3-year deal in works for Georgia D-coordinator Todd Grantham

ATHENS – Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity confirmed Friday he is in the midst of working on a contract extension for defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

Grantham’s California-based attorney, Michael Harrison, told the AJC in November he was was seeking an extension for his client. Grantham signed a three-year contract that pays him $750,000 annually when he was hired by coach Mark Richt from the Dallas Cowboys in January of 2010. Grantham has 13 months remaining on that contract.

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity never had an assistant coach under a multi-year agreement in 18 years while he was at Florida. But he is making an exception for Grantham.

“That’s what we’re working to right now,” McGarity said Friday. “We’re discussing it. Mark and I have discussed it and we’re trying to work through that right now. It’s just tough to get everybody together because of coaching conventions and recruiting and things like that. But we’re moving along in that direction.”

McGarity indicated that any new deal with Grantham would likely resemble the old deal. In other words, two years would be added to the existing agreement to get Grantham back to three years. But negotiations are ongoing.

That said, don’t expect a tremendous pay raise for Grantham, if any. He is currently the second highest-paid defensive coordinator in FBS. Alabama’s Kirby Smart is first at $850,000.

“The most important thing is the longevity piece,” McGarity said. “From a compensation standpoint it’s hard to argue that we’re not being fair to him. My whole thing is being fair to people and I think we’re being fair.”

As is his practice, McGarity is dealing with Grantham directly and not his attorney or other representation.

Georgia’s defense has definitely improved under Grantham’s leadership. The Bulldogs finished the 2011 season ranked in the Top 20 nationally in all seven primary statistical categories, including No. 3 in total defense (268.5 ypg), 4th in pass efficiency (98.27), 7th in passing yards allowed (165.9) and 11th in rushing (103.4). Nine starters are currently slated to return to that unit and recruiting prospects are starting to line up to play for Grantham.

The question now is whether McGarity will relax his stance on multi-year contracts for coordinators. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is working on a one-year contract, as are Georgia’s other assistants.

“We have not had those discussions,” McGarity said of a multi-year for Bobo. “I’m focused on Mark’s and we’ve talked a little bit about Todd’s. That’s what we’re working on right now.”

I am posting now because I can’t stand all the immature kids on here anymore. There will be all kinds that come on here and talk about his character and how he is embarrassing the university. Go home little kids we don’t care. The only thing that matters is getting to the top.

GO DAWGS!!
We definitely need to keep Grantham. He seems to be a great defensive mind. On the other hand, Bobo doesn’t seem to have things going in the right direction. They seem to think they can run the same plays consistently instead of making adjustments throughout the game, or maybe he just doesn’t know when to call the right plays(hes way too predictable)’. I think that is why we stutter in the second half. Maybe CMR should start play-calling again. I know the point-avg. may be favorable to Bobo but it seems like everything jelled well with Richt behind the reins.

`We definitely have the talent to be in the SEC & NC hunt next year. It just a shame to see all the talent with lackluster performances against decent teams. I trust in Richt to get things going in the right direction though. And it seems as though McGarity knows what he’s doing by signing Grantham to the new deal – for us and for recruits. That said , he really needs to consider the Bobo situation.

My first comment and my first FIRST! – since no1 else took it

Frankly, for several reasons, the UGA O for a few years now has been inconsistent. We have a 3rd year player in Aaron Murray who is an emotional head case in big games, he does not protect the ball and he makes really dumb, panic sticken throws that have cost UGA about 4 or 5 of his 22? starts. No running game, no scemes that allow us to drive the ball in IMPORTANT games. I am done with Bobo and Aaron Murray.

CTG is the real deal. PAY THE MAN. If he leaves, UGA will be 6-7 and I am a UGA grad. and will admit that. Richt should be year to year. He has done nothing with our talent for 5 or 6 years now. Who needs that?

Grantham’s defense is good because of talent that he had nothing to do with bringing to Georgia. I don’t think our defense is that far from LSU’s or Bama’s. We just need a little more depth. Unlike us, LSU and Bama have offenses that rarely put their defenses in difficult situations. We either turn the ball over deep in enemy territory, have a 3 and out, or score on some big pass plays in 20 seconds. Our defense is barely even gets to sit down and talk to the coaches before it has to go back out on the field. We need to go 5 and 6 deep at every defensive position to have enough gas in the tank at the end of games, but NCAA rules don’t allow that.

To all the Murray bashers that talk about how he never wins big games, guess what? Neither Stafford nor Cox won that many big games either. Guess who was their offensive coordinator: Mike Bobo. See a pattern? If your zipping the ball all over the field like Mike Bobo loves to do in big games there are going to be interceptions. Joe Montana could be our quarterback and there will still be interceptions. Our QBs make bad throws because Bobo allows them to make bad throws. Bobo thinks that the only way we can win big games is by throwing the ball 30+ times per game. He does it time and time again. Well guess what happens when you throw the ball that much against a good defense? They are going to get some interceptions. This is not rocket science. Its just math.

Some of you sound like Tech fans that get all shocked when their triple option offense fumbles. Well duh. Your tossing the ball around in the backfield every single play like its a hot potatoe. OF COURSE there are going to be fumbles morons.

Thanks.

Todd Grantham deserves a contract extension. Richt does also, but DEFINITELY NOT Bobo. Move him back to QB coach where he really doesn’t even deserve. Without the defense this year, we would not have won at least 4 of our games this season. Think about it. We won barely against Vanderbilt, Florida and Kentucky. Even with Tennessee, the score was 20-12. Without the help of the defense, our FLAT offense wouldn’t have been able to pull that win.

Plus with the Vanderbilt, Florida and Outback Bowl, the offense doesn’t play to win….they play to survive. Bobo’s lack of creativity on offensive schemes creates a one dimensional offense. Run it down the middle on “repeat”. No clock management and a lack of passion/fire is what Bobo gives to the offense.

