McGarity: Outback Bowl loss won’t impact negotiations with Richt

Georgia’s loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl will have no impact on contract negotiations between UGA and football coach Mark Richt, which remain at least “three to four weeks” away from completion, according to Athletic Director Greg McGarity.

Georgia AD Greg McGarity said the Bulldogs' overtime loss to Michigan State did nothing to change his opinion on the direction of the football program under coach Mark Richt. (UGA photo)

“We plan to meet as soon as we can get together,” McGarity said Wednesday. “But I don’t see anything, certainly not a signed document, anytime soon. We’ll start the process of digging into the details of our extension and it will be determined in the near future.”

McGarity also urged fans upset over the Bulldogs’ 33-30, triple-overtime loss to the Spartans to keep the defeat in perspective.

“Blair Walsh kicks a 42-yard field goal and we’re sitting here feeling great about ourselves,” McGarity said. “But would we have solved our running game problem? No. Would that have solved them being able to go on an 85-yard drive with no timeouts? No. So, I mean, the dynamics haven’t changed. It’s not going to matter diddly-squat when we start lifting weights in three weeks. If anything it’ll add more incentive for next year.”

Georgia lost back-to-back games — including a loss to LSU in the SEC Championship game — to finish the 2011 season 10-4. Richt, 51, is 106-38 heading into his 12th year as the Bulldogs’ coach.

McGarity said there is no rush to complete a new deal with Richt, who has two years remaining on an employment agreement that pays him $2.81 million annually. Including bonuses and outside income from endorsements, Richt earns more than $3 million a year.

Richt is expected to receive an extension of at least three years, which would keep him as the Bulldogs’ coach through December of 2016. McGarity said he and Richt already agreed in principle when they met last month.

“This is an important recruiting time and I told Mark after the SEC Championship game that he could go to these high school kids and tell them he’s going to be their head coach,” McGarity said. “We felt it was very important to send out the message that we haven’t worked everything out but Mark’s going to be our coach. That was the immediate need, to go ahead and address the future of our program. But we didn’t get into any details or anything like that that’s kind of where we left it. He wants to be here and we want him to be here.”

Any renegotiation is unlikely to include a significant pay raise for Richt, however. Richt is sixth among SEC coaches in compensation but that ranks No. 11 nationally. Alabama’s Nick Saban ($4.8 million), LSU’s Les Miles ($3.75), Auburn’s Gene Chizik ($3.5), Arkansas’s Bobby Petrino ($3.1) and South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier ($2.88) currently make more than Richt.

“Longevity is the first priority and then compensation would follow,” McGarity said.

McGarity said he has received about 50 emails in the wake of Georgia’s loss this past Monday. He said “about half” of those fans complained about coaching decisions made as the Bulldogs let a 16-0 at halftime lead slip away. Michigan State scored a touchdown with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 27-all and send it into overtime.

Walsh missed a 42-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game in the first overtime, then had a 47-yard attempt blocked in the third OT.

“Any time you lose a game, especially one as gut-wrenching as that one was, people get frustrated and they vent in various ways,” McGarity said. “If the game was lopsided, if we had lost 42-0 or something, then there would be some concerns. But to point the finger at a player or a coach or offense or defense or special teams is a waste of time. That was a true team loss. There are plenty of second guessers out there, but there are so many what-ifs on either side it could have gone either way.”

What McGarity hasn’t heard is enough credit being given to the Spartans, who recorded back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history.

“What I have not seen in one email is anyone giving any credit to the Michigan State team, and that’s very unfortunate because they made the plays they needed to win the game,” McGarity said. “The first thing you should do when you get beat is give the other team credit, because they’re working just as hard as you are. Kirk Cousins, look what he did in the last two minutes of the game with no timeouts. That was pretty impressive, as was the way they defended us in the second half. Unfortunately people never give the opponent any credit.”

McGarity said it’s important that Georgia fans rally behind the team, which he thinks has a chance to do some great things next season.

“We go from 6-7 to 10-4 and we’re looking forward to 2012,” McGarity said. “We’ve got a lot of kids coming back, a great nucleus and a great group of leaders. There’s a segment of our fans that want to play the blame game. But when you have a loss like that, everybody shares in it. I’m sure everybody on that field felt like they if they could have done something differently, coaches and players, we might not have lost the game. But that’s just part of the deal.

“What is important is for people to know that Mark Richt is our football coach, and he and his staff and these players spend so much time in an effort to bring championship football to Georgia. . . . The more negative people become, the more it distracts you from being successful.”

NOTES: Georgia’s annual G-Day spring football game has been set for April 14. No other spring practice dates have been set. . . . Junior noseguard John Jenkins sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder late in the Outback Bowl. However, the injury is not expected to require surgery and he will be available for spring practice. . . . Freshman wide receiver Chris Conley will undergo wrist surgery this month. . . .Redshirt freshman tailback Ken Malcome suffered a concussion early in the fourth quarter against Michigan State and did not play the rest of the game.

