ATHENS – Georgia backup quarterback Hutson Mason said he is seriously considering transferring due to a lack of playing time behind starter Aaron Murray.
Mason, a sophomore from Marietta, said he would prefer to remain at Georgia — “I love this place even more than I expected,” he said – and would consider taking a redshirt year next season to put a year between him and Murray.
In any case, Mason said he will have to make a decision after the Bulldogs’ season is completed with the Jan. 2 Outback Bowl against Michigan State.
“I’ll just try to sit back and get away from the every day stuff and people telling me what I should do,” Mason said. “I’ll go home after the bowl game and talk to my family and talk to people I look up to. I talked to D.J. Shockley. He’s somebody who has been very valuable to me. I’m just trying to look at it from every angle. I ponder on it a lot and it’s extremely tough.”
Mason (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) signed with Georgia in 2010 after becoming the state high school record holder for passing yards (4,560) and touchdowns (54) as a senior at Lassiter High. But after his second full season with the Bulldogs, he has gotten minimal playing time and then only in mop-up duty.
In two seasons, Mason has appeared in eight games, completing 57 percent of his passes for 356 yards with 3 TDs and no interceptions. His first college play from scrimmage was a TD pass to Logan Gray.
“He’s got an uncanny ability to hit the open receiver,” quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “He has great vision and feel. He has great pocket presence and a very quick release. He throws all the intermediate balls extremely well. The deep ball is something we continue to work on that he’s got to improve on. But his ability to get rid of the ball quickly and spread it out underneath, he does very well.”
Bobo said that the Bulldogs are considering redshirting Mason next season and have current redshirt freshman Christian LeMay and walkons handle the backup duties. But it’s not something they’ve decided on yet.
“It’s something we’re going to talk about after the season,” Bobo said. “I’d rather not get into it now.”
Redshirting is something Mason said he would consider.
“I would. It’s something I’ll have to sit down and talk to Coach Richt about and see how they feel about it,” Mason said. “I don’t think that would be something that they’d be opposed to. I want to stay here. I really do. I want to be here; I want to be at UGA. I love this place more than I expected I would. My goal is to stay here and I want to stay here. I just need to find out whether that allows me to play the most or not.”
Mason probably would have played more by now if he hadn’t been behind one of the most durable quarterbacks in the business. Despite taking numerous shots the last two seasons, Murray has missed only a couple of snaps in any significant, meaningful games.
“You can’t take away from Aaron being that tough,” Mason said with a laugh. “It’s just the way the ball rolls. You see guys have severe injuries when they barely get hit and then you see Aaron take a shot like he did against Auburn, where he did a quadruple flip and landed on his neck. I’m like, ‘he’s got to come out after that.’ But he just gets up and trots back to the huddle.”
Malcome on top of depth chart
Redshirt freshman Ken Malcome is currently running No. 1 at tailback for the Bulldogs. Leading rusher Isaiah Crowell is No. 2 and Brandon Harton is No. 3.
That’s the way it was as of Saturday, at least, as Richard Samuel (ankle) and Carlton Thomas (knee) remained sidelined. Samuel, however, was able to practice in a limited role on Saturday. He is returning for the bowl from Nov. 1 ankle surgery.
“We expect both those other guys back, but it’s hard to have a real full-fledged competition when they’re not getting an reps,” Bobo said. “So Ken and Isaiah and Brandon are the only three we’ve got right now.”
Injury update
Starting right guard Chris Burnette did not at practice Saturday due to an illness, line coach Will Friend said. . . . Middle linebacker Mike Gilliard (ankle) and defensive end DeAngelo Tyson (ankle), both starters, still were not practicing on Saturday. . . . Wide receiver Rantavious Wooten, out since late September with a concussion caused by a car accident, is practicing in a green jersey. He will not play in the bowl, however, to preserve a medical redshirt season.

Mason redshirting would be great long-term for the Dawgs. Murray is really growing into a great quarterback, and demands all of the snaps. Having Mason for one year when Murray graduates would allow the Dawgs not miss a step at the all-important quarterback position!

I think Mason is a more durable QB in the long run and could get us back to Stafford like days. I have said over and over again. Mason can see over the line more than Murray can. I believe his passes will be more accurate and well floated for recievers to catch. Not taking anything away from Murray. He has done a great job….in a mediocre situation. If its mediocre you want. Murray is your guy to get you by. If you want excellence I believe Mason and Lemay both have it.

There were so many games when we had the big lead and Murray played on and on. Don’t know if they were trying to build up his stats or just trying to avoid a QB contraversy. I think Mason would outperform the short man if given the chance.
Except for Shockly, Richt is very poor at getting his back ups PT or having them ready when they are needed. He has been this way from the beginning.

this is typical of RIcht and Bobo. They always play their favorite, and they never give anyone a chance, because they dont want everyone to see that they made a mistake. Murray is a joke, and he is terrible in ball protection whether it be ints, or fumbles. Plus the fact he cant throw a deep ball to save his life. Yet Richt and Bobo will get raises for playing favorites and UGA fans can only sit there and ask why. McGarity is an idiot to allow this B.S. to continue. He is a joke as is Richt and Bobo. Get ready for 5 more years of this pathetic coaching and player evaluation, and one more thing, get ready to finish 4th in SECE, because this recruiting class is pathetic.Bama has more commitments from the state of Ga. for 2012 class than UGA. And 5 of them are rated in top 100, this is pathetic and unacceptable, yet this clown McGarity is going to reward this head coach with a raise and extention. UGA is not in good hands with McGarity. He said earlier that it takes more than one dream team to build a championship team, you must have a dream team every year to compete for championships in the SEC. What the hell happened to his comments. Oh i forgot, Adams runs the UGA football program. Just proves that McGarity is full of hot air, and he is again nothing more than a yes man to Adams. McGarity has no authority what so ever as it relates to the football program. So now Richt and Bobo have run off 2 Q.B.s that are better than Murray. Mett, and now Mason. When Bama lines up Jenkins, Tomlinson, Lee, and the top 2 players in the USA next year the tackle from Grayson, and Rueben Foster, that will be 5 of their starting front 7 on defense from Ga. That is the most pathetic job of recruiting i have ever seen, yet this clown RIcht and his coaches get raises and extentions. If this guy was in sales or any other profession he would be fired. But the idiot McGarity gives him an extention. And UGA fans wonder why UGA is playing second fiddle to Bama and LSU. Just look at the A.D, and the head coach. Richt is a total joke, and UGA will NEVER win an SECC with this clown. My God McGarity, grow a pair of balls, or go back to Florida where there A.D. would never put up with RIcht and his medioce program

Murray having two years left, we will lose Mason or LeMay. The only way to save both of them would be to red shirt Mason next year. Then he would have one year as quarterback as a senior and the following year would be LeMay’s year. Either that or go to a two quarterback system. This is a good problem to have and as long as we continue to recruit good athletes we will always have this problem.

I certainly understand Mason’s situation. CMR stays with his qb through thick and thin, and that’s not always a good thing. While Murray has progressed nicely, there have been many times when Murray has struggled and CMR did not give Mason a chance to play. While I hope he stays, I would not blame Mason for transferring. Now the redshirt thing is an interesting possibility, but then you run into the Lemay situation and future qb recruits. There are places around that probably need someone of his ability as the SEC was not blessed with very good qb’s this year. And, if he goes down a notch, he does not have to sit out a year.

I would not blame Mason for leaving. He should have gotten more playing time. The trouble is, with our coaches, we are always in desperation mode, so we have to keep Murray in there as long as he can handle it, because we never get enough ahead.
Even with ten wins, we were playing desperation football – remember those fourth-down TD passes? We did those because we didn’t trust our place-kicker. But if we could make fourth-down TD passes, why not make them on the second or third down? (maybe because we were TRYING to run the ball?

I predicted Mason would have to transfer for a fair chance at getting some playing time. And no one can blame him because he would be crazy to backup Murray, when the idiot coaches don’t have enough guts to open the quarterback competition. Murray doesn’t have a single win over a top twenty school in two years as a starter. He played poorly vs. LSU and clearly is not even an average professional prospect. I’ve seen many QBs at UGA and Adam Murray has as good a chance at the pros as Joe Cox ! LOL ! Murray is the Richt/Bobo braintrust’s favorite and that’s why he will never be a NFL QB because of it. Forget all of the meaningless stats, Murray wasn’t considered for one post-season award, and that says it all. He can’t win a big game and for Georgia to improve at QB, Richt has to open up an un-biased competition for the starting QB job. But he and Bobo aren’t that smart because they play their favorites. Poor D.J. Shockley is out of football now and really is regretting the day he listened to Richt and wasted three years of eligibility on the UGA bench, when he clearly was a Division I starter QB elsewhere. So let’s wish Mason a fond farewell and good luck in the future. Sorry the goon offensive coaches lied and lured you to Georgia just to waste your talent and eligibility. Richt + Bobo = Talent Vampires ! To all top high school QBs out there come to UGA while Richt is here at your own risk. When Richt comes a knocking at your door: Just say NO Dawgs !!

