Georgia’s loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl will have no impact on contract negotiations between UGA and football coach Mark Richt, which remain at least “three to four weeks” away from completion, according to Athletic Director Greg McGarity.

Georgia AD Greg McGarity said the Bulldogs' overtime loss to Michigan State did nothing to change his opinion on the direction of the football program under coach Mark Richt. (UGA photo)
“We plan to meet as soon as we can get together,” McGarity said Wednesday. “But I don’t see anything, certainly not a signed document, anytime soon. We’ll start the process of digging into the details of our extension and it will be determined in the near future.”
McGarity also urged fans upset over the Bulldogs’ 33-30, triple-overtime loss to the Spartans to keep the defeat in perspective.
“Blair Walsh kicks a 42-yard field goal and we’re sitting here feeling great about ourselves,” McGarity said. “But would we have solved our running game problem? No. Would that have solved them being able to go on an 85-yard drive with no timeouts? No. So, I mean, the dynamics haven’t changed. It’s not going to matter diddly-squat when we start lifting weights in three weeks. If anything it’ll add more incentive for next year.”
Georgia lost back-to-back games — including a loss to LSU in the SEC Championship game — to finish the 2011 season 10-4. Richt, 51, is 106-38 heading into his 12th year as the Bulldogs’ coach.
McGarity said there is no rush to complete a new deal with Richt, who has two years remaining on an employment agreement that pays him $2.81 million annually. Including bonuses and outside income from endorsements, Richt earns more than $3 million a year.
Richt is expected to receive an extension of at least three years, which would keep him as the Bulldogs’ coach through December of 2016. McGarity said he and Richt already agreed in principle when they met last month.
“This is an important recruiting time and I told Mark after the SEC Championship game that he could go to these high school kids and tell them he’s going to be their head coach,” McGarity said. “We felt it was very important to send out the message that we haven’t worked everything out but Mark’s going to be our coach. That was the immediate need, to go ahead and address the future of our program. But we didn’t get into any details or anything like that that’s kind of where we left it. He wants to be here and we want him to be here.”
Any renegotiation is unlikely to include a significant pay raise for Richt, however. Richt is sixth among SEC coaches in compensation but that ranks No. 11 nationally. Alabama’s Nick Saban ($4.8 million), LSU’s Les Miles ($3.75), Auburn’s Gene Chizik ($3.5), Arkansas’s Bobby Petrino ($3.1) and South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier ($2.88) currently make more than Richt.
“Longevity is the first priority and then compensation would follow,” McGarity said.
McGarity said he has received about 50 emails in the wake of Georgia’s loss this past Monday. He said “about half” of those fans complained about coaching decisions made as the Bulldogs let a 16-0 at halftime lead slip away. Michigan State scored a touchdown with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 27-all and send it into overtime.
Walsh missed a 42-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game in the first overtime, then had a 47-yard attempt blocked in the third OT.
“Any time you lose a game, especially one as gut-wrenching as that one was, people get frustrated and they vent in various ways,” McGarity said. “If the game was lopsided, if we had lost 42-0 or something, then there would be some concerns. But to point the finger at a player or a coach or offense or defense or special teams is a waste of time. That was a true team loss. There are plenty of second guessers out there, but there are so many what-ifs on either side it could have gone either way.”
What McGarity hasn’t heard is enough credit being given to the Spartans, who recorded back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history.
“What I have not seen in one email is anyone giving any credit to the Michigan State team, and that’s very unfortunate because they made the plays they needed to win the game,” McGarity said. “The first thing you should do when you get beat is give the other team credit, because they’re working just as hard as you are. Kirk Cousins, look what he did in the last two minutes of the game with no timeouts. That was pretty impressive, as was the way they defended us in the second half. Unfortunately people never give the opponent any credit.”
McGarity said it’s important that Georgia fans rally behind the team, which he thinks has a chance to do some great things next season.
“We go from 6-7 to 10-4 and we’re looking forward to 2012,” McGarity said. “We’ve got a lot of kids coming back, a great nucleus and a great group of leaders. There’s a segment of our fans that want to play the blame game. But when you have a loss like that, everybody shares in it. I’m sure everybody on that field felt like they if they could have done something differently, coaches and players, we might not have lost the game. But that’s just part of the deal.
“What is important is for people to know that Mark Richt is our football coach, and he and his staff and these players spend so much time in an effort to bring championship football to Georgia. . . . The more negative people become, the more it distracts you from being successful.”
NOTES: Georgia’s annual G-Day spring football game has been set for April 14. No other spring practice dates have been set. . . . Junior noseguard John Jenkins sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder late in the Outback Bowl. However, the injury is not expected to require surgery and he will be available for spring practice. . . . Freshman wide receiver Chris Conley will undergo wrist surgery this month. . . .Redshirt freshman tailback Ken Malcome suffered a concussion early in the fourth quarter against Michigan State and did not play the rest of the game.

