SEC drops Bama, adds Missouri for UGA’s new 2012 schedule

TAMPA — If Georgia does not repeat as Southeastern Conference Eastern Division champions in 2012, it will not have the schedule to blame.

The SEC on Wednesday finally released its new football schedules for next season and the Bulldogs made out well. They dropped the Oct. 6 game at Alabama and picked up a road game against new conference member Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 8. Meanwhile, UGA’s traditional SEC opener against South Carolina was moved back to Oct. 6. That game will also be on the road, as originally scheduled.

The only other change for the Bulldogs was their game at Kentucky, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, moves back one week. That will eliminate what was originally an off week before the Florida game. However, the Gators also lose their off week before playing the Bulldogs, so neither team has an advantage.

Georgia’s non-conference opponents of Buffalo (Sept. 1), Florida Atlanta (Sept. 15), Georgia Southern (Nov. 17) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 24)  remain the same.

“I don’t think anybody in this conference has an easy schedule,” Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Wednesday. “We have nothing to base a road game to Missouri on. There’s no question going to Columbia, Mo., is going to be a tremendous challenge.  just like Florida going to Texas A&M is going to be. I know within our building nobody is thinking there’s anything easy about our schedule.”

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt declined comment on the new slate. “I think the focus should be this game and that’s what we’re going to be focued on,” he said. “I don’t want to get too far down the road. Let’s finish up this season and we’ll talk about those things in the future.”

McGarity said it’s important to note that Georgia is not replacing Alabama with Missouri. The Bulldogs simply are keeping Auburn as their traditional rival from the West and had to honor their return game with Ole Miss after playing the Rebels in Oxford last season.

It should also be noted that the new schedule, revamped to accommodate new conference members Missouri and Texas A&M, is intended for just one year. The SEC will reconvene in the spring to look at schedules for 2013 and beyond.

“The SEC transition team and our athletic directors did a great job with significant logistical challenges in a short time frame in developing the 2012 football conference schedule,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. “The ability to come together for the conference is what makes the SEC so strong and that was evident yet again in this process.”

Said McGarity: “The entire scheduling process was difficult and the transition team led by the SEC office had to deal with some very difficult scheduling challenges and formats. That’s why it took a long time to make it through.”

McGarity remains skeptical that the league would go to nine conference games.

“It really restricts scheduling flexibility to do that, especially when it comes to traditional rivals and having a seven-game home schedule,” McGarity said. “That’s going to be very difficult to do.”

Georgia’s players were essentially oblivious to the changes.

“I really don’t pay attention to any of it,” sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones said. “We just watch film, look at the personnel and line up and play. We can’t help who we play. We don’t make the schedule. So we just go out there any chance we get and try to make the best of it.”

Said fellow linebacker Alec Ogletree: “I didn’t know anything about it. I’m still trying to focus on this year and getting this last game over with. I’ll worry about next year when it’s time to.”

Here’s how the new slate looks:

2012 GEORGIA FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

  • Sept. 1 Buffalo
  • Sept. 8 at Missouri
  • Sept. 15 Florida Atlantic
  • Sept. 22 Vanderbilt
  • Sept. 29 Tennessee
  • Oct. 6  at S. Carolina
  • Oct. 13 OPEN
  • Oct. 20 at Kentucky
  • Oct. 27 vs. Florida in Jacksonville
  • Nov. 3 Ole Miss
  • Nov. 10 at Auburn
  • Nov. 17 Georgia Southern
  • Nov. 24 Georgia Tech

