Monetary gifts from Richt among secondary NCAA violations reported by UGA

ATHENS – Mark Richt’s generosity and compassion toward his staff has landed the Georgia football coach in hot water with the NCAA.

Richt made personal payments of more than $25,000 to coaches and support staff due to what he perceived as inadequate compensation for those individuals. Richt’s actions were determined to be secondary violations of NCAA rules regarding supplemental pay, according to a recent NCAA review of an lengthy internal investigation conducted by UGA.

According to those reports, obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution through the Freedom of Information Act, Richt paid former recruiting assistant Charlie Cantor $10,842 over an 11-month period through March of 2011, former linebackers coach John Jancek $10,000 in the summer of 2009 and $6,150 to director of player development John Eason in July of 2010. All of the payments were made by checks from Richt’s personal bank account after UGA’s previous athletic administration declined his requests for increased compensation for those parties.

However, Richt unknowingly violated the provisions of NCAA bylaw 11.3.2.2, which regulates supplemental pay for staff members. Both Richt and the staff members who accepted his payments received letters of admonishment from UGA and must undergo additional rules education, according to the documents.

Richt was unavailable for comment on Monday. Athletic Director Greg McGarity declined to discuss details about the case, but acknowledged that all the violations discovered were deemed secondary and that the NCAA considers it a closed matter as of Nov. 30th.

“The report stands on its own,” McGarity said on Monday. “There’s nothing to add. We’re moving forward.”

Richt’s unsanctioned payments were just a few of several violations discovered by UGA in an internal investigation led by attorney Mike Glazier of the NCAA-specialized lawfirm of Bond, Schoeneck & King of Overland Park, Kan. In all, the Bulldogs admitted to committing at least 10 secondary violations in separate reports submitted first to the SEC office in Birmingham.

The NCAA enforcement staff reviewed those reports and responded with its findings in a Nov. 30th letter to SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. In summary, the NCAA agreed with assertions of Georgia and the SEC that all the violations were secondary. As a result of actions already taken, “no further action should be taken by the NCAA in the matter,” wrote Christopher Stroebel, NCAA director of enforcement for secondary violations.

Also revealed in the report:

  • Georgia was determined to have violated game-simulation recruiting rules during an unofficial visit last January by prospective student-athlete Marshall Morgan. Morgan is a place-kicker from Coral Springs, Fla., who has committed to sign in the class of 2012. Coaches played a video of the Georgia fans’ doing the traditional cheer, “Go Dawgs, Sic ‘Em,” on the Sanford Stadium videoboard, while Morgan pretended to kickoff. Richt self-reported the incident retrospectively after learning that the “missing man formation” the Bulldogs’ orchestrated for Isaiah Crowell last January constituted a secondary violation.
  • Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham had impermissible contact with an unidentified recruit in May of 2010. After signing in at the front office of a high school, Grantham walked down a hall looking for the school’s football coach. Unable to locate the coach’s office, Grantham was approached by a young man who asked if he could help him find his way. As it turned out, that individual was the prospect Grantham was there to recruit. Their “small talk” on the way to the coach’s office exceeded the NCAA’s limits for “greetings” during a non-contact period and Georgia was found to be in violation of NCAA bylaws 13.02.4 and 13.1.1.1 regarding contact. As a result, Grantham was withheld from off-campus recruiting activities from Nov. 27-Dec. 3, the number of evaluation days for the football staff for spring of 2012 was reduced from 168 to 158 and Grantham was ordered to attend a two-day rules seminar next summer.
  • An unidentified football prospect (his name was redacted because he is now enrolled at UGA) received impermissible overnight lodging and transportation during an overnight visit last year. The prospect was scheduled to spend the night with a student-athlete in a university dormitory, which is sanctioned, but made a “spur-of-the-moment decision” to stay with another student-athlete at an off-campus apartment. Off-campus lodging and transportation for which is impermissible.
  • Last month, Georgia provided two free meals to Tyriq Gurley, the 5-year-old little brother of 2012 running back prospect Todd Gurley. Meals were permitted for Gurley and his parents but not for siblings on the official visit. The Gurleys reimbursed UGA $21.33 for the child’s meals and UGA reported a violation of bylaw 13.6.7.7.

Those minor violations were added to a list that included Crowell’s “the missing man formation,” the impermissible participation of football lettermen Randall Godfrey and David Pollack in the commitment announcement ceremony of then-prospect, and the routine overpayment of four graduate assistants due to a clerical error last spring, and several instances of inadvertent “pocket dialing” of prospects during impermissible periods earlier this year.

While all the violations are minor and seem trivial in nature, McGarity was profusely apologetic in his seven-page letter to Slive.

