TAMPA – Upon further review, Georgia’s John Jenkins said Friday he’s definitely coming back for his senior season.
The 6-foot-3, 351-pound noseguard has waffled about whether or not to turn pro after his one and only season with the Bulldogs. He requested an NFL draft evaulation earlier this month and said earlier this week he was going to give the pros serious consideration.
But then Jenkins said before Friday morning’s practice he’d decided he’d definitely remain a Bulldog another season.
“That’s where I belong, I belong at Georgia another year,” said Jenkins, a six-game starter this season. “I believe at the end of next year I’d have no choice but to be ready.”
Jenkins said he had not yet received his draft grade back from the NFL’s advisory board. But he said didn’t need to see what it said.
“Unless it’s first round, then I’d be a dumb guy not to go out,” he said. “But I don’t think that’s what I’m going to get. I think everybody knows I need to come back and polish up more with Coach [Rodney] Garner behind me. That’s what I need to do.”
With his size and athleticism, Jenkins is clearly an eventual NFL player. He has progressed exponentially during his six months at UGA. He went from playing behind sophomore Kwame Geathers to becoming a six-game starter. He enters the Outback Bowl with 28 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 sacks and 10 quarterback pressures. All are exemplary numbers at a position primarily designed to tie up interior blockers.
Jenkins is one of several Georgia underclassmen considering entering the NFL draft. Safety Bacarri Rambo said Thursday he had received a third-round draft grade from the NFL and was still “50-50″ on the decision whether to stay or go. Tight end Orson Charles is also thinking about it, as is outside linebacker Cornelius Washington and a few other players.
The Bulldogs have the ultimate resource at their disposal in Todd Grantham, who spent 11 years in the NFL before coming to Georgia as defensive coordinator. He sees it as a fairly simple decision for these young men.
“If you’re not a top 15 pick you should stay in school,” Grantham stated flatly. “If you’re a top 15 pick, the amount of money that you make you can justify it. But if you’re not, you should work to become that. Because if you look at the guaranteed money you make up at the top is so great, you can actually make money by staying. You go from being a middle second-round pick to a bottom first- or top-second-round pick, you’re talking hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. You can make that by working hard.”
That said, Grantham said he doesn’t flat out tell a player he should stay or go.
“Each individual is different and each individual has to make their own decisions,” he said. “We’re going to do what’s best for them.
“I’ll talk to them and give them my view as far as pluses and minuses for all good players and just lay it out there for them. I want to make sure they make an educated, wise decision that’s best for them and their future. But if you’re not a top 15 pick you need to be working to become that.”

The only player that should leave is Orson. Is he guaranteed to be a top-15 pick? No, but he will likely be a late first, early 2nd round guy. TE usually fall in this range, so he has nothing to gain by coming back. Don’t get me wrong, I would love for him to stay 1 more year, but you can’t blame him for leaving early. As for the rest of the guys, Rambo, Washington and Smith, you guys won’t see the field in the NFL. It bothers me that many of our top prospects over the years use UGA as a stepping stone to the NFL. It’s not about wins and losses, but instead dollar signs. But I don’t blame them, I would take the money too.

Coach Grantham you were not totally truthful. If a Kid is in the top 3 at his position he should consider going no matter the ROUND. The Money is different but a player might not get any higher with another year in college. OG’s are not top 15 picks so they all should stay? Hell no if you are the best or second best the player and agent can work that for more money.

I don’t know if the cut off point is top 15 – which most don’t have in them to achieve but I would definitely say come back unless you are a 1st round pick or early 2nd round. Rambo improved a lot this year and I can see he being a mid 2nd round pick should he stay one more year. That is a lot more more money than 3rd round. I understand his family needs the money because his father is a disabled vet? A year is not such a long time in life so I hope that Rambo will stay at UGA. Orson Charles is good enough now but I always wondered why he wasn’t moved to WR where he can be even more dominating. Hopefully he will stay but I wouldn’t blame him for going. He is probably a 2nd round choice right now.

Not every player can be a first-round pick. Remember, there are hundreds of potential picks for all NFL teams to consider. Tim Brown, WR is the only player that I can recall that was the #1 pick (player) coming out of high school, a #1 pick as a college player and hall of famer as a pro.