So, let’s move Bobo, extend CTG’s contract. Keep Richt for recruiting and let’s hire a new offensive coordinator. As much as I hate Auburn, we really need our own version of Gus Malzahn that coached that Chick-Fil-A Bowl….that’s some good play calling right there.

The bottom line is that everyone should come back and that includes all of the players (Charles, Rambo, Smith and Washington) if they want to have something special. The big issue is the O line and how calls are mad to protect them). The issue for the past three years is O Line performance and that has been resolved by hiring will Friend. The offense has to be predicated on the defense and that is the issue with Mike Bobo. He has not made calls of having a good defense until this year and he has not been good at it. So now that he know how to not hang them out to dry he will be better at it and so will the O line.

Grantham isn’t overrated. He is good, necessarily not the best defensive coordinator in the land, but he gets his part of the job done. Outback bowl is the perfect example in which the defensive gave the offensive so many chances to run the clock down and score. Pretty much the entire second half except for a couple of occasions, it was 3 and out.

Defense doesn’t have to have great stats as far as points scored against. They play great when the it counts. Unfortunately for the offense, they never pull their weight when we need it the most. And kicker isn’t helping with that either this season. (cuz’ every other season, the kicker bailed out the offense)

I must say, without Grantham, he probably would not be our coach today. Got to get the offensive problems figured out to take it to the next level. Murray’s unforced errors have really hurt us this year and cost us at least 2 games. A running game would help, but Murray has got to take responsibility for the TO’s. Did’nt really like his comments after the bowl when he said the 2 Int’s did’nt let MSU back in the game. We have got to learn to play every play like the score is 0 to 0 or we will never get to where we want to be. Someone has got to demand perfection like Saban. Grantham is a great defensive coordinator. Georgia gave up most of their point’s in the second half when the offense is going 3 and out and when Murray start’s turning the ball over. It is my opinion that Georgia would have beaten LSU , South Carolina and Michigan State if Murray doesn’t turn the ball over in those game’s. In 2009 our defense was terrible because they where in such poor condition and they had to learn a complete new scheme, the 3-4. Most of these recruit’s were recruited to run the 4-3 so they had a lot to learn. Then coach T brought in a tough Strength and Conditioning program that turned the defensive into shut down artist for at least half the game. Hugh improvement from 2009. There was no way Georgia was going to be able to turn their program around in one year like most of you unrealistically fan’s wanted.
You will see a huge improvement from a great 2011 season, next year. Grantham would have his recruit’s for a second year and the entire team will benefit from the Coach T and the new Strength and Conditioning program and Nutrition put in place in January 2010.
Also, you hater’s need to let it sink in that if Blair Walsh doesn’t have the worst year for a Georgia field goal kicker in the last 30 year’s or longer then we beat South Carolina and Michigan State taking consideration that we would have even played Michigan State . My take on it is we would have had a BCS bowl game or the Capitol One bowl.
I may have to eat my word’s but I think Georgia at worst loses one game in 2012.

Please, please, please extend Grantham’s contract to 4 with a buyout and a bigger please, please, please…do NOT offer anything to mindless Bobo. Anybody who rushes 39 times for 51 yards and 2 running plays account for most of those 51 yards and keeps doing it over and over is not only hard headheaded, tunnel visoned but just plain too damn stupid to be in a position like that. He has cost Georgia more games than you can count and relied on the aforementioned Grantham to bail his backside out which has happened more than once. If we had an OC who could be just a little innovative, our defense would even be that much better not having to run out there after so many 3 and outs!!!!!!!!!!

our defense is solid but our offense is spotty. our offense play terrible when it counts most. we scored 70 pts against coastal Carolina but cant gain 5 yards against Michigan state for a field goal, and still people argue that Georgia scoring offense is better than when Richt was OC look at the numbers, and I say look at wins and losses.
our offense struggled against good teams! the margin of error is very slim and Bobo is a terrible play caller! he has tendency to screw things big time. I say fire Bobo now!!!!!!!!

Any fan that makes a negative remark about Grantham’s character should have to prove they were a leader athlete on a sport’s team. If you were just on a great team that doesn’t count because you have no idea, not even a remote chance you could know how competitive and focused on winning and nothing else a leader is. Yes Grantham went too far a few time’s but he is driven and there was a learning curve for someone who has spent the last 11 year’s in Pro football around a bunch of conceded, egotistical MEN.
I was an above average athlete and would have been great if I wasn’t too little for Pro and I can tell you that some of the best coaches I had over the year’s make Grantham look like wimp.

Sorry, Bobo, but you’ve got to earn it if you want it. Grantham’s D is the reason UGA went from 6 to 10 wins in one season and was even competitive in most of the losses.

Mike Bobo, if you want a contract like Grantham’s, step your game up. The offense needs to perform far better. Right now, it looks more like a bunch of talented players occasionally bailing out a bad gameplan.

Brent Peace will meet with Nick Saban on Tuesday after the NC game and Brent will be the OC for Will and the Gators or Bama. I think UF will be his best gig for he can run his offense as he would like. If he selects Bama then he will run Nick’s offense with his input and updates. Moving on, send Bobo back to Thomasville, and THEN we can get a good O.C. whom we can give a mulit year deal. In the meantime, just for fun, why don’t we let CMR, and CTG keep their respective titles, HOWEVER, why don’t we pay CTG $3 million per year with a buyout clause, and pay CMR $750,000 with a one year contract. Maybe THAT will light a fire under CMR to do better against teams that are better than us. Like we did against LSU in the FIRST half of the SEC championship game.

does anyone pay attention to the fact that with the offense not being able to sustain a drive, they are leaving the defense on the field too much, so that they are worn down by the 3rd or 4th quater. If the offense would sustain drives, the D would play that much better down the stretch. @Facts…trying to say anything that supports GT being superior in football or ANY other sport over the last 20 years, especially football is HYSTERICALLY HILARIOUS! Lets just ask one thing concerning football. How many wins does your CURRENT coach have against our CURRENT coach? How many? Who won this year? Uh huh. Case closed.