With a redshirt year Mason would be sitting well to be the Dogs starter in 2013 if Murray decides to go pro after his junior year. Aaron Murray reminds me so much of another Aaron up there in green Bay. The offers will come. The question is will Murray want to leave early for the NFL or play his senior season.
Mason will eventually be the starting QB in Athens. The real question is does he want to be at UGA where he is happy or go to a program where they promise him the starting job and find out he is not happy there and the starting job does not work out there either. Case in point is that talented QB who left Oregon and went to Old Miss and he did not mesh with the players there and everyone was unhappy. Ny the way that was the beginning of the end for the Old Miss HC that just left.

2. Even when Murray throws 3 interceptions, Richt won’t get Mason touches

Except the Auburn game, UGA struggled to keep the lead all season long even with the weakest schedule in years. That’s why Mason never got a chance is pondering leaving.
But think back, UGA rarely has a smooth QB transition. Always previous QB jumps out with all play time, and new one jump in with no prior play experience.

Hutson looks to be a fine quarterback. It would be nice if we could get him more playing time and fit him in with Christian. But, it looks like that is going to be tricky to make that work. I do agree that he should have gotten more time in some of the games where we did get a lead. But, Coach Richt has addressed that: he was concerned about pulling his starter too early. Maybe in hindsight he would have done it differently.
To the fools who keep trying to insult Aaron, do you not realize he shattered the all-time UGA record for touchdown passes in a season. Do you not realize he is one of the best running QBs we have had too? Yes, his teams have not won against our best opponents, but do you really think that is all HIS fault? Did you not see the dropped passes in the LSU game? Yes, he made mistakes in the South Carolina game, but did he allow the fake punt touchdown by a lineman? Was he responsible for the defensive lapses in the BSU game? Did he help AJ sell his jersey and cause him to be suspended for the first four games last year? Yes, he threw the game ending interception against FLA last year, but he also lead the comeback that tied the game up. Was he not the winning QB in the 10 straight games that we won this year, including “big games” over Fla., Auburn and Tech? That’s some serious hate or envy against this guy. Whoever you are, you are going to look like an even bigger fool when he leads UGA to victory next year over and over.

If a man gets to this level and realistically knows he isn’t as good as a starter should be, then focus on academics solely and a career without football is a must. However, if one feels he has the talent and potential to start or play significant minutes, then why not look out for yourself and transfer?

Also, competition at QB should be done. This by no means is a diss to Aaron Murray. But we have all agreed that one of UGA’s major problems is a sense of entitlement and a lack of depth behind the starters. We have all witness how having a “hot seat” brings about better results.

I have to agree with GTBob, The only comparison you can make between Aaron Murray and Aaron Rodgers is their first names and that is about it.
Dawgvoiceofreason,
Are you really still bragging about those 10 lousy wins? Also last time I checked Aaron Murray is 0-8 versus AP top 25 teams. He pads his stats versus poor defenses. I could care less if the kid broke all the ncaaf records for passing yards, tds, etc… see Timmy Chang if he does not win the big games then none of it really matters. Furthermore Murray was handed the quarterback job no other quarterback was really given a shot to compete with except for the dismissed Zach Mettenberger. Why not see what Hutson Mason and Christian Lemay can do?

It’s a pleasant problem to have for UGA. A surplus of quality quarterbacks. If Richt recruited running backs the way he recruits QBs, UGA would be really tough.
I am sure Mason will act in his own best interest, as he perceives it, I just hope the coaching staff is upfront with him. Sounds like this LeMay is a good one also. I know they are only 17 or 18 year olds, but why more thought doesn’t go into what the competition is going to be

Satchel Buzz, I’m pretty sure Ken Malcome did most of his damage in the Tech game on one drive. He actually had a modest 13 carries for 39 yards but UGA did not even try and establish the run versus Tech until the 4th quarter because the passing lanes were wide open for Aaron Murray.

If Mason should transfer believe he loses one year eligibility giving him only one year to play, unless he went to a FBS school.

Things keep getting worse for the gaytors. If coaches and players and commits leaving every day was not bad enough, the ncaa is reported to be visiting early next year to investigate. Too much of that gatorade money has been ending up in players pockets and the nccaa can’t ignore it any longer.
Urban may have sold out his former team which would explain why ohio st is being allowed to have two staffs. Any way you look at it uf is in serious trouble and no one can give a reason to think things will be better any time soon.

If he does, he gets to start a season for the dawgs; if he does stay and never starts over LeMay, then he knows he wasn’ quite good enough to be an SEC starter anyway. Either way, he is a very good quarterback, and a DGD! The Tide is going to beat LSU for UA’s 14 MNC, but UA is likely to slip for a couple of years. I expect UGA-LSU in next year’s SECCG again. This time the teams will be more evenly matched. Screw Mettenberger!

The Dawg has turned!
Richt will steer him in the right direction. We have a lot of great QB’s and another one coming in Ramsey who is Stafford-like and possibly the #1 QB in HS on the planet. He will be a freshman in 2013 since he is still a junior in HS. Look for him to start in 2015 for sure after a redshirt. Unless Lemay or Mason doesnt pan out and/or have transferred. Then 2014.
It is going to be very interesting. Murray: Will he stay or go after 2012? If he goes that would open up 2 years for Mason and 3 years for Lemay What will Mason do? Transfer, redshirt leaving 2013 & 2014 or play in 2012 if Murray goes down? He must be thinking what if I redhirt AND Murray leaves early? What will Lemay do if Mason redshirts leaving him & Mason with equal eligibility? THEN will Ramsey have to sit for 2 seasons until 2015? He will likely be THE #1 QB in the nation out of HS in 2013. It will all work out but it will be interesting to see how it plays out!

If I were Mason I would transfer. I would find a coach that needs a passing QB that would almost certainly guarantee a start and go for it. If he transfered to another FBS school I would make sure the QB was a senior with the backup being a senior if possible. Or transfer to a top FCS school and play immediately. My nephew signed a college basketball scholarship about 10 years ago and was starting to see good playing time as a freshman. Then sprained and ankle late in the season. The next year they brought in one of the top freshmen in the south and he suddenly couldn’t break the starting lineup, and it looked like it might be his senior year before he could. He transfer to a smaller school being an immediate starter and played in the national tournament back to back years making it to the final 8 then final 4. He said being in the game is a lot more fun than sitting onthe bench at any level.
Like I said, Mason has too much talent, if he were my son, we’d be finding another school. I wish he would stay, but Murray is on pace to break all Georgia’s passing records and Bobo isn’t going to let anything get in the way of his legacy of coaching the all time passing leader at Georgia.

Hudson take a good long look in the mirror and if you see Joe Cox looking back you’ll know it’s time to leave. Could it be that Richt never saw anything but the bench that so many QBs waste away on the bench at UGA? It’s funny that we want depth with game experience in all positions but QB. I hope you playing time in the bowl game. Reading the Michigan papers it looks as they feel a major key to winning is to get to Murray. Chris…..
Jacoby Brissett is going to be an outstanding QB in the SEC…..and so might Jeff Driskell. Muschamp likes these two so much he isn’t even recruiting a QB this year. Florida does not need Nelson as a safety……they are loaded at that position. He will be a WR at Florida….and Auburn is recruiting him as a WR as well. Georgia, I believe, wants him as a safety.

bitter qb seriously????
oour big game this year have been boise st, south carolina, florida, auburn, georgia tech, and lsu
Boise St- I’ll admit murray played awful but he had little blocking and no running game and young receivers
South carolina- He played great we scored 45 points. The interception was bad but what qb doesn’t throw interceptions (though it was costly). The fumble wasn’t his fault cuz cordy glenn got blown past and murray didn’t see him coming
Florida- He played great
Auburn- Playd great
Gt- Played great
Lsu- Murray started off good, but yes he turned the ball over too much. He played ok considering he only had blocking the first quarter, he had no running game, and his receivers dropped 4 to 5 balls including 2 touchdowns

Mason is a good athlete, no doubt & I hope he does well regardless of the decision he makes.
However, I would like to ask all of you who suggest his apparent superior exploits of the LSU defense would be the norm in his future opportunities to consider the following:
…Mason appeared superior because the LSU wasn’t prepared for him as a quarterback…they had prepared for Murray. Case in point, GA shut down TN Vol QB Bray earlier this year because GA prepared for Bray, but when he was injured, their backup QB (Simms) almost beat GA with his heroics. Every other defense shut him down because they prepared specifically for him as a QB & he was eventually replaced by a Freshman QB.
After suggesting this as a possibility, I still believe that Mason can, and will develop into a good SEC QB. If memory serves right, wasn’t UGA the only school to aggressively recruit Mason and make an offer? And, wasn’t that offer based on his Sr year in stats alone?
In addition, you might consider that Murray has that instinct to win and simply finds a way to do it. Yeah, I know many will say that he hasn’t beaten a top 20 team, but, then again, he can’t play all 22 positions at the same time for every game. He does his part & somehow manages to keep fighting. He did it in high school, has done it these last 2 yrs & will continue to do so as long as he is in football. He may not throw the best spiral, but he won’t quit. He always works to get the job done.
Football has always been more enjoyable to watch with people like Murray…he may not quite be there yet, but his actions remind me of Y.A. Tittle, Joe Kapp, Sonny Jerguson, Roger Staubach & even though many of you won’t like it, Tim Tebow. All of these were highly criticized, but given time, they won because they didn’t know how to quit.

