Todd Grantham, who led the Bulldogs' defense to a No. 3 overall national ranking this past season, shot down rumors Wednesday he might be heading to the Falcons. (UGA photo)
It’s that time of year where rumors swirl constantly regarding coaching jobs and transfers and the like. On cue, no sooner had Brian VanGorder left the Atlanta Falcons to take the defensive coordinator’s job at Auburn this week than rumors began to circulate that the Falcons may come after Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.
Kind of funny when you think about it, especially with all the arguments that developed this season between Bulldogs’ fans about which DC was better at UGA, VanGorder or Grantham.
Anyway, those rumors must have made their way to Grantham on Wednesday because the Bulldogs’ second-year coordinator issued a statement through the UGA athletic department reiterating that he isn’t looking to leave Georgia and/or return to the NFL. Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity confirmed to the AJC last week and again Wednesday that he and Grantham have already agreed in principle to a new three-year contract. They’re in the process of finalizing the paperwork, which may drag out another week or more. But it’s effectively a done deal and Grantham’s statement underscores as much.
Here’s what Grantham sent via email:
“This time of year there are a lot of rumors involving coaching openings. Because of the terrific recruiting class we are assembling and the juniors that have communicated to me their desire to come back to Georgia I felt it important to address some of these current and any future rumors. I’ve had discussions with Coach Richt and (AD) Greg McGarity and we are on track to finalizing details on a contract extension. My family enjoys Athens very much. I love the passion and excitement of our fans. We have the program headed in the right direction and I want to be a part of bringing Georgia a championship. My desire is to be at UGA for a very long time. Go Dawgs!”

I suppose you could split hairs about the semantics and, of course, some folks already are. But that seems pretty cut-and-dried to me.
Grantham — who exited the season as the nation’s second highest-paid defensive coordinator at $750,000 a year — led the Bulldogs’ defense to a No. 5 overall national ranking this past season. He has nine of 11 starters due to come back and is making some hay on the recruiting trail. Most recently he nailed down a commitment from defensive end/outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins, the state’s No. 1 prospect.
Most of the time these rumors are generated by opposing teams just trying to blunt recruiting momentum. Just to be certain, the sooner UGA gets Grantham’s contract finalized the better. With just one year left on the current deal, Grantham’s buyout is relatively miniscule. But the one included in the first year of a new three-year agreement will have considerably more bite to it.
In any case, McGarity doesn’t seem in a rush.
“We have talked about what we are going to do, so we are all on the same page,” he said.
That’s definitely a good thing for Georgia.

Jerome, you sure are drinking the kool aid. Tide is rolling is correct. You state all we need is to give up 20-25 points and we should win all our games? The problem is at the end of the games: 35 pts to Boise, 45 to USC, 42 to LSU, or 33 to MSU, these are real scores. UGA lost to every team they played which was ranked at the end of the year.
I do like CTG and hope he stays a long time, but UGA’s problems elsewhere are too big for his defense to overcome.

What a joke. Meantime, Bama plays, Auburn, LSU, ARKY, Mizzou and T A&M. Once of the few schools to play both A&M and Mizzou to showcase to their fans what the SEC is all about.

CTG has got defense headed in right direction no doubt…but until we can play the fourth quarter like the 1st quarter we will not be great…hopefully another year of S&C, and more depth will keep us fresh for the 4th quarter…all our losses and all the points given up were 2nd half breakdowns….

Saban Never Sleeps….Mizzou, TAM are not going to make your schedule tougher….trust me…Mizzou loses 12 seniors this year and TAM have proven that they can not beat SEC schools and were a mid-tier Big-12 team….LSU is a cyclic team, dependent upon how good their in-state allotment of players are in a given year….they will not always dominate…up and down, up and down….Hopefully, CMR has learned his lesson in letting top tier in-state talent leave…looks to be latching on to some of these kids in Georgia….the problem with UGA is not Bobo, even though his playcalling is questionable at times in the game….It is the fact that Richt treats special teams as an award to walk-ons and true freshmen….yes, they gain experience…but they also make crucial errors while gaining that experience….Look at Vtech, Florida, Bama, LSU….they have their starters on Special Teams….Look at UGA….there is a reason Kosta Vavlas led special teams in tackles this year…because Alec Ogletree, Bacarri Rambo, Shawn Williams, Cornelius Washington, Jarvis Jones, etc. didn’t participate in Special Teams enough….that needs to change….has to change…special teams alone cost UGA 2 games this year….Go Dawgs!!!!!!!!!!

Jerome… dude I am a UGA fan, alum, and legacy. I’m not even going to ask if you are, and frankly don’t care either way. I don’t go to games, don’t buy season tickets, and don’t contribute to the Hartman fund. I do watch every game possible and feel that I have a pretty good idea of the difference between reality and and wishful thinking. I like no other team and don’t latch onto UA, AU, UF, or LSU winning NC’s or any other SEC bowl victories. It does nothing but show a looser’s mentality when one flatters themselves with the company they keep.
I too have drank the kool aid at times, but the reality is UGA would have been no better than 8-5 this year if they had an average strength of schedule.