GT hopes of beating UGA with their current coach is extremely slim. What is going to change? I hope you keep Johnson for another 10 years…..

Bobo should be on a day-to-day contract. I am assuming we dont have the cash to pay Grantham and an OC similar money or we would have one. I would rather have Eric Zeier as OC personally but I guess he is not into coaching. Bobo NEVER played a down in the NFL so he does not have that experience, knowledge of perspective. There is a light that has not yet gone off for Bobo and its past time for it to happen. UGA is going to have a lot of potential the next few years and I would hate to see Bobo screw it up. TEACH YOUR QB’S HOW TO THROW SHORT PASSES TO RUNNING BACKS! TEACH YOUR OFFENSE HOW TO RUN SCREEN PLAYS FOR PETE’S SAKE! Stop running the ball over and over and over trying to run out clock against good defenses when they are waiting on it! Throw to the backs and get them in a position of having some room to make a huge play and at least a large gainer! Those are great plays not being ran….When the running game is not going well this is VITAL!

Smart getting $850k…wow what a sweet situation he stepped into with Saban making him look so good he gets that kind of cash! I am sure he has learned a lot and getting head coaching offers bumped it up but $850k? WOW. Maybe he is better than I give him credit for but I definitely am not convinced and he has not had a chance to prove it. Regardless he is learning from the best…

Exactly. That was creativity and imagination at it’s best. Bozo should watch the replay of that game everyday from now until the season starts, maybe he could learn something. But then again, I don’t think he would pick up on anything.

Grantham on the other hand deserves an extension, he’s done a great job. For those who say the defense folded at times in the 2nd half, it’s mainly because Murray and the offense turned the ball over and put them in bad positions. Plus they had to stay on the field a lot like they did against LSU in the 2nd half. I think they did as well as could be expected.

Keep Granthan and go out and get an equally good OC and put Bozo back to QB coach. McGarity is a fool if he can’t see this.

Everybody but Richt apparently. So Richt just quit on that posession, didn’t even try to get the ball closer and brought out a kicker that can’t hit the broad side of a barn. That’s the kind of coaching we have and will continue to have thanks to McGarity. We will never be on the same level as LSU and Alabama under Richt and will get hammered every time we play them. Let bring you to a bit of reality my friend

Notre Dame is suffering from many problems

1. This isnt the 1950’s 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s where Notre Dame was the one of the only teams on national TV which was a huge advantage to them because kids knew they could be seen by the NFL, now teams like UGA are on TV almost every game.

2. The state of Georgia is a top 4 recruiting state; Indiana and the Chicago area is not even close

3. These kids know; nor do they care about the Notre Dame tradition; they want to go where they can win

4. South Bend is the size of Valdosta Ga; kids want to go somewhere fun and have something to do

5. Academic standards are much harder so since they dont have the popularity of the TV helping them to be seen more to get into the pros it is harder to get the dumb athletes to qualify, just ask Tech

6. Its a cold weather town; and the best high school football is played in the south most of those kids arent going up their in the frozen cold

The state of Michigan is suffering from their stupidity of wanting to work for 6 figure salaries that companies cant afford so they are loosing jobs hence losing recruits plus the north doesnt have the high school football like the south now

and again take most of Notre Dames problems other than academics and thats why UGA doesnt have the problems of those schools

Chris

Thanks for pointing all that out Flat Tire… all I am saying is that if you and all these other people on here whine and complain about a 10 win season the way you all do I would hate to see how you would comment on a blog about those schools. Believe me I take my UGA football serious, maybe too much sometimes, but some of the stuff on here is even way past my level. Again you need to read more of my posts

I dont whine about 10 wins

I whine about a coach paid $3 million a year that hasnt beaten a top 20 team in 3 years that has a top 4 recruiting state with the luxury of not having other teams in the state to have to compete with like USC in California, Texas Texas AM and many others in Texas, FSU FL Miami in FL, etc

I whine because our coach is 31-28 against top 25 teams; 8-12 against the top 10, subtract Tech’s one time in the top 10 and he is actually 7-12

Richt hasnt won a big game in 6 yrs

10 wins is nice but there are plenty of teams that avg 10 wins every year big deal.

I also whine that UGA fans have to fork out a ton of money to watch a poor product on the field while we are talking about an undeserved contract extension for Richt

Hey; if all UGA wants is 10 wins and beat a top 15 team once every 3 or 4 years thats fine; just dont demand that UGA fans pay so much to see this garbage.

You guys who only state points allowed as defensive statistics don’t have a clue. How many points were given up this year due to pick sixes and special teams miscues. Those points cannot be attributed to the defense. Also what about the poor field position because of dumb offensive play calls which result in 3 and outs due to running a 175 pound running back up the middle on a delay on 3rd and long? While I think our defense could use some work on sudden transitions in a game (offense turns it over, etc). It is very hard to play defense when the other team starts on your side of the field all the time.

Also, the lack of execution on offense is at least as responsible as the play calling. I am as frustrated as many of you. However, I think back to 1980 and Herschel Walker. The play calling consisted of toss sweep right, toss sweep left, and sprint draws. That offensive line knew how to block. Herschel was incredible, but the offensive line contributed more than you think to his success. Teams knew what was coming almost every time, but we still ran the ball effectively. Belue was also a good quarterback who made good decisions and was protected well. He could also chuck it down the field pretty good.

