First sight of RB signee Keith Marshall brings grin to Mark Richt’s face

A lot of news and notes coming out of the Georgia football camp on Monday, starting with Brandon Boykin being named the recipient of the 2011 Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player. I’m in the process of putting together a notebook for tomorrow’s newspaper. But, in the meantime, following is a quick summary of the information and quotes that came out of today’s season-wrapup teleconference call with Georgia coach Mark Richt. Enjoy . . .

MARK RICHT

On 5-star running back signee Keith Marshall, an early enrollee who began classes at UGA on Monday:

“He’s a very talented young man. He’s very focused. As a matter of fact, I walked into the meeting last night and he had a playbook in his hand and he was looking over assignments. It just gave me a moment to grin seeing how excited he was about being at Georgia.

“I’m sure he’s a little nervous, too, like a lot of guys. I remember my first night I spent away from home. There’s a little bit of anxiety, but it’s mixed in there with a lot of excitement.”

On what running backs have to do to play better:

“I think the biggest thing will be consistency and maturity. That’s what we have got to get. We played a lot of inexperienced running backs. Those guys have gained some experience and hopefully because of that they will become more mature players and more consistent players. I think that’s going to be the two most important things for me. And as always the fundamental things such as ball security and pass protection are important. We have to do a better job than we have in that area this year.”

On the Bulldogs’ two other early enrollees, quarterback Faton Bauta and offensive lineman Mark Beard:

“Pronounce this man’s name properly . . . it’s Fuh-TONE BOW-tuh. He’s a quarterback for us. Faton is here as well, as is Mark Beard, an offensive lineman for us. Those guys were here at the team meeting last night. They got a chance to introduce themselves to their teammates and got a round of applause from their teammates. They did a good job of welcoming them. And now they’re going to class and getting ready for the off-season program.” [Added that Bauta will definitely play quarterback)

On off-season priorities for trying to get to the next level:

  • "I think there's no doubt that we've got to be a whole lot better on special teams top to bottom. We went through some growing pains with some young guys. We kind of bit the bullet with some true freshmen and some inexperienced guys. But, you know, the good news is they will be a year better. And we will make sure all hands are on deck as far special teams. Whatever it takes. We as coaches also have to review everything we do and make sure we feel very confident that we're doing the right things with the right personnel. That's going to be big for us.
  • "We also want to create as much depth as we possibly can so we can continue to try to finish better.
  • "We definitely want to be able to run the ball extremely well. That's going to be a big challenge for us breaking in some new linemen offensively.
  • "Even defensively we've got to make sure we can finish the games like we start them."

On satisfaction of the 10-4 season:

"I think we came a long way this year. I'm proud of the effort. I'm proud of the progress. But we're still on a journey to do even greater things and that's going to be the goal."

On whether coaching staff will remain intact:

"I certainly hope so. I've had no indication otherwise. I guess I'll just leave it at that. I've heard nothing at all."

On whether sophomore quarterback Hutson Mason will return next season:

"I've talked to Hutson a couple of times and I'm not sure he's 100 percent settled on what he's going to do at this moment. But when that time comes we'll let everybody know."

On decisions of tight end Orson Charles and some other underclassmen to enter the NFL draft or not:

"We had a team meeting last night and all those guys were there. That doesn't guarantee everybody's going to stay, but at least they were all there. I guess it means they aren't 100 percent sure what they're going to do. When is everybody going to decide and have some finality to it? I don't know. Certainly they have to have it by the deadline. I think there's some guys who's heads are spinning still and they're not 100 percent sure what they're going to do.

"There's a bunch of them staying, but I can't sit here and say every guy has nailed it down."

On decision of sophomore cornerback Jordan Love to transfer:

"I just want to say that I really appreciate everything Jordan contributed to Georgia. He's a great kid and I really wish him well." [Knows of no one else leaving]

On whether they’ll sign full allotment of 25 scholarships in recruiting:

“That’s the hope. We’ll see. There’s a lot of things to do and there’s still a lot of great players out there. There’s a lot of decisions to be made. We’re just working our tails off trying to finish this class off as best we can. We’re going to have to wait and see if we get the full allotment or not. But we’ll be shooting for it.”

Goals for 2012 season:

“As always, we want to compete in such a way and prepare in such a way that we’ve got a chance to win every time we go out there. The goals aren’t going to change. We want to win the East. If you win the East and you win the SEC, you’ve got a shot at the next one. So, you know, that’s not going to change for us.”