I believe Jenkins is one of those rare D players who could go in the top ten. This article was referring to Jenkins – so his (Grantham’s) comments probably had him in mind.

@UGAGrad71, Peyton Manning would be a really good example of a player that was #1 recruit out of high school, #1 overall in NFL, and a sure thing for 1st ballot Hall of Famer.
I realize there is a lot of hit and miss, but here is a cool article from SI last year. It shows how the top NFL draft picks were rated as high school recruits. There are some mixtures in the first round, but only 1 of the top 10 in last year’s draft was rated below 4 stars out of high school, and half of the top 10 were 5 star recruits.

John Jenkins was the piece that needed to come back to keep the defense in the top 5. Will they win a nc next season with that easy schedule? It depends on 3 things?
1) Richt must commit to the run
2) Richt must tell his team that every game is a must win
3) Richt must play his best players unless they need a breather
If he does those 3 things, they will win a nc next season…….now go sign Mike Davis-rb.

Good to see we have mr SMART here, its obvious he is an expert. He has to be a fan of Bama, which means he obviously doesn’t want to give scholarships for 4 years. But I won’t be surprised if the other conference presidents and ads don’t force the NCAA to shut down the loopholes Bama and LSU both use to get a competiive advantage over other teams. You can claim its all Saban and Miles being the greatest coaches ever, but facts don’t bear that out, Saban was a good college coach, until he got to LSU and was able to sign and cut players basically at will and doing the same at Bama, While Miles is a likeable guy, he was barely average until he got to LSU and got to start taking advantage of the lack of ethics at LSU. Its more about Bama and LSU having signed 125 players over the last 4 years compated to everyone else signing 85-90, its half an extra team. But all Bama wants is a level playing field right?

J.J. isn’t going anywhere, in spite of the fact that a lot of teams wish he would along with their fans. (I.E. Tampa Gator). He is enjoying his time playing in college, and he wants to help the DAWGS win games next year. His time will come, but it is not this year by his own choice. The money will be there next year again, after another all American team selection.
Big Mr. Jenkins needs the extra year at UGA, to sharpen his skill set to get picked up early in the NFL. He could be all SEC, at a minimum in 2012.
We will lose Boykin and Charles. The money is good enough for them to go to the NFL. Charles will be a little harder to replace than Boykin, but I think UGA has the players to do it.

Tony, the Dawgs could accomplish the 3 things you listed and still not play for NC. I think they need to be at least preseason top 10 and don’t lose. Often times if a team is worse than preseason top 10, then too many teams would have to lose multiple games for them to get a shot. So I think preseason top 10 along with your 3 things may give the Dawgs a shot. Agree?

jarvis, when a coach tells you that the season is not riding on one game, he is actually insinuating that it is not a must win game.
“It is a big build up for an opening game I think because of who we are playing, where we are playing and maybe a little bit of the uniform issue and all that kind of thing. So there’s an awful lot of hype going into this ball game compared to some other opening games. I don’t personally think that the season is riding on the one game. It’s really not. It’s a game that we absolutely want to win. It’s a game that we expect to win. We talk a lot about winning the Eastern Division, and that is the one thing that we can control. It really has no bearing on the Southeastern Conference race, so it doesn’t really get in the way of that goal or the goal of winning the Southeastern Conference. What I do think it’s going to do is give us a pretty good feel of what we are made of right away. It’s also going to be a great teacher of what it’s going to take to win in our league down the road. I think it’s very positive that we are playing the game, and I certainly would love to win it because we can create some really good momentum from that but I don’t think the season is riding in the balance.”

Orson Charles should be a Jr that should go. He will be the 1st to 3rd TE taken. Charles will not improve his draft stock much more than that. The ONLY way he would move up a bunch more spots is if there is a HUGE need for TEs next year with few being available, but he would still be the 1st to 3rd best TE. That is a HUGE if.

And for those that don’t get it………..The Draft is about VALUE at a position for both the player and the team. If good RBs are a dime a dozen then only a Jr that is for sure a 1st rd pick should go. In a heavy QB draft a Jr again unless is for sure a 1st rd pick should stay.
What a player needs to understand is how many at his position are available for the Draft when he is a Jr as compared to when he is a Sr. Andrew Luck may have lost some SHINE but he will still be a Top pick. RG3 falls somewhere between a Cam, Vick, and a Tebow type of NFL experiment.