Murray’s okay. Nothing more, nothing less. Yes, he had some drops in the first qtr, but re-watch the game, he missed wide open guys the rest of the night. The fumble in the third qtr was terrible, he threw another pick 6. In the USC game, he threw a pick 6, and would’ve had two, if we didn’t tackle the guy on the 3 yd line. Regardless of Glenn missing a block, he’s got to tuck the ball away. I was at the game against LSU and listening to the radio broadcast, and even Zeier said, at least 7-8 times, “Murray’s got to hit him right there, he was open”. And let’s not even talk about the Kentucky game, that was probably his worst game of the year. He’s decent, no where close to being ‘great’. And one more thing, Bobo has totally had to abandon the screen pass, one of the staples to our offense, because Murray CAN’T complete that throw.
Not hating, just sayin…

Seems like congratulations are in order for the University of Georgia for great news as related in a front page story in today’s AJC. From reading the story, it seems as though UGA has played a leading role in developing a vaccine that shows much promise as a potential cure for at least some forms of cancer. I hope you all read the news story. I give credit to the paper and the reporter covering this momentous news. Of course, as with all of this type of medical research, it may well be another 10 years before the treatment is marketed. UGA was very smart is getting a patent in the schools name–much $$$ to be derived from this. It is hard to argue with Murray’s results this year. He won 10 games, had great stats (only behind Tyler Wilson at Ark). But there is something about Murray that just doesn’t have the “wow” factor. Maybe it is because he has stretches where he goes 0-9, 0-5 and then goes 5-5and 6-6. In the big games, USC, fl and LSU he was very shaky. I know LSU makes every qb look shaky, but the USC and fl games were games where he made mistake after mistake and then made a couple of great plays. How many pick sixes has he thrown this year? I don’t think he has that good of arm. Mason has a better arm but not the experience. who would do better next year? Maybe with more seasoned receivers Murray will be better.

MASON would SMOKE Murray if given the same chance. Murray has stats against CRAPY teams. MURRAY hasn’t done ANYTHING against ANYBODY but MASON was never given the chance. Murray is in the job because Richt and Bobo were too STUPID to play Murray more during the COX year. Yes Murray would have lost a year but he would have gained so much more. The coaches would know better that he isn’t the GOD of the SEC. Mason should have been playing more in the CC, NMS, UK, GT and LSU game. the Dawgs were not going to beat LSU and Mason could have learned a lot.

duh? the kid was an idiot to go to UGA to begin with. Same thing is going to happen to Marshall and/or Crowell. Only so much room on a depth chart. It’s one thing to be 2nd/3rd string at Bama or LSU and winning NC’s. But to be 2nd/3rd in an irrelavent program like UGA is suicide. These kids who go to UGA and throw away their careers are fools, are are getting paid very well by Randy Gardner, the former ‘runner’ at Auburn back in the day. These kids need to go someplace they can play, or if willing to be 2nd+ on the depth chart, should go to a top 10 program instead of a program that played 5 teams with a winning record, but still only finished 2-3 against the 5. Can you say mediocre.

Cordy has protected Murray fairly well this year Low Country Bulldawg. He is not even a true left tackle and the young man has done a heck of a job. Aaron Murray has not beaten a single quality opponent in 2 years as a starter. He was given the job after Mettenberger was dismissed and now with two other quarterbacks on the roster that could be just as good, they won’t even open the quarterback competition. I say open the competition to get the best qb in the game. The other guys deserve a shot too they have been working hard as well.

Mason has a nice touch on his passes, I think he throws a more catchable ball than Murray who sometimes throws too hard and is often inaccurate on long throws, Coach Richt does not like to make changes once he has made a decision, But you would think he would give Mason more playing time in case Murray was injured, If Mason wants more playing time he may well have to transfer or wind up competing with Lemay who may be the best QB at Georgia.

Cancer research is more important than this recreational blog, I’m sure we all agree.
Strangely enough, the comments on HM’s article about leaving have been understanding and insightful with many wishing him the best. I expected many “don’t let the door hit you in the butt” type comments. But, as one put it, “give the kid meaningful playing time in the bowl game and shut us all up about who is the right qb”. Jeez, Georgia puts 2 years of work into HM, try him before MAKING HM make a tough decision that may not be best for HM or Georgia!!! Someone !! Anyone!! Talk some sense into this Born Again coaches heart!! It’s business isn’t it? Is it fair to not give Murray a possible wake up call!! If Aaron survives as #1 it will be better for AM than this doubt!! Also, has Christian Lemay’s work ethic been enough to prepare him for his on field opportunity yet? Is he putting on weight? Is he learning the playbook?
I remember reading that early in HM’s senior year at Lassiter, that HM’s first offer was in the Big Ten to Iowa Hawkeyes. I quess a friend of his, a TE at Iowa got him noticed by their coaches. Interesting, that if he would have left his beloved State of Georgia for Iowa, he would probably have been their starting QB this past season. Now that is if he would have progressed as well with training under Iowa’s QB coach. Iowa fans think there is need for a coaching change at that position….so who know’s how the woulda, coulda, shoulda’s work out?
Be fair to Murray, the kid hears the doubt, give HM a chance in the final bowl game.

Hey I’m not too huge on the Auburn rivalry. I was just kidding though about Reggie Ball being dumb, he’s a good kid. That tandem Auburn had though was potent and it is impressive that Reggie got a win against those guys. Maybe Aaron Murray can beat a top ten team sometime in his career.

I heard there is a kid on one of UGA’s intramural flag football teams who can throw the ball a mile and run like the wind. Surely somebody who has never even set foot on a college practice field must be better than everyone else we have. If Richt and Bobo knew half as much as us bloggers, that intramural kid would be our starting QB and Georgia would have won the last dozen national championships. Why don’t they see how green the grass is on the other side of the hill?

No, the Greatest Pass in UGA history was the pass from Buck Belue to Amp Arnold in the waning moments against an over-sized Notre Dame to run out the clock and win the Consensus National Championship 17-10.
The Bulldogs took over with three minutes remaining, hoping to exhaust the clock. Highlighting the game’s waning minutes was Buck Belue’s first completion of the day to flanker Amp Arnold. The Bulldogs would go on to run out the clock on the game, and their national championship season.