ALSO:

Offensive lineman Trinton Sturdivant is not expected to return for a sixth season. . . . No changes forthcoming in Strength & conditioning. . . . Spring practice will begin the week after UGA’s spring break [around March 19). . . . Richt favors the $2,000 stipend for student-athletes.

Both Defenses are top-shelf, without a doubt. Both teams have a ton of talent, without a doubt. Both teams have 1st class special teams, without a doubt. An offense cannot be measured in yards, points scored, or touchdown passes. It just cannot. The quicker we ‘Dawg Nation learn that fact, the better we will be as fans, assisting our program to accomplish its actual goals of being the top-ranked team. It is the ONLY OBJECTIVE. Tim Tebow is not a great QB because 1 game he throws passes for a TD, and took the last 3 games off prior to that – by the same exact measure. If you look at the truly great quarterbacks, they do NOT fumble the ball after running for 1 yard, they do not get into game-winning situations and throw their interceptions only then, and when they are at the 15-yard line with no time-outs left and a minute to go in the game, they calmly coolly direct the team down the field as the On-Field General and score. And, they beat the truly great teams, not some cruddy win over an 8-5 team or 2 cruddy wins over 2 teams going 8-5 no one thinks is any good whatsoever – especially you yourself.

We have a sorry schedule next season. There may be 1 team who ends up in the top 25 of all the regular season games. And, then again, there might be none of the opponents of all the regular season games next season who end up in the top 25 at all.

How many yards we throw for against them, how many touchdown passes we throw against them, without discussing a college Quarterback has to be able to RUN the football and do so consistently WITHOUT 21 FUMBLES in 27 Starts, and has to be able to consistently NOT over-throw and throw behind his receivers and without discussing his 22 INTERCEPTIONS in 27 games, and without discussing he has LOST 41 PERCENT OF HIS STARTS 11 OF 27 INCLUDING EVERY GAME AGAINST EVERY TEAM WHO ENDED UP TOP 25 in his entire career – all of that means as much as a 10-Win “GOOD” season when 27 other teams also had 10-Win seasons while we beat NONE of the other 26.

You know how a team is measured.

LSU # 2
Alabama # 1

Exactly as I said.

You said Alabama DID NOT DESERVE TO BE EVEN IN THE GAME.

Quit redefining football and what is good in football to suit the stats of a player who is NO STINKING GOOD or to over-inflate a Coach’s won/lost record when he consistently loses to sorry cruddy teams at more than 1 and a half of those a season, has a 17-28 record all his 11 years against teams who finished in the top 25 and has a 3-11 record vs teams who finished in the top 10, has no concept of Discipline except to forgive, and whose lies you run in here daily to try to substantiate.

Get your nose out of his backside, and this program you and I WANT TO DO WELL, will finally have everyone saying what needs to be said to ACTUALLY DO WELL.

A few salient comments:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

We beat none of the top 25 Coaches’ Poll teams either.

There are 4 SEC teams in the top 10 of BOTH POLLS.

Georgia is either the # 20 or the # 19 team.

Every team of the top 25 of both polls won at least 10 games.

4 teams who won 10 games did not make either poll top 25.

10-Wins is not a measure of the top teams, not with 27 who did.

Georgia is # 5 team in our own conference;

We are the 2nd best team in our own division;

This according to EVERY POLL.

Yet, we beat none of the teams finishing top 25 in either poll.

The entire formula for this teams future success was revealed once again in the Outback bowl. With 3 mins left and the football, we could not run for a single first down to get the win. We could not THINK about blocking the Boise State defensive line in the first game either. Only against Florida and Auburn did we get the power running game going.

Bottom Line: The offensive line must get quicker footwork and be stronger at the point of attack. Michigan State D-line whipped their tails all day long.

We cannot evaluate Bobo as a play caller until the blocking is better. If he knew he had a power running game to go to when he needed it, it would open up everything else.

Thanks PreyDawg!
I’ve been “preachin’” that forever. I know it starts at the top, but the ELEPHANT in the room is our line! Size is not the only issue….being able to friggin’ block for a run game is! Against good teams, our o-line got their butts handed to them! Until we bring in some real, coachable o-linemen that can run-block these blogs will look the same next year! It is NOT just blogging or arm-chair QB’s that make this acessment. The left-handed one-eyed co-pilots association can see that we cannot run block! Blocking and tackling are the two items in football that are consistent from Pop Warner to the NFL! And B-State, M-State (yes, they had great D-lines) showed us we cannot play with the big boys! Blame Bobo all you want, but its hard to come up with a real gameplan when you take the running game basically out (except when we are playing the sisters of Mercy!)