If Dawgs want to really make a statement about their rebounding into success, they should all stay!I wish the NCAA would go to the 4 year scholarships; if you leve early, you repay the university every cent you took the years that yo were there because you did not live up to your promise of 4 years, it would only make college football stronger. Look at the number of players who have left early only to make a scou team for a couple of years, then told goodbye. Bottom line, stay in school, get an education, and get a job if not drafted then.

@DC I think someone will make a run at our DC soon. And our OL coach is proving his worth so he may garner some interest as well but that may not be till next year same with our linebackers coach. With as many vacancies for coordinators and position coaches that have recently opened up in the SEC there could be more.

It all depends on how badly a guy and his family (and possibly hangers-on) need cash. If the situation isn’t that dire, you might as well stay in school. If you can manage to eke out a degree while you’re there, you’ve helped to cover your backside in case the NFL doesn’t work out well for you.

The comments on these go or stay articles are always the same. If you are a fan of the team you justify the players staying. If you are not a fan of the team you justify the playing leaving. Get real. These guys have to make the best informed decision for themselves. That is where the real issue lies. Most college students and truth be known (based on our recent economic performance) most “so called adult experts” are not prepared to make good decisions for themselves. Preparing people for these decisions is the role of higher education.

Chip,
It’s my guess that the underclassman’s “JUST” want a eval. to see what their draft status is like. Like a kid wanting a cookie. Surely they could not be thinking about leaving. Why leave. They are a yr removed from a 6-7 season to this yr a 10 win season. IF they all stay and improve their draft status like CTG said, then the guranteed money is huge. Rambo please come back and prove that this season was not a fluke. B/c last yr you got burned a lot on the down the field passes. I think they all can improve and be 1st and second rd picks.

If Rambo stays, that’ll leave us with 9 out of 11 starters back on defense next season. What a defense we’re going to have next season. Possibly the best in the SEC. Our lineup next season should be:
DE: Garrison Smith
NG: John Jenkins
DE: Abry Jones
OLB: Jarvis Jones
ILB: Alec Ogletree
ILB: Mike Gilliard
OLB: Cornelius Washington (possibly Ray Drew)
CB: Branden Smith
FS: Bacarri Rambo
SS: Shawn Williams
CB: Sanders Commings (could be a top corner in the SEC next season; shutdown)

It sounds like we have a good person in Coach Grantham. He has had his high and low points, but if he makes sense to his players and they believe in him then he is a great person to have on staff. Our defense is greatly improved since his arrival and it looks like he has won the respect of his players. I sure do wish we had someone equally as good as offensive coordinator. I like Mike Bobo and he is a Dawg, but I think he is over his head as O.C. and should return to QB coach where he has excelled.

Agreed that is the tough call. Also someone mentioned his lack of blocking ability earlier. Well in the Pro’s I doubt he will be called on to block to much. What he may lack in the areas can easily be coached up in the Pro game. His athletic ability and mismatch with LB and safetys is what is going to make him go in the 2nd-3rd rd.

Minutes after his Alabama team had lost to Georgia Tech 7-6 last Saturday, in just about the biggest football upset of the year, Alabama Head Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant appeared in the winning team’s dressing room, smiling and completely unbearlike, despite the hurt of having been beaten for the first time in 27 games. But after an exchange of compliments with Georgia Tech Coach Bobby Dodd, Bryant’s affability was suddenly dampened by Dodd’s offhand comment, “I believe that was the cleanest game I’ve ever seen. What do you think. Coach?” Bryant, looking down at his shoes, muttered, “Huh? Oh, yeah. It certainly was. But I didn’t expect anything different.”
This is a LINK to much of the reason Dodd took Tech from the SEC.

