Bulldogs watched BCS title game with envious eyes

Yesterday afternoon, about six hours before Alabama and LSU kicked off in the BCS Championship Game, I asked Georgia coach Mark Richt if he thought this time a year from now his 2012 team could be on that stage.

It wasn’t a ludicrous question, considering this year’s team led one of the participants for two quarters of the SEC championship. Nine starters return from the defense that did not allow LSU a first down and only 12 total yards in the first half of that contest.

Richt was, of course, predictably measured in his answer.

What do think the possibilities are for Georgia Bulldogs next season?

“As always, we want to compete in such a way and prepare in such a way that we’ve got a chance to win every time we go out there,” Richt said. “The goals aren’t going to change. We want to win the East. If you win the East and you win the SEC, you’ve got a shot at the next one. So, you know, that’s not going to change for us.”

If there was any lesson in last night’s game, won by the Crimson Tide 21-0 in New Orleans, it’s that defense still rules the day in college football. By all indications, Georgia is going to have that covered next season.

Meanwhile, the schedule certainly has broken the Bulldogs’ way. Due to realignment as a result of conference expansion, the SEC dropped Alabama from Georgia’s schedule and replaced it with new member Missouri. Now I don’t know much about the Tigers beyond the fact they lose 12 senior starters before next season. But you have to believe opening the SEC slate in Columbia, Mo., has to be better than playing the defending national champion Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa in October.

But the Bulldogs have several areas of concern to shore up, some of which might not be possible to sew up in a year. Georgia’s three best offensive linemen must be replaced, plus its starting fullback. The running game vanished at the end of the season. Tight end Orson Charles may be in the NFL next fall. Your record-setting punter and kicker are definitely gone. A special teams overhaul is in order besides.

Anybody who thinks Georgia is resting on its laurels of this past season hasn’t been listening to Richt.

“I think we came a long way this year,” he said of the 10-4 season. “I’m proud of the effort; I’m proud of the progress. But we’re still on a journey to do even greater things and that’s going to be the goal.”

Having gone on a 10-game run and having LSU on the ropes for the better part of 30 minutes, then watching their SEC brethren duke it out last night has to provide incentive.

“I would hope the guys would see it that way,” Richt said. “But every year has its new challenges and it’s going to be a new team. I knew that the day we walked out of the stadium after the Outback Bowl, that team right there was gone and they were never going to be together again. It’s going to be a new team next year and a new dynamic and a new leadership and chemistry and unity and all that kind of stuff. It’s going to get built again because everything is brand new. We’re just going to have the thought in mind of trying to get better on a daily basis and getting into position to compete at the highest level.”

The 2012 team had its first meeting as a group Sunday night at 8 p.m. at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. At that time, Richt assigned mentors to the younger players, appointed leaders and, finally, verbalized the goals and expectations for the upcoming season, which for them starts with offseason workouts in three weeks.

“I thought it was received real well,” Richt said. “It got serious at the end when we started talking about our future. I thought everybody responded well.”

South Carolina is, of course, saying the same things as Georgia today. Florida certainly won’t stay down long. Meanwhile, Alabama must replace eight senior starters, LSU nine, and who knows how many underclassmen may make the jump?

Staying on top is tough. The SEC hasn’t had a repeat champion in 14 years. But the league has produced the national champion now six years straight.

Who will it be next year?

Execution is key. Georgia actually had the talent to compete a few years ago when Stafford was here, but poor preparation, coaching, and no discipline doomed them.

Talent-wise, this team is far away from a championship. Knew this year would be a disaster from the very first play and watching Jarvis James helmet come off in order to display his dreadlocks. Then, proceeded to lose to a bunch of homies from Idaho.

It ain’t happenin with this bunch.

Techster…you’re too negative… AM will go 2nd round…and Richt will win a National Championship before you graduate from the North Avenue Trade School….

(I hope you all see the satire in this…please do not take any of my above comments seriously.)

I’m with DawgDawg — Put Bama back on the schedule so we don’t look like complete wimps in the future…If we’re going to play games next year, let’s play the best and prove that we either are, or are NOT, a real SEC team…I’m afraid we will be found wanting…But, I still want to do it playing Bama and not Florida Atlantic.

Fire Bobo and put the heat on Richt. If that doesn’t work — fire Richt.

I think we should allow only Positive Comments and Ban All Else, a Strategy for the last 6 seasons now, which has gone very well and obviously propelled us to the national stage with an average in excess of 4 losses a season for the last 6 seasons and counting.

