a call.
Special Teams, the overall program is strong, but some major holes, incorrect positioning cause major plays to go against them.
Team Attitude, it seems like the defensive players have the right attitude, and the offensive players continually look over to the sidelines to see if they can get them out of box( see Jordon Jefferson-LSU for comparison).
Team Strength- average at best, is the diet and nutrition program working?
Team Asst. Coaches- below average for a premier SEC program. Currently one coach who would fit other programs( including NFL) and be an asset.

childrojc. are you blind? UGA over-achieved in 2011. This YOUNG team will be even stronger next year and the 3 years after? WOW. They had NO running game in 2011 and STILL won 10 games. How good do you think they will be in 2012 with a GREAT running game and experience at all positions? There are a couple of questions mark positions but man, there is a lot of depth and returning starters at most positions. It could not be much better. The OL is going to be OK with no injuries. We got some great young guys and a true freshman that might be all-SEC in 2012 plus more we might get a JUCO. Lighten up and watch the drill be finished the next 5 years. SEC Championship game not good enough for you this year after 2010? You are gonna have a sad life brother….

Columbus,
I agree that 10 wins is in reach and very attainable. The issue that UGA is going to have is playing teams that will not help them if other teams go undefeated and stay undefeated until late into the season. This past year, everyone kept saying all preseason that losing the first two games would be detrimental and there was a chance UGA would fall apart, well they did not fall apart and beat a decent(not good) MSU team, a below average Florida team, and a better than usual Vanderbilt team.
One can say this, playing Missouri in Columbia, USC in Columbia and an improved Florida team is not going to be easy as some think.
But keeping up with LSU, Alabama or Arkansas is not going to as easy.
The OL is going to be the pivotal postion needed to improve drastically if UGA even wants to be considered in the big discussion.

Good news for Rambo….Hope McGarity has agreed to terms with Grantham, as the wolves are howling at the door. I said on here last week that there would be at least 6 new HC’s in the NFL looking to fill staff and at least 2-3 DC’s fired, leaving about 30-35 defensive coaching jobs open in the NFL. If you don’t Grantham’s name has not been bounced around, your naive. Hope he stays.

Reading some of the comments by some, including dawg fans makes me wonder whether you guys know anything about this game. I mean, I hear all this talk about Off. Coord.’s and talking about how O. Charles did not get used during his career at UGA..You have got to be “freaking” kidding me. Did anyone look at Bama’s high powered, innovative offense this year that got them a BCS title..Its about “Defense” in the SEC folks…Ask LSU…Everyone wants to blame Coach Bobo for our failures. Well its a team game, and when you lose or win, everyone plays a part in that…Wait I almost forgot the key ingredient…The Players…Now with that being said, would I like to see a few more innovative plays, such as screens, toss sweeps and passes to the TE’s…Yes, but when you play a great defense, they can take away alot of those from an offense…Maybe, just maybe, thats why O. Charles didn’t catch 15 balls a game…go dawgs and good luck O.Charles..Always a dawg…

We will have a stable of RB’s next year and I think the line will be more athletic than this years. I saw Theus in that All American game and he was just mauling defensive linemen. His run blocking was unbelievable. He was pushing the D-lineman down field about 10 yards on running plays.

I think what handcuffed this offense this year was not having a proven FB like in years past with Chapas and Munzenmeir. And one in the past like Southerland. If you noticed we played more of a spread this year than usual. Not much I-formation football. There is a FB named Hicks coming in that’s already 6′2, 245lbs. Hopefully we can get back to smash mouth football with the RB’s we’ll have.