If you like give this a try.
TAKE sugar in the RAW or Agave…………mix in water with Makers Mark.
bring to a boil
Drop the butt or ribs in the mix and let boil for 1 to 2 min.
Pull out and dip in Brown Sugar/ Makers Mark 2 x 4 mix
let hang and drip
place in smoker at 120 to 130 and smoke for 8 to 12 hours depending on the size
I like Hickory and Pecan wood to smoke
Pull from the smoker and do your DRY rub.
mine has Dill, Vidalia onions, Cayenne, Red, and Green peppers chopped fine.
With mine being sweet in the first cooking process I like a Vinegar base BBQ sauce to pint on the meat as it finish cooks. If you like the tomato bases wait until later in the cooking process so as not to burn the sauce on the meat too early.

I remember cutting lines(in 85) and driving to the parking lot for the race. Times have changed, but so have I. LOL the dumb stuff you do when young with NO FEAR.

I saw earlier where someone posted that Orson Charles was a top 15 pick. There has only been 3 TE’s in the last 10 years drafted in the top 15. Vernon Davis, Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jeremy Shockey. Most TE’s are drafted between the 25-30 picks if they are drafted in the first round at all. If Charles gets a 25-30 pick grade should go? Maybe if he came back another year he could get close to the top 15.

TampaDawg,
I see. I login. I read just off-topic personal attack, specific personal attack.
And, I am not to reply in kind ?
Just leave a personal attack sitting there, when I did NOT start it.
Right.
Sounds like CENSORSHIP to me, sir.
I am not into censorship. I believe a person has a Right to their opinion.
The CRIME as you call it is that I have the TIMIDITY to come INTO HIS BLOG, when he does not even go to the games, and share that I really want to win this game against Michigan State Monday at 1pm. That it is most important for this entire season. That we MUST win it.
NOT that we have already arrived with 10-Win season. 26 teams this season alone are 10-Win seasons. What is so special about 10-Win Seasons ?
I look at our 10-Win Season and I see Georgia tek is # 30 in the AP Poll and # 29 in the Coaches’ Poll playing a Utah team who is NOT RANKED.
I see Auburn who has ZERO VOTES in either the AP or the Coaches’.
Chris Low ESPN says a team is MEASURED BY THEIR WHOLE BODY OF WORK FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON. Neither Georgia tek nor Auburn, OBVIOUSLY, have ANY HOPE OF ENDING THIS SEASON A RANKED TEAM.
We beat NO team who ended up a ranked team last season, 2010, either.
2009, we have 1 win over a team who ended the season in the top 25, and had we NOT beat them, they would have VACATED the win.
2008, we played 3 teams who were legitimate. Michigan State certainly beat no team who ended in the top 25, but ended up # 25 anyway. That is the sum total of the wins 2008 over teams who ended up top 25.
I’d LIKE TO BEAT A TEAM WHO ENDS THE SEASON A RANKED TEAM. One whom Chris Low would consider over the body of the work for the season, a ranked team. You know ?
TampaDawg, a team who ends up top 25. Us with a win over them.
That doesn’t sound like I am asking much.
I have repeatedly called for the EXTENSION of Mark Richt’s contract LONG-SINCE. I like the guy.
Instead, I login and find that I (1) and a Georgia tek fan with my season tickets since 1978 in my name and prior to that Dad’s whom they would not let me move his points to my name. I attended UGA games since 1958. (2) that I am stupid. My diploma from UGA does not reflect that, but Honors in Latin on my diploma. (3) that I don’t know anything about football, when pardon me I played db. (4) that I do not have the Right to post my opinion that we haven’t done diddle-e-squat this 2011 season, last 2010 season, season before last 2009 season, nor 2008 season four long seasons ago.
TampaDawg, excuse me sir, if I take a moment every once and a while and ask the question, why a poster is a better Bulldogs’ fan than I when I certainly have and continue to support this football program, and believe that we are dragging this football program into the ground saying that we have already arrived with but -0- wins AGAIN this season over any team who ends up in the top 25.
I’d like to beat Michigan State.
We might play -0- teams before The SEC Championship Game next season behind Keith Marshall, who end up top 25. We might play 1. South Carolina. I don’t see it, if there is another team who ends up top 25 on that schedule 2012 for us, including a most unsavory 7 CUPCAKES at HOME for my season tickets (Do you ever stop and consider how much you and I spend every year on going to these games in total ? I went to the Georgia Dome, too, twice this season. We weren’t close in either game. I have wasted monies on T-Shirts from the Dome such as my Bust Boise $ 20 wasted monies, MARTA down there, food which was a lot less than I expected to find, and this time vs LSU did not even get offered their Jambalaya as previously down there tail-gating.)
I’d just like to Win over Michigan State.
Pardon me to all those that offends. I don’t think in the least that they are BETTER Bulldog fans than I because they ALREADY BELIEVE we have had a TREMENDOUS SEASON 2011. Uh, no we haven’t. We are 11-3 now only if we win, and I said we’d be 11-3. I said we wouldn’t have beat any team who ended up in the top 25 to go 11-3, and indeed we haven’t. Now, we have an opportunity.
I also have the TIMIDITY to state that Aaron Murray is NOT ALL THAT GREAT as our Quarterback, and that his season is a Sophomore SLUMP compared to what I found last year when I NAMED HIM MY FAVORITE BULLDOGS’ # 1 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER FOR 2010, stating as I have repeatedly that there was no # 2, just Aaron Murray as MVP 2010.
This offends ?
Pardon me.
And, Pardon me for showing such a poster that they too, have SAID ALL THESE SAME POINTS OF MINE.
And, make NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT, what that poster wants is to BAN ME. To censor me. To not allow my opinion.
Where does MY OPINION differ from that poster’s OPINION ?
Trust me, that poster has MADE ALL THE SAME STATEMENTS.
So, here we have it
TampaDawg, I am not allowed to point out that that poster SAYS EXACTLY WHAT I SAY, to the T.
Just call it CENSORSHIP here in America; there is NO OTHER WORD FOR IT.

