SEC drops Bama, adds Missouri for UGA’s new 2012 schedule

TAMPA — If Georgia does not repeat as Southeastern Conference Eastern Division champions in 2012, it will not have the schedule to blame.

The SEC on Wednesday finally released its new football schedules for next season and the Bulldogs made out well. They dropped the Oct. 6 game at Alabama and picked up a road game against new conference member Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 8. Meanwhile, UGA’s traditional SEC opener against South Carolina was moved back to Oct. 6. That game will also be on the road, as originally scheduled.

The only other change for the Bulldogs was their game at Kentucky, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, moves back one week. That will eliminate what was originally an off week before the Florida game. However, the Gators also lose their off week before playing the Bulldogs, so neither team has an advantage.

Georgia’s non-conference opponents of Buffalo (Sept. 1), Florida Atlanta (Sept. 15), Georgia Southern (Nov. 17) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 24)  remain the same.

“I don’t think anybody in this conference has an easy schedule,” Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Wednesday. “We have nothing to base a road game to Missouri on. There’s no question going to Columbia, Mo., is going to be a tremendous challenge.  just like Florida going to Texas A&M is going to be. I know within our building nobody is thinking there’s anything easy about our schedule.”

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt declined comment on the new slate. “I think the focus should be this game and that’s what we’re going to be focued on,” he said. “I don’t want to get too far down the road. Let’s finish up this season and we’ll talk about those things in the future.”

McGarity said it’s important to note that Georgia is not replacing Alabama with Missouri. The Bulldogs simply are keeping Auburn as their traditional rival from the West and had to honor their return game with Ole Miss after playing the Rebels in Oxford last season.

It should also be noted that the new schedule, revamped to accommodate new conference members Missouri and Texas A&M, is intended for just one year. The SEC will reconvene in the spring to look at schedules for 2013 and beyond.

“The SEC transition team and our athletic directors did a great job with significant logistical challenges in a short time frame in developing the 2012 football conference schedule,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. “The ability to come together for the conference is what makes the SEC so strong and that was evident yet again in this process.”

Said McGarity: “The entire scheduling process was difficult and the transition team led by the SEC office had to deal with some very difficult scheduling challenges and formats. That’s why it took a long time to make it through.”

McGarity remains skeptical that the league would go to nine conference games.

“It really restricts scheduling flexibility to do that, especially when it comes to traditional rivals and having a seven-game home schedule,” McGarity said. “That’s going to be very difficult to do.”

Georgia’s players were essentially oblivious to the changes.

“I really don’t pay attention to any of it,” sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones said. “We just watch film, look at the personnel and line up and play. We can’t help who we play. We don’t make the schedule. So we just go out there any chance we get and try to make the best of it.”

Said fellow linebacker Alec Ogletree: “I didn’t know anything about it. I’m still trying to focus on this year and getting this last game over with. I’ll worry about next year when it’s time to.”

Here’s how the new slate looks:

2012 GEORGIA FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

  • Sept. 1 Buffalo
  • Sept. 8 at Missouri
  • Sept. 15 Florida Atlantic
  • Sept. 22 Vanderbilt
  • Sept. 29 Tennessee
  • Oct. 6  at S. Carolina
  • Oct. 13 OPEN
  • Oct. 20 at Kentucky
  • Oct. 27 vs. Florida in Jacksonville
  • Nov. 3 Ole Miss
  • Nov. 10 at Auburn
  • Nov. 17 Georgia Southern
  • Nov. 24 Georgia Tech

So will y’all keep teh kiddie schedule after next year or does it depend on Richt’s won-loss record?

Everyone seems to forget that whhiule our schedule may be softer than others,, we are possibly losing several key elements of our defense to the NFL if our juniors decide to leave. Many will not take that into consideration when crowning us pre-season East Champions or even better…Each year is different and you can’t afford to lose players that we could without it affecting our team…But the preseaso know-it alls will probably have us up there pretty high, which if we don’t deliver will have everyone calling for someones head…Not trying to be negative, but just facing reality if we lose the players that may declare for the NFL.. I would love to see what this team could accomplish next season with these guys coming back…time will tell…but remember, even though we have other talent on this team they will be young and may take time to develop…go dawgs

Funny how Ramble On runs his nerd mouth for a month before the Dawgs’ annual a** whipping of them, then he disappears for the next month. Yet, here we find him again. Don’t you geeks have your own blog? Then again, what would you talk about, how to somehow beat Georgia more often than once every 11 years? Get a life.

I find it humorous all these people cracking on Georgia’s “easy” schedule this year and next year. I don’t remember these people feeling sorry for Georgia when they played one of the toughest schedules in the country for most of the last decade. The way I see it, Bama, LSU, and especially Arkansas are just as fortunate not to have to play what should be a top ten Georgia team next year.

Wow, people are still here trying to rag on UGA’s schedule? Sorry for the mistake I made way back on page whatever. Richt is only 3-1 against Bama. Sorry about that misinformation early folks. So since UGA being part of the normal SEC scheduling rotation isn’t fair, should we lobby that UGA play 13 SEC games each year, all on the road? Will that make you trolls happy?

How come UGA fans aren’t defending their schedule as tough? I don’t see Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Miss St fans… Oh and UT fans… trying to defend their schedule. We already know it’s hard.

The table is set for September, UA vs USC for national championship game and UGAs schedule very weak. Know what that means? high expectations to win out yet nobody outside ajc and Athens will care. so what happens if you lose to Mizzou in their first SEC game?!? Oh my. Tar and feather UGA not only for being cowards but losers as well. Which even you guys did after losing to UVF in that Memphis no name bowl.

I seriously doubt that if UGA wins a MNC anyone will apologize for the schedule. Much like USC and the rest of the cheaters who claimed one. If the schedule is one the softer side and thats the WORST part of a MNC run for UGA then the only ones having a problem are trolls and haters. Which one are you?

Clearly, the Dawgs revert to a schedule similar to what it looked like before the arrival of S. Carolina and Arkansas to the SEC. On the flipside is that wins and losses don’t mean much in the ESPN-NCAA. It’s all about style points so… whooping up on a few lesser teams will go a long way.

Heck no, that is no way to run a sport but… the fans and the schools don’t have any control anymore. We’re all just part of the big farm system operated by the sports media.

Personally, I’d like to see only one or two non-conference games per season and base the outcome on the won-loss record of conference games ONLY. But so long as it is run like a dog and pony show, there’s no reason not to take every advantage it offers.

Who the “strongest” teams in the conference are for 2012 is only a guess based on past performance. Even the top teams are only one or two key injuries away from being average. How strong Alabama will be next year is primarily dependent on how many on the current team enter the NFL draft. Lets not worry about next year since we have not yet played our bowl games.