“I want you to know that I am disappointed and embarrassed to be reporting multiple secondary violations in our football program,” McGarity wrote. “It is my hope, however, that after reviewing our self-report of each of these matters, you will come to the same conclusions that I have.”

Ultimately, Slive and the NCAA agreed with Georgia’s assessment. But McGarity is vowed to step up the Bulldogs’ educational efforts regarding NCAA policy. In addition to regularly-scheduled classes, he has instituted monthly and quarterly meetings for coaches and support staff.

Clearly the most intriguing findings were those that detailed Richt’s under-the-table payments to staff when the previous administration refused his requests. Not only does it illustrate Richt’s determination to do what he perceived as right for his staff members, it offers a glimpse into the dynamics of the relationship between Richt and former AD Damon Evans.

  • Richt decided to pay Cantor money out of his own pocket after determining that Cantor was underpaid for his position compared to comparable programs against whom Georgia competed. Richt asked for a $10,000 raise. However, the University was in the midst of a campus-wide pay freeze and was experiencing furloughs, so Evans declined. Richt subsequently paid Cantor $834 a month over 13 months via personal check.
  • Richt did the same thing in the summer of 2009. Richt asked the administration for a raise for linebackers coach John Jacek after he was offered the coordinator’s position in the summer of 2009. Richt’s request was declined, so he wrote Jancek a personal check for $10,000 on June 30, 2009.
  • Eason received a $6,150 pay cut when Richt moved him off the coaching staff into an administrative role. Richt wrote a personal check for that amount to Eason in July of 2010.

McGarity contends it wasn’t rogue behavior on Richt’s part. The UGA AD included exhibits in his report of instances in which the athletic department sanctioned monetary gifts from Richt.

In December 2009, due to “difficult economic conditions being experienced by the University,” the athletic department decided to not provide “bowl bonuses” to non-coach staff members. Richt went to senior associate AD Frank Crumley and asked him to provide a chart of who would have normally received bonuses and in what amount. Crumley provided that list and Richt paid 10 people – sports medicine director Ron Courson, video coordinator Joe Tereshinski, strength and conditioning coaches Keith Gray and Clay Walker, football operations manager Josh Brooks, high school relations director Ray Lamb and four administrative assistants — $15,227 out of his own pocket.

Richt also paid the $15,337.50 five-year longevity bonus to former assistant Dave Johnson when Johnson left Georgia in 2008 just short of his fifth anniversary and the administration refused to pay. Richt paid $6,000 to Jon Fabris in December of 2010 when Fabris was unable to find a job after his UGA severance package expired.

In each case, the payments were not considered against NCAA rules because they were done with the knowledge of the athletic administration, according to the report.

McGarity wrote in the report that he included details of those actions by Richt because “the University believes Coach Richt acted out of a generous heart and certainly without any intent to violate NCAA rules.” McGarity explained that Richt and his wife Katharyn maintain two checking accounts, one that is used primarily by his wife for household expenses. The other, monitored by Richt, is what they call their “Giving Account.”

Not much to see here, except for the Richt payments. He may have acted out of generosity, but the payments were obvious rule violations. Definitely secondary violations that were reported, so no real story.

If members of his staff were really experiencing financial hardships, then I am glad Richt did what he did. That is what leaders do; they take care of their people when their people need help. As for Todd Gurley’s brother, that seems like a serious flaw in the recruiting process. There needs to be an age where siblings can attend events with the recruit. It is not like the parents could have left a 5-year old at home when they attended this event.

I am guessing that the sibling rule came about because of 15-16 year old brothers that also played football, rather than 5-year olds. Without the rule, coaches could obtain an impermissible advantage in recruiting two-for-ones. I think the same problem occurs with eligible twins. You cannot provide housing or food for a recruit’s brother to escape the limitations on official visits/contact.

Being a Georgia Tech fan, I have to credit Coach Richt. The NCAA needs to be changed. The NCAA does not pay federal taxes and their managment people make very good money. Coach Richt is a stand-up coach and as a fan, I’m glad he’s Georgia’s coach! This surely demonstrates the true character of this man. I tend to believe that he does love his coaches and players and their families and has a heart to help ensure they are treated fairly. A good man to work for and a great man to play for.. no matter what the record!

Maybe that’s why he doesn’t over-sign, he knows in his heart and soul it’s not right to do and he walks and talks his beliefs. If I were a coach or recruit, would this be the type of person I would want to be around? Me personally, the answer is yes, I would always know he cares.

I wish him the best now and in the future..

Anyone want to venture a guess how many paychecks, pay raises, or paid for bowl trips Adams and Evans missed? Thank goodness AD Greg McGarity is a professional who is running the athletic department in a much better businesslike manner.