Maybe I said it better than that poster.
With more force.
That is my profession.
It is what I do. I do have a way with words.
Which is why my home is paid for and has been for decades.
Why I owe no one one penny.
For anything.
Why I donate my earnings at my Church and to my alma mater, and to the Educational Fund. Thousands of dollars I donate to The University of Georgia.
And, I invest a ton more of my monies every year all these last 4 seasons too, to be able to login and say on my own that I’d like to BEAT MICHIGAN STATE.
We don’t take advantage of these situations playing Michigan State. That doesn’t mean that I don’t like Mark Richt. I wish he would beat someone. I’d like to see us beat a team who ends up in the top 10 again too, but that too, hasn’t happened since # 9 Auburn in 2006 when we lost 4 games then too including to an 8-loss Vandie – and that was Six (6) Seasons ago.
I want MORE.
That poster wants what we have, yet, his posts clearly state the same as I, exactly, word for word.
Don’t they ?
Or, you own TampaDawg.
But, thanks for the question

I just do not get it. If you beat a team and your win knocks them out of the Top 25 you should be punished? Also, I guess the BCS rankings mean nothing. Auburn is ranked 25th in the most recent BCS standings. 13-1, you are right. You can voice your opinion but your opinion is stupid and moronic. Usually if you beat a team that is in the top 10, more than likely you knock them out of the top 10. You just do not get it!!

It’s hilarious reading your rants 13-1. Who cares if they ended being in the top 25. Does that mean anything? I guess it means more to you if you beat them anytime during the season as long as they are ranked in the final polls. Guess what…..If Auburn beats Virginia, they will be ranked in the final polls. If UGA beats MSU, MSU will be ranked in the all mighty FINAL POLLS!!

Good news about Jenkins, As far as a national championship, everything has to fall in place. Maybe the dogs will have the talent. Some great teams win the NC, Some do not There will only be one NC and because you do not win the NC that does not mean you do not have a great team.
LSU Tigere I still think you were fortunate to get out of Atlanta with a win, even though the score was lopsided, acouple of TD missed and a couple of breaks here and the and yes you Tigers could have lost. That was a hard pill to swallow and I have not swallowed it yet. GO DOGS.

Charles should stay to work on his size and blocking as a TE. Rambo should stay to just get better at all phases of the game. Rambo would not play in the NFL. Rambo needs one more season. Jenkins is good, but not great. Jenkins needs to work hard during the off season. Jenkins needs to be dominant, not just big and good. Jenkins and Geathers could be alot better. Washington has not make much noise this year. J Jones is a great player. Jones was a force in the Fla game. Jones was never a factor in big games. I think Jones should come back. MR took Jones in after USC wrote him off.