I am glad we have an AD that reads our emails and understands the passion. I am MORE thankful we have an AD with a level head and will do what it takes to get Georgia at the next level. But with that being said I more thankful that Mark Richt is OUR coach. But please work on the not being conservative when we get a lead coach, KEEP SCORING.

As I listen to all the comments that Coach Richt should go,Who the He– out there would we want
to be a Head Coach at Georgia and if there that good there not going top be available. As for his asst. Coach’s that solely his responsibility , I have always been under the opinion if you paid them at the end of the season for the wins there would be better support staff.

1st off it’s sad our two best RB’s are our corner backs ,second MSU already had that shut down with boykin and smith cause we had a three and out and lost yardage trying to run those plays. ( smith lost 5 yards tackle for loss ). I’m not trying to take up for BOBO.

But folks like you that come on here and say BOBO should have done this or he should have done that are just stupid. It’s easy to say what he should have done when the game has been played.

In hindsight if we kicked a field goal on the first drive of the game it would have not gone to overtime.

TDF, It’s obvious Joey (and someone on here yesterday that I can’t remember) knows very little about leadership. I guarantee that is something I have vastly more knowledge in than Joey. You overrule someone once, you get away with it and talk to them later about it. Make it a habit and the OC walks off telling you to run the d@mn offense yourself. The HEADSET is so the HC knows the flow of the game to discuss adjustments as necessary and make suggestions. HC does not, however, typically overrule an OC or DC.

But when you are calling it during the game as I was its not hindsight. I saw what was working and what wasnt.

Yes they may have stopped them once but all you have to do is play action off that and the middle of the field should be wide open with everyone keying in on playing sideline to sideline. Its in game adjustments like this that he cant do. He just doesnt have the ability to do so plain and simple or he would have shown that by now.

Also the short passes and bubble screens that were working. why stray from that so quick?? So many plays to run out of that formation. A quick fake screen to WR and then hit the Wr open over the middle. He had everyone on their def thinking sideline to sideline and to attempt to take advantage of it he ran the ball up the middle bc it had been open. Unfortunately we didnt have the RBs to do so. But instead of trying something else he stuck with it hoping one would break free but it didnt. He needed to change those runs into short crossing routes over the middle with some play action mixed in.

Tampa Richt can make any call he wants. It also depends on what relationship the HC and OC have. Richt has to be in on some of the game planning during the week to understand the plan and to have an idea how the game should be played. If Richt see something he can call any play he wants when he wants. he would be in his power to do so. You make it sounf like all HC are Bobby Bowden or Paterno just sideline figureheads.

No Mr. McGarity, we would not all be happy if Walsh had kicked the 42 yard field goal. Remember the decision with less than 3 minutes in regulation to run three straight times into a defense that we hadn’t penetrated all day?… to make them burn their time outs?… little good that did. Can you see Saban, Miles, Spurrier or Myer employing that philosophy? Then to came out in the press conference by stating the obvious, “you’ve got to protect the football”.Players make bad plays and mistakes in college football. It is up to the Coaching Staff to offset those mistakes with a sound game plan and play calling. Give Michigan State all the credit you want to, the fact is we had them beat and you know it. I know we are stuck with Richt and his gutless coaching philosophy for years to come. That’s why I can no longer invest in this program that I have followed and loved for 35 years. I’m fed up.

Then why have an OC? If you’re just going to overrule plays because, well, let’s be honest, there is a HUGE difference between CMR’s play calling style and CMBs play calling style and anyone who can’t see that is hardly watching games from a few years ago to now. If you make it a habit of overruling your OC, you will either be the OC yourself, or be forced to find a new one.

Yes Richt is obviously involved in the planning and like I said he prob gets some input during timeouts to make adjustments and input on the scripted plays. and yes im sure he has the power to do so. But no HC would. Complete slap in the face to the OC.

True Dawg Fan,

Sir, I cannot tell what you are saying. Maybe if you put quotation marks around someone else’s statements, and left them off your statements I could follow it.

What you do, is to read a post copy the whole thing and put some of your comments there. I read the same post 10 times. Is it the whole post you are putting 4 words in somewhere ?

Give me a break.

Just say you are a DISNEYdawgs.com and despite the fact that we are NOT EVEN IN THE TOP 25 FOR 2011-2012 SEASON WITH A 10-4 RECORD AND NOTE PLEASE WE BEAT NO ONE OF THE 25 ABOVE US IN THE TOP 25 ALL – BETTER THAN 10-4, you have some EXCUSE how you can

REPLAY ALL THE LOSSES WITH WHO

SHOULD HAVE WON

SURE – WE SHOULD HAVE WON AGAINST
*BOISE STATE
*SOUTH CAROLINA
*MICHIGAN STATE
*LSU I presume we would not beat, or did you WIPE OUT THAT 1 TOO ?

