McGarity: Outback Bowl loss won’t impact negotiations with Richt

Georgia’s loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl will have no impact on contract negotiations between UGA and football coach Mark Richt, which remain at least “three to four weeks” away from completion, according to Athletic Director Greg McGarity.

Georgia AD Greg McGarity said the Bulldogs' overtime loss to Michigan State did nothing to change his opinion on the direction of the football program under coach Mark Richt. (UGA photo)

“We plan to meet as soon as we can get together,” McGarity said Wednesday. “But I don’t see anything, certainly not a signed document, anytime soon. We’ll start the process of digging into the details of our extension and it will be determined in the near future.”

McGarity also urged fans upset over the Bulldogs’ 33-30, triple-overtime loss to the Spartans to keep the defeat in perspective.

“Blair Walsh kicks a 42-yard field goal and we’re sitting here feeling great about ourselves,” McGarity said. “But would we have solved our running game problem? No. Would that have solved them being able to go on an 85-yard drive with no timeouts? No. So, I mean, the dynamics haven’t changed. It’s not going to matter diddly-squat when we start lifting weights in three weeks. If anything it’ll add more incentive for next year.”

Georgia lost back-to-back games — including a loss to LSU in the SEC Championship game — to finish the 2011 season 10-4. Richt, 51, is 106-38 heading into his 12th year as the Bulldogs’ coach.

McGarity said there is no rush to complete a new deal with Richt, who has two years remaining on an employment agreement that pays him $2.81 million annually. Including bonuses and outside income from endorsements, Richt earns more than $3 million a year.

Richt is expected to receive an extension of at least three years, which would keep him as the Bulldogs’ coach through December of 2016. McGarity said he and Richt already agreed in principle when they met last month.

“This is an important recruiting time and I told Mark after the SEC Championship game that he could go to these high school kids and tell them he’s going to be their head coach,” McGarity said. “We felt it was very important to send out the message that we haven’t worked everything out but Mark’s going to be our coach. That was the immediate need, to go ahead and address the future of our program. But we didn’t get into any details or anything like that that’s kind of where we left it. He wants to be here and we want him to be here.”

Any renegotiation is unlikely to include a significant pay raise for Richt, however. Richt is sixth among SEC coaches in compensation but that ranks No. 11 nationally. Alabama’s Nick Saban ($4.8 million), LSU’s Les Miles ($3.75), Auburn’s Gene Chizik ($3.5), Arkansas’s Bobby Petrino ($3.1) and South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier ($2.88) currently make more than Richt.

“Longevity is the first priority and then compensation would follow,” McGarity said.

McGarity said he has received about 50 emails in the wake of Georgia’s loss this past Monday. He said “about half” of those fans complained about coaching decisions made as the Bulldogs let a 16-0 at halftime lead slip away. Michigan State scored a touchdown with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 27-all and send it into overtime.

Walsh missed a 42-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game in the first overtime, then had a 47-yard attempt blocked in the third OT.

“Any time you lose a game, especially one as gut-wrenching as that one was, people get frustrated and they vent in various ways,” McGarity said. “If the game was lopsided, if we had lost 42-0 or something, then there would be some concerns. But to point the finger at a player or a coach or offense or defense or special teams is a waste of time. That was a true team loss. There are plenty of second guessers out there, but there are so many what-ifs on either side it could have gone either way.”

What McGarity hasn’t heard is enough credit being given to the Spartans, who recorded back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history.

“What I have not seen in one email is anyone giving any credit to the Michigan State team, and that’s very unfortunate because they made the plays they needed to win the game,” McGarity said. “The first thing you should do when you get beat is give the other team credit, because they’re working just as hard as you are. Kirk Cousins, look what he did in the last two minutes of the game with no timeouts. That was pretty impressive, as was the way they defended us in the second half. Unfortunately people never give the opponent any credit.”

McGarity said it’s important that Georgia fans rally behind the team, which he thinks has a chance to do some great things next season.

“We go from 6-7 to 10-4 and we’re looking forward to 2012,” McGarity said. “We’ve got a lot of kids coming back, a great nucleus and a great group of leaders. There’s a segment of our fans that want to play the blame game. But when you have a loss like that, everybody shares in it. I’m sure everybody on that field felt like they if they could have done something differently, coaches and players, we might not have lost the game. But that’s just part of the deal.