I find it down right amazing not to long ago most knowitalls were calling for Grantham’s head. After all, he had shown to much emotion and embarrassed the UGA football team, University, and everybody connected to the program. He threated the Vanderbuilt head coach and called the jerk what he was.
Now look at it just a few month later. Most of you can’t handle someone that can call black black and white white without and gray inbetween. But praise the ones of you that can. The man is good at what he does and need not bow his head to anybody.

OK SEC haters – suck on this – here is a list of the SEC bowl teams, and their opponents, along with each team’s end of year standing in in their respected conference (based on regular season won/loss record)
(T-2) Georgia vs (1) Michigan State
(T-4/Arkansas vs (2) Kansas State
(T-4)South Carolina vs (5) Nebraska
(6) Auburn vs (T-3) Virginia
(7) Florida vs (T-8) Ohio State
(T-8) Mississippi State vs (T-3) Wake Forrest
(T-8) Vanderbilt vs (T-1) Cincinnati
Florida is the only SEC team that has a better conference record than their opponent’s conference record (can’t count USC – a tie for 4th is the same as being 5th).Think about this at the end of the bowl season. GO DOGGIES!

Can somebody please tell me, how a team can have over 400 yards of offense, have a 14 point lead, and let a QB, that by most standards, would not even be on most DIV. 1 teams rosters, beat them. I think somebody needs to get a DC at their school. They can’t afford to get rid of their HC, because they would have to pay out too much money to do that. They need to finish off paying their previous BB coach to the tune of 7 million dollars worth. I hope that Tech. at least made some profit at the sun bowl yesterday, to go along with the 1 billion bucks that some tech. fan said they receive each year, in endowments and Alumni contributions. If not for conference affiliations, they would be in the red as a football team every year.

@Preston Thompson(7:33 pm post):
You said it my friend. After the Vandy game most, if not all, of the AJC writers were leading the pack to censure, punish, fire and ride CTG out of town on a rail when all he did was tell Vandy coach Franklin to stay away from his player, who Franklin was chewing out. CTG also got in a shouting match with some of Franklin’s entourage which amounted to zero.
It finally died after the SEC investigation determined nobody should placed before a firing sqad but the unfairness of trying desparately to pin something unfavorable on CTG that was initiated by someone else gripes me to this day. AJC was like a pack of dogs attackiing a newborn calf and to be honest about it, my hero, CMR, was initially a part of the attack because he didn’t see what actually happened but made a couple of ill informed statements at first. I suppose that when the SEC found NOTHING of any significance occurred on CTG or Franklin’s(The initiator and culprit if there was one) part it went away, Just like it should have 10 minutes after it happened..

The Big J has to realize that the O will stink next year with 60% of the O-Line Graduating and with Orson gone as well, the D will have to shoulder too much load.
Also the Dawgs played for good teams this year and lost to all of them. We can’t ever seem to beat a team that is ranked higher than us. Murray musses up the bed. It is ashame that we are going to keep Richt and Bobo who again show that terrible playcalling can lose games.
I say go make the money and don’t risk coming back and getting hurt or embarrased in 2012.

Like Grantham said, it comes down to each individual player. If a player has extenuating circumstances (such as children or family concerns) then by all means go pro. There is a lot of pressure in the south for college football. You don’t see that much up north, maybe Big 12 but not as much. In the end they have to do what is right for them. I’m a die hard Georgia fan, but I will support any decision our players make. That being said, as for next year, (on the defensive side of the ball) we have enough players coming back and the coaching to be the number 1 defense in the land. We, however, need to change offensive coordinators to have a chance at a national championship. That, and a SEC caliber every down back (Kieth Marshall). GO DAWGS!

Good news. Was JJ missing in the second half of the MSU game? Would have been enough of a loss to make a difference. Where we really need help is along the offensive line. The run blocking was just not there this year, consistently. The poor RB’s were getting chewed up before they even got to the line of scrimmage. Being a RB at Georgia is now like being asked to be a kamikaze. No wonder Crowell was on the sideline so much!