Now that the AJC’s crack investigative team has filed their Open Records requests at The University of Georgia exposing these horrible violations CAN YOU APPLY THE SAME STANDARDS TO GEORGIA TECH? One of the main reasons UGA refused to pay these coaches is due in large part to your President Adams, and your former Governor Sonny “Goober” Perdue, having this pipe dream of making UGA a “Research Institution” along the lines of The University of Chicago, Duke, UNC, and Stanford. It was an ill advised and more than anything an ARROGANT AND POORLY THOUGHT OUT DECISION.. Now, after committing millions to Capital Improvements and hiring “research” professors AT A PREMIUM, Adams is finding out it’s a little too competitive out there for research grants. Combine that with the lack of tax dollars and the competition for those dollars by other in state schools like President DAN PAPP’S up and coming KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY, and UGA has some financial challenges, to say the least. Now you see Adams and his cronies at the University desperately seeking research dollars by putting out hilarious press releases touting that UGA has discovered a cure for cancer! So typical. Adams and Goober owe the people of the State of Georgia an apology for their ARROGANCE. No wonder they can’t pay coaches. What a pipe dream.

I’m with Captain. I still don’t understand how Georgia Tech was being investigated by the NCAA for TWO YEARS and we never heard a peep out of the AJC about it. Even the most delusional of Tech fans has to admit there is some kind of double standard at work here. Its just a matter of what that double standard is. Either the AJC scrutinizes UGA more or Georgia Tech isn’t as forthcoming about all of its transgressions. Its probably a little bit of both.

Under the table is considered unethical or illegal…neither apply here. This was simply a good man coming out of his own pocket to help an underpaid employee. Nothing illegal or unethical about this, and the NCAA rule he unknowingly violated in doing so what not actually intended to prevent this. It was intended to prevent systematic corruption.

You people calling out “corruption” and “crooked program” are wishful that it was far more severe for UGA, but deep down you really wish you had someone in your program that cared that deeply about his staff, and his dedication to those he works with. Indeed, this gives a sharp glimpse into the relationship between Evans and Richt, but it does not mean that they disliked each other. Richt knows that UGA can provide pay that equals that of similar schools and he wanted to keep his word to his coaches and their families. He used HIS OWN MONEY. This tells me one fantastic thing about Coach Richt…he’s not going to cut and run for more money as the majority often do. Mark Richt is our coach and every Dawg should rejoice in that fact. The man is nothing but exemplary class. These rules are more like ‘Big Brother’ anyway and they go way too far. The big difference between UGA and South Carolina’s infractions is that SC’s were discounts given by boosters and hotel operators. For UGA it came out of Richt’s own money. I’m actually PROUD OF THIS!!!

Was doing what’s right means breaking a rule, then does the coach get a pass and players don’t?
#3 This represents that the program is rife with coddling and lacks accountability. I could see if any of these folks were not making good money as it is. If they bought a house they couldn’t afford, UGA has plenty of housing available on campus…lmao.
#4Deserved incentives and bonuses are decided and paid by the Athletics Director, Athletics Department and the UGA Athletics Association. Although Richt has major input in this, he does not have final say so.

We have to pay $ 21.33 for the 5-year old’s plate of food ? I would like to see that plate of food. I bet you he ate no more than about $ 1.00 worth of the $ 21.33 of food the NCAA deems is EXCESSIVE and VIOLATION of their bloody rules that now we have to pay for.

The NCAA has done the same thing the EPA has done….gone overboard! Having rules about which side of one’s desk the pens can be on is ludicrous! I understand that there have to be rules and limitations, but the NCAA needs to dismantle and start over. What kind of organization ( a misuse of the term; sorry) denies a five year old kid a meal? There is such a myriad of B.S. rules that the Supreme Court could not figure them out, or probably even come up with when any of them are applicable. The NCAA is going through the same thing the federal government is going through. Too many people wanting to feel important by adding their little crap to the rules instead of good common-sense action, or inaction when applicable. Govern the programs, use common sense when necessary, and quit trying to see who can most trivialize what initially was started as a decent over-seeing body.

You know what? Many years ago, I was coaching my son’s baseball team, and I offered a dollar to any kid that hit a home run. I now realize that was probably an improper action, in that this might be perceived as making these 12 year olds professional. So, please tell the NCAA I am sorry, but in my defense, I, just like Cam Newton, had no knowledge of any wrong doing. PS. Mark Richt is still a class act.