Yes, it is the offensive coordinator’s responsibility for execution or lack thereof. Like when John McKay was asked about his offense’s execution and he said “I am in favor of it” Pretty much describes the Dawgs.

I wish they’d give Grantham a 5 year deal, not that that’s going to positively hold him at Georgia. If someone comes a knocking with a head coaching job, Richt isn’t going to stand in his way. However, I think Grantham’s personality lends itself more to a defensive coordinator than a head coach where always being pc is mandatory. Stay a DC and he’ll have a long successful career. I Concur and so does about 1 Million Georgia Fans. See Richt when this many people are together on something POSITIVE then that should tell you that youre on the RIGHT TRACK.
Todd Grantham is a gem of a DC and has done nothing short of miracolous with improving Georgia’s Defense,
You didnt go to Miami with him, he didnt go to the same church as you did, he wasnt connected connected to Vince Dooley and all those politics that rule sports at UGA.
See Richt when you seperate Personal from Business then these are the results. Grantham didnt need any help in landing the job at UGA, You wasnt pressured into hiring him with the elitists.
This guy actually worked his way up and actually took a step back in taking the job at Georgia.
Bobo on the other hand is one hit wonder.
He was never made to be an OC and after 6 years thats proof enough. You promoted him because of politics at Georgia and should have told them to take a flying leap. Who’s in control here? What matters most is results and there arent any.
3 Million fans are telling you and Georgia after 3 years to get rid of this enigma and send him on his way.
This isnt personal, its business.
Could Bobo coach at Alabama and/or LSU as OC?
God gave you the sense to decide things based on logic, common sense and thru prayers. Any NCAA Football program that has setbacks tend to look at why they are occuring and this is as obvious as the tip of your nose.
Its not personal, its business………….now go do the right thing and quit ignoring the obvious. Bobo will do fine working at some small college, his life isnt over. As far as McGarity goes……i hope he can someday grow a pair and pay those coaches better without Richt having to do give them money.
It says alot about how cheap the university is and since 1980 college tuition has gone up 1000%.

25 LOSSES last 6 seasons

Quit with the EXCUSES about Aaron Murray.

He hasn’t gotten the job done in LEADERSHIP on or off the field. He most assuredly has been a complete and utter no-show against teams you know full-well end the season in the top 25.

0-9. His 56 Sacks, 21 Fumbles, 22 Interceptions, and 11 Losses in just 27 Games Started (41 percent of his games he started LOST) are very clear. Comparing him to Matthew Stafford’s SACKS, FUMBLES, INTERCEPTIONS AND LOSSES, does not make Aaron Murray GREAT. These were the SAME EXACT areas Matthew Stafford were HORRID IN, and remain HORRID IN IN THE NFL.

Now, you can lay the blame for this at the feet of Mike Bobo and Mark Richt all you want, but the facts are, had AARON MURRAY not gone out single-handedly and THROWN AWAY THESE GAMES, Todd Grantham’s Defense would have been FAR BETTER THAN IT ACTUALLY WAS, WHICH WAS – EXTREMELY BETTER THAN THE OFFENSE BECAUSE OF AARON MURRAY’S FUMBLES, INTERCEPTIONS AND SACKS.

We could not get anything going on offense, and the main culprit was Aaron Murray.

Just answer yourself these questions, how about it ?
(1) Can he run the football as a college quarterback with 174 rushes for 269 yards and 21 fumbles in 27 games ? No excuses, just answer the question.
(2) Can he accurately throw the football with 22 Interceptions in 27 games, while 56 times taking sacks holding the football too long, not wanting to throw the ball away to make his passing statistics look worse than they already are, which are by the way barely even 60 percent completions and way under 60 percent if you consider a SACK an INCOMPLETION which MOST OF THEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN holding the ball too long. He overthrows receivers, and he throws behind receivers, he also has balls tipped at the line. Quit making excuses and just answer the question, can he accurately throw the football ?
(3) Can you hand him the ball, the game on the line, against a team you I and the world knows ends up in the top 25 and expect him to take the ball down the field and direct the offense for the win ? No excuses; it’s ok to say, no you do not believe you can count on him in these situations to do that.
(4) Would you say his mechanics including footwork, going through his progressions, not staring down receivers, happy feet, and decision making under pressure are close to being good, even ?
(5) Do you believe that he will ever play in the NFL ?
(6) Are you SATISFIED LOSING 41 percent of the games he has started ?

________________________________________________
Pretty funny stuff CRO-MAGNON MAN. Actually, I got THAT GAME RIGHT in my bowl pool as ALREADY POINTED OUT TO YOU. You think I was taking Georgia against Michigan State, given what Aaron Murray has ACTUALLY DONE against the 9 teams now he has played who you knew BEFORE the game would end up in the top 25 for the season ?

Your mama might have raised such a fool, but mine most assuredly did NOT. It is the 1st time in the bowl pool I have picked against Georgia. I sat there long and hard, and asked myself did I want to put myself in that situation ? I want the Bowl Pool. I won the Bowl Pool last year.

The difference between you and I is that I played the game. I wanted desperately to win the game; I repeated that statement since the BLOW-OUT LOSS in the LAST GAME. I am NOT A HOMER. Not by any stretch of the imagination could ANYONE EVER hang that one around my neck. I call it like it is. I realize that while college quarterbacks feature the ability to run the ball, our quarterback DOES NOT, and that he is a HUGE BIG DRAG on the running game, stealing 8 carries a game EVERY GAME ALL 27 GAMES of which he has LOST 11 for 41 percent of his Starts LOST for a grand total of 1 yards per carry 8 carries a game 27 games to study, about half of which I saw up-close and personal.

I know we don’t coach the kid well.

I also know that he has the heebie-jeebies in the games against the teams you yourself know would end up top 25.