“What is important is for people to know that Mark Richt is our football coach, and he and his staff and these players spend so much time in an effort to bring championship football to Georgia. . . . The more negative people become, the more it distracts you from being successful.”

NOTES: Georgia’s annual G-Day spring football game has been set for April 14. No other spring practice dates have been set. . . . Junior noseguard John Jenkins sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder late in the Outback Bowl. However, the injury is not expected to require surgery and he will be available for spring practice. . . . Freshman wide receiver Chris Conley will undergo wrist surgery this month. . . .Redshirt freshman tailback Ken Malcome suffered a concussion early in the fourth quarter against Michigan State and did not play the rest of the game.

Why do ppl keep saying this stupid comment. How dumb are you.? Look up who makes the schedule, then look up all other SEC schools OOC games.

After that feel free to sit in the corner till you learn to look things up before posting.

We woulda got our shot in ‘07 if we hadn’t got beat by inferior SC or UT. Lose games we shouldn’t lose. Just like ‘02, and even ‘05.

Richt won’t ever get us there, because he always loses games he shouldn’t.

Summation:

1. McGarity is sold on Richt and the direction of the program.
2. McGarity stops just short of saying, this loss matters very little in the grand scheme of things.
3. It doesn’t sound to me, like McGarity will force Richt’s hand on any staffing issues.

Agree? Disagree? Additional summations?

Completely disagree. It sounds like he already knows his next move which will be to make staff changes to the assit. coaches. He all but guarantees that Bmac is gone after signing day. Bobo stuff will be in the extension, has to be. If it isnt then we are in trouble. But I have faith in McGarity to get it right.

TampaDawg, Regarding your “one player wonder” coaches list (11:16), Matt Stafford just became only the 5th QB in NFL history to pass for more than 5,000 yards in one season, with 40+ TDs.
——————————
Very true, but that is the NFL. Funny but look at what he is doing in the NFL versus all the guys I mentioned earlier (this is not a Richt praise or bash). I think the biggest problem with Richt/Bobo as a whole is that they don’t throw a saddle on some of these guys and let them carry the game. Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow, Vince Young, Maurice Clarette were all superstars in college who carried the game for their teams and look what they are doing/did in the NFL. I don’t think Stafford was in that class of college players maybe because he didn’t get the chance to just go after it.

Bulldog59, 1 & 2 I agree with. #3 I hope he doesn’t let it go as it is. We need to get a change on the offensive side of the ball. If not Richt stepping back in to call plays with Bobo getting demoted to QB coach or assistant OC, then somebody new. I don’t see how McGarity can sit there and watch our talented team try to run a 5′9″ RB up into the MSU D-line three times with 3:30 to go in the game with MSU calling timeouts and challenging calls. Or how he can sit there and watch as we let our 50/50 PK try one from 42 yards out, WITHOUT the offense even trying to get a first down. OR how he can sit there and watch our offense NOT EVEN ATTEMPT a first down in OT. As AD I certainly hope that he doesn’t let that slide.

@ Joey, I totally agree with you. I can’t believe UGA is rewarding failure.

McGarity says to keep it in perspective… Ok, how about?… our record against top 25 teams the last 3 years: 3 Wins and 15 Losses. That’s a 17% winning percentage… When’s the last time we went to a major BCS bowl? 2008 Sugar Bowl… When’s the last time we won an SCG? 2005. When’s the last time we won a football national title?… Now, what has the rest of the SEC done in the meantime? Win national championships. Why is UGA so ok with being average? We’re not going anywhere with the kind of gut-less play-calling we’ve called lately. It appears the solution we came up with is to play the weakest schedule that we can play and hope we don’t botch that. LSU and Alabama are not getting any weaker in the years to come. We’re gonna keep getting our @sses handed to us at the SCG.

McGarity, please, at least demote Bobo.

Ohio State wow; they got tatoos they still are 18-22 year olds that Tressel took and won a NC and played for 2 more, what has Richt done with his players who have led the nation in player arrests since 2005 NOTHING. Oh and Tressel did beat his main rival consistantly

As for Pete Carol, Chizik Miles they took their players and won

Richt has ranked #2 in total recruiting behind USC and has put more players in the NFL than any other SEC school during his tenure.

