Isaiah Crowell ‘under weather’ for Georgia’s first practice in Tampa

TAMPA — Back at my room after Georgia’s first Outback Bowl practice. Will be posting some reports later this afternoon. For now, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Tailback Isaiah Crowell is “feeling under the weather,” according to coach Mark Richt, and was standing on the sidelines and not participating, at least for the open part of practice early on. His left ankle apparently is not an issue and he will be able to play in the game.
  2. Richt said Ken Malcome enters the week No. 1 on the tailback depth chart but that it’s “a highly competitive situation” with Richard Samuel (ankle) coming back and Crowell and Carlton Thomas healthy. “I hope Ken hangs on,” Richt said. “That’d be good for him.”
  3. Speaking of Samuel, he was practicing full speed and appeared pretty agile. Said he’s eager to get back on field after being sidelined since the last play of his impressive effort against Florida.
  4. Wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell acknowledged there has been some kind of preliminary discussion about him possibly playing some cornerback next season. However, offense would still be his primary role.
  5. “If I think that it’ll help us win and he can function and do that, that’d be fine,” Richt said. “We have a few guys that play both ways but we try to have them focus on one position. If they have enough of a comfort level knowing what to do, we can begin to share a little bit. I wouldn’t be against it.” . . . Defensive end DeAngelo Tyson (ankle) didn’t practice but is expected to before game per Richt. . . . Linebacker Michael Gilliard worked out on side in green (non-contact) jersey but seemed confident he’d be able to go. Said he ran full speed on ankle escaping from a bull while “cow-tipping” in Valdosta over holiday. . . . Punter Drew Butler was full go after being sidelined with a left ankle injury for Georgia’s practices in Athens. Butler injured his non-punting foot while walking in slick, tuxedo shoes before UGA’s Senior Gala. . . . Georgia practiced in full pads under a light rain on the University of Tampa’s Rood Field at Pepin Stadium. It’s a soccer pitch they converted into a football field, complete with temporary goal posts. . . . Georgia is practicing under a huge banner that says “S-P-A-R-T-A-N-S.” That’s the mascot for Tampa. It also happens to be Michigan State’s team name. “I just saw that when we got off the bus,” Richt said.
This is the name in front of which the Bulldogs are practicing this week at the University of Tampa.

C’mon folks. Don’t be so gullible. Don’t you know that the link, “Crowell illness”, is going to draw your eyeballs to the link so that you’ll click it. Next, the ads will appear for the companies that pay for the AJC. Next, the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) of that company will get an email report showing how many of you consumers saw their ad.

All this news was purported to do was report on a practice. You clicked the link; read something about Crowell, and now you’re blogging about him. I guess the marketing journalism worked.

Who’s the bigger disappointment? IC or Falcons last night. Truth be told I’m not shocked at either. Next year’s cometition will make or break this kid. Bet with my head and he’s gone by season end either from discipline or academics. Bet with my heart we have a movie of the week moment and you see him running in slow motion cheered on by adoring caucasian fans charging over would be LSU tacklers, life turned around, scoring the winning touchdown and leaping into CMR’s arm’s even as he shoves aside his post game smooch with his wife Seriously, which one do you think more likely? Will we see him prance across the stage at graduation flipping his tassle to the left side, waving and smiling to his oodles of fans, dressed to the nines, suma cum laud and headed to a millionair’s life or will he end up standing behind some local package store with Waushan Ealey passing a blunt and drinking 40s waiting on Caleb King to pick them up so they can go hit another “lick” to get money for crack. Which one do you really think is most likely. Working as a pot-bellied county employee in a green jumper with his first name on the right shirt pocket embroidered in red collecting his 36 g annual salary and benefits to help feed his brood of squalling brats or strutting across the stage in NYC two years from now receiving the Heisman and dreaming of glory in the NFL and maybe even a side career in rap. If you really think about how these kids’ lives play out either scenario is on the horizon. We’ve seen it time after time after time at UGA and everywhere else. Think about the kid from Ohio State that wound up in prison after breaking all kinds of freshmen records at OSU. Or the dude name Lawrence (Can’t remember his his name) from Nebraska, 2nd pick in NFL draft, out of football within a couple of years and prison bound. Clearly Caleb King is spoken for and I bet I’m not too far off. Waushan Ealey’s story has not been finished but it will be when he leaves Savannah State. We’ll know very soon about IC. Folks, a winner is a winner no matter where they come from and a stinker is a stinker just the same. Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?

Tell you what hornblow. Let’s play a little game in our minds. Let’s pretend that Ken was in the room and we get to ask him directly which was true.

1.That he had to overcome some issues, his fortunes have been squarely on him, and is very thankfull to have a coach Like Richt.