It would help in the 4th quarter if Bobo and Richt would not be conservative and run some creative plays…keep some drives alive to run out the clock…so as not to put the defense in game saving positions….mentality has to change on offense, even Nick Saben put LSU away with his offense this time, long drives in the second half and to end the game, and his defense is no doubt #1!

CMR is ranked in the Top 10 best winning percentage by active coaches in the nation. No other SEC coach can make that claim. No active coach in America has a winning record against CMR and he is a great human being who will never get UGA in trouble like Miami, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, etc.
Now, when your simple mind has grasped that we can come up with some more like maybe CMR won the SEC East Championship in 2011 but maybe you are too old/young to remember that.

Just wondering why VanGorder moves around so much. He’ll do very well with the level of recruiting he’ll get at Auburn just as he did at UGA, so the war eagles are gonna be very good defensively. What’s intriguing is his resume’ the last 11 years. Athens to JAX, JAX to Statesboro, Statesboro to Columbia…no, changed my mind, ATL, ATL to Auburn. This looks more like a coach that gets fired a lot (or works under coaches that get fired a lot) rather than a coach that excels. Does he get bored with his location quickly or does he simply have loyalty issues? Makes you wonder. Don’t get used to having him around long Auburn fans. HA HA! Wouldn’t it be funny if he went to work for Petrino? LOL!

Defense is shaping up; I’d still like to see tackling improvement; and more tackles by DLs. We also need heftier middle LBs. Different approach is sorely needed for the rest of the team. OH; and the short field excuse – it’s still legal to prevent the other team from scoring; or hold them to a field goal.

Hey Tide is Rolling, Why are you on a Georgia blog? Your team is a winner but you’re acting like a loser. You can’t just look at points given up in a game and put them on the defense. Are you that unintelligent when it comes to sport? You can go back and check the BOX SCORE of any of Georgia’s losses and see who gave up the points. Usually, it was special teams or the offense, not the defense. Boise St. did score on the D, but that was Game 1. Do some homework and don’t just check the score to make your conclusions. Or better yet, stop commenting on a Georgia blog because you obviously didn’t watch any Georgia games or you’d know better. At least, a smart person would.
What we also tend to forget, is during that first game against Boise St., on I believe the first defensive possession or the second OF THE GAME, we lost our starting (star player IMO) Linebacker Alec Ogletree, and he was replaced by a former WALK-ON (DGD!!!!) Mike Gilliard, who series, and then on. And I am NOT bashing this kid at all, because the loss was a team effort, but I remember after Ogltree went down, the announcers even qouted Richt about how we couldn’t afford to lose anyone in that position BEFORE the game, then it happened. Up to that point, we had gotten three and outs on Boise, but after that, they started systematically tearing us apart with those slants to the TE. I want to say I saw at least 5 straight.. Gilliard was thrown directly into the fire, and it showed, but then for the next five weeks, he filled in ADMIRABLY. Ogltree doesn’t go down, I honestly believe would have been undefeated going into to SECCG. Believe this, next year a single injury shouldn’t hurt us so much, because with our returning starters, our redshirts from last year, and our new top recruits that Grantham is going to land (not saying more, but Jordan J. is NOT the last big recruit for our defense this year!), we will be working on our TWO DEEP D, the kind that LSU and BAMA have. We have the talent. We have the coach. Hell, we even have the schedule. NOW is time to BELIEVE
How do you Motivate our Players and Coaches ? Tell them they're great ? Or, put EXCUSES aside and tell them what they actually are so they can work on it ?

Georgia Bulldogs 2011 season in review :
# 81 Turnovers Lost, Aaron Murray really the only culprit
# 94 Being Tackled for a Loss, Aaron Murray only culprit
# 85 Our QB being sacked, Aaron Murray not OL culprit
# 61 Red Zone Offense, AM & Off Coaching Staff culprit
# 48 Pass Offense, Aaron Murray great passer, really ?
# 62 Fumbles Lost, Aaron Murray main culprit again
# 42 in 1st Downs by Offense, Aaron Murray & play calling
# 68 in Penalties for us all season long, not disciplined
# 43 in 4th Down Conversions by Offense, play calling
# 42 in 3rd Down Conversions by Offense, play calling
# 86 in nation throwing interceptions, Aaron Murray only
# 88 defend Kick-Offs don’t hurt good players, walk-ons
# 65 Kick-Offs don’t hurt good players, walk-ons again
# 79 Net Punting don’t hurt good players, walk-ons
# 116 Net Punt Return Defense, walk-ons can’t tackle
This despite the facts that the Defense handed the football to the Offense all season long and despite the facts that the only teams we beat were teams who are not top 25 teams for the 2011 season. 74 teams have the opportunity to play 14-game seasons in 2012. 27 last season in 2011, ended up with 10-Win Seasons, and of those 27 teams, we had the most losses with 4. All this despite the fact that Mark Richt had The
Easiest Schedule of all The SEC Teams 2011
Easiest Schedule of all The SEC Teams 2012 too.
Do you think it is possible, just possible now, that you could look at the rankings of where we actually are for the 2011 season, and see any areas where the coaches and players could use some Motivation to Improve, or should we as a fanbase tell them they are great and have no pressure by the fanbase to improve in any of these areas ?
You’d have to be a Blind Homer to think that there is any summary of our Offense and Special Teams’ Play for the 2011 season, that surmises that we are great in any way, shape or manner on Special Teams or Offense.