Bottom line the talent has been there the coaching has not

And if you think UGA and other schools run a clean program your living on the moon bud

[...] point that no amount of fretting over philosophy will change who Mark Richt is, nor will the person making the decisions about Richt’s future and use of that philosophy make a change directly because of it. [...]

Appreciate ya! I like to keep things in perspective. Being honest, I have NOTHING personal against anyone on here because realistically, if I hinged my life and my attitude on what these kids did on a football field, there would be a lot of deeper issues in my life. I enjoy the banter on this thread since even though there are a lot of us that disagree, most of this has been purely football related and the silly, juvenile insults have been kept to a minimum. Mostly at least.

Georgia needs to reset it’s goals. We have the ability to recruit just as good of players as our elite SEC competitors, yet we continue to fall short of the grand prize. Could it be that we don’t set the bar high enough? Are we content with a SEC east trophy or are we pursuing a National Championship?
Does Nick Saban or Les Miles think SEC division titles are good enough or are they thinking of the bigger prize like playing the National championship. It is time to reassess our goals and that can only happen from the top. Are you listening McGarity?

An extension of Richt’s contract will signal the fan base, “we’re content with competing for division championships.” If Richt was going to challenge for a BCS title, he’d have done it by now. We look like a lock to only lose to SC next year. THey will have to play LSU and Arkansas. We slide by if Ark. beats them. Then again the Fla game was a lot closer than I thought it should have been, so maybe we end up tied and they get the tie breaker having whooped us. In the end it won’t matter, if we return to the SEC ch. we get crushed again in the 2nd half because no real fire in the bones after haft time. i.e. poor coaching

Tom In ATL

UGA just beat TN, FL, AU and GT in the same season since 1981. 30 freaking years. But that apperently means nothing – since they were all “terrible teams” and easy wins. Go ask South Carolina how easy it is to beat AU (who we beat 45-7). Go ask Ohio State what a push over FL is. For most of you complainers – unless your schedule consists of alternating weeks of UGA vs LSU and UGA vs Alabama – well – then no other game means anything. Lose in triple OT by a FG to the Big 10 team that had the best regular season record and lost the championship to Wisconsin in the final minute – oh yeah – they suck. UGA got beat up by LSU – guess what – Oregon got blown out by LSU at Home. So did West Virginia, so did Arkansas. The only team that played them close is playing them again in the National Title game – and rightfully so – those are the two best teams in college football this year. We aren’t. But it doesn’t mean we suck – and our Coach is an idiot. UGA sure gets alot of flack about an SEC schedule they don’t control – and a team that won 10 but lost 4 – all to top 12 teams – two by a FG.

You can sit there and demand UGA be as dominant as Bama or LSU – every team in America would love that. But they never have been – save for a 3 year run in the early 80’s – when they had Herschel. The past 10 years has been the most successful in the school’s history – but apparently that’s not good enough. OK – throw em all out – and start over –

Tell me WHO – specifically – would take this job and produce a string of undeafeated, national title teams – especially with the delusional fanbase that will tolerate nothing short of perfection – 100% of the time. It’s easy to armchair QB and complain losers – tell me how to get the results you demand. Or shut up – I’d settle for either.

Dont say you guys wouldnt have gave him a chance

And I stick to this point, many of you wouldn’t have given Mack Brown a chance to see year 8 (his NC year) if that was going on at UGA. 11 losses in his first three years, no conference titles, upset losses year after year. Heck in 2003 alone he was upset by unranked Arkansas and Wash State in the bowl game.

Thank you, Mr. Mcgarity. I have been saying the exact same thing. The FG attempt is 3′ more to the left and 2/3 of these comments are not even here. NOTHING changed. The opinion of Richt certainly should not have.

His tendencies(good or bad) are exactly the same today as they were 5 yrs ago, before that game, and in the secons before and after that ball left Walsh’s foot. He is what he is.

The ONLY thing that changed was a degree of purely emotiona lfan reaction for a little while.

And thoes fans who somehow now see it all so clear when the ball sailed right, to “change thier mind”, are about 20X more likely to change it all over again, once the emotions calm, than the rest of us who, while, disapointed , still see the same thing now that we saw before.