Rule Man,

you need to brush up on how a big athletic dept. is organized. Almost every athletic dept. in the NCAA has at least two lawyers whose job it is, is to make sure the school is in compliance with the NCAA rules, a book that now consist of over 300 pages. A coach can not possibly keep up with the changes let alone, the whole book. When secondary violations are reported, they are usually self reported after these lawyers discover them. It is a shame that you have to have lawyers to interpret the dang book in the first place. There is a lot of stuff in the rule books that needs to be updated and some leave way given on the rules. They are just plain rigid and do not take into account, the circumstances at the moment, the rule was broken. You need look no further than, citing a violation for giving a kid that is five years old, a meal. This is just sad. Like this kid is going to grow up, follow in his brothers foot steps and remember, “When I was 5 years old, UGA gave me a happy meal”, while I was there with my family, while my brother was getting recruited”. If the kid were say, a sophomore or better in high school, I could see the reasoning there. But do, you really think, the player is going to remember that UGA gave his 5 year old sibling a meal, and therefore sign with the team, based on that alone, or will it even have any affect on his decision.
You can go and do a search and get a copy of the NCAA bylaws as relates to athletics on the internet. After about 60 pages, you will be amazed at what some of these rules are. I did, and after those 60 pages I came to the conclusion, that paranoia rules the NCAA. If you write them asking a question about a certain rule, you will get a nice little form letter stating that a regular review is done every couple of years. They claim they do not have enough staff to adequately monitor their rules on a more timely basis. Usually, their review consist of checking anything that a member school is questioning. The bureaucracy within the NCAA offices, almost rivals that of the federal government. CMR is an upstanding coach and man, and I am sure UGA is damn glad to have him. If there were more coaches like him, they wouldn’t need 300 pages of rules and regulations.

Such simple minded reaction from most of the posters…the rules are there because in the past schools have used these seemingly innocent acts to cheat like hades.

That is what most people simply don’t want to acknowledge…the cash battles of the past by programs like Clemson, Alabama and yes even UGA for players have lead to many of these seemingly bizarre rules.

If the NCAA pinheads can take away Tech’s ACC champ for $300 in clothing then they can punish UGA for these CMR payments as well. My point here is that neither act is worthy of any concern. The NCAA needs a job. Since the BSC took over the bowl system the NCAA has nothing to do other than take money from the members and run March Madness. Earlier this year from the ajc:

CMR talking: “Within the last year, I read this book, “The Hole in Our Gospel,” written by Richard Stearns. He’s the president of World Vision, U.S. I think people understand who World Vision is but, basically, they help the poor. Through their organization, you can help children, you can help build wells, you can buy them donkeys, whatever people need. World Vision helps people across the world. Well, anyway, there was a lot of statistical data in there about the amount of people that live on a dollar a day around this world. Billions of people. So I’m reading this book and it really affected me. It helped me realize that what we have is way more than we need and that our ability to give is hindered by this property. I guess that’s the best way to tell you. We just wanted to be in a better position to give and bless people that don’t have anything. We felt like this was one way to be able to do that.”
The house and surrounding acreage was listed for $1.99 million on May 17. Richt had the Hart County home built in 2009, about the time his oldest son Jon Richt signed a scholarship to play football at nearby Clemson University. Jon Richt transferred to Mars Hill College shortly after Tommy Bowden was dismissed as Clemson’s coach.
Richt makes more than $3 million a year as Georgia’s coach and has earned more than $25 million in income from UGA since being hired in 2001. So it’s not like he can no longer afford it or is concerned that, without the Georgia job, eventually won’t be able to.
“Our ability to own this home, to have this home, that’s not an issue,” Richt said Wednesday. “It has absolutely nothing to do with anything that has to do with football. It has to do my wife’s desire and my desire to give.
“I was actually compelled to do this much earlier,” he added. “I made the decision to do it a while ago but I didn’t want to do it during the season or during recruiting because I knew it would be blown out of proportion. But it’s been on my heart for a long time, so we’re just going ahead and doing it.”
As for the book that served as Richt’s inspiration, you can read about it HERE. Stearns writes that 40 percent of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day and 15 percent of the world’s people, about 1 billion people, live on less than $1 a day. The United States, on average, lives on $105 a day, the book claims.
“I’d challenge anybody to read this book and not be affected by it, Richt said. “We just live in such wealth here in America. And I’m talking about everybody. Anybody who’s making 30 grand a year is extremely wealthy compared to rest of the people in the world. These kids, these families will walk two or three miles, half a day or more, to get water that’s really not healthy. They’re drinking stuff that’s not safe for them. Then children die of AIDS, they die of malaria and they die of dehydration. Kids end up dying or the parents die and they’ve got nothing.
“This book just talks about how much of that is going on around the world and, if it was sitting right outside our door, what would we do about it? It’s a very compelling book. Compelling enough for me to say, ‘you know what, I don’t want to pour money into a home like that when I can use it for better things, for eternal things.’ It was just very alarming to find out what’s going on out there and we need to do something about it.”
As has been Richt’s style, he’s doing more about it than selling off his property. He and his family are taking a trip to Honduras this summer with World Vision to observe and assist in the construction of water wells.
“If this situation gets people to read this book and gets people more interested in helping the poor, then I’m happy about it,” he said. “I hope other people respond. It’s a very compelling book and if people read it, I think they’ll understand where I’m coming from.”