Grantham is on record as saying that what he want’s is to be head coach some day of a great college team. I think he will be satisfied in Athens for the next 5 to 10 year’s. That will get his kid’s in college and by then will have enough success that he will get that head coaching job he want’s. Grantham already has the passion and knowledge to teach our defense to be dominate which is great new’s for us.
Grantham also get’s a great benefit, other than money , being at Georgia which is being influenced by Mark Richt concerning integrity, ethic’s , moral’s and other values that a lot of head coaches don’t have , the intangibles that Grantham will need to help him be able to coach and make college kid’s into men by the time they leave.

This is great news for the DAWG nation. The coach teaches these kids well, they like him and I am darn glad he brings fire to the game. These kids know their coach has got their back, and his intensity can’t help but rub off on the other coaches at UGA. Arthur Blank would be foolish to mess around with him, because he knows how DAWG fans would react, and then he would have trouble filling the stadium for home games. I read the ESPN article that states that Atlanta is already the worst city in terms of support for their professional teams, so he doesn’t need to alienate the fans even more. I am not surprised about Atlanta fans though, since they don’t even support their home town college team.
Coach Grantham will continue to coach at UGA for quite a while longer, and the UGA defense will be a work of beauty this fall. He has been getting the kids he needs through recruiting, they are motivated and he knows how to coach them up. Just think, in his second year at UGA, they finished in the top 5 in defense. Imagine what he will be able to do this year, with his returning troops, having had a year under him and the recruits UGA is getting on defense. If you are a true DAWG fan and not some troll making rude remarks on this blog, you have to feel pretty darn good about the defense UGA will have this year. Alabama showed once again that defense wins championships, and the DAWGS are capable of doing that as well, if our offense steps it up a little. The key to them being successful this year, is the OL being ready to go, the RB’s doing their job and cutting down on mistakes and the OC needs to stop calling a conservative game plan. If we can bury some of our opponents instead of expecting our D to preserve the game, we could give some serious nightmares to a lot of our opponents. If the offense plays consistently, there is no reason why we can’t bury more opponents like we did Auburn last year.

I was not a fan that approved of his hire but he has grown with the job and show a passion for the game. Sometimes that passion can get you in trouble such as the “choke sign” he gave the Gator kicker just before he beat the Dogs last year. Reminder:
Grantham’s great defensive coordination against top 25 teams:
Lost to Boise State – they scored 35 points
Lost to South Carolina – they scored 45 points
Lost to LSU – they scored 42 points
(and I know, Georgia played great against LSU for 2 quarters. But ask yourself, how many points did
Bama’s defense allow LSU in 8 quarters……9 points….and 0 points in the NC game).
Lost to Michigan State – 33 points
Even Vandy score 28 points on his defense.
But I am sure, all the above points were caused by the poor play calling of Mike Bobo…..and had nothing to do with the great defensive play calling of Mr. Grantham. Yep….they looked great against the above top 25 teams…..and Bobo’s offense was directly responsible for that 38.75 point average against those 4 teams. FIRE BOBO.
I would not be so eager to crown Mr. Grantham as the next great DC…not yet. He does seem to be able to talk fishing with recruits very well, however.

Florida’s defense against top 25 teams:
Lost to Bama – they scored 38 points

An average of 30 points a game against top 25 teams.

A few facts about your UGA that you might consider:
1. UGA is the nation’s #1 party school. That means that UGA has the highest number of drunks on campus of all the colleges and universities in the U.S. These drunks keep the Athens-Clarke County jail full, and provide full employment to law enforcement personnel, bail bondsmen, and attorneys. Really something to be proud of, isn’t it.
2. UGA athletes are some of the most illiterate morons in the country. Most of them take remedial studies, which is the stuff that most kids learn by the seventh grade. But not your dummies, who you laughingly call student-athletes. The very few who actually graduate have worthless diplomas in worthless studies that no employer is looking for.
3. Even your fans are trashy, stupid drunks. Take a look at what your campus looks like after a home game, and check the number of DUIs the police issue between Athens and Atlanta after a game.
4. UGA athletes must think that ankle monitoring bracelets are bling, they see so many of them in the locker room.
A really miserable, sorry place, and a huge embarrassment to all Georgians.