For all the trolls on here spreading rumors about Grantham leaving… This is his quote from TODAY:
“This time of year there are a lot of rumors involving coaching openings,” Grantham said in a statement. “Because of the terrific recruiting class we are assembling and the juniors that have communicated to me their desire to come back to Georgia I felt it important to address some of these current and any future rumors. I’ve had discussions with Coach (Mark) Richt and (AD) Greg McGarity and we are on track to finalizing details on a contract extension. My family enjoys Athens very much. I love the passion and excitement of our fans. We have the program headed in the right direction and I want to be a part of bringing Georgia a championship. The Bottom Line about Uga; Saban had 44 days to practice for the NC. How Many days did Saban give his players off for Christmas? CMR would waste time to practice for his family. Swimming or taking extra days off before an important game is CMR’s thing. Saban sends players to the NFL. I wish Orson Charles the best. Like a bunch of immature children. Really is pretty sad. Good luck OC7 in the NFL would loved to have him one more season but you can’t blame him for going. Always a risk of getting hurt if he stayed. I think all the other juniors would be wise to come back. A couple more key commits and we will be in good shape. Looking forward to seeing Marshall and Jenkins in action the next few years. Extremely talented young men that are smart and have integrity. Getting Jenkins was a shock and I thought Bama had him locked. I see our defense top 5 for at least a couple more seasons. If we can eliminate the poorly timed turnovers and ultra conservative play calling in the 2nd half of these games could be a special season. Aaron is a great qb but has to take a little better care of the ball. Looking forward to watching how it plays out. GO DAWGS!

Good Luck OC but you would probably be better off to stay & get an education. The NFL doesn’t have much use for a 6-3 240lb tight end.Look around the NFL & all the good tight ends are all 6-6 & taller & faster then OC. He is a tweener–to small to play TE & not fast enough to play WR. OC reminds me of Mike Williams out of USC a few years ago who came out as a junior & he was a high draft pick but a total bust in the NFL.According to one article the NFL estimated OC would be a 2nd or 3rd round pick & in layman terms that means he may get drafted but they don’t know what round because they give all underclassmen at least a 3rd round pick. Good luck but we are in good hands with Jay Rome

It’s hilarious all you on here who think OC is going to be some great NFL TE. He’s undersized BIG TIME. Sure I liked him as a player, pretty good hands for a college TE, but I have seen many TE’s who could actually make moves in open field after the catch and take it to the house. Considering he couldn’t do this much, and missed blocks all the time that caused the RB to get tackled in the backfield, what exactly is UGA going to miss next year? The TE at Florida a couple years back was and is much better… Hernandez was it?

Hey DC Dawg, What about Asher Allen?I think I remember him leaving early, after playing the whole year with a broken hand.. He is a starter in the NFL, was HIGHLY recruited, yet he accomplished the same as those above, right?

You better believe we’re gonna land more top recruits this year.. Not saying more, but Jordan J. is defenitely NOT the last 5* Grantham is gonna land this year. This guy is a true Coaching BEAST. He has literally taken Slick Willie’s players (decent recruiter, had an alarmingly odd tendency to sign short corners.. BAD playcaller), save a few current players, and went from a 58th (around) ranked defense to the 5th in TWO YEARS. Scary when to think this Defensive Guru gets the top players to play in his system, along with Lakatos’ stated desire to have DB’s who are 6′0+, what kind of dominating D we will have. Hell, it may even override Bobo’s predictable calling when we have a lead. And I mean ANY lead. He has never met a lead he isn’t capable of sitting on. Hope Richt addresses this. He’s a damn good coach, helluva recruiter, but needs some tweaking in his play-calling.

“What say ye??????? UGA Bowl Game attendance. These were ranked teams that had won divisions in BCS conferences, and attendance was announced as 49.429, which would have ranked as the second-smallest gathering in the 17 years Outback Steakhouse has sponsored the game. According to the Tampa Bay Times, however, actual attendance was 40,022 — the sort of gate Georgia fans would mock if it occurred, say, in a regular-season game at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Where is the love????