Now the Richt/Bobo braintrust have decided to make Boo Malcome the starter now that UGA is decisive underdog in the Outback vs. Michigan St. Well why didn’t Richt and Bobo make this call vs. LSU in the SECCG ? No the man who knows “what the hell he’s doing”, starts lil ol’ 5-6″ Carlton Thomas and made injured Crowell his backup vs a talented two deep LSU defense. End result 42-10 LSU, and it could have been much worse. The Mad Hatter was having fun laughing on the sidelines and even I, a frustrated Georgia fan, laughed at the futility of Richt trying to challenge Miles. It was like Richt taking a pop gun to the Shootout at the O.K.Corral ! LOL ! Now UGA is facing it’s 4th loss against a team with a winning record. UGA is 10-0 versus bottom feeders, and will be 0-4 vs top twenty teams. Maybe Richt is feeling heat to win because his contract extension is on the table and put away pop-gun Thomas and finally installed big-gun Malcome to start at RB. Richt knows loss to MSU would expose him as a mediocre coach and validate not over-extending him. Point of this matter is Boo should have started in the SECCG, because he was the only healthy SEC-sized back in the stable, but Richt was not smart enough to start him because he was content to play to lose with smallish Thomas and a disabled Crowell. Why didn’t Richt and Bobo start Malcome in the SECCG? Why does QB Mason have to transfer? Why won’t anyone out there make a job offer to OC Bobo and why hasn’t he been demoted? Who lied and said Texas A&M had interest in Richt? Who started that lie that Adam Murray is a bona-fide NFL QB prospect in the mold of a Aaron Rodgers? LOL ! How bad will MSU beat UGA in the bowl? Why would UGA offer an extension to a coach who can no longer beat a ranked team? And finally, how much more coaching mediocrity must kool-aid drinking, homer Georgia fans ignore before they yell out : ENOUGH MEDIOCRITY IS ENOUGH? LOL ! (I’m tired of people laughing at UGA. I’m tired of people saying you guys can only beat Tech). All these dumb questions might go away in a couple of years when Jimbo Fisher fails at FSU and the Seminoles come and wipe the Richt problem off of UGA’s hands. Hopefully Richt will be back in Tallahassee at the end of 2013. Coach Grantham is a DGD at defensive coordinator and has the guts to make Dawgfans proud. He should definately be considered to replace gutless, holier than thou, Richt in 2014. WOOF, WOOF !!

Great Scott, the National Championship Game was against a great Notre Dame team whom Pundits ALL said that we would lose to. They said that Notre Dame was so huge. They said Notre Dame would wipe the floor with us. Even with Herschel Walker injured and having to have his separated shoulder put back in place by UGA doctors on the sidelines, Notre Dame should have beat us; but, we kept the football from Notre Dame and eating up the clock with 3 minutes left was unbelievable. I was there. Trust me on this, that Buck Belue pass to Amp Arnold won us the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

There was another Buck Belue to Amp Arnold pass directly in front of my season tickets that stands out in my mind too. And, I was at Jacksonville in 1980. Were you ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atA0UUI7-u4
Georgia tek had gone ahead 20 to nothing over us in 1978, right after I graduated, my 1st year in my season tickets. Ball right in front of me, now 4th Quarter down 21-28 at the moment. 4th Down. 3 to go from their 42 yard line. Buck Belue sprints to his right, everyone converges. He appears stopped up. They reach to tackle Buck. He jumps up and finds # 82 Amp Arnold streak down the right side line in front of my seats. The pass hits him in stride and he runs in for the touchdown.
27-28.
Vince calls timeout again. Go for 2.
Georgia tek by 1.
Going for the Win, not the tie at Sanford.
Railroad Tracks ROCKING.
2 point conversion. Buck Belue throws the pass near the goal line and 2 Georgia tek defenders are there. 1 draped across the back of our receiver. Penalty. Now, half the distance. Ball on the 1.
Buck Belue sprints left. Georgia tek Defenders breach the line and once again are all over Buck Belue. They reach to tackle him again, and he pitches the ball just as they do. 6′ 165 lbs. Amp Arnold # 82 lined up in the backfield behind Buck Belue and to his Left. Wide Open Amp gets the pitch and walks into the open end zone, everyone having converged on Buck Belue.
28-27.
Buck Belue had many great moments at Georgia and baseball was another of his sports; I should know. I watched those too.
Marquee Wins Buck Belue ?
Absolutely.

1 yard per rush on 7 rushing attempts per game career
Lost 40 percent of his games to-date in his career.
Lost 10 of 26 games fixing to be Lost 11 of 27.
Lost every game every team finishing top 25 in his career.
80 % of his TD Passes came against teams not 1 of which ended the season in any top 25 of any poll.
Only 20 % of this TD vs the teams who ended up in the top ranked teams, lost every one.
Consistently inconsistent.
Slow.
Small.
Throws passes behind receivers, over their heads, poor timing, horrid footwork, has passes batted down at the line, stares down receivers, does a poor job of going through his progressions, he calls his own name more than half the time, is a Ball Hog, and Holds the ball too long.
Prefers make OL look bad taking sacks than throw ball away.
Doesn’t want to ruin his passing percentage, which of course, if you add in his 48 sacks as an incomplete pass. Aaron Murray should have thrown the football away when he holds it too long and is sacked. A proper QB would have thrown it away instead of trying to make his stats look good in pass completion percentage, which you just know he knows that he is NOT ACCURATE. Instead of holding the ball too long, his pass completion ratio for his career is only
427 completions out of 765 attempts only 55 percent completions career.

Funny guy. The rest of us in here are talking about Hutson Mason and how he and Christian LeMay SHOULD have had more playing time.
That Aaron Murray has LOST 40 percent of his games.
That he has run up his stats 80 percent of his TD passes vs teams not 1 of which ended up a top 25 ranked team.
That he holds on to the football too long and has yet to beat a single team who ever has ended up in the top 25.

If Mason leaves, and it is probably the best move for him, LeMay, will be the backup and that will be the best move for UGA. LeMay might be ready to step up this year, with a year of learning the offense and all the practice he has had. It would appear prudent to me, to work LeMay slowly into some games, and if he really is as good as is claimed, I am sure, if Murray slipped up, LeMay could step in and hopefully do a good job.
I have confidence that the coaches went with the right guy this year. Our Ol line did a great job with rushing but not too great with the pass blocking. Murray can take a hit and get up. We don’t know, or didn’t know last year, whether Mason could do the same thing. If LeMay has put on a few pounds, he might be best to back up Murray anyway. With his speed, he adds another dimension to the QB play, and if I remember correctly, he has a rocket arm as well. We also have a 2012 recruit, named Eaton Bauta, who has good size, and he is also a dual threat back there, so we will still have good depth back there. Mason, I am afraid is like the meat between two slices of bread and I am not sure, that he can out shine Murray enough to warrant his starting over him. If LeMay is all he is advertised to be, he will probably spend this year backing up Murray and be ready to start next year. Murray will not leave early for the NFL, so he will be here at least two more years. If either Mason or LeMay can step up and show superiority to Murray, I would bet they would be named the starter, but Mason, didn’t show that much separation between Murray and himself, and Murray does have command of the offense when he is on the field. It is not always about who throws the ball the farthest or is fastest. Knowing the defense, preparing for the team ahead,, and other intangibles that Murray seems to excel at. He is a good field general and spends more time studying film about the upcoming opponent, than most anybody but the coaches.
If our running game develops as expected this year, Murray will be just fine. He made a few bad decisions last year, but every QB will do that once in a while. He sometimes tries to do too much, but with a more balanced attack, Murray will be just fine. Both LSU and Alabama didn’t have a QB, that would grade out as good as Murray, but they had the support around them, so that they could manage the game, and not have to worry about winning it all the time with their arm. Any QB. will only be as good as his supporting cast. Murray will have more experienced RB’s and receivers around him, so he doesn’t have to push so hard to complete plays. Considering the experience level we had last year, at RB and receivers, he did pretty good in my book. If Mason, truly was as superior to Murray as some claim he is on here, he would have gotten the starting nod over him.

It is what it is…Mason had zero interest from D1 colleges coming out of high school, yet UGA brought him in on scholarship…he’s worked with one of the best QB coaches in college ball and appears to be a quick study…is he better than Murray at this point? who really knows! the way the play calling goes at UGA is to build a lead and then sit on it and control the play calling of the other team by the our defensive coach forcing them to run plays that chew up the clock and what not…this works until you go up against a team that takes what they want and not what they’re given (LSU, Boise State, UF, Aub, UF…top tier coached teams)
Murray’s gone next year no matter what…so, RS Mason and he can hope to be better than LeMay, or just transfer and get with a team that needs a QB in a year…
running a pro-style offense after being in the HS spread all those years is tough to do…struggling with the various ball handling skills, turning their back to the line while dropping back and then finding the receivers and going thru the progression of where they are and who’s open and not…don’t forget about the weak blocking skills that seems to exist with most of the RB’s, and all the while counting 1 thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, and the ball better be gone
Now, not saying that Mason couldn’t do it, but at least give Murray some leeway when discussing Mason’s abilities against mop up duty, and Murray going against the other team’s best…so, I guess with some of your thoughts either Mason needs to start/transfer, or Lemay needs to transfer, because after next year UGA will be in the same boat…one thing about you DAWG you’re passionate, but fickle and never satisfied…Shockley over David Green, yea right! Shock was good to stick around and it payed off for him, will Mason do the same?

In the next couple of seasons I believe that CMR will not be able to keep signing QB’s like he has been able to do. Mason and LeMay both will be leaving I predict. Richt just refuses to give any meaningful game reps to anybody but the starter. Mason is probably better as a pure pocket passer than Murray is. This is not meant as any jab at Aaron, he is an excellent leader. But when you’re getting beat badly ( by LSU etc. ) why not put Mason in ? When you get up by 35 pts against Auburn…same thing. I have never understood CMR’s coaching ideas, and never will I guess.