Logical you are purposely overplaying the “we have rules for a reason” and you know it. As usual , your post are much more about partisan opinion than logic.

I absolutely agree that the rule is in place for a good reason. Things need to be held in check so that good, bad, or otherwise intentions don’t have to be determined. (except that the NCAA does indeed do that on random and varied occasions, while claiming not to, but that’s another story). So yes technically , you are correct. Nobody believes you are hanging on a technical point though.

But you are trying to describe the “act” as a much bigger issue, when in fact the school simply choose to report a technicality as a violation. READ the report. Richt has a history of compensating his staff out of pocket and it has always been perfectly fine in the past. With the NCAA. This was a case of the current AD just deciding to report it as a violation, because it wasn’t handled properly by the previous AD.

I’m somewhat surprised that many of my UGa brothers think it’s no big deal that Richt wrote checks under the table for thousands of dollars. Commendible? Yes. Illegal? Yes. I agree the meals for the 5 year old are rediculus. But the illegal lodging and transportation and illegal recruiting contact are somewhat alarming. These under the table payment issues could potentially open the door for further NCAA issues. This will complicate matters with regard to recruiting down the road.

Richt should personally be banned for ever coaching again at the FBS level to send a clear message of intolerance of such in-your-face insubordination and total disregard for the integrity of not only the NCAA but also of the University of Georgia whose decision it was to set salary and compensation levels. … A very sad day for all of Dawgnation and the NCAA.

There is no income tax on the transaction; it is covered by the above referenced IRS ruling. Coaching changes are one of the toughest things for recruits to deal with.

Whether it is a Head Coach, coordinator, or position coach, coaching changes often create a domino effect that often cause more changes and leave recruits uncertain.

Creekside cornerback and Auburn commit Joshua Holsey is experiencing this first hand, and although he is dealing with it well, he will be the first to admit that the lack of clarity is mentally taxing.

“I’m not really that affected by it right now, but I do think about it a lot,” said Holsey. “But if my position coach leaves, it would mean a lot.”

Holsey committed to the Tigers early in the process, but is now starting to realize that it may not have been for the best of reasons.

“I committed early because I was tired of the process and wanted to get it out of the way,” he said. “I wanted to be done with recruiting so I could focus on the season.”

Since his commitment, programs have not been shy about pursuing the Peach State prospect.

According to Holsey, two specific programs have come after him the hardest.

“Georgia and Alabama contact me the most,” he said. “Coach (Rodney) Garner contacts me from Georgia, and I know him well, and Coach (Kirby) Smart talks to my defensive backs coach and another coach contacts me.”

When asked if he was ready to open things up, Holsey made it clear that he didn’t want to comment, but he did reveal his intention to take some visits.

“I am trying to get some visits planned right now,” he said. “I know I’ll take a few, but I’m not sure to who or when I will take them.”

While the coaching changes have yet to take their toll on the four star cornerback, something definitely has him thinking about his future.

When asked if some other schools were on his mind, Holsey chose to keep things under wraps.

“No comment,” he said. “I’m still working things out, so no comment.”

You have to love Richt. Who else could commit rules violations and elevate himself as a human being at the same time?

The money to Johnson is a little strange, though. If the guy left UGA before obtaining 5 years of service, I wonder why Richt thought that he was entitled to the bonus. As I recall it, Johnson left voluntarily to take another job.

Regardless, how anyone could keep track of all these nitpicky rules is beyond me. It looks like being human is in itself an NCAA violation.

The NCAA is so archaic. At some point, the big boys will pull away and start their own league and leave the NCAA to pick on the little guys in the sport. The sad thing is that he would be a “repeat violator” if he righted these wrongs by paying them himself in the future. Coach Richt, just give em cash. It worked when a couple of “SEC schools” bought qb’s in the past. Or pay them through the church. That works too…

Jimmy the Greek, thanks for the sentiment, but 8 players receiving $14,000 and the HC knowing about it, but refusing to say anything is about the same as one player and a $300 outfit the coaches knew nothing about don’t you think? If you can’t see that, you are definitely not NCAA enforcement material. Oh, I guess they did lose out on a bowl they probably would not qualify for anyway.

BadDawg…..