This Schedule has the making of a COACH KILLER. How long was Richt’s extension? If UGA isn’t in the DOME with 1 loss or less it should surprise everybody. If the Dawgs are not in the DOME at all Richt & Bobo really have to go. The Dawgs better win cause Murray, Jarvis, and Charles will be gone for sure after next year and 13 will be stiff.
The SEC and the ACC MUST go to 9 game conference schedules keeping the traditional OOC In State Rivals like GT v UGA, FSU v UF & CU v USC. That should force the other SEC/ ACC teams to play a difficult OOC opponent in kind and that would leave only 2 OOC CUP CAKES on SEC & ACC team schedules.
That is 9 Conference Games
1 hard OOC game
1 easy FBS Game
1 FCS Game
That would make the cost of season tickets worth it.
Those defending 3 easy OOC game at home are Fools. Why in the hell would you want to PAY Good Money to see Ga Southern, Buffalo, or Coastal Carolina? Don’t you know you are getting ROBBED and you are smiling and bending over gladly taking it. That is just STUPID.
9 Conference Games make the price of tickets worth it.
Well you did say this IS BIG BOY FOOTBALL so Pay to see it and Play it too.

What a complete DA! Bama plays LSU,A&M,Mizzso,Ark and you saw Bama is lucky not to play the loser Dogs. No matter what the teams in the East do they will get the living sheet beat out of them when they play the West winner. Getting to Atlanta from the East side means nothing other than you will get blasted by 40 by the West. Enjoy being the best college team in America from March until August…again little pups.

ahahahahhahaha. You have no clue do you??? Where we the west teams when UGA, UF and TEnn were winning the SEC every year?????? Hmmmmmm……

Very true. I still hate the easy schedule. I’d rather play a tough schedule to prove our worth.
Look at at LSU this year. Their schedule was the hardest and hence, no one is arguing who the best team in the land is.

There was a time when UT, AU, Fla games were powerhouses and almost guaranteed losses for the DAWGS. I didn’t include Tech as they are usually just a cut above New Mexico State. Just a bowl game scrimmage. The east is definitely down, but can’t fault UGA for that. Welcome MIZZ! Glad to have you in the best conference in the USA- winners of 5 (guaranteed to be 6, soon) straight national titles. Sorry ACC fans, you are still just the ACC.

I see your point and yes it would be nice to not hear all the haters, but go back and look at some of the previous winners and see how they won it. Lots of those you will see 3-4 cup cake OOc games and then getting lucky with which SEC teams they were forced to play that year. Not many have had to go through what LSU did this year. (Bama def didnt even come close to as tough a schedule)

Depending on one’s point of view this is wonderful or terrible. If UGA blows through this schedule the talking heads will say they should and rank them low because of a “light” schedule; however, if we tank on a few then we will be overrated and the “Fire Mark Richt” contingency will be gnashing their teeth. IF all of our non seniors come back and we get a few good recruits plus BoBo taking “In Game adjustments 101″, we might do just fine. There is no excuse for us not repeating as SEC East Champs though.

The Mizzou game will not be easy by any stretch. Their mobile passing QB will be a Junior and he has alot of yards both passing and rushing. Their #1 RB is also a Junior (their QB is the #2 rusher). Their #1 & #3 WRs will be Seniors, however they are losing their #2 receiver, who was their TE. Still, a veteran college skill set. The bad news for them is they are losing Seniors on the offensive line (LG, RG, RT). It should be a great game.

To the Tech fans on here pretending to be other SEC team fans, here is an education for you. S. Carolina’s annual SEC West opponent is Ark. Since USC joined in 1992 they have only faced LSU 6 times. UGA has seen them 9 times during the same time span. LSU is UF’s annaul west rival just like how Bama is for UT. And UGA’s is obviously Auburn.

There are no cupcake schedules in the SEC. There are only degrees of hard. If you are not ready to play, anyone can beat you on any given day. This is not the Mountain West or the Big Least. That said, it is one of the less difficult schedules in the SEC.

And why do Tech fans feel the need to come over here and antagonize especially after they got there arses handed to them. I don’t care enough about them to even look at the articles related much less post a comment. They are irrelevant.

SEC made the schedule

Paul in NH

The schedule isn’t a surprise – the rumor of Mizzou replacing Bama has been around for weeks now.
If the SEC stays with 8 games where you play 6 division rivals, one tradional rival in the other division (e.g. UGA-Auburn, ALA-Tenn, UF-LSU, etc) you’ll only get a home game against one of the other 6 teams in the conference every 12 years. Slive and the ADs will love it – the fans, not so much.