On offense, I’m sorry folks but we need and upgrade at OC.

If Auburn or florida hires Brent Peace from Boise as OC, they just passed us.

It is what it is.

Good for Michigan state to end up # 10.

The thing is, that is their pinnacle.

For us, it would have been ok if we had beat them but still not where we want to be.

I agree that Bobo either needs to change his ways or be demoted to QB Coach and Recuiting Guru. YES, our offensive line has been mediocre, and has been for SEVERAL years now. But, Coach’s Bobo’s choices in playcalling do NOT help us. For example,

1. He is too predictable – 1st down incompletion = 2nd down run between the tackles at least 75% of time.

2. 1st and 20 after a penalty = a draw or similar run is called at least half the time, with a rare screen pass being our other option.

3. If we have a modest lead, we become as conservative as Vince Dooley running the veer offense back in the 70s. We play not to lose, rather than keeping the foot on the gas pedal.

4. If we are being successful with either passing or running, BOBO stops what we are doing and seeks “balance”, rather than forcing the OTHER team to stop us!! (look at Michigan State – we PASSED for over 280 yards on 32 attempts. We RAN for 51 yards on 39 attempts, and Malcome had all 51 of those yards. So, if you are playing to WIN, would you choose 9 yards per attempt, or barely over 1 yard per carry, as your weapon of choice??!?!?!?!? Bobo chose 1 yard per carry.

There are more examples, but I am tired of typing. GO DAWGS!!!

Richt is in favor of giving players a $2,000 food allowance. Does that mean UGA can fire the nutritionist and her assistance and hire a special team coach? UGA has solved the nutrition problem in one year. Will the scooter accidents go when they use the $2,000 to buy scooters to avoid walking or buses? Have the players improved that much when their decision making? Don’t believe they have.

Guys, let’s not kid oursevles, we are not in the same league with Alabama or LSU until we get a real Strength and Conditioning program. And as you see above, there will be no change this offseason. Just saying that we need more bodies to “finish the drill” does not get us stronger and better conditioned players. I spoke with one of our linemen last week and he said that coach T is not getting it done and is too “old school”. This is from a guy who says that most of the players feel this way. When will CMR get it that he is not employing the best and newest technology in regards to training? I hope this is not an issue this time next year.

With ICro, Marshall and Davis, the Dawg running game will dominate the SEC! Ga’s offense will be lighting up the scoreboard bigtime in 2012—SEC title—book it!

I have been reading all of these learned comments and I am truly amazed at how deeply educated some of you fans are in all the fazes of college coaching. If Bobo calls a pass play while UGA is leading and Murry throws a pick 6 then it is Bobo making a bad call. If the play goes for 6 then Murry made a great throw. Our D plays good this year and it is TG that did a great job. Who hired TG? There are so many parts to this game both on on off the field that your pea brains can’t fatham and yet each of you is an expert. Only one problem, if you got paid for successful comments a lot of you would starve. Be happy with this season. I said happy not satisfied. I a Dawg long before most of you were born and I have seen the GOOD TIMES 1980/1984 and the bad 1961/1963. The only folks that are happy with the ALA victory are ALA fans. Just remember that ALA didn’t win the SEC WEST so the three best teams in the USA are ALA (NAT CHAMPS) LSU (SEC WEST CHAMPS) and UGA (SEC EAST CHAMPS) As to recruting numbers without quality and coascability means nothing. Just look at last year there is no replacement for hard work and dedication. We probably wouldn’t ever have another “HERCHEL WALKERW the GOAL LINE STAKER”.

Georgia O – I hope Marshall can give us that kind of a spark. We’ve had no real running threat since Knowshon left to the NFL. A large part of the problem is our pass first philosophy. We try to run to set up the pass. Another part of the problem is our O line recruits. They are a bunch of fat silver-spoon prep-school kids that get slapped down by smaller opponents. Part of that is scheme. Bobo does not understand traditional GA/SEC football.

I hope the dual TB threat of Crowell and Marshall will produce a 100 yrd a game scenario. If we can do that, not many teams will be able to beat us. Yes, I know we have other problems but it starts in the trenches and in the back field.

Looks like Marshall is the real deal – a quality individual. I do not think Crowell will not respond well to the competition. He will likely wash out completely or end up as South Alabama.

Marshall — maybe the best RB recruit in the country. I’ve seen him play—he has the chance to be the next Herschel Walker at UGA—he’s a can’t miss superstar. With Marshall and Murray next year, Ga will dominate the SEC east. This time, they will beat alabama for the title.