I hope Bama and Saban stay on the schedule in 2012 so Richt can once more demonstrate to everyone why he won’t deserve the extension and probable pay raise he is going to get. Apparently beating ten nobodies means a lot at UGA. At least to McGarity. Mason should transfer so he can get a fair chance to compete for playing time at some other school…hopefully another SEC school where he, like Mettenberger, may get a chance to come back to Sanford Stadium and make Richt and Bobo look like fools.

Apparently, you have given up on the last game this season against # 12 AP Poll Michigan State with us # 18 AP Poll. As for if Christian LeMay steps up and shows Superiority to Aaron Murray that you think this Offensive Coaching Braintrust, will sit Aaron Murray – I have witnessed no such even tendencies on that front. As for Aaron Murray having Command of the Offense when he is on the field, it depends on whether you are referring to the 80 percent of his TD Passes being against teams who do not finish in the top 25, or whether you are referring to the 9 teams now he will have faced in his 3rd Year in this Offensive “System” who in fact end the seasons in the top 25 of which he has to-date LOST EVERY GAME.

Auburn 5-Loss Florida dictates what it wants on Offense ?
You repeat yourself on Florida and say again they have an awesome Offense that can do whatever it wants to do on Offense, not sit back and be given only losing options Todd Grantham offers up to them ?
Leads ? We had leads against Boise State, LSU, South Carolina and will dictate with our Defense what Michigan State can do offensively, while none of those 4 did, instead, dictate what we were left with to do against their defenses ?
1 of the Best QB coaches in college ? Who would that be you are referring to ? Mark Richt, who is CEO not Quarterbacks’ coach ? Mike Bobo who is Offensive Coordinator not Quarterbacks’ coach ? Would this refer to the same “Quarterbacks’ Coach at UGA 1 of the Best QB coaches in all of college football who put Matthew Stafford # 4 on the Depth Chart in 2006 behind the likes of Joe Cox and Joe Tereshinski III ? Would this refer to the same Quarterbacks’ Coach at Georgia who has taught Aaron Murray how to properly do his footwork stating now his 4th year here on our campus, having started practicing with the best college qb coach of all-time in the history of college football nationwide since December 2008 bowl game against Michigan State ? This best college football qb coach nationwide, who taught Aaron Murray how to get his timing down ? How to not stare down receivers ? How to not hold the football too long ? How, given all these fantastic receivers such as Chris Conley, Malcolm Mitchell and TE Orson Charles that he is fortunate to have done so well – losing to every team who finishes in the top 25 every single year ? How to manage the game and take advantage of the talent on the offense # 7 average talent every single year for 12 recruiting classes now and taught the QB how to be a Leader ? Taught him how to Throw the Football Away, instead of taking his 52 sacks in 26 games to-date ? Those are the only questions I have for you about your post for us to study this morning, sir ?

CRO I am with you on Aaron. If you would read what I said a little more slowly, I say play your backup QB as much as you possibly can. At some point your starter will be injured. No sense at all in having Murray in there during a blow out game. Absolutly none…

If Mason feels he’s been given a raw deal by Richt then he should transfer. If LeMay is the second coming of Cam Newton, then he better transfer before Richt moves him to tight end. I might be dumb, but what’s dumber? Paying full price of admission at the Ga.Dome for only one half of the game, twice, or giving Richt a long term extension for more mediocrity?

Mason is between a rock and a hard place. If he red-shirts, he will allow Lemay to become the #2, who will be hard to beat out in ‘13.
If he waits for Richt to intentionally allow the Dawgs to blow out a SEC team to get playing time, he will wait for ever. It’s not in Richt’s DNA to score more than he has to in order to win.
I love Murray, but he has yet, in 2 seasons, to lead UGA to a win over a favored opponent. Richt/Bobo are crazy to NOT put Mason in when Murray is throwing pics, and missing open receivers.

_______________________________________________
Right on, too, BullDogMike. You hit the nail on the head. Mark Richt in his 11 seasons to-date, has utterly refused to prepare his back-up Quarterback AT ALL. The only 1 time he did, it was because Coach Donald Shockley, local high school coach, made Mark Richt promise to HIM that he would play his son early in every single game – if HE allowed Mark Richt to Redshirt DJ in 2001. Other than that, NO BACK-UP ever brought in no matter WHAT THE SCORE blown-out or Winning by a large margin.
Boise State brought their back-up QB in in the 1st Quarter against us. In fact, he played every quarter. It did not seem to mess up the rhythm of Kellen Moore 1 iota.

Aaron Murray is not getting the job done around here. We play Favorites. Joe Cox, for example with his chronic throwing shoulder keeping out of practice every single week he was on our campus. He gets the flu before we play Okie State and has to fly out there on a private charter because of it. Does Mark Richt get a single QB in that game, for example, for as many as 1 play against this Okie State team who even with their win over us 10-24, still does not even end up in the top 25.

The UGA needs to remove the buyout from Richt’s contract and add a couple of years if that makes Mark feel better. Raise his pay if that helps get the buyout removed. If you give him more years with a buyout then the AD is stupid and the UGA fans will pay the price. The DC is supplying the discipline at this point and if he goes UGA is done…again. Just look at how Crowell has conducted himself this year!! You folks can’t be this stupid not to see Crowell has no respect for Richt or UGA. If it comes from Columbus then you need to avoid.

If it hurts a kids confidence to have someone looking over his shoulder then he’s not the man ya need. Competition helps a winner. Competition hurts Murry??? What does that say. (ALL) that needs to be said. Murry can’t hit the wide open reciever??? Can He??? Mason doesn’t miss. HuH!!!

To all who proclaim Mason has looked DYN-O-MITE, I agree that he has…against the SCRUB DEFENSES. The only reason UGA recruited him in the first place was because they were thin on QB’s. Why do you think no other major schools went after the kid….it’s because he’s just not that good. Mason is so typical of “everybody’s an MVP” type kid our society tries to dictate to us. He doesn’t get his way so he’ll “transfer”. Yes, Aaron Murray started here on our campus December 2008 practicing for the Michigan State bowl game. 2009 he was redshirted. 2010, he as our Leader led us to a season which we have to go back 58 years to 1953 to find an UGA team who lost more games, losing to all teams who finished in the top 25 at 0-5 and 2 more losses to teams who did not finish top 25 and fired their coaches even after he lost to them. 2011, he lost to every team who finished top 25 again, and has for his career now gone 0-8. He has run up his stats throwing 45 TD Passes vs teams who did not finish top 25 and only 12 TD passes in the 8 games vs teams who did end up top 25. He has specifically been at his VERY WORST in the key games against the teams who in fact ended the seasons in the top 25. He has 20 fumbles and 20 interceptions with a 1-yard a carry average for his 7 carries a game his entire career. 2012, he ain’t getting no NFL Draft Selection declared or not declared, as a Redshirt Junior. 2013, he will still be here being the only QB played as BullDogMike points out. He will AGAIN go undrafted in the NFL Draft, and will NEVER PLAY A DOWN IN THE NFL – his stated goal. His Sophomore Slump this 2011 season, was preceded by a better season last season than this season to-date. He has gone backwards.
Christian LeMay is Redshirted this season having enrolled early this time last year practicing with the team for the Liberty Bowl against Southern Florida of Conference USA, with Aaron Murray STINKING UP THAT GAME TO HIGH-HEAVEN TOO 6-10, despite the play of the special teams and despite the play of our Defense. Christian LeMay will be a Redshirt Freshman next season, who will not get into a single game and play any minutes. That is 2012. So, yes when Aaron Murray goes as an UNDRAFTED free-agent after the 2013 season finally GONE – Good Riddance – Christian LeMay will be a Redshirt Sophomore, who will not have played any that season either. Unprepared for a QB change AGAIN this braintrust on Offense will have no QB ready for the 2014 season which will be the Redshirt Junior year for Christian LeMay and the 1st season we can hope to have a QB will EVEN SHOW-UP for the big-games against the teams who end up that season in the top 25 either.

“The most important thing to me is I want to play, whether that’s here or somewhere else. I don’t know where that’s at,” said Mason, who was also initially offered by Iowa and later Virginia and Mississippi State. “I know I can play here, I’ve seen the improvements I’ve made and I probably go against the No. 2, 3 or 4 defense in the country every day and to see yourself succeed and make strides every single day, it gives you confidence that you can play at this level and you can play anywhere.”