Murray is the main reason we lost that game with 3 turnovers. Yet Richt will stick with him no matter what. Never gives anybody else a chance.
Walsh can’t hit the broad side of a barn, but Richt is the idiot that sent him out there, knowing damn well there was a 99% chance he was going to miss it.
Richt will continue to do bonehead things like that, so it’s going to be a long and painful journey until he’s gone.

The Death Spiral of UGA football began over 3 years ago. Think a 10 win season is good? We beat the worst teams around town and lost to average (SC) and good (Boise State) and great (LSU) teams.
I hardly think that is worth resigning Richt at any price.
But hey, I only played ball and coached at a much lower level so what the heck do I know!?
By the way Dawg Nation………It was pressure from us that caused Richt to unload Martinez and we have one of the finest DC in the country.
Richt seems umbilically tied to Bobo for some strange reason. Perhaps Bobo is just a puppet for Richt to use so he can easily overturn his playcalling (not a very Christian thing to do Bro Richt).
On the other hand maybe Richt really thinks Bobo knows what he’s doing……………………… that’s even worse than the first scenario!
McGarity’s thought process in this is almost incomprehensible unless he does indeed intend to wait until heavy recruiting and some major signing is over and then unload Richt.
I HOPE SO,

Which of the 25 teams did we in fact beat who all have a BETTER RECORD than Mark Richt’s 10-4 ?
When Mark Richt took over this football program 20 December 2000, he found The University of Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program # 11 in 1-A Wins. This 10-4 this season counts the same GAMES as does that LIST of 10 better than us. It counts FCS 1-AA. As for paper and we fans sitting here saying we are BETTER than this team or that team, excuse me the last 3 seasons, the only team we beat who ended up top 25 was # 13 Georgia tek in 2009.
You can redefine “GOOD” all you want when you are paid $ 291,000 a month total compensation, $3.5 million. But, when you do, someone invaribly will get out their DICTIONARY, look up the word “GOOD” and say, excuse me Mark Richt has FAILED.
There were 3 teams who end up top 10 LSU beat this season, already. Mark Richt has not beat a team who ends up top 10 since 2006, SIX (6) LONG SEASONS AGO. That season, he LOST 4 games including to 8-Loss Vandie.
17 other games in Mark Richt’s 11-seasons to-date, Mark Richt has LOST to a team who would not have ended up in the top 25 had they not beat Mark Richt. I consider us good when, like yourself, we don’t lose to these type teams, and when we DO BEAT top 10 teams.
Auburn, last season, beat 3 teams who ended up in the top 10.
Mark Richt in 11 seasons COMBINED, has beat a grand total of 3 teams who ended up in the top 10, and none in the last 6 seasons in which he has lost 25 games the last 6 seasons.
No. Mark Richt did NOT have a GOOD SEASON. He beat NO ONE who ends up in the top 25. He LOST to teams he should have beat : Boise State, Michigan State, South Carolina, and if we had a good season those SCORES would not have been what they are and neither by the way would be 10-42 in the paper SEC East Championship.
Speaking of SEC Championships, 2002, the only other SEC team finishing being ranked in the Coaches’ Poll top 25 was a 4-Loss Auburn. The SEC Was WAY DOWN.
2005, the only other “SEC Championship” for Mark Richt in 11 years, he ended up # 3 of just SEC Teams in EVERY SINGLE POLL.
You cannot sit here and say we were OR WOULD BE better than 9 other teams, when NOT ONE TEAM ON THE LIST OF 25 BETTER RECORDS THAN 10-4 FOR 2011-2012 did Mark Richt beat. He had his chances to beat such teams, 4 of them. He LOST ALL 4.
Oh, but I DREAM that if we replayed those 4 games, we’d win. Or, if we played 21 others of the 25 with BETTER than 10-4 this season, we’d beat them.
BASED ON WHAT ?