Cold hard facts. I figured he would THROW THE GAME AWAY. I said he would THROW THE GAME AWAY. He THREW THE GAME AWAY BY HIMSELF. He needed no help. He was abysmal.

The OTHER QUARTERBACK on the other team, head-to-head on the field, out-performed him in every aspect of the game and will go on to the NFL as a DIRECT RESULT THEREOF.

You are just hurt that I can say that I knew, and then aggravates you that I was SPOT-ON on my observations that he WOULD, and DID.

I don’t root against the guy. He just ISN’T AN ATHLETE. I blame the coaches for NOT TEACHING HIM AFTER 27 GAMES, and for PUTTING ONLY HIM IN EVERY GAME NO MATTER WHAT.

Put someone ELSE in the games, every game, all season long : Hopefully, that person will be Christian LeMay next season. And, then, you judge for yourself, is Christian LeMay a BETTER COLLEGE QUARTERBACK with BETTER NFL POTENTIAL than Aaron Murray.

I won my bet. Did you ?

Why waste Charles and Bennett when 6-8 yard down and outs and slants across the middle keep the LBs from cheating up and blitzing every down. A dump pass for 6 yards on 1st down is as good as running into the teeth of the 5th best D in the country.Even Ray Charles could see the dumbass play calling near the end of the game.

You want to know who really would have been great for us this season ?

05-TB Dontavius Jackson – would be RJr transferred to UAB

At Georgia, we never played him. He was a 1st class running back who would have instantly been a STAR. He would have won the game aginst Michigan State for us, because then Aaron Murray wouldn’t have had to try to do too much himself up 16-0 with then all his sacks, fumbles and interceptions.

He would have been able to play when EVERY RUNNING BACK ON SCHOLARSHIP was SUSPENDED for FAILING THE NCAA DRUG TEST.

Here is the story for those who forgot.

VANCE ERVIN CUFF essentially PURCHASED the alcohol for the 7, 6 of whom were arrested at the scene for underage drinking.

Branden Smith actually purchased the alcohol, and he used VANCE ERVIN CUFF’s Driver’s License to do so.

Dontavius Jackson was driving because TAVARRES KING asked him to drive TAVARRES KING’S Chevrolet Avalanche. It is Tavarres King’s vehicle. Duped and conned into driving by Tavarres King, who is obviously SMARTER than Dontavius Jackson.

Whatever suspension from football games therefore Dontavius Jackson receives from Coach Richt, ALSO MUST APPLY to TAVARRES KING.

And, we have NOT heard the last of this Branden Smith and NOT heard the last of this VANCE ERVIN CUFF.

CUFF is a senior and he provided his license to Branden Smith, which caused ALL THESE ARRESTS and suspended license notices.

25 LOSSES last 6 seasons

January 7th, 2012

How can you tell they weren’t SEC caliber ? The 7 running backs Mark Richt did recruit, were either kicked-off, flunked-out, arrested and suspended for whole seasons or most of a season (6 games anyway), just up and quit and transferred, were suspended 2 and 3 times each this year included, or never allowed to really play at all ?

All we do know is that it is Aaron Murray who has STOLEN SEVEN (7) carries a game every game all 27 games the last 2 years (losing 41 percent of the games 11 losses) averaging 1 yards a carry all 27 games to-date with 21 fumbles.

THAT IS NOT A COLLEGE QUARTERBACK

That is not an Athlete.

The problem remains that Mike Bobo is abysmal at play-calling. So much so that at least half this blog’s posters cannot even say that Mike Bobo actually calls the plays when he is the OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. Further, no one ever discusses the FACT that Aaron Murray comes to the line and ACTUALLY CALLS THE PLAY. He checks out of plays. He checks into other READS. Still NO ONE ON THIS BLOG ever says that Aaron Murray doesn’t read defenses well and checked out of or into the WRONG PLAYS.

The Offensive Coordinator at Georgia does not get the job done. Provided the talent we see who goes on to the NFL, and here since the inception with Mark Richt on OFFENSE, Mike Bobo hasn’t taught our Quarterbacks anything. None of them. Not Joe Tereshinski III, not Joe Cox, not Matthew Stafford, not Aaron Murray, not Hutson Mason, not Christian LeMay.

When they get into the games what his QBs do is get sacked, fumble, throw interceptions and have the average # 52 NCAA Total Offense ALL 11 SEASONS to-date of Mike Bobo’s work on Offense.

What we do on offense has NEVER WORKED.

Not ever.

Not 1 year.

Never.

Then, you run in here and state that the Running Backs are NOT SEC CALIBER that

MIKE BOBO
MARK RICHT

recruited here as the OC and Head Coach – both of who EVERY POSTER TO THIS BLOG attributes THEIR WORK ONLY on our Offense.

I saw enough of Dontavius Jackson to know that behind our Big OL, he would have been a huge benefit to us when all running backs recruited here by our Offensive Geniuses were ALL SUSPENDED (after the Florida game and their various multiple suspensions BEFORE the Florida game and should have been FOR THE FLORIDA GAME, TOO.)

We could have used the 30 players who were ALL GOOD RIDDANCE according to this blog.

NONE MORE SO, than 1 or more of the Running Backs they all said GOOD RIDDANCE TO.

Go ahead and keep Coach Grantham he has done an outstanding job. Georgia needs him and the players love his style of play. As far as Coach Bobo if he’s kept then it’s at qb coach and not offensive coordinator. Georgia needs Coach Richt to take over those duties or hire an outstanding offensive coordinator.

What about special teams for Coach Bobo since Georgia seems to want to keep him. I think he will be a good head coach some day but as of this time, he is over his head! If you keep him send him to Florida to talk with Coach Bowden and maybe to some other non-active sucessful coach to get advice.