If it ain’t broke, why fix it ?

Let’s just have everyone say we had a good season 2011 with 4 losses again, and if any of us true Bulldogs’ fans point out that we obviously did not have a good season, we can try a new approach such as we made a

Significant Step Forward

going 0-4 again against teams finishing in the top 10.

# 11 all-time program in wins, and we were 3 wins 9 losses coming into the season after 10 years and now after 11 years we are now 3 wins 13 losses vs teams finishing in the top 10.

Yep, we made a Significant Step Forward.

That one works.

So, does we had a Good Season 2011.

Now, who was it we beat ? 8-5 Georgia tek and 8-5 Auburn. T Kyle King disallows any 5-Loss team from being ranked in his upcoming Poll for the 2011 Season final rankings blog vote.

I was just sure he was going to limit it to just only the 27 teams who put up at least 10-Win Season 2011 for his top 25 poll upcoming.

Then, instead, I read where he gave up on College Football after our latest bowl loss to yet another team we should have beat but did not solely because of our little QB, again. And, now is disallowing Alabama from being voted on even for # 1.

Maybe the DISNEYdawgs.com that call that a Good Season 2011 or a Significant Step Forward 0-4 vs teams finishing top 10, again, would be well to go to T Kyle King’s blog or Bluto’s Get The Picture where Positive Posters are the only posts allowed. Make up rules to disallow anything not positive.

You see ?

Positive comments have served us so well these last 6 years. That works. Just only Positive Comments please.

Scratching my head now for a positive comment.

Oh, yeah.

Good Season

Significant Step Forward.

Great excellent 4-Loss Season, slightly better than our avg last 6 yrs

I got it, we beat two 8-5 teams as our only wins – neither ranked obviously.

Instead while the rest of The Bulldog Nation is licking our wounds of yet another # 7 recruiting class and # 20 or # 19 finish in the polls with 4 losses, you want us to stop that discussion and discuss what exactly, again, please sir ?

And, you call yourself smart.

Let’s bottom line it:

I watched Alabama last night and thought to myself, “what can we do to get back to that level of play”? I answers myself and thought “I wonder if Richt and Bobo are thinking the same thing”? My best guess is that they are. The problem is that they believe it’s player execution versus scheme, coaching, and gameplan. They are partially right, but that brings us back to coaching. Let’s learn from the past. Richt consistently took up for Willie Martinez when we were getting blown off the field by other teams and never stopped anyone. I remember watching the WV game in 2005 and saying to family and friends, “this is not GA defense”. Richt defended his guy even though there was institutional rot for the next few years. Finally we get a real football coach in Grantham and look what he’s producing. 2nd year in 3-4 and we’re back having national respect on D. Look at the players he’s hauling in. Jenkins was pulled from Alabama after they just won a National Championship. That’s a statement gents. Now, let’s turn to offense. Where is the production? Where is the “turn around”. Its not there. Why? Because we has the same scheme that we’ve had since 2000. Some may say “so what”? I say, fine. But get players that can be successful in that scheme. My gut tells me that maybe, just maybe, if Murray can grow up, Marshall is a Lattimore type back, and we fix some things on the Oline, we could get back to 2002 type production. Remember, we never had to put 30 points on anyone becuase no one scored more then 17 on our defense. That’s the type of D we have again. Let’s get the O on board and let’s GATA!

It’s really tough to stomach reading those written by people who are jealous of what Bama has done. What happens in T-town has no effect on UGA’s football fortune. I’m tired of peaking under Richt. He says he wants to coach in Athens for the next ten to fifteen years. I might have to take a sabbatical from him and the team, until he goes. Then I’ll try to get behind that guy and support him, and then, I won’t be so negative, angry, and p*ssed-off every time I see the Dawgs play against wimpy teams, or lose every time against a quality opponent. It still was fun to beat UF this year, but it just didn’t seem like a very fun season, nor last year,… I think real football fans know the difference between good football and bad football — read as, quality football is what fans really want. I think Richt has drunk his own kool-aid, but he should have more integrity than that. I still sadly laugh to think that Bobo will be our OC next year. It feels like the rain won’t stop in Athens…

Sir, if it is Player Execution (Do our own coaches in addition to all our opponents who throw the little guy around like a rag-doll back there, want to do in our QB?)

Then, with Avg # 7 recruiting class all 12 years for Mark Richt avg both Rivals and Scout rankings all years both services which is 2nd best in the nation

Player Execution

Would mean what ?