If McGarity is the guy I THOUGHT he was then this statement is prearranged with Richt as a delay so as to recruit and sign some quality players before Richt and his stable of “coaches” are relieved of duty (with the exception of our DC – but my guess is he will go elsewhere for bigger bucks and a winning HC to work for).
Am I giving McGarity too much credit DAWG NATION or will he act as a professional AD and make the tough decisions that he is being paid to make?

Great points. I think Richt is too much of a Christian to fire Bozo, I really do. Bozo has 6 kids at home and I don’t think he has the heart or the stomach to do it. As I said in an earlier post, you don’t have to fire him. Keep him as the QB coach, director of recruiting, whatever.
But look at the defense and the job Grantham has done. Those guys played lights out all year. We need this kind of coaching on the offensive side.
Yea, I agree about McGarity. He sounds clueless. Scary in fact with his undying support of Richt. I thought the guy was smarter than that. He sounds like a complete fool.

Is this assumption based upon the 55 sacks of Aaron Murray, the 40 percent of the games started that Aaron Murray has lost, the 1.3 yards per carry for 8 carries a game the entire career of Aaron Murray, or the 7 running backs run-off from this football program and what our 8th string running back with no Fullback recruited for 6 straight consecutive seasons running the ball for an Offensive Coaching Staff here for the last entire now 11 seasons who has AVERAGED the # 52 Total Offense all 11 years ?
Is the assumption that it is the fault of the OL based upon the 3 seniors of this OL who will end up in the NFL next season alone ?
Where do we get the notion that we can (1) DREAM UP EXCUSES for our sorry state, referred to by Aaron Murray as exciting and referred to as GOOD by Mark Richt and referred to as and yes I am happy with this season by True Dawg Fan ? Or (2) that the OL in fact cannot block ?

CMR = FINESSE. The Oline plays to merely shove their man in front of them, not destroy him. It works in the ACC where as we all know, is not much above the par of the Southern Conference. It ultimately hurts the D…physical offense translates into a physical defense. Our D apparently gets knocked a bit harder in games than they do in practice. Not hating, he is what he is. It just has its limits playing big boy football in what is the SEC…and Conf USA, and Big 12, and now apparently the Big 10.

Is McGarity a complete fool or is he playing it cool?
My gut tells me it’s the former but we will know for sure within a few weeks.
I can't believe Aaron Murray BLEW THAT GAME to go to 0-9 vs teams ending top 25. 3 sacks, fumble, 2 interceptions, 9 rushes minus 14 yards, 1 reception blocked pass minus 3 yards - all with 16 point lead.

Aaron Murray is to BLAME for the actual fact than in OVER 40 % of his Starts to-date, the OTHER QUARTERBACK ON THE OTHER TEAM, had a BETTER DAY, HEAD-TO-HEAD on the field than he.
11 of the 11 losses.
He walks to the line and has the last say at the line of scrimmage. At the worst possible moment in the worst possible games, he gets the heebie-jeebies. When do I get copied on that word ? Why am only I the one to use that word ?
DISNEYdawgs.com certainly caught on.
Not beat a team who ends up top 25 this season or last season certainly caught on at 0-9.
10-Win season when 25 other teams did BETTER than 10-4 with us beating NONE of the 25 this season certainly caught on.
I’d say a fair amount of what I say WAY BEFORE IT HAPPENS, has caught on fire across the wide Bulldog Nation reading the blogs of everyone as I do.
We, as The Bulldog Nation, are of ONE MIND this morning, this off-season, indeed this Mark Richt era that we have FAILED and that 25 LOSSES in 6 seasons is UNACCEPTABLE (When does that catch-on too 25 LOSSES over the last 6 seasons ?)

The real stats reveal UGA as a consistent losing team vs any quality opponent for the last few years.
The luck of a decimate Eastern Division SEC competition schedule is THE ONLY THING that saved Richt from another losing season.
Bama, Auburn, UT, UF nor LSU put up with this kind of thing.