If this young man didn’t believe that he’s better qb than Aaron Murray he wouldn’t be contemplating leaving uga. If Zach Mettenberger didn’t believe that he’s a better qb than Aaron Murray he wouldn’t have gotten upset when Mr.Richt announced that Murray will be his starter. Everybody knows Mettenberger looked better than Murray in that G-DAY game.
I was Aaron Murray’s biggest supporter but the young man is too inconsistent and he doesn’t make smart decisions against good teams. Why isn’t Mr.Richt aware of this?

Richt’s inconsistant philosophy of running backs must block before they play and the one starter at QB regardless will never allow UGA to ever have a good transistion from Senior QB who started four years without much back up experience…Then you have non tested One year wonders then Freshmen or Redshirt freshmen with talent on the bench with no experience. UGA has really been fortunate over the years that David Greene, Stafford, and Murray never actually got hurt and missed games. Now if Mason leaves that leaves non scholorshipped or a redshirt freshman to come in….Always been disaster in the making…it just has not happened yet… But the running backs and Receivers rotate. I think the rotation of Shockley what little it was was always poor timing when used. He never was hot when he entered the game. Now no one is ever hot when they enter the game. Has Murray not improved due to the lack of perceived competition. Just seems not a good idea not to let the back up play more.. But we have not been in many blow out games in the SEC to allow backups to play. LSU had to use a backup due to discipline problems….We have not had that in the QB position since Carter and Donnan did not use anyone else regardless. Go Dawgs

That is BS.
Florida State offered Hutson Mason a Scholarship to play Quarterback at FSU. Indiana, Mississippi State, Virginia, and many others offered Hutson Mason a Scholarship. A good kid, with a 3.0 GPA Deans List and Honor Rolls at UGA, Hutson Mason has DONE EVERYTHING ASKED OF HIM. He has NOT tweeted prior to the Boise State game what he was going to do in the Georgia Dome, as did Aaron Murray. He has not nor will he DECLARE for the NFL Draft to see what the NCAA College Football Advisory Committee has to say about him. He’s NOT THAT IMMATURE. Huston Mason is a BETTER LEADER than Aaron Murray. Hutson Mason doesn’t hold on to the football too long, nor throw his passes so poorly as Aaron Murray consistently does. He DOES SHOW-UP for the big-games against the teams who do finish in the top 25. He was NOT YANKED in the last game, as was Aaron Murray. He is bigger than Aaron Murray. There is no way he would have played against South Carolina last year or this year as did Aaron Murray. There is no way he played as poorly against LSU as did Aaron Murray. There is no way he would have played as miserably against Mississippi State last year as Aaron Murray. There is no way he would have played as poorly as Aaron Murray did against Florida last year. There is no way Hutson Mason would have played as badly as Aaron Murray vs Boise State this season, either. There is no way he would play as poorly as Aaron Murray will play in the next game vs Michigan State. There is no way Hutson Mason would have played as poorly as Aaron Murray did against Colorado either.

If Hutson Mason was ever given a chance to play in a real game, I belive he would be easily outshine CMR’s boy Murray. Murray’s the starter because CMR likes the fact that he does all this film study and tries to act like a leader. Just because you look at alot of film, doesn’t mean it is going to make you something special on the field. QB is the one position on the entire team where I believe there is no open competion each week. I also believe that reguardless of what Murray does in a game (2-3 interceptions or 2-3 fumbles) he’ll remain in the game. We could of easily won the USC game if Murray doesn’t throw a pick 6 or fumble near the goal line for another easy TD (we only lost by 3). That game cost us a BCS bowl game and a top 10 ranking. Mason is taller than Murray and can see down field better plus his release is a lot quicker than Murray’s. Just like Mettenbeger, if Mason transfers to another school,he’ll lead his team to a championship just like Mett will do for LSU. The sad thing for me being a UGA fan is Murray is going to be here 2 more years, because no way he’ll be a NFL QB and leave early.

What is happening at Georgia? RIcht can’t win any big games. Loses big to LSU in the SEC championship game. All his players want to turn pro early because he can’t win the big game and they want to run before their careers are ruined. Now…..the best QB on the team wants to transfer because the coach can’t see who the best QB is. All the second string players now want to transfer. Georgia’s long run at winning championships is obviously over. No hope for Georgia now. What will Georgia do when Mason is gone. Lose. Lose. Lose. Lose….and all the recruits will leave now. No hope for Georgia. No hope for Georgia fans. Might as well go jump off the bandwagon train now…and before summer gets here.

Wow, I wonder if Murray’s lack of improvement and Hudson’s lack of playing has anything to do with the coaching ability of Bobo and Richt. Defense improves, Why not QB’s or the Offense? At least Richt is not sticking with him as he has with Murray. As far as NFL potential goes, Mason looks the better part than Murray. His release and accuracy look to be superior to Murray, even in his limited playing time.

Personal attacks,
I believe they had an open contest in spring and fall training camps this year for starting QB, and Murray cam out on top. Being a QB has more to do than just throwing passes. You have to be able to control the team, be the leader and be able to take a hit as well. Murray has shown the ability to do those things. Tell me in all honesty that you think Mason, or LeMay would have been the difference in winning or losing the 3 games we lost this year. Football is a team sport, and Murray is one of the best team players UGA has on that field. I would bet you would find out, if you talked to the players on that team, how much Murray means to that team. Like I said, it is a team sport. One guy seldom loses or wins the game for a team, and Murray is no different in that respect.
You say he hasn’t won against any top 25 teams. Nobody presently on this team for the last two years has either. His own team mates voted him the offensive MVP of the team at the recent team awards banquet. That should tell you something I think.
Next year, looks like a good year, because with the RB’s we have, we will have a more balanced attack. Murray probably will not have to throw 33 touch down passes, no matter against what team, in order for UGA to win. When he does have to throw or the play is designed as a pass, he will have receivers that now, with the exception of a senior King, have a season under their belts.Hopefully, the OL will give him some time to throw this year. Pass protection was not as near good, as the rush blocking was. He deserves to start, since he has been in the battle for the last two years, when UGA has been struggling at both the offense and defense. UGA has a fairly easy schedule next year again, due to a lot of rebuilding of divisional teams, but I don’t think there will be as many close wins as this year. S.C. might be tough, because they are pretty good at defense, but I think UGA’s defense is better against their offense than the other way around so I think UGA gets the win.

Looks like Richt’s setting it up where Mason transfers or redshirts, then Lemay can start rotating in certain series throughout the game, like DJ used to do, and of course if Lemay does a lot better than Murray in those opportunities, it won’t matter until Murray graduates. So it’s risky for Lemay or Mason to stay, because neither will ever start a game until Murray graduates, because no NFL team will want Murray so he won’t be leaving early.

If you look back at what Richt’s done at UGA, only 1 year did he play 2 QB’s, and DJ got pretty limited reps that year. If Lemay or Mason want to start a game, or even get a lot of reps this upcoming season, they’ll have to rransfer, Richt’s not going to suddenly change his habits on QB. Richt didn’t even bench Joe Cox after Cox threw 11 interceptions in the first few games. Didn’t bench Murray after several 3 or 4 turnover games (SC/UF/UCF 2010 & LSU 2011 Murray should have bench after 2nd turnover in 3rd quarter).
Murray got worse this year in yards, accuracy, passer rating, and is still winless against a team that finished in the top 25 (0-7 record now). Yet Mason or Lemay didn’t get a start or significant reps. The schedule was easy this year, only played 3 teams that ended up in top 25, and went 0-3 there, and went 10-0 against the bad teams. Just like last year with Murray at QB.

Mason could start at LSU tomorrow. Play him more. He is a mistake-free winner like David Greene. He should be allowed to compete with Murray regularly in live game action. What were Staffords rushing stats, who cares , the Qb in this offense is there to pass the ball, and hand off to the tailback. very few designed running plays for the qb, this offense doesn’t want the qb to run. He would have had a better senior season had Richt played him more when games were in hand or when Stafford struggled—even if just for a series or two for Matt to get his head straight. One reason UGA QBs make mistakes in big games is that they know they are not coming out no matter what

i hope the response he gets back from the nfl scouts goes public. would be very eye-opening to the UGA coaching staff and hopefully push them to truly open up the qb competition this fall for either mason or maybe even lemay to to take over.

my intention is not to attack murray’s character off the field.
my sole issue w/ him is his lack of leadership w/ this team. i’ll admit, i was very excited of the prospects to come w/ murray after reading what he did in returning to his hs team. however, i just don’t see any leadership out of him either on the field or on the sidelines.
i’ve read where he’s a film room junkie. aside from the auburn game this past year (deep passes thrown short), i’ve seen no real translation of that extra time paying-off on the field. and to take that game a step further…..my bet is it was the uga coaching staff that passed along that game strategy…not murray.
i just don’t see him progressing any further than where he his now. i believe he’s peaked.
be it against 2nd and 3rd stringers of lsu in the sec champ game…..i saw an extra zip from mason’s balls that i’ve never seen from murray. i obviously don’t know if he’s better….but i believe there’s potential there.