That we need BETTER PLAYERS as I have read some on this blog ?

Or, is it that recruiting is not the issue. Mizzou has done better than we have over their last 6 years compared to our last 6 years and they don’t recruit anywhere near Mark Richt’s level. In fact, 4 times worse in the rankings these last 6 years. So, if they are Better and have Way Worse players

Player Execution

is a cop-out by our Coaching Staff, intact once again for 2012.

2002 type production ?

2002 there only was 1 other SEC team who finished Coaches’ Poll top 25, a 4-loss Auburn. We beat no team who finished in the top 10 all season.

What production in a Down SEC 2002 by UGA please ?

We are # 52 Total Offense NCAA avg all 11 years to-date.

Consistently, poorly coached offense.

We had Knowshon Moreno for 2008 and in the 3 games against the only 3 teams we played 2008, he averaged 13 carries a game. We gave up Consecutive Points of 31, 42 and 29 to the only 3 teams we played, losing all 3.

We had Matthew Stafford all 2007 every game and ended up # 83 Passing Offense in the NCAA.

It has NOTHING to do with Talent, now does it ?

We squander the Talent the great recruiting of Mark Richt brings us.

Don’t we ?

Haven’t we ?

All 11 years, including 2002, when The SEC was Down. Way Down. The SEC has not been Down after 2002. The best we have finished in the Polls was 2005 when we ended up the # 3 SEC team in Every Poll 2005. Even with DJ Shockley 2005, the coaching staff told us Joe Tereshinski III was our best QB (they later put him and Joe Cox ahead of Matthew Stafford # 1 overall NFL pick on their Depth Chart.) for injured DJ Shockley when anyone else vs Florida and we beat Florida 2005, then with DJ trying to come back the next game, we lost to Auburn. Then, The Sugar Bowl that Never Happened I was at the Georgia Dome in 2005, mentioned above, I sat down and no sooner looked up to see we had given up 28 points to our zero. 0-28. We lost that game obviously too. With DJ Shockley.

We don’t lack Player Execution.

We lack coaching of the Talent Handed this Coaching staff by Mark Richt all 11 years.

We will again with a pat hand coaching staff for 2012.

Right ?

Missouri with 11 senior starters gone from an unranked 8-5 team 2011 who lost to 6-7 Arizona – yes has no defense, cannot defend the forward pass, has no special teams and no passing game, only runs the football faces off against the likes of Alabama.

If you think that is Bad. Just Wait. Texas A&M with 39 percent win percentage all-time vs The SEC plays in The SEC West where I don’t see them winning a game. Texas A&M is the one in for a rude awakening. I have spent signficant time on Texas A&M blogs as this has been on-coming for them to join us in The SEC. They point to 1 play of a blow-out loss to us and say that they don’t see the speed of The SEC. Trust me on this, Texas A&M is WAY Worse than Mizzou.

You’ve got to now go and add me to the list ?

What did I do ?

You asked me for a Missouri analysis, and in fact asked specifically for only that which I then provided. It is a fair and accurate review of Mizzou football. I gave them credit for running and doing better than Mark Richt over the last 6 seasons with # 31 recruiting classes to his # 7.

And, that put me up there with Bozo ?

Patently unfair.

4.29: You’re still not getting any love from me… You just made me feel worse… I need Obama-care right now. Can I get some Occupy Texas A&M and Occupy Mizzou-help please. :o )

And so, what you’re telling me is, “We’re still not going to play Bama in the season openner? And, I have to settle for watching Mizzou, who might, or might not, whip us, with worse kids than what we recruit?” I’m more fragile now than when this whole blogging thing started… I felt better, when I ONLY knew that Bobo was still our OC.

4.29 & MaconDawg: You two are having way to much fun! We’re (yes, I included myself with you two and the Bulldawg Nation) suppose to be grieving and bemoaning the near apparent downfall of a great football program in Athens, and you two are arguing over who should or should not be on the moveonbobo.com list! Are you kidding me! Western Civilization is at stake here! Geez, c’mon!

What do the Bulldawgs think about have a former d-coordinator in Van Goter move to Auburn? Happy for him? Anger? Bitterness? I think he thinks he can shut down Murrary & Camp. What say you…

TechMan: I think my mom can shut down Murray & Camp. (By the way, TechMan, it is not Murrary, you knucklehead, but Murray! What? They don’t teach you how to spell at the Trade School!) Ha…