I don’t think McGarity is playing us for a fool, I think he is the fool. When he says he likes the direction the program is going under Richt, what direction is he talking about? The status quo direction?? We have to ratch it up to get on the same level as Alabama and LSU. Yea, we may win 10-11 games next year and probably will win the East. But we will get hammered in the SEC Championship game. So the direction we are going is the same exact direction as this year, we are not moving forward.
If McGarity is intent on keeping Richt, we have to get a top notch OC and go hire a special teams coach for cying out loud. Don’t know if I can handle us falling for the fake punt every single time another team runs it on us. And a special team coach that will tell Richt that a 42 yard field goal is not a chip shot for a kicker that sucks.
So I hope McGarity is playing us for a fool, if not, the future looks even more bleak than I thought.

I heard he stayed in here all day long. I read Arkansas. I had such a hard time getting TRUE DAWG FAN to write a post where I could actually tell which 4 words were his own, that by the time he wrote a post I could tell which words were his own, he punched out and went home just before 5 pm.
Alabama ?
He said Mark Richt would have beat ALABAMA this year Lowcountry Bulldawg ?
Really ?
I love the quotes replying to AltamahawDawg about who said we are SATISFIED with 10-4 ?
Aaron Murray “EXCITED”
Mark Richt “GOOD SEASON 10-4″ In fact, Mark Richt also said “10-Win season is GREAT.”
Greg McGarity “Blair Walsh kicks a 42-yard field goal and we’re sitting here feeling great about ourselves,” Greg McGarity said. “I mean, the dynamics haven’t changed. It’s not going to matter diddly-squat when we start lifting weights in three weeks that we lost the game to Michigan State.”
True Dawg Fan : “And, yes I am happy with 10-4.”
But, True Dawg Fan said we’d beat Alabama this 2011 season ? I wish he would write a post where I could tell which words on that post were his own 4 words. I guess they are only the last 4 words to any of his posts; not sure about that; sometimes it might be 4 words embedded somewhere in the middle of his posts that are actually his 4 words. I don’t want to get confused on what True Dawg Fan actually does say, so until he learns how to put quotes around what he is quoting or something to know what 4 words are his, I do not read his posts. I skipped over it obviously. Darn.
He said that ?

The SEC teams have been taking turns thumping their Big 10 foes – until this past Outback Bowl. Of course, this is the same team that last year was beat by not only UCF, but Colorado. In ‘09, it was OK St whose pathetic D shut down our O and our D played soft instead of aggressively when they needed to. We saw this again on Monday. Two different coordinators, both having superior athletes, both had their Ds shutting down their opponent when being physical, and both Ds playing soft to permit the their opponents to move down field in crucial moments.

Let’s be painfully honest about the SEC East. It was weak this year. UGA backed into the SEC Championship game only because South Carolina, who beat UGA, lost to Arkansas. UGA plays a woeful Ole Miss team and an Auburn team that was without its herald qb, Scam Newton. Auburn crushes Viriginia in the chicken bowl. Big deal. UGA did not have to play Arkansas, Bama or LSU this year or next year. UGA opens up with Buffalo. Get real. The Dawgs will benefit form a soft schedule next year, too. Winning nine or 10 games this year was almost a given considering the weak East. But any intelligent observer will conclude that with an exception here and there, UGA is not a in the top tier of the SEC. Exhibit A: Florida. They’ve owned us for two decades. So we beat them this year. Big Deal. Look at the success Florida had under Spurrier and Meyer. Does anyone think they would have gone ultra-conservative the way Bozo, with Richt’s blessing, did? No. They play to win. Richt plays not to lose.
Mark Richt LIED to us about Power Rangers uniform telling us the PLAYERS LOVED THEM. Remember ? Chip Towers ran the article and you guys everyone of you bought into it.