@kb not true. That would be 1 year and up to Richt as to how he wished him to be released.
Several people have asked about how transfer rules work in football, particularly when the transfer is from one SEC school to another. Because I was somewhat confused myself, I called the SEC office to get a clarification,. Here it is:
A player who is granted a release must sit out a year at his new school but can go on scholarship immediately.
A player who is not granted a release can’t receive athletics-related financial aid during the year he sits out at his new school but is eligible to play and receive financial aid the following year.
If a player is a walk-on or plans to be a walk-on at his new school, the same rules apply.
There was no mention of any situation in which a player must sit for two years.

Think rule reads that nif he transfers to a D-1 program he either loses a year of eligibility or redshirts and has one year to play. Would seem best option redshirt here abd compete with LeMay in 2014. Murray is not going anywhere for next 2 years and there will be competition coming in next year and the year after that. That’s big time college football, competition. Aaron has been really resilient, but you never know when an injury could occur and if you transfer and or some two-bit school and miss opportunity to play for the team you wanted to play for.
And for the people saying coaches playing favorites for AM to play do not have a clue about what;s going on. The coaches are playing whoever gives them the best chance to win

One of the Dawgs’ biggest weaknesses under Coach Richt is that we always seem to play DOWN to the level of our opponent. Every season…even when the team is strong…we have two or three games where a team we should roll over ends up playing us very tight. (Just look at this past season…Florida has their worst team in several years, and we have to scramble to beat them by 4. And we need a last-second tackle by our punter to save a game against Vanderbilt.)
So we almost never have a chance to send our second string offense into the game, and let them carry the load the entire fourth quarter. We needed to do that with D.J. Shockley a few times, and with Tereshinski, and with Joe Cox, and we need to now with Mason.

Games like Auburn this year, Tennessee last year and other games where AM was struggling are excellent examples of why he should scrutinized the current decision makers. He can play in any program and excell because he has always been a gamer. Just shows what hard work will do for you and coaches will tell you anything to get their way. Auburn sure messed up when they could of had him 2 years ago. Think what he could have done for them this year with QB play. I’m sure he will reach the right choice. Murray really has the coaches fooled. Here’s his plan for making sure Mason never gets in.
1- try to keep game close against top or mid level opponents, knowing Richt won’t put Mason in until there’s a 25+ lead.
2. If it’s a bottom level opponent, and you know Bobo has told you Mason will play in the 3rd quarter, try to pass for 3 or 4 td’s in the first half and throw no interceptions with the first string offense. this way, Mason will have a hard time matching up in the 2nd half, with the 2nd string offense.

Murray threw 5 td’s the 2 quater of New Mexico State game. Why did Murray play so well?
1. A bad defense.
2. He knew there would be competition, Mason was pre-planned to play the 2nd half, so Murray went to the passing game, abandoned the run game, and threw 5 td’s.
How did Bobo get the best performance of the year out of Murray in that game?
COMPETITION.
That’s why there SHOULD be a competition every game, but there’s not. Murray wouldn’t be throwing 3 interceptions in a game if he knew he’d lose his spot. And if he did, Mason wouldn’t be transferring, because he’d know it’s all about farness and getting his opportunity when Murray falters.
But when Richt keeps starting Murray, regardless of how Murray performs, then QB’s like Mettenberger, Gray, Mason/Lemay all transfer.
Why? Because Richt’s isn’t fair, and keeps playing Murray even when Murray doesn’t earn it (LSU?).

There is just so much talent in this state and the fact that the kids and parent’s love CMR is why UGA recruits so well. Now when will UGA bring home the crystal ball is the million dollar question.

Johnson knows what to do with real talent on offense see UGA vs. Ga Tech 2008. Now he needs a lot of help on defense but hey Richt did too. I think if you switched the UGA and Tech players, CPJ would be 11-2 or 12-1 (Boise State is a toss up and a loss to LSU) and Richt would be 6-6 under the same circumstances as CPJ was this year with losses to North Carolina, Virginia, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Georgia.

I said given the circumstances Dawg48. I am aware of the triple option at Georgia Tech versus the pro style at UGA. My point is if Georgia Tech could recruit at the level of UGA with CPJ as coach I think they would win more games than Richt would with the same players. Imagine a Cam Newton or Tim Tebow running the triple option with the ability to hand it off to Knowshon Moreno and the downfield threat of Aj Green ala Stephen Hill and “Bebe” Thomas. That would be unstoppable. I am a dawg fan though, its just my opinion.

My point is that CPJ gets more out of his players than Georgia’s offensive staff. Check the talent level of Tech and tell me you saw them winning 8 or 9 games. You look at UGA’s roster and see future NFL starters at various positions yet no national championship since 1980. The state of Georgia is one of the top states for high school talent. If Ga Tech can win 9 games with 3 star players UGA should be able to at least win an SEC championship with 4 and 5 star players.

Thank you and just a fan it is clear you have a lot of bad feelings toward Tech and that is ok I do not hate Tech. The point is even though most recruits are turned off by the triple option offense which limits Georgia Tech’s recruiting, CPJ and staff can still find less heralded players and win 8-9 games a year which is good for Tech. 8-9 wins at UGA is to be considered mediocre with the available resources.

There’s been plenty of opportunities to get this guy some playing time. However, the philosophy of the coaches doesn’t allow for such a thing. Their penchant to get locked into concrete on a number of football issues can be shown by their sitting on leads instead of seeing those situations as a chance to build depth against a live opponent. Mason has a stronger arm and is noticeably more accurate on long passes. Many other coaches not locked into the hyper-loyalty deal (maybe it’s a Christian rule) would play their best guy.

He was a overated QB from Lassiter HS in East Cobb Co. who threw from the shotgun every play against crappy teams in Lassiter’s region…hence his lofty numbers. ALl the recruiting agencies REALLY questioned his ability for the college level. If it were not for UGA having a last second, unplanned, unused schlorship pop up, he would have been riding pine at Clemson. Actually, The BCS NC game is ranked # 1 Bowl Game by Fox Sports. The Peach Bowl is ranked # 23, as the Peach Bowl always pits The SEC # 6 team UNRANKED AUBURN without Michael Dyer their only RB all season long Michael Dyer amid losing both OC and DC and now their only RB. Maybe Gus Malzahn took a lesser job at Arkansas State because he plump wife says what should never be said in a copyright Church TV show “Dyer has an attitude; Cam is cute; 20 year old kids are not very smart at Auburn” just stupid silly stuff from wife of a coach – not like Barbara Dooley, who obviously learned football and what to say from Vince. But, Fox Sports Ranking of Bowl Games is based up
WHO PLAYS IN BOWL GAME FOX SPORTS RANK of bowl
There are some compelling bowl games to watch this year. This is not because the BCS got it right this season. This is because the BCS took the top 2 SEC AGAIN. This left open Great Bowl Games. Not a BCS coup because it GOT IT RIGHT. I saw criticism on this blog about the bowl games. I haven’t commenting on those yet, but I noted them. Oklahoma State Stanford is a game I will watch, and this is the Fiesta Bowl – typically a game I care very little about. I will watch this 1 because (1) Andrew Luck and (2) Okie State was supported by the clique on this blog for some odd reason as the team INSTEAD OF ALABAMA who gets no DO OVER they say but Okie State gets a DO OVER having LOST to 6-6 IOWA STATE. Normally, too, the BCS gives the Rose Bowl a CRUDOLA GAME; but again this season they get Wisconsin against Oregon. I will watch that game too when again, I hardly give any notice to any Rose Bowl game – they have been notoriously hideous teams in the past. Cotton Bowl is Kansas State vs Arkansas. Like the # 12 Michigan State vs # 18 UGA Bulldogs, the Cotton Bowl is just like the Outback Bowl ONLY BETTER because both Arkansas and Kansas State are BETTER than the Outback Bowl Opponents. South Carolina Nebraska CapitalOne Bowl pays $ 9.2 million and is the game we wanted, but did not deserve over South Carolina.