Look at how many NFL players are from Florida in the last two to three years….and look at how many of them left early. That really hurt Florida. What your article failed to point out was that last years and this years Florida teams were extremely young…..a large portion of last year’s team was mad up of freshmen….and this year’s team was mostly freshmen and sophs…..not many players from those classes make all-SEC teams….but Florida will have a lot that make all-SEC teams in the next two years. It helps to understand what is going on with a program….its current situation…when you read articles like that. For example, 70 percent of the scholly players on Florida team last year were very talented freshmen, redshirt freshmen, and sophs. That bodes for a very good future in Gainesville, provided Brissett and/or Driskell live up to their billing and do not end up being the second coming of John Brantley.

[...] I Georgia, I wouldn’t just “self-report” this “secondary violation.” I’d shout it from the mountaintops. I’d make it the first sentence in Mark [...]

When you read how generous Richt is with his staff the first reaction is to praise him and admire the intent. I certainly feel that way because I think CMR’s integrity and moral way’s are sincere . Unfortunately a larger number of coaches don’t have any integrity, ethic’s or moral’s and because of that I am surprised giving money to your staff is only a secondary violation and not a major infraction.
Let’s say that Cantor, who received $10,842 had a Nephew or son who was a 5 star ,at whatever position ,and you started him at $200,000 per year which was a comparable salary to other recruiting assistant’s when that son or nephew was in the 10 grade . Most coaches would justify raising Cantor’s salary to $400,000 by the senior year hoping and knowing that would influence the son or nephew to sign with Georgia.
The NCAA is right this time because coaches would be throwing around money like crazy to their staff to influence family member’s to come to their school.

I at one time thought the BCS may be the straw that broke the NCAA’s back when it looked like we were going to four superconferences and setting up a real national championship tournament, but the way things are shaking out looks like the old fashioned bowl setups are too much of an allure, particularly for programs not in the championship hunt, that we may not get that definitive playoff the fans would like to see.

I think most UGA fans would think Auburn was the best game UGA played all year by far. That was the only time this season the staff and the players clicked on all cylinders. The Florida game was so so. Getting down 17-3 is unacceptable if you ask me. That huge 4th down conversion on 4th and forever and the screen to Demps on the first play. Then a kickoff return for a td. The good was Murray and his receiver made clutch plays when it counted and Richard Samuel helped run out the clock. The most I got out of that game is that this team was not quitters and not afraid of Florida like previous Georgia teams.

NCAA football is already in something of a no-man’s land, halfway between college/amateur athletics and being a farm system for the NFL. To those seeking to make this something bad….(aka the ajc and Tech fans)…read the proper response by someone more credible than this rag:

The audacity of Mark Richt

——————————————————————————–
By Chris Low

If you want some insight into how trivial some of the NCAA’s rules are, read through the report of Georgia’s latest internal investigation that uncovered a series of secondary violations by the Bulldogs.

That’s my first thought in hearing that Georgia coach Mark Richt was “guilty” of trying to help some of his former assistants and staff members with financial payments out of his own pocket that the school’s athletic association wasn’t willing to pay.

When I hear about nonsense like this, I can’t help but think back to SEC commissioner Mike Slive’s proposal aimed at getting rid of the ticky-tack NCAA rules and focusing more on bringing down the hammer on the egregious rule-breakers.

So what if Richt wanted to help out some of his longtime aides with money he felt they had coming to them?

It says something about Richt the man that he’d be willing to make such a gesture.

But then, Richt has always been more of a giver than a taker.

He shouldn’t be admonished, which was essentially the gist of his punishment. Rather, he should be celebrated.

College football needs more men like Richt, who endeavor to do more for others than they do for themselves.

I understand the rationale behind NCAA bylaw 11.3.2.2, which regulates supplemental pay for staff members.

But in this case, it was simply a head coach who makes $3 million per year trying to share the wealth with people who had worked so hard for him and people who weren’t making wads of money.

One of the things that really sticks out in the report is Richt going into his own pocket and paying more than $15,000 to non-coach staff members for bowl bonuses when the school refused to include those employees in their bonus structure because of “difficult economic conditions.”

I guess, technically, Richt is a rule-breaker.

He’s also a breath of fresh air in a sport that morphed into big business a long time ago.

Smart, honestly I could care less if Georgia Tech still had their ACC championship trophy, it has no bearing on me as a dawg fan. There is no question Georgia Tech earned the title in 2009 but unfortunately it was stripped from them by the NCAA. Richt and UGA according to the rules were in the wrong and they will be dealt with by the NCAA accordingly. You will get to celebrate once the NCAA hands out its punishment, just give it some more time.

Income. So whatever the rate is for the tax bracket the person is in.
I could careless what RICHT does with his money, but HOW he did this was against the rules. All the dawgs love to complain about everybody else if they do something that isn’t perfect. If happens now It is OK because it was RICHT. AltamahaDawg

So who should pay this “income tax” for the loan? Richt claimed it as income paid it once, “loaned” it to somebody and they need to pay tax, on money they received on a laon, which is Richt’s responsibility by your logic?

