SEC drops Bama, adds Missouri for UGA’s new 2012 schedule

TAMPA — If Georgia does not repeat as Southeastern Conference Eastern Division champions in 2012, it will not have the schedule to blame.

The SEC on Wednesday finally released its new football schedules for next season and the Bulldogs made out well. They dropped the Oct. 6 game at Alabama and picked up a road game against new conference member Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 8. Meanwhile, UGA’s traditional SEC opener against South Carolina was moved back to Oct. 6. That game will also be on the road, as originally scheduled.

The only other change for the Bulldogs was their game at Kentucky, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, moves back one week. That will eliminate what was originally an off week before the Florida game. However, the Gators also lose their off week before playing the Bulldogs, so neither team has an advantage.

Georgia’s non-conference opponents of Buffalo (Sept. 1), Florida Atlanta (Sept. 15), Georgia Southern (Nov. 17) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 24)  remain the same.

“I don’t think anybody in this conference has an easy schedule,” Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Wednesday. “We have nothing to base a road game to Missouri on. There’s no question going to Columbia, Mo., is going to be a tremendous challenge.  just like Florida going to Texas A&M is going to be. I know within our building nobody is thinking there’s anything easy about our schedule.”

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt declined comment on the new slate. “I think the focus should be this game and that’s what we’re going to be focued on,” he said. “I don’t want to get too far down the road. Let’s finish up this season and we’ll talk about those things in the future.”

McGarity said it’s important to note that Georgia is not replacing Alabama with Missouri. The Bulldogs simply are keeping Auburn as their traditional rival from the West and had to honor their return game with Ole Miss after playing the Rebels in Oxford last season.

It should also be noted that the new schedule, revamped to accommodate new conference members Missouri and Texas A&M, is intended for just one year. The SEC will reconvene in the spring to look at schedules for 2013 and beyond.

“The SEC transition team and our athletic directors did a great job with significant logistical challenges in a short time frame in developing the 2012 football conference schedule,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. “The ability to come together for the conference is what makes the SEC so strong and that was evident yet again in this process.”

Said McGarity: “The entire scheduling process was difficult and the transition team led by the SEC office had to deal with some very difficult scheduling challenges and formats. That’s why it took a long time to make it through.”

McGarity remains skeptical that the league would go to nine conference games.

“It really restricts scheduling flexibility to do that, especially when it comes to traditional rivals and having a seven-game home schedule,” McGarity said. “That’s going to be very difficult to do.”

Georgia’s players were essentially oblivious to the changes.

“I really don’t pay attention to any of it,” sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones said. “We just watch film, look at the personnel and line up and play. We can’t help who we play. We don’t make the schedule. So we just go out there any chance we get and try to make the best of it.”

Said fellow linebacker Alec Ogletree: “I didn’t know anything about it. I’m still trying to focus on this year and getting this last game over with. I’ll worry about next year when it’s time to.”

Here’s how the new slate looks:

2012 GEORGIA FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

  • Sept. 1 Buffalo
  • Sept. 8 at Missouri
  • Sept. 15 Florida Atlantic
  • Sept. 22 Vanderbilt
  • Sept. 29 Tennessee
  • Oct. 6  at S. Carolina
  • Oct. 13 OPEN
  • Oct. 20 at Kentucky
  • Oct. 27 vs. Florida in Jacksonville
  • Nov. 3 Ole Miss
  • Nov. 10 at Auburn
  • Nov. 17 Georgia Southern
  • Nov. 24 Georgia Tech

Georgia is living right…managed to miss LSU, Alabama AND Arkansas for the 2nd straight season. Don’t even have to play Texas A&M. That’s a 12-0 season with a trip to the Georgia Dome to play LSU or Bama.

Its called they are in the West and we are in the east. With 7 teams (And you have to play ALL 6 others in your division) on each side and only 8 conf games it makes it hard to do the rotation dont you think? Do research then post people its getting pathetic that you people know nothing about football.

So, Georgia “wins” the SEC East and doesn’t play any tough teams from the West. SC finishes second and has to play LSU and Arkansas? Someone in SEC HQ likes the Dawgs.

FYI Florida is down retard, Tenn down.

No one is scared of the little trojans. Come play in a real conference and lets see how good USC really is.

So True Dawg Fan is STUPID enough to really want some of USC (the real one) with Barkley coming back? You Do know Aaron Murray is average at best don’t you? Murray has made his bones against the worst teams.

Nice of Georgia to intentionally duck Alabama, even with that cupcake out of conference schedule they play. What a joke. I guess they’re too chicken to play Alabama. How can you duck playing the Tide year after year? I guess this is why the SEC invited Missouri. They’re the new Vanderbilt.

All that needs to be said is that you are an idiot.

@True Dog Fan – No Brains

Ok, No one with Brains will accept a BCS systems that has flourished in 12+ years in college football.

The SEC is a good conferenc but like all conferences, it’s top heavy. Now let’s look at facts.

Two list:
Good teams in the SEC
1. LSU 2. Bama

Other teams in the SEC
Arkansas
Ole Miss
Miss State
Kentucky
S. Carolina
Auburn
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

Out of the 2nd list, Florida is down but they will be back. Auburn is rebuilding, Georgia is a good team but is always play for 3rd or 4th place. On the 2nd list of teams, could any of those teams beat Oregon State, the real USC, Oklahoma State, or Boise State………….NO

Ok True Dog, you played Boise State, they blew you out of the water in your own backyard. The East division in the SEC sucked this past year, you won by default and look at what happen when you got to the Georgia Dome. Not only did I play sports, but I played D-1 basketball. The last time you had on a uniform is when mommie dropped you off to your boyscouts meeting.

Can we please drop Buffalo or Florida Atlantic for better teams? How about an ACC or Big 12 team? Alabama would have almost certainly beat us, especially if Richardson comes back, so I don’t mind us dropping them, but our non-conference schedule should not be that easy!

Read previous comments. This is how it is done in the SEC. Every team does it to supplement the brutal sEC schedule. and FYI if they make us play 9 conf games the OCG will get even easier for everyone.

Or maybe just maybe the schedule is set years and years in advance and there is no way to know who is up and who is down that far out since all players on the teams will be gone by the time the game is actually played. Get a clue people.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet but that schedule looks like the makings of 12-0. 12-1 or 13-0 will depend on how well the Dawgs play. 12-2, 13-1, or 14-0 will depend on who the Bowl game is against and again, how well the Dawgs are playing.

First of all Georgia did not “DROP” Alabama to pick up Mizzou. We have an every year game with Auburn and Ole Miss owed the Dawgs a game in Athens. You also have to play Mizzou as they are in the East so that left Alabama out. Now, am I glad that we don’t play Alabama, sure, who wouldn’t be? And as far as you idiot moron Tech fans getting on here and complaining about the Georgia schedule, why don’t you step up to the plate and schedule Alabama, or LSU or even South Carolina instead of Troy, or Middle Tenn? Hell you guys won’t even schedule Georgia Southern, who would kick your ass and your no defense playing team!

We have a ton of young guys on defense who could be starting for other teams and a bunch of talent coming in… defensively we almost always reload.