TAMPA WHO WANTS TO GO TO TAMPA NOT ORLANDO? So, we earned $2.2 million less and don’t go to Favorite Tourist Spot Orlando, but instead to Tampa. I mean who in their right mind would live in Tampa ? Or chose Tampa over Orlando ? Great Scott. Tampa has Clearwater; I’ll give it that and St Petersburg and good restaurants – but Tampa proper is the pits compared to great Orlando. Even Virginia Tech Michigan in the Sugar Bowl is BETTER THAN THE CRUDOLA TEAMS THE BCS HANDS TO THE SUGAR BOWL EVERY YEAR for our SEC teams to play. I mean really some of the dumpy NOBODY teams the BCS assigns to the Sugar Bowl for SEC to play have been HORRID. This is what the Fox Sports Bowl rankings is. Jeez, and you guys sit in here all day this afternoon talking about and NONE OF YOU READ IT. I did. I like this year’s bowl games for a change.
12 TD PASSES VS 8 TEAMS ENDED UP TOP 25 AARON MURRAY
Or, did you want to try to point out the ??????????????????????????????
45 TD PASSES VS TEAMS NOT ENDING TOP 25 AARON MURRAY
?
With his 55 % completions all games 20 fumbles and 20 interceptions in 26 games,
DEER IN HEADLIGHTS vs 8 teams so far ended top 25.
Outback Bowl at 1 pm on 2 more Mondays after tomorrow is not the # 5 Best Bowl. It is ranked the # 5 Best GAME to watch of the bowl games. This is because we play the Big 10 (12) as a supposed top SEC team prior to the BCS NC Game between ONLY SEC Teams. We are supposed to validate The SEC sending BOTH of our best teams to play each other AGAIN, instead of Big XII, Big 10, PAC-12 teams. I see no way personally that Aaron Murray all of a sudden in a game vs a team who obviously finishes in the top 25 that Aaron Murray will not AGAIN as he has in 8 previous 9 now such games, play like a deer in headlights.

_________________________________________________________________
Lowcountry Bulldawg rest his case on that, and left this blog and posted nothing else at all after this. Excuse me Lowcountry Bulldawg, it is not a JOKE. It is TRUE what A person SMART enough to know…… said. It is not just semantics – semantics is a Greek word whose definition is the study of the MEANING behind what is said. It is, in fact, THE STUDY OF THE MEANING OF THE WORDS. Remind me again, you didn’t go to college, right ? You told us you either didn’t go to college or didn’t go to UGA, right ? Is that what you told us ? The fact is that A person SMART enough to know…… is absolutely 100 percent correct that it is the COACHING and what we have a result WITH AARON MURRAY as our ONLY QB TO EVER GET TO PLAY THE LAST ENTIRE 2 YEARS OF NOTHINGNESS, yet Mark Richt recruited THE DREAM TEAM. Everything is EVERYBODY’S FAULT except for Mark Richt with you. EVERYTHING AARON MURRAY DOES is EVERYBODY’S FAULT except for Aaron Murray himself. And, by the way Lowcountry Bulldawg, an example of leadership by Aaron Murray is NOT THAT HE IS A BALL HOG, but that when IC for example talks trash to nobody opponents that he steps up and speaks to him about it to stop it as the LEADER. That he gets in the huddle great opponent being played and TAKES CHARGE. I played db; and I am sorry – but saying he is A BALL HOG – is NOT LEADERSHIP, nor an EXAMPLE OF LEADERSHIP. LEADERSHIP is when a WR drops a pass, NOT STANDING THERE WAVING YOUR ARMS AT HIM SHAKING YOUR HEAD, but quietly going back to the Huddle and there looking at the guy and SAME PLAY. You didn’t play the game of football, obviously – either that or you are JUST SITTING THERE MAKING EXCUSES to see what sticks. This 1 doesn’t. (NEITHER DOES HEISMAN TROPHY AARON MURRAY.) We haven’t been playing well against the top teams all 11 years, yet only 1 other football program has recruited better TALENT than Mark Richt these 11 years, sir.
1 OTHER PROGRAM BETTER TALENT 11 YEARS
The facts are :
MARK RICHT 11-YEAR ERA :
3-10 vs teams finishing top 10
17-27 vs teams finishing top 25
17 losses teams wouldn’t end top 25 w/o win over him

i have always thought that Malcome & Mason were better players than Crowell & Murray, but that’s just me, and i would really hate to see Mason leave now that Malcome is at least getting a little notice.

A person smart enough to know. This is what you wrote.
“I am pretty sure John Denver and Horse Face Elway run Denver. LOL ”
I think John Denver has been dead now for 3 or 4 years.
What is it you are suppose to be smart enough to know anyway?

I’ve told friends & family all season that Mason may be a better QB than Murray. Murray is a good QB, but has plenty of faults, such as not throwing a good long ball, acuracy & not being able to throw over linemen because of his 5′10′ stature. I have often asked myself the question of why don’t they (UGA coaches) redshirt Mason — if he would be willing to do that. Sounds like he would, so I would do it most definetly.

I would redshirt Mason to give him a chance to compete for the starting job with Lemay once Murray leaves.
Murray is not 5′10″. I am 6′4″ and stood right next to him and he is every bit 6′0″ or 6′1″. His arms are not long and that makes it appear he is short.
The comment about not throwing a good long ball? WRONG. He needs a consistent receiver to catch it. Malcolm Mitchell did it all year until he got hurt. T King was not as good at it.

don’t worry. in two years we won’t have any quarterback except for Joe Tereshinski IX, and Richt will spend 3 years rebuilding AGAIN..

I bemoaned the fact that Mason wasn’t getting any meaningful snaps all year. Bobo praised him with “uncanny” abilities all summer and fall. There should have been designed plays for him all year. To say Bobo/Richt have a history of not playing the backup QB is partially true. They had designed plays for L Gray and used him in most games. Or, I should say, one designed play for Gray…he would run with the ball.
As much as I like to say that Richt/Bobo are way football-smarter than I, and that I defer to their judgement on most things; I cannot fathom why a QB with Mason’s stated uncanny abilities hasn’t gotten more playing time. If the backup is that great, as propounded by his coach, there should be at least a couple plays for him in every game, if not a whole series; especially when Murray and the offense appear to be struggling or stalling.
Since it has become obvious they’re not going to play him, a red shirt is probably appropriate. However, I thought he had played enough (mop-up) where they couldn’t do that. I’m just glad he loves UGA and wants to stay. He seems to have a great team-first attitude.

You have to wonder why he didn’t consider the lack of playing time when he signed?
He knew Murray was going to be the starter unless he fell on his face. Not much chance of that happening. Probably should have went to somewhere else where the situation wasn’t so obvious.
I think the kid is really good. However, we will never know.

Biggest complaint on Murray is he throws the deep ball like a 12 year old girl. I hope Mason can stay, I am not in the Lemay camp.

PLEASE TRANSFER HUTSON PLEASE! The kid doesn’t get his way, as in more playing time, some he threatens to trasfer??? That’s another opening for a true team player and besides, LeMay is a much better all around athelete than Huston will ever be. I see Mason’s family is heavy on the postings today.

Sounds like Coach Bobo was just saying as many nice of things about Mason as he could, if he did want to transfer. As has always been the case this staff has been supportive and helped any of it’s players find the right place if they ever feel their career would be better off transferring

Absolutely no way Hutson Mason stays. Why should he? He doesn’t get significant reps against big competition. Even against teams like Coastal Carolina, he doesn’t get any time with the first string. Even when Murray turns the ball over three or four times in once game, Richt won’t sit Murray. It’s a joke, it’s unfair, Richt plays favorties. Mason needs to send Richt a message.

Murray has never won a game in two years against a good team, like a team that finishes in the top 29 rankings.

Hopefully, Mason & Lemay can be tricked into sitting on the bench for 2 more years, in case Murray gets hurt. Geez, we all know Murray starting every game unless he gets hurt, but we need some decent back up QB’s unless Murray gets hurt.

Well We have 11 more days for the game…and all injured players should be healthy by then and ready to play, Mason should transfer because he wont have a chance for playing time not when Christian Lemay is getting better and move up to No 2 Qb position.

We should not have 2 Qbs one the same grade level. MR has always been weak at recruiting the needs. MR runs out of rbs and recruits 4 in one year. MR runs out of qbs and recruits 2 or 4 in the same season. He needs to take a note from ALs head coach on how to put a team together

Let’s see hmm.. CMR is considering redshirting the 3 star recruit with 2 years exp as backup and letting Christian Lemay the redshirting 5 star recruit take over backup duties. This can only mean 3 star Hudson is behind 5 star Lemay which means Hudson is probably gone. Also Shockley’s situation is totally different Hudson so don’t compare your situation to his. DJ didn’t have a 5 star QB behind him.