So you paid income tax on your motgage?

While I will ALWAYS hate the Dawgs on the field, I’ve got to give kudos to CMR. He IS a class act and has always behaved as such. The NCAA needs to go find something serious to dig on (Auburn, South Carolina, Alabama, Miami anyone?) and leave this man alone. They seem to have it in for the programs in Georgia in general. I mean, come on, they penalize Green over selling a freakin’ jersey? A jersey folks!! Ya, THAT sure sounds like a serious criminal violation to me!! lol. Or stripping a title because Thomas received a jacket — which he immediately turned over to the athletic department? Where does the NCAA witch-hunt end? And why do they generally ignore when things happen at northern schools or schools ranked in the top-10 (Can you say $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$?). I have to side with the Dawgs here — and that doesn’t happen very often ;) .But right is right — and wrong is wrong. And what the NCAA has done in the last 2 or 3 years is pretty much WRONG straight across the board!!! I can’t stand UGA, but CMR is a heckuva guy and did what was RIGHT.

Insubordination is about as bad as it gets. Going directly behind the backs of those who hired and overpaid him with this sort of scam. This is not a popularity contest. It shows signs of a lack of respect to the administration. Not to mention a covert attempt to gain popularity from the fans, knowing there would be a chance of exposure. Georgia’s success this season was a result of a soft schedule, not CMR. McGarity has to play politician on this one due to the power of the NCAA. I feel that the important thing is that the violations were openly reported. Great job Coach Richt and the rest of the staff. Anyone that thinks the political interests of the NCAA do not guide their rulings should look back to last year’s bowl game with Ohio State. It was clear that violations occurred that would result in suspensions if admitted, and Ohio State played their players anyway. Did they refund their bowl purse? Did the NCAA force them write Arkansas a check for the money they stole from them? I don’t know if they did or not, but I did not read anything on the matter. This is what you said yesterday : “Not a single first down in the entire half of a championship game, and didn’t get pulled? Les Miles was just playing favorites.”

All I said in reply is that Aaron Murray threw 51 passes to get 1 TD pass in our last game, LOST 10-42 as a result while THEIR quarterback only threw 13 passes yet MATCHED Aaron Murray’s 1 TD pass in his just 13 passes for the game. Aaron Murray also FUMBLED twice and threw 2 interceptions preceding his

BEING YANKED by MARK RICHT.

Now, what is you are WHINING ABOUT AltamahawDawg sir ?

That THAT QB was

NOT YANKED by Les Miles

Hey Bubba, it was OUR QB who was YANKED FOR OBVIOUS REASONS in the last game played.

Aaron Murray also was SACKED 4 times holding on to the football too long, not because our NFL senior-laded Offensive Line CANNOT BLOCK for passing downs. Sure they can. It was our QB. Mark Richt did NOT

I actually agree with the NCAA about the “rule”. Not sure why everybody is so down on them about this particular deal. It’s very reasonable that if HC are paying thier assistance outside of what the school has contracted for, they simply need to have it on record. It’s not hard to imagine the potential for abuse if left unchecked. According to the article, Richt has done this several times, and the NCAA has never sought to interfere. This is simply a case of the steps not being followed properly.

Hate that our football programs bring in so much $$$$ the non-coach staff is overlooked, but Richt sees that the water boy is just as important has his top coordinator. Morales and integrity … – Thanks for being a stand up guy Richt

Now let’s overhaul the NCAA and actually punish the right folks (like at OSU … punish the actual violators and stop taking education scholarships from kids that dream of playing at their favorite colleges), fine the coaches, the players that made the violations, the violators – don’t take money from the ENTIRE conference that effects the other schools when one doesn’t play in a bowl game. Think about the businesses that are effected when you sanction organizations for 5 years – the family owned bookstores, restaurants in the college town because you know ticket sales plummett and folks don’t attend games …. you aren’t punishing the school you are punishing the innocent. Regardless of Richt’s good intentions, this is another blunder along the lines of the “missing man” performance. Richt provides cash to staff members on a selective basis. There are IRS implications, as well as how this money was used–i.e. was it turned to cash and used for improper purposes? Probably not, but Richt has shown repeatedly that he disregards rules at will. Either Richt doesn’t know the rules, or he doesn’t care. This is EASILY the stupidest post of the day. Disregards the rules at will??? With all the other teams that get probation REGULARLY and UGA does not, you somehow come up with that? As for the IRS, you have no idea if those coaches claimed this money as income because if they did, there is nothing to report. Point is, since you don’t know, you are just running your trap trying to find something negative to say. No, this is totally incorrect, AltamahaDawg; these monies involved here from Mark Richt to assistant coaches on his staff are not a tax free loan, but INCOME. There is no other interpretation of the funds paid for services rendered. They will have to amend their income tax statement to the IRS and pay the late-fee penalty if what they turned in for each coach is that it was a Tax Free Loan. In no way, do any of these monies represent monies that are a Tax Free Loan.