OR

2.He has been 100% on board since he had a great camp and proved he was ready to contribute BUT Richt holding him out while repeatedly using encouraging words (including in this article), talking him into NOT quiting, using a 5 foot walk on with games on the line, was just to mess with him.

Now I wonder what he would say is more likely?

2012 schedule out, undefeated in SEC play winning the east. Will then play an undefeated Bama for the SEC Championship and lose. so then does a one loss UGA play Bama again or will undefeated USC get the nod? Let the discussion begin.

I personally hope that Richard Samuel gets the start or at least a lot of playing time. The guy seems best fitted for linebacker, and previously looked like he went down easily and tripped on himself……but the light flipped on in the UF game. His exuberance and wanting the ball in the crucial aspect of the UF game for me was the highlight of the season. I felt badly that he was injured and could not bask in his accomplishments for the next games/

I hope Malcome does well. Sure it would be good for him; it would be good for us.

Crowell….REALLY hope he gets it together and has a great game and a great 2012-2013. I am not down on him. I know it is not easy being a freshman with that kind of pressure and his ability is apparent. He has a lot to learn and many things he needs to unlearn. If he had turned his back on Coach Dooley as he did CMR in the SECCG, he would no longer be a Georgia Bulldog.

If Mitchell is a better cornerback than a wide receiver, then I am certainly going to enjoy watching him even more than I thought next year.

Go Dawgs!

IC has all the athletic tools needed to be a very dangerous running back in the SEC for UGA. Maturity is what it will take to become a DGD. I hope that he can make this jump and it will start with his performance and effort or lack thereof, on Monday January 2nd.

There are so many Know It Alls on this blog. Can’t we just let the coaches handle IC and ALL the rest? Thats what they get paid for and I’m confident they know a helluva lot more about what is going on and what needs to be done than any of us or maybe we have a bunch of geniuses on here that should be coaching somewhere. Even outsiders like some of the GT fans have better attitudes than our own so-called Dawg Fans. You negative idiots are a large part of the problem and probably aren’t real Dawg fans anyway.

Hellerrrr!….MSU is used to the big so called bruising backs that Malcome and Samuel are…They see that every week up north…..What they don’t see is the speed that the southern teams posess….Just look at what Bama did to them last year……The physical part they can hang with but where the SEC gets them is in the speed game therefore I would much prefer to see a healthy IC in the backfield than the alternatives…..anyway, he’s already shown us flashes of what he can do when healthy and I think he truly is striving to be the best RB he can be…..His ego wont let him fail himself……The mental mistakes he can fix himself as I’m sure he will, but he was’nt physically prepared for the rigors of SEC play this soon considering he was used to racking up 200 + yards in the first half at Carver then sitting out the rest of games…..Just my oppinion

Crowell doesn’t have the drive to make it in ” Big Time ” college football. Just my opinion. And yes, I am a Dawg fan!!! Always have been, always will be. He was a stud in high school, and he was pampered & babied. He doesn’t have enough between the ears to realize what an opportunity he has been given. He appears to be childish, and pouty. And has already proven more than once that he lacks the toughness to play in the SEC.It wouldn’t bother me at all if he were not a Bulldog next year.

I AGREE LAY OFF THE KID!!!!!!

Lets address the first comment. I think you may be smoking some of the same stuff IC did earlier this year. Swapping road games with Alabama and Missouri does make it a little bit easier for UGA, but early in the year on the road against a team that is going to return 18 starters who throws it like Arkansas but with a quarterback similar to Cam Newton but only a freshman will make that road game much tougher. Then later on USC in the other Columbia is not going to get any easier. All that does is give Lattimore a few more weeks to get healthy and more than likely will be played in the 6 p.m. time slot.

Second comment: Lay off the kid! No.1, he is not a kid any longer, he wanted to be treated like an adult when he broke rules and decided the drugs were more important than playing football. There is a difference between being a kid and acting like one, and everyone will agree he as ACTED more like a kid than he has looked like an adult.

Crowell will be fine, in the bowl game and next year. He had a tough year, the expectations he faced were insane. But overall I think he ran the ball well and showed that he has a lot of talent and potential. I expect him to have a very good season next year. A offseason in the S&C program will do wonders for him, along with Keith Marshall pushing him to play better

“[Crowell] has already proven more than once that he lacks the toughness to play in the SEC”. AND “It wouldn’t bother me at all if he were not a Bulldog next year.” Are you out of your mind!? This 5-star recruit just won the SEC Freshman of the Year award and had one of the highest yardage totals for a freshman ever at UGA. And you wouldn’t care if he was gone? Me thinks you are not a very good judge of talent and are giving up on a potential superstar WAY too soon. We can all agree there are some things we wish he had done differently but I’m glad you’re not in charge.