Mark Richt lied when he told us he was the # 4 best football coach in all of America.
Mark Richt KNEW just as we did that IC said to everyone on the team that he FAILED THE DRUG TEST. He was TOLD. He also KNEW he did the drugs. He further knew he took the NCAA Drug Test which catches designer drugs. He knew it catches designer drugs. He knew before he filled the bottle in front of the NCAA Drug Testing Committee, that he had FAILED IT ALREADY. He knew when in the presence of the person he put it in the bottle in front of, when they BOTH then walked to the NCAA Room to meet with the Administrator of the NCAA Drug Testing, and then split the bottle to A and B samples, that he FAILED THE DRUG TEST. He got on the team bus and told his teammates. That too was reported here Friday AM, early. He no doubt told others as he WALKED OUT of the Drug Test. (1) They run tests RIGHT THEN. (2) They then test A. (3) If positive, then test B. As Phil said, B was not back. Greg McGarity is not putting his job on the line and Greg, as Phil correctly told you, said B was not back until Tuesday. Suspension Tuesday.
But, when did MARK RICHT KNOW ? Chip Towers asked him that.
Well, he KNEW before he ordered the test of ALL RUNNING BACKS, 3 of whom failed.
I knew.
You knew.
His high school came in here and told us all that before he was EVER RECRUITED HERE.
But, you ignore ALL THAT.
Phil hits the nail on the head.
Read Phil.
He is very easy to follow.
He calls it like it is.
I don’t trust Mark Richt as far as you can throw him. I know he has LIED time after time. I have run in here each time and told you.
“GOOD SEASON.” That’s a LIE.
Isn’t it ?
He did NOT lie that it was a FAILED DRUG TEST. He actually is GUILTY and IC could GET HIM for that. Get him big-time for THAT to Chip Towers.
Why ?
Why does IC still play here ?
I said 6 years ago that Caleb King would be the reason Mark Richt got fired, if he did. He certainly did his part.
Could be that it is IC.
He has done everything WRONG with IC from the time he SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL with his missing RB formation in recruiting.
Including and not limited to – NOT PLAYING IC VS FLORIDA.
A Coach can say to a player, you told these 15 men on the bus you FAILED THE DRUG TEST. Did you ? Yes, sir. Ok, do not dress out and you are not going to Florida.
THERE IS NO RULE THE HEAD COACH HAS TO PLAY IC.
Reuben Houston, Georgia tek played him the ENTIRE GAME against UGA after he ADMITTED TO THE AJ-C 93 lbs of drugs in the van he jumped and ran from on Georgia tek campus to get away from FBI, GBI, Fulton County, City of Atlanta, Campus Police and DEA. Georgia tek was under NO OBLIGATION TO PLAY REUBEN HOUSTON THE WHOLE ENTIRE GAME.
They did anyway. It is ALL they care about at Georgia tek, beating us – at ANY AND ALL COSTS.
Mortal Enemy.

Actually, he looks like the marionette, HOWDY DOODY.
He has gone about this ALL WRONG from the beginning.
And, it is WORSE NOW that he announces no decision until
ON OR ABOUT SIGNING DATE.
He is a poor tennis player here, who knows NOTHING about football; he played tennis and not well.

While we’re taking McGarity to task, let’s not forget His Lordship, Michael Adams. I submit that as long as UGA wins 9 or so games a year, wins the East once every five or six years and makes it to a decent bowl, he’ll take it. In the event UGA gets the opportunity to play in an BCS bowl, Adams will call it a great season. When you look at Saban’s record (two national championships at two SEC schools), and Meyer’s at Florida (won the big one early in his career with the Gators) and realize Richt has been at UGA for a decade and hasn’t come close to winning the big one, something tells me he’s not expected to.But if he does, great. Adams is more interested in turning UGA into a Stanford – not quiet Ivy League, but a great academic institution with competitive athletics. If Richt can maintain the status quo, so be it.