A then assistant football coach provided a loan of between $70 and $100 to a then student-athlete to pay for the balance of an airline ticket that the young man utilized to travel home for Christmas; further, a representative of the institution’s athletics interests provided this cash to the then assistant coach, and, finally, after the student-athlete returned from the Christmas vacation, he repaid the money to the then assistant coach who subsequently returned the money to the representative.”

S. David Berst, NCAA Assistant Executive Director for Enforcement
Galen Hall denies this; but, I provide to you the facts only of why the NCAA put Florida on PROBATION in FOOTBALL and forced the firing of Galen Hall, which is the statement you made.

We therefore find your post WITHOUT MERIT, and 100 percent directly in contradiction with the facts of why Galen Hall was fired at Florida.

WHAT GALEN HALL DID has NOTHING to do with Mark Richt. Nice 6-6 season there Florida, worse than any Florida team since 1979.

TOTALLY 100 PERCENT IN-CORRECT. There is NOTHING about paying sums of monies to a person or to persons on your staff that can remotely be construed as a GIFT, when what they are is simple enough : Payment for services rendered to the boss to make the pay equitable as requested of the University of Georgia by said coach to said staff of his.

THIS IS NOT A GIFT and use of Form 709 would be in DIRECT VIOLATION of the Tax Code in these cases. It is payment for work to the employee by his boss when the company refused to give them the raise the boss requested in good conscious. If you don’t know what you are talking about, preface your post with “I don’t know.” This is INCOME to the staff, that’s period – NOT A GIFT. Jeez, how simple can all this be ?

It’s funny how Mark Richt is being praised for paying coaches out of his own pocket and Galen Hall was fired at UF for doing the same thing. And UF got probation and a bowl ban as a result.

Dawg fans are oxy morons. Richt broke a ncaa rule that has been on the books for decades. It’s not relevant that you agree with the rule. What is relevant is that he broke the rule along with many other violations.

The football program should count their lucky stars that they got off as light as they did for the plethora of violations.

jboro, you sort of cut out a selected part of that quote. The point I have made several times is that some intentions are good, some intentions are bad. That’s why i’st simply a procedural rule so that there is some record of it.

There is absolutely NO NCAA rule that prevents giving money to an assistant out of Richt’s pocket “same as giving to a poor family”. He has done it before and was perfectly fine. THIS was simply a case where the documentation was not handle properly. I would say thats why the NCAA so casually dismissd it.

But surely we all can envision a case of some HC having paid under the table coaches to gain some competitive advantage, (in some manner other than this) and I think we would all want that to at least “be acknowledge” by the school. That’s the only requirement in this rule.

It’s my hobby, and it’s part of my job being detailed in computers as I am and have been since graduating and getting all these computer offers. I tried to stay out of it, when I graduated telling them I didn’t know anything about computers. That didn’t get past them, not with my grades in the field. I built my 1st pc in 1977. Ran Double-DOS on an AT. Had 2 BBS same time, just exactly like this blog with 2 separate phone numbers into it. I did not invent the Internet but I have been on Access Atlanta since that time. The Internet actually started a decade before that, and I studied it at UGA. In fact UGA was a big part of that early Internet – Arpanet – it was called. Later I worked on DOD projects. Been a lot of fun. Met some great folks. Did you know software bugs came from actual real bugs in our computer room ? They would fly into the cathode ray tubes and die in there and we had to have CE go in middle of night and replace the cathode ray tube. Thus bug in the stored program software. Funny, coach Richt’s financial givings is secondary violation but Saban and Myer always on ESPN Gameday…CBS (Prior to SEC Championship, Natonal Championship) games arguing their cases for playing for a national championship is not. Call one of these networks and ask what a 30 second commercial cost on one of these games. Its called marketing and when these few coaches and teams get all this air time on these networks it gives them a big time recruiting advantage.

I truly believe Coach Richt and his staff will soon get a title. I also believe they will do it the right way….they’re going to earn it… Its going to take UGA going underfeated and dominate to do it however. History has proven there will be no advantages, no consideration given this team…the title will have to EARNED and UNDENIED! NO MERCY DAWGS lets FINISH THE DRILL!!!

Jack, when CMR gets UGA to another SECCG, UGA will get air time, win the SECCG, UGA will get even more air time. Because if UGA wins the SECCG, more than likely they will be in the NC game. Lots and lots of air time.