If I were in charge, I would look at trying to hire Raheem Morris or Texas A.M. previous head coach as offensive coordinator. Look to he NFL or successful offensive coordinators that may be available in the college ranks. How about Herm Edwards!!!!!!

Congradulations to Coach Grantham !!! Hope he stays forever at Georgia!!GREAT JOB COACH!!!

“Thanks for pointing all that out Flat Tire… all I am saying is that if you and all these other people on here whine and complain about a 10 win season ”
*************************************************
Thanks, Chris, for those gems.

First, why would Richt change a thing? His new contract, promised by the AD, for beating 10 teams UGA should have beaten, validates his football program, basically gives Richt an expensive pat-on-the-back.

And secondly, Chris, congrats on your induction into the “10 WIN CLUB!” Sorry I can’t share the Club’s enthusiasm – I watched the games, and know who those 10 teams were, and I tend to get disappointed when we lose games we shouldn’t.

But now, I’ve got 4 or 5 more years to try to conform. Who knows, in a couple of years, maybe I’ll be applauding at the tv after a bowl loss, fighting back tears of pride, at yet another, glorious, 10 win season.

Will that be enough to get me in the 10 WIN CLUB?

What difference does it make? 2012 schedule shows 4 losses: Missouri, South Carolina, Florida, Auburn. If you can’t coach up with the talent you get each year on the field, then have the AD fenagle a wimp of a competitive schedule off the field…..HEY give the AD a raise and Extension for what he just pulled off for avoiding LSU and/or Alabama……Looking at the 2012 schedule looks more like the WAC conference…..Im just saying…….

I do not want to hear any inkling that Bobo might be back next year. If he is back in any capacity at all, it better not be as OC. They need to lock Grantham down simply for the fire he possesses. Its a counter-weight to Richt’s stoic nature and we badly need that fire. I want Richt as our HC but when he decides that he is finished, I would not mind TG as HC at all. I believe he would get a real a-kicking SOB OC if he were the HC.

Don’t believe we get to the Dome this year. Those road games to SC and Mizzu will almost certainly both be losses, but we should take care of UF and AU, thanks to Grantham’s D.

Our QB is too nervous in national TV games like Mizzu, SC and any bowl game to lead us to victory.

Probably our 3rd bowl loss in a row at the Capital One or Outback.

So 10-3.

I’ve read a couple of places where Hutson Mason will probably leave soon to go play for the Evil Genius. Looks like Hutson will finally, finally get a chance to put on a show in Sanford Stadium, in ‘13.

Total points allowed can’t be credited to Grantham. You can put a lot of it in the hands of Sir Murray and his picks as well as his fumbles. Grantham is most deserving! I hate to see where the DAWGS would be without him this year! Boo Boo could help him out a lot by calling better plays! Grantham does his job! The DAWGS need a Coordinator who can do theirs!!

Right, bubba4, not to mention fake punts for TDs, punts returned for TDs, etc. Also not accounted for is the number of times the fumbles, returns and fakes, and INTs are run back deep inside our own 20 yd line. SC, UF and LSU come to mind.

In the Outback Bowl, UGA was up 27-20 with 2 minutes left ! The defense allowed an approx 95 yard drive for a TD ! My complaint for this year (offense) was lack of a running game. UGA’s defense was very good, but not great. They had one good game of running the ball and that was Auburn ! To me this falls on Mark Richt ! If he is convinced he has right personel then he needs to fix running game.

Irving at 07:52,

I am not sure you get how a conference runs as far as scheduling goes. The UGA AD doesn’t control who UGA plays in the SEC. The SEC decides who is paired up with each other. The Alabama switch out was determined to be the best way of preventing Missouri from having to travel so much in the first year in the league. UGA didn’t have anything to do with it, anymore than the rest of the conference schedule. If you can’t understand about the schedule, I think perhaps you need to brush up on it.

Bob, I think you said it best. UGA basically beat no one this season and we are congraulating Ga.’s AD for extending TG’s contract. The fact is Ga. will struggle next season under CMR, due to CMR’s refusal to upgrade the program by getting rid of BoBo and hiring a special teams coach. CMR should have seen as early as last season he had a problem (no field goal kicker) but he did nothing about it.

Ga beat the teams that were not very good this past season and look terrible against teams that were good. Another bowl lost. Watching the bowl game was horrible. Ga. only up by one score ran dumb offensive plays and went to a prevent defense with over two minutes left in the game. MS went right down the field and was at Ga’s eight yard line with a minute left in the game.

Is this smart coaching? or an example of a team that will be playing for the National Championship this year?

It’s amazing to me how people always point out how many points UGA averages with Bobo as OC. That doesn’t mean anything if you don’t score enough points at the right time to beat teams. Our offense has never been consistent since Bobo has been the OC — it will start runnning the ball well at one point and then Bobo decides to throw it three times and we have to punt. Our DC deserves a longterm contract and a raise — he is better than Kirby Smart and he has coached in the NFL. If it had not been for the defense this year, do you think UGA really would have won 10 games in spite of Bobo?