Michigan State was BETTER than us. Their QB when you looked at the clock and had the SEASON and CONFERENCE on -the-line and your career and future NFL at stake, lined-up and took the ball down the field and punched it in.
Aaron Murray has NEVER DONE THAT. In fact, he is 0-9 with 2 more losses to teams NOT EVEN FINISHING IN THE TOP 25.
Their kicker made the field goal. Blair Walsh. like Aaron Murray Loses 40 percent of his Starts here to-date, missed 40 percent of his field goals this year.
Their running backs, when the game mattered battered our remaining standing defensive worn out out of shape over-used remaining scholarship football players. Ours looked like what they were 8th string of what Mark Richt recruited here on Scholarship for 2011, which is exactly what they were and ARE.
Their WR made some really key plays utilizing their strength of their height against Branden Smith for example and Bacarri Rambo for another and Brandon Boykin for a 3rd and on and on and on.
Their OL gave up 1 sack all day to Jarvis Jones et al. Our OL gave up 4 “sacks” of Aaron Murray instead holding the ball too long, unable to see over their linemen and his own linemen, who for the most part did a lot better job of protecting Aaron Murray than Aaron Murray did of getting rid of the football on-target.
Our coaching staff up 16-0 obviously didn’t strategize our game plan to figure out what we did right to go up 16-0, and then did EVERYTHING WRONG to just TOTALLY GIVE IT ALL AWAY. Not Michigan State, us. We GAVE THE GAME AWAY.
We had no clue at coaching any aspect of the game. Michigan State had everything figured out to the tee, including using time-outs properly. And, what to tell their QB and offense.
MICHIGAN STATE WAS BETTER THAN US. Their fans are better than our fans too. I bet you go up there and read their struggles with mediocrity and there are more there telling it like it is, and their staff and LEADERS on their team saying they are
NOT SATISIFIED
NOT GOOD SEASONS years’ past.
We are like Mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed BS. Which then is regurgitated by the likes of
TRUE DAWG FAN – and he’s not the only one. Think about those MISSING TODAY who said so much about how the few of us who spoke up ALL SEASON were Georgia tek fans for doing so.
WHO DO WE HIRE ? How about ANY of these ?

Somebody (President Adams) needs to lay some serious wood to both the backsides and the head of both CMR and ADM. UGA may have won TEN games this past season: however, there was only ONE QUALITY WIN among the lot. The problem with CMR is two-fold – too much loyalty to BOBO and a serious lack of genuine passion for preparation and winning. For ADG it is really simple – he is looking at only two issues which on the surface seem to say everything is okay. The issues are wins and revenue. If he looked deeper into both matters, maybe he would realize things ARE NOT what they seem. DO DAWG NATION right – get rid of the two or three scrimmage games and start looking for a Quality winning coach who demands the absolute best of UGA players both on and off the field. Now is the time because when 2013 and 2014 comes UGA may be looking at a couple of 7&5 or 6&6 seasons.

Hey what is the deal with the person assigned to recruit running backs? I am assuming that person would be McClendon, but surely he reports directly to Bobo or Richt. Anyway, we have had some major disapointment with recent recruits and with some that were not so recent. Wayshun Ealey comes to mind, as he was touted to be the next Herschel and Caleb King comes to mind. Hey what about Mr. Premadonna, Isaiah Crowell? Malcombe is as slow as pond water (now I know why Richt has been very hesitent to start that guy) and the little scat back is just too darn small. Richard Samuel should be moved back to LB, because they are just wasting that guys career. Either our coaches do not know how to assess talent or they are pitiful at coaching those guys up. I am disgusted with our RB situation as I have ever been, and I came to another realization during the OB bowl, and that is our OL is horrible. McGarity said it right. We need to give MSU a helluva lot of credit, because they totally kicked our a%% in the second half. Hey they went in at half made some adjustments and just totally dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Another example of our coaches inability to adjust things on the fly. I do love CMR and I am happy that he has secured some stability, but I am not as die hard as I used to be. Heck if McGarity is ok with mediocrity, then I will just find something else to do with my valuable time. What happened to Will Friend’s OL? They got manhandled by the BIG 10. I am embarrassed!!!

The offensive side of the ball has zero discipline, zero leadership, and zero accountability. Which explains why we consistently get delay of game penalties or burn timeouts to avoid them. This all boils down to bad coaching. The play calling is even worse, first down- run it up the gut for 3 yard loss, second down- bomb it deep to king/Mitchell for incompletion, third down- bring in cb(Boykin/smith) for some sort of qb option (desperation play), fourth down- punt. The only thing that changes is Murray throwing a pick.

Georgia is on its way to a national championship competition. Aaron Murray is a superstar and Grantham’s defense will rock. I am not really a UGA fan, but can see this coming. If Richt was not a nice guy, there would be scores like 73-3, 66-0, 99-14. Richt will have his day in heaven(aka Athens).