Stinger,
UGA sold out it’s allotment of tickets for the Outback Bowl. You can’t fill your small stadium for regular season games, even when you play UGA in your own house. Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that you are not a very good team. By the way, the attendance for the first thirty bowl games of the season was 49,000 on average so the Out back Bowl succeeded the average bowl attendance to that point. The bowl attendance for all games was down 2.1%, and it is a reflection of the economy. The main reason the sun bowl was down 6,000 people as cited by a number of writers and the bowl president was because Georgia Tech. was participating in it. The sun bowl went from over 54,000 to a little over 48,000 this year. According to the Bowl officials of the Outback bowl, attendance was over 49,500, with the normal average per year being at a little over 51,000. Who drew the less fans, then?
If you can’t fill your own stadium and can’t go to a bowl game, and get the fans of the area to come and see you play play, it would appear to me that you are once again, spouting out you stupid comments, when in fact, they have very little merit. You might be interested in the ESPN report came out, that ranked Atlanta as the poorest city in fan support for the pros. and it evidently must have carried over to your little institute on North Ave. Don’t worry though, because next year you get to come to a big boys stadium and get your butt beat. You really need to quit grasping for straws in order to find things to rag on about the team that has owned you, throughout your institutes football legacy , if you can call it a legacy. Otherwise, it makes your school look like a real institute, albeit a mental one.

Since you are probably about 15 years old, I doubt you could get anybody to sleep with you now, much less, when you reach adult age, which in your case, will not mean, you are more mature.

Orson Charles did a great job at UGA most of the time and deserves all the acculades he gets. However, in Tampa before the bowl game, he led the team in partying. (Murray was in second place according to a teammate from Valdosta.) Those team members who really gave it their best at the game are PO-ed at Charles for his preparation and attitude before and during the game. He knew he was going “pro” and it was at his “home”. He just made a big party out of it, and according to one player, his teammates are glad to see him go.
UGA will be in “Allstate Condition” this year. (In Good Hands) with Jay Rome at TE. The guy is really good. He was a Valdosta Wildcat and I’m a Lowndes fan, but the truth is the truth.
UGA’s “me first team second” RB from Columbus better work on his attitude also. Some of the players are beginning to wish he would leave and take his NCAA record of finding ways to take himself out of games somewhere else.
I am certainly glad Rambo is coming back! Now if UGA can sign some RB’s and OL’s, and find a way to coach’em up, find a way to improve (DRASTICALLY) Special Teams play, things should continue moving in the right direction in Athens, GA! I hope our Josh Clemons decides to sigh with UGA. Trust me, Josh can play!

Congrats to the 2011 Dawgs (SEC East Champs) – Very Good Year.
Recruits / Players: Please know that the many of these Bloggers can NOT be from true UGA fans. These bloggers applaud your decision to come to UGA, but degrade and belittle a great player like O. Charles (UGA’s Record Breaking Tight End) when he decides to do what he believes is best for HIM.
Bottom Line: UGA Fans needs to support these players while they are at Georgia (win or lose) AND when they decide to leave …. just as much as you support them when they sign with UGA.
Many of the comments on the Charles are shameful and hopefully are NOT from real UGA fans.

No surprise and not the worst news for UGA. We need Rambo back and Rambo needs to come back, so that’s good.
We should be good to go at TE with Lynch and Rome. Yes, Charles was a unique talent at that position, but I don’t think we capitalized on that the way we should’ve.

We’ll miss Charles’s pass receiving abilities. He has been a good player. Sometimes a little too self promoting after catches, but overall a very positive factor. Hope he does well in NFL. Needs to improve blocking ability at next level.

Charles had a stellar career, learned how to block, catch in traffic, he`s ready to go, and should as a business decision. 1 knee shot and draft stock plummets. Rambo needs 1 more SEC year as well, smart decision to return, same for Williams, they will benefit in next draft with seasoning, improved coverage experience, and conditioning. nasty defense next year, and year after with some of the redshirts and new recruits incoming.if we can run next year, look out, and tight ends in fold now ready to rock

This is what happens when you recruit players who are looking toward the NFL. Recruit football players that want to win at UGA, not “check off” their accomplishments before they leave. I noticed in his checkoff list that SEC or National Championship must not have been on the list.

He’s only a junior but you heard it here first. Future SEC first team selection.