McGarity is the problem now. If he gives Richt and Bobo extentions, then he is accepting mediocrity at UGA. Richt and Bobo have shown their offense is the most predictable offense in the SEC now. All the coordinators in the SEC know what Bobo is going to run in the red zone, they have been seeing it for 5 years now. That is why UGA is so pathetic in the red zone as it relates to scoring T.D’s, especially against the better defenses in the conference. If McGarity thinks Richt is going to take this program to the top 5 or 10 in the country, then he isn’t looking at the same games as everyone else. The play calling in the first qtr of the bowl game after the safety was the most pitiful calls i have ever seen UGA had a chance to put the game away early, but failed as usual. And for the 50th time, why run Thomas up the gut. On the first drive when UGA was inside the redzone, bobo ran Brandon Smith to the outside, he got 9 yards, then UGA gets stuffed on 3 plays running up the middle. Didn’t see Smith run outside with his speed the rest of the game. That is all you need to know about Bobo. UGA had a superior advantage with speed at receiver and with Smith and Boykin in the back field, but Bobo didn’t realize it. Hell even Herbstreet on Espn was talking about UGA’s superior speed at the skill positions. One last thing about bobo and richt. All these pathetic clowns talked about after Cox left, was that the next q.b. would have to prove he can protect the football, that was the priority in deciding who would get the starting job. What happened to that mentality???? Typical B.S. from these losers. Murray is the worst Q.B. in the RIcht era when it comes to protecting the football, and he will wind up with the best stats of any of the Q.B’s under Richt. It proves that all Richt and Bobo care about are stats, and so do the UGA fans. All they talk about are Murray’s yards and T.D’s. Proves that STATS are for losers. that includes RIcht, Bobo, and any UGA fan that drink their cool-aid

So let me get this straight. You go out and hire a proven talent, pay him the 2nd best contract in FBS and your defense climbs to the 3rd best in the country in two years. On the other side of the ball you hire a 2nd string QB, from the grad assistant pool, pay him peanuts and your offense has sucked hind teet ever since. Now I have to ask. Is there a Sandusky event going on or are you (we) just stupid?

Montez Robinson got away with a whole lot more, beating up his girlfriend the 1st time, than should have been allowed, and far less worse offenses by other players Mark Richt kicked them off the team for. When Montez Robinson then beat up her car, again, Mark Richt did not kick him off the team. The 3rd offense, picking her up and repeatedly slamming her into the floor at McWhorter Hall, beating her or her car up for the 3rd time he was arrested for, finally then Mike Bobo and Mark Richt went to the jail and visited Montez Robinson. After that, they did throw him off the team. Way too late, in my humble opinion as it was all going on, and showed NO DISCIPLINE that it was ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR each and every time. She was a itty-bitty student in good standing at The University of Georgia he did this to.

This one stands out to me, at contract negotiation time, as well.

What doesn’t stand out in my mind is what Todd Grantham did after the Vandie game. What stands out about that, is what MARK RICHT DID calling his own player, a Scholarship player in GOOD STANDING at The University of Georgia a DUMB___, AND THEN APOLOGIZING for the ____curse word, leaving still today the DUMB portion of his statement – multiple statements by Mark Richt DURING and AFTER the incident caused by the fiery Vandie coach.

DISCIPLINE must be PART OF THE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS.

I am not saying the choke sign by Todd Grantham was not incorrect on his part, but it was in the heat of the moment and about on-par with the Florida players have done in THAT GAME IN JAX EVERY SINGLE YEAR FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS. I am not excusing it, but it doesn’t need to be brought up by Chip Towers in my opinion at ALL in EITHER case while we tack on 3 years to Todd Grantham at what better be as much as Alabama pays their DC about $ 850,000 for Kirby Smart.

We send all the wrong kind of signals, in my opinion. Todd didn’t do anything wrong in my opinion. Slight hiccup on choke, and NOT WORTH MENTIONING on that, either.

Why don’t we say something in contract negotiations for Todd Grantham about the Florida players DOING THEIR GATOR CHOMP ON THE FIELD AFTER A POSITIVE PLAY, or their POLITE LADY-LIKE HAND-CLAPPING when Matthew Stafford got YANKED and the back-up finally scored in 2008 ?

The Arkansas-KState game just ended and the announcers wound up the broadcast by saying the difference in the teams was toughness. That’s SEC football in a nutshell. When KState made their run, the Arkansas defense stiffened. When Michigan State, Boise, and LSU made their run, the UGA defense caved. If you can play great defense in the first half, you can play it in the second half … if you’re tough enough. Yes there is improvement, but the jury is still out on Grantham. What we need is a tough minded coach as head coach. Richt’s mild manner seems to make the team docile.

Chris is right about the offensive game plan executed by Auburn in the Chick-Filet bowl. It was a beautiful thing to watch. I would be careful about a long term contract for Grantham. I think it’s premature. Truth is that in every game we lost, we did score enough points to win True the offensive ineptness especially in the second half contribute to this the other side’s points … but a tough SEC defense should hold up whenever and for how long they are on the field. Arkansas’s defense won their game by blunting the run KState made at them. At UGA we did do that against the teams that beat us.

I’m Sorry but any defensive coordinator that blows coverage calls in the second half of a Bowl Game allowing a Big-10 team to come back and tie an SEC Team does not deserve to keep his job much less have it extended. I am still at a loss for the stupidity of ‘Man’ coverage being called when MSU was being forced to throw to get back in the game. I have never been so embarrassed and humiliated as when UGA allowed an inferior team to defeat them like that on national TV. If I had my way about it they would clean out the entire coaching staff and find one that knew how to coach and win in true SEC fashion. To be the only SEC team to lose to a Big-10 school is unforgivable!!!

Some people kill me talking about the defense. You want to sustain long drives on offense to keep the defense fresh!! Also when the offense gives fumble 6 and pick 6 that the defense has no control over!! CTG is the real deal!!!!! The defense is the ONLY reason UGA won 90% of the games this year!!! The reason the defense gave up so many points and yards in the last two games is because the offense isn’t doing their job. If the offense could ATLEAST take a couple minutes off the clock for the defense to rest it would be a different story but the offense can’t even get a first down against a middle of the road team

Mr. McGarity does not appear to be concerned about losing Bobo, But then why should he? His refusal to discuss any extension for Bobo could be good news for those fans who feel Bobo is the main reason for the failure of the offense and Murray to score when under pressure. We could see a new OC in Athens.