Sit down sometime and tell me what

YOUR POINT IS

I would love to follow it.

You know I pay for season tickets too, go to the games, played db, graduated from here, went to school here, actually follow the program, and also know what the OTHER TEAMS ARE DOING.

In other words, I am a fan too. No better and no worse than yourself, sir.

NOW WHAT IS YOUR BLOODY POINT ?

That you are SATISFIED 25 LOSSES THE LAST 6 YEARS ?

HAVE AN EXCUSE FOR ALL 25 LOSSES ?

CONSIDER THOSE GAMES WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE AND NO DISCUSSION OF THEM ?

WANT TO LOOK AT PAPER AND TELL US WE SHOULD BEAT ARKANSAS, WHEN WE DIDN’T BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA, OR BOISE STATE OR MICHIGAN STATE AND ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO HOPE WITHOUT A RUNNING GAME, NO PASS DEFENSE, NO SPECIAL TEAMS, 30 PLAYERS GIVEN SCHOLARSHIPS THIS SEASON WHO DID NOT PLAY WE SORELY NEEDED BUBBA.

Just be realistic.

And, please

True Dawg Fan, try to figure out how to post on the Internet where someone can figure out what your point is.

I’ve read all your posts today, and I think someone else wrote them earlier because I remember all those same words strung together the same way.

McGarity one bit of advice. DON’T GET COMPLACENT WITH GEORGIA’S PAST MINDSET. WE HIRED YOU TO MAKE SURE GEORGIA IS A NATIONAL POWERHOUSE. DON’T SETTLE FOR JUST BEING GOOD. DEMAND GREAT FROM EVERYBODY.
If Adam’s is your problem stand up to him and do what it takes to make Georgia one of the best team’s in the nation If you get fired for that let the Bulldawg Nation know that Adam’s would not let you do your job. I’m thinking that Richt and Dabo are two of the most consistent, inconsistent coaches in Div 1. Neither have a decent OC; however, at least we have a pretty good DC. Until we change the current football culture in Athens, we’ll beat the bottom feeders, but lose to the good teams, and with our schedule we’ll go 9-3. Anyone think that neither Richt nor Swinney will be the coaches when we meet in 2013?

Phil

McGarity sounds like that fool Frank Wren who had to stand behind Bobby Cox even though everybody and their brother knew it was time for Cox to hang it up.

I really thought McGarity was going to be the voice of reason within the UGA program. I thought he could see that Richt and Bozo are no match for Saban, Miles, Petrino and Spurrier.

Winning 10 games was great, but look at who we beat. It’s going to take an upgrade to stand toe-toe with Alabama and LSU. We’re not there yet folks, and never will be under Richt.

Fiverings

January 5th, 2012
4:32 pm

Let’s address each of McGarity’s comments:
1- “Blair Walsh kicks a 42-yard field goal and we’re sitting here feeling great about ourselves”
No we arn’t. That would have meant going 1-3 against top 4 ranked teams, and running the table on mostly teams wiht losing records. What a low standard.
2- “It’s not going to matter diddly-squat when we start lifting weights in three weeks.”
wrong. if effects recruiting, momentum going into 2012, and pre-season rankings.
3- no rush to complete a new deal with Richt
Should be if McGarity cares about moving this recruiting class up form the low 20’s right now into the top 10. Why delay?
4- if we had lost 42-0 or something, then there would be some concerns
We did, we lost 42-10 to LSU.
5- when you have a loss like that, everybody shares in it.
Let’s look at offense. Which players had turnovers? Was it everybody? No. Murray was the only one and had three. That left the defense in poor field position, and changed momentum and changed the way Bobo was calling plays and decisions to play agressive or settle for field goals. If everybody shares in the blame, where did McGarity admit his responsibility as the AD for this year’s 4 losses? Especially for the Boise loss?
6- The more negative people become, the more it distracts you from being successful.”
Really, that’s a new one. And yet another leader taught “The truth will set you free”.

McGarity was only right about one thing. Michigan State is a top 10 team and they deserve credit for taking advantage of Murray’s 3 turnover gifts.

Fact is im not going to sit here and cry about losing some games. Past is what it is and we cant change that. Should we have won some??? yes should we have lost some??? yes . Is there any point in crying about it??? no

Yes changes need to be made. but Richt isnt one of them. He just needs a nudge the right way and we are fine. Bobos inability to adapt to game changes is what is killing us. If the team we are beating scores while we are on auto pilot dont you think we should ya know take it off and press the gas again??

No pass defense??? then why did we hold LSU to 30 yards through the air??? How with no passs defense were we rated top 5 overall defense????