Muschamp is in talks with Boise State’s OC, so the timing of the Grantham announcement is perfect.

We Gators are very pleased with your choice of coaches, and look forward to our built-in advantage for many years to come!

WDE = “wildly delusional expectations.”

Georgia is not an elite program, folks. You do not have the natural recruiting base of FL, which will keep you behind the Gators 8 years out of every 10. Even today with FL rebuilding and UT near death, you are looking up at South Carolina – the only East team with any real teeth in 2012.

Your best asset is that gawdawful schedule.

You beat exactly 2 barely ranked teams in 2011 and are now “knocking on the door of greatness.”

To you and your dream team…. keep dreaming.

When was it ever said, or made fact, that UGA was an elite program? As a UGA alum, I have never viewed us as being that. Elite programs are Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, USC, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc. These are the schools where most of the high school kids (nationally) want to play. They have history of winning NCs & they are steeped in tradition.

That being said, those railing against UGA as being mediocre screams of a lack of perspective. While UGA is not an elite program – they are a WINNING program. UGA has been to more consecutive bowls over the past 25 years than some of the schools listed above. I’m proud of our 10 win season this year & hope that we can do the same next year. Granted, we are not on par with the depth of talent at Alabama or LSU at the moment, but I am proud to be playing in the best conference in the country.

McGarity did not say he wasn’t going to deal with BoBo . He said that Bobo and the other coaches are on ONE year contract’s. McGarity hates giving anything more than one year at a time to anyone except the head coach. McGarity wasn’t in on Grantham’s first three year contract. McGarity has been told that a lot of recruit’s are asking if Grantham be around past 2012 so McGarity know’s how important it is for the defensive recruit’s to know that Grantham will be around their entire time at Georgia so he reluctantly is working on a 3 year extension for Grantham.
Grantham will sign one or two more extension’s, he is only 45 year’s old. At that time I think he will be ready for a head coaching job , which is what he want the most.

@ Overrated your an idiot I don’t care how good your defense is you can’t around a whole game when your offense is getting blown up all the time (i.e. Tim Tebow beating the the #1 ranked steelers defense) and you can’t hang the SC win on the D all their points came from special teams and defensive scores. If I’m not mistaken they scored 1 touchdown on offense thanks to their D setting them up on a short field. Same thing in SEC title game LSU hung around thanks to drop balls and terrible play on the offense the 1st half of that game LSU had less than 50 yards of offense. Same thing M. State the offense couldn’t establish the run so M. States offense just pinned their ears back and blitzed every freakin play. The only way we could score was on quick strikes which we all know tempo is how you keep your D in the game oh and coaching lost that game trust Blair Walsh after the crappy year he had give me a break.

HEY, MAYBE ONE OF US COULD BE AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR BECAUSE I’M ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT A NORMAL FAN KNOWS HOW TO CALL THE PLAYS AS GOOD AS BOBO AND I’M SURE HIS PAYCHECK IS ALOT HEALTHIER THAN MOST. JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE A PRIOR QUARTERBACK DOESN’T MAKE YOU AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. BOBO HAS BEEN GIVEN AMPLE TIME TO HONE HIS SKILLS BUT REFUSES TO PULL THE TRIGGER WHEN NEEDED. SPREADING THE BALL AROUND IS GOOD IF EVERYONE IS WORKING TOGETHER, BUT THAT IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE THE GAME STARTS. FIND YOUR PLAYMAKERS AND LET THEM MAKE PLAYS, I.E. VINCE DOOLEY (GAVE IT TO HERSHAL, EVERYONE KNOWS ITS COMING BUT HE STILL MADE THE PLAY TIME AND TIME AGAIN)!!!!!!!

Who is responsible for Bobo? Richt or McGarity..in terms of “termination”—or demotion. UGA went down hill as soon as Richt turned over play calling to Bobo. Why doesn’t Richt see this and go back to calling plays. I’ve been told that Bobo does not call anything Richt has not “pre-approved”…but still, if we are relying on Bobo’s judgement for ANOTHER YEAR…we’ll have a failed Offense that does nothing more than run “up the middle on 3rd and 20…..yeah, smart call Bobo

As long as UGA keeps the DB coach Scott Lakatos : Grantham’s defense will look good and perform well. I was very impressed with the DB play this year. It just came down to UGA not able to match up to both Boise, LSU and Mich state in the D line when they were facing massive grade A beef in those teams dominant offensive lines.

If u take away all the ints, fumbles, kick and punt ret for tds the defense only gave up like 15 points a game and thats not counting all the turnovers inside the redzone that most of the time we still held them to a fg

@South Ga. DawG:

What position did you play???? Bobo was a damn good QB and you are correct that does not make him a damn good OC but Bobo is not the HC.CMR is and it is CMR’s responsibility to see that his OC and DC get things done the way CMR wants. If Bobo isn’t carrying out CMR’s instructions/wishes then CMR should take action to see that it is done or send Bobo packing/demoted because of insubordination. CMR could override any Bobo call so either CMR is okay with Bobo’s calls or isn’t paying attention. If CMR doesn’t tell Bobo to do differently how the hell does Bobo know to do differently? I agree that something should be done but it improved the latter part of the 2011 season. Bobo is a damn good recruiter but CMR needs to handle the situation regardless of whether or not Bobo remains OC.
Vince Dooley coached how many years??? and gave the ball to Herschel(not Hershal) every play. Herschel was only there 3 years so I guess that’s why CMR’s won/loss record beats Dooley’s HC record to hell and back.
Yes you would decide ahead of time(before the game starts)which receivers will be open so you can spread the ball around????????????????????????? You have got to be one of the SMARTEST football analyst ever. If you got any balls at all you would drive over to Tuskalooser and apply for Saban’s job………………….tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
